SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Did You Know?

Tips to handle teen dating Most teenagers are eager to date, but parents may be less eager to reach

that milestone. Preparing yourself — and your teenager — for smart, safe dating is key. As a family, set rules, and enforce them. Discuss who they can see, what activities are allowed or forbid-den, how late they can stay out. Make sure your teenager is clear on how to handle himself or herself in tough situations, and that they have an “out” if they need one in you or another trusted adult. Honesty and speci city will make these conversations more impactful, and more likely to stick with your teen. For more tips on handling teen dating, read the VIRTUS article “Preparing for the Day Your Teen Starts Dating” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.

LENTEN PRACTICES THAT WILL HELP YOU GROW IN HOLINESS

FREQUENT CONFESSION

Frequent Confession is generally said to be once a month but in the Introduction to the Devout Life St. Fran-cis de Sales recommends once a week and St. Aplhonsus Ligouri says that anyone who is serious about sav-

ing his soul will go often, “at least once a week.” Some saints went every day; many went several times a week. Examination of Conscience Review the day and what you did and did not do that might have dis-

pleased God; then, keep these things in mind for your next Confession.

PERFORM GOOD WORKS

Visit the sick; visit the people in nurs-ing homes; counsel, picket or pray at

abortion clinics; take someone to Mass with you on Sundays; encour-age some one with a marriage prob-

lem to see a priest.

GIVE ALMS

Increase your donation to the church; give to cloistered monasteries and

convents in your area; support good Catholic schools; support crisis preg-

nancy centers; support local soup kitchens; help those who are poor.

STUDY YOUR CATHOLIC FAITH

Take advantage of what your Parish offers to help you grow in the

knowledge Night Bible Study; Wednesday Night Class on Vatican II: Wednesday Night Survey of the Bible

(Spanish), etc.

CONSECRATE YOUR LIFE TO GOD

Make your morning offering each day, consecrating your

prayers, works, joys and sorrows, to God through the Immaculate

Heart of Mary.

DO APOSTOLIC WORK

Take someone to Mass with you; take someone to Confession with you;

invite someone to become a Catholic and start talking to him or her about it;

distribute good Catholic literature.

DO SPIRITUAL READING

Require yourself to do at least 15 minutes of reading from a good

Catholic book each day; read your Bible at least 15 minutes each day

(they are the heroes and heroines we should imitate).

ABSTINENCE We can abstain from (give up) meat on days other than those required, give up candy, sweets, desserts, soda, gum, coffee, tea, smoking, beer, wine, hard liquor, eating between meals, and/or our favorite foods and drinks, etc. FASTING This is required by the Church of all of those ages 21 through 59 on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, but it is something which most people can do every day during Lent (except Sunday, which was never a day of fasting). The Catholic Church’s traditional method of fasting is to take only one full meal per day, at which meat may be eaten, with nothing eaten between meals. This is a mild form of fasting, but one which leaves the person always a little on the hungry side and ever cognizant that he is de-priving himself of his regular fare. Television (and Radio, too!) We can drastically limit our T.V. viewing, give up fa-vorite programs or eliminate it altogether.

PRAYER -An extra Mass or more each week. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is greatest prayer there is. -The daily Rosary. Our Lady urgently requested the daily recitation of the Rosary (5 decades) during each of her appearances at Fatima. -A Holy Hour, once a week, twice a week, or each day. This is one of the most underrated devotions in the Church. Our Lord Himself has said. “Could you not watch one hour with me?” (Mt. 26:40) -Pray for those in Purgatory. We have an obligation to pray for our relatives and for anyone we may have harmed by our sins. -Pray for those who are in danger of dying without being in the state of Sanctifying Grace. -Pray for an end to abortion. -Pray for peace in the world. Prayer can work miracles and change the hearts of even wicked rulers. decades) during each of her appearances at Fatima.
