COVID-19: We Will Get Through This Together!

Los habitantes de Detroit son conocidos como personas resistentes y en ninguna parte es eso más cierto que en el suroeste de Detroit, donde florece la actividad y espirito empresarial.

La pandemia de coronavirus ha estado con nosotros durante casi la mitad del año 2020 y ninguno de nosotros sabe realmente cuándo volveremos a “nuestras actividades como de costumbre”. COVID-19: ¡Lo superaremos juntos!

Detroiters are known as a resilient peo-ple and nowhere is that more true than in Southwest Detroit where the can-do spirit of entrepreneurism flourishes.

The Coronavirus pandemic has been with us for nearly half of the year 2020 and none of us really know when we will return to “business as usual.” In fact, smart business managers have been adapting to the changing circum-stances since the day “dine in restaurant ser-vices” were suspended by Governor Whitmer’s Executive Order on March 16th. The business-es that survive will continue to anticipate and respond to our “new normal” as they struggle to remain open (or reopen) to offer their prod-ucts, trades or services to a cautious public.

The SDBA has pivoted to respond to the crisis in many ways from the beginning of the pandemic. Our employees and partners have

been working remotely since mid-March when the Governor issued the first of nearly 150 Executive Orders. We immediately refocused our efforts on communications with our busi-ness members and entrepreneurs by issuing daily COVID-19 e-bulletins with valuable information and resources for our local busi-nesses. Our e-blasts shared information on

grants and loans for small businesses from the federal Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) to local grants that were quickly made available by TechTown, the Detroit Economic Growth Corp., the City of Detroit and Wayne County governments and the Michigan Economic Development Corp.

In March, the SDBA initiated a call to our peer technical assistance providers to form a Coronavirus Crisis Team to meet weekly to share information and coordinate services. We have offered more than 20 webinars for busi-nesses on grants and loans, unemployment benefits, opportunities for contractor network-ing with prime contractors, a business finance boot camp series and safety precautions for re-opening your business in collaboration with MIOSHA.

La Joya Gardens UpdateIt’s often said that the most difficult part of build-

ing a large community development project is pull-ing together all the necessary financing to ensure that the project is fea-sible to start and complete construction and oper-ate success-fully -- and SDBA’s La Joya Gardens project is no exception.

SDBA is undertak-ing this development with its partners at Cinnaire, a Detroit-based, non-profit developer, and Invest Detroit, a Detroit-based, Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI).

Fortunately, our development team received good news that the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MHSDA) approved more than $8 mil-

lion in Low Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) which supports the affordable hous-ing portions of the project. This is the largest single piece of the multi-lay-ered financing that is necessary for the development to move forward.

La Joya Gardens is a 53-unit mixed-income and mixed-use develop-ment. Forty of the 53 units will be affordable, charg-ing 40-80% of the Average Median Income (AMI).

The Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) Façade Matching Grant & Design Assistance Program has completed seven southwest Detroit improve-ment projects valued at more than $145,000 and include new signage,

awnings, facades, masonry, and art-work. The SDBA’s Façade Matching Grant Program offers matching grants to property owners to make changes that have significant visual impact and correct code violations to their 80+ year old storefronts.

“We started this program 25 years ago to make a dramatic visual difference within the West Vernor & Springwells Business Improvement District in order to support an attractive, safe, vibrant shopping district in Southwest Detroit,” said Myrna Segura, SDBA, Director of Business District Development. “With the help of partners such as JPMorgan Chase, we have been able to assist so many small and family-owned businesses to turn their dreams into reality while giving residents a neighborhood they can truly be proud to support.”

In addition, design assistance matching grants for new and expanding businesses were provided to Lotus Essences & El Artesano

Juice Bar (4746-4748 W. Vernor Hwy., 48209), and to Mangonadas del Barrio (2010 Lawndale Street, 48209). Business owners received technical assistance that provided conceptual renderings of interior floor plan and interior design con-cepts. “We believe these restoration projects will contribute significantly to returning economic prosperity to Southwest Detroit, said September Hargrove, Vice President, Global Philanthropy at JPMorgan Chase. “Individually and side-by-side, each visual improvement to the commu-nity brings momentum to attracting and growing more businesses, creat-ing new jobs and supporting a thriv-ing local economy.”

Thirteen units will be market-rate. There will be 47 one-bedroom units and 6 two-bedroom units. An agreement between MHSDA and the devel-opers will maintain the lease pricing of the afford-able units at these levels of affordability for the next 45 years.

La Joya (which means “the jewel” in Spanish) Gardens will be built on

4000 – 4060 W. Vernor Hwy., 48209, the vacant parcel between Palms and Hubbard one block east of Clark Park. La Joya will have approximately 6,000 square feet of commercial space and 1,800 square feet of Community/Retail Flex space on the ground floor of the building.

Groundbreaking and the start of construction is targeted for late 2020, but will be contingent upon

closing of all the financing sources.

The development team is targeting Southwest Detroit-based businesses and entrepreneurs as tenants for the com-mercial spaces on the ground floor. do not visit your establishment? Are you open during the right hours when your customers tend to do their shopping? Have you streamlined your operations and right-sized your staff and supplies to match your cur-rent revenues?

➢ Are you willing to innovate? Have you gone DIGITAL? Is your business online with an up to date website? Can your customers place an order online so you can deliver the product to their door or allow them to pick up their order from your location?

Immigrant families need to know the process that occurs after being arrested by ICE or CBP. You will be processed and sent to one of Michigan’s three jails. A phone call is allowed and you are advised to call a family member or close friend and provide that person with your foreign registration number (the number starts with the letter A) and jail to which you will be sent. This person should contact an Attorney to visit you in jail and determine if you are eli-gible to apply for bond.

You always request to speak with an immigration judge, so your case will not suffer any delay. However, never sign any deportation or voluntary departure orders without first talking to an immigration attorney. It is very important to seek advice from an Immigration attorney as many people receive incorrect or false information at the time of arrest.

It feels like years have passed since we were able to have large networking events for the MI Hispanic Contractors Association (MI-HCA). Since March, we have provided Zoom mem-bership meetings, MIOSHA training and our Q2 event on Safety & Support for Contractors was a “vir-tual success”. However, we truly had a tremendous turn-out to the MI Hispanic Contractors Association

event on Thursday, February 27th! Over 150 registered participants came out to the Kiosko Banquet Hall to network and learn about “Resources & Opportunities to Build their (Construction) Business.” A meaningful and impact-ful bilingual program was offered and included an unexpected visit from the esteemed Joseph Galvan, the Midwest Regional Administrator for HUD and

his team. Both the Program Sponsor, Alliance Catholic Credit Union (ACCU), and the Opportunity & Resource Sponsor, O’Brien Construction took to the stage and shared incredible support for the member-ship. Respectively, offering bilingual business banking resources at ACCU- and free, capacity-building work-shops offered quarterly by O’Brien. In addition, ‘La Z’

La escuela de Holy Redeemer es una escuela de Eco-Verde que ah hecho un esfuerzo para tener una mentalidad ecologica. Una manera para mejorar su huella de carbono es reducir el uso de botellas de plástico. Los estudi-antes y familias recaudaron fon-dos para tres estaciones de servi-cio de agua. Un socio local, Ideal Group, y vicepresidenta Linzie Venegas donaron 250 botellas de agua reutilizables a los estu-diantes y facultad para reducir los residuos plásticos. Pero eso no es todo. Con la mano de la Ideal Group, el Ideal Contracting instalo tres estaciones de agua para llenar las botellas en toda la escuela. Esto va permitir estudi-antes y facultad para llenar sus nuevos vasos rápido y fomentan-do la conservación del agua.

A highlight of the eve-ning was the registration of the 100th Member of the MI-HCA, Moises Martin, owner of MMA Building. Both Moises and Juan Pedro Martinez, the very first registered MI-HCA member were honored with the gift of a professional portfolio provided by the Southwest Detroit Business Association.

Lead Abatement Training

The City of Detroit has close to $20 million in Lead Abatement contracts allo-cated over the next five years, with $9.7 million in Southwest Detroit’s 48209 zip code. The MI-HCA iden-tified the problem that there were no Latino contractors certified with the City of

Detroit. With the help of the Southwest Detroit Business Association, a partnership with the City of Detroit was created.

The MI-HCA promised to provide outreach to the community (and delivered). The Erb Family Foundation then provided funding for the pilot program for bilingual Lead Abatement Certifications. The City of Detroit ensured additional funding for the second Lead Abatement Certification course in Spanish.

To date, 13 participants from the first cohort have completed the required 32-hour coursework and passed the State of Michigan Lead Abatement Certification exam, 5 compa-nies will be Licensed by the State of Michigan as Lead Abatement Firms, and an

additional 11 participants will have completed their coursework from the second cohort and will be preparing to take the certi-fication exam. There is a wait-ing list of over 30 Spanish-speaking con-tractors who are anxiously awaiting the additional funding for this program to continue.

Ideal Group Helps Reduce Waste at Holy

School is an Eco-Green School that strives to be ecologically minded. One way to improve its carbon footprint is to reduce plastic bottle usage. Holy Redeemer students and fam-ily members raised funds for three water filling stations and to do so, a local partner, Ideal Group, and VP Linzie Venegas donated 250 reusable water bottles to the students and faculty to cut back on plastic waste. But that’s not all. Ideal Group’s construction arm, Ideal Contracting installed three water bottle filling sta-tions throughout the school in early February. This will allow the students and faculty to quickly fill up their new water bottles while encouraging water conservation.

Parece que han pasado años desde que pudimos tener grandes eventos para hacer contactos (de redes) para la Asociación de Contratistas Hispanos de MI (MI-HCA, por sus siglas en ingles). Desde marzo, hemos brindado reuniones virtu-ales de membresía, capaci-

Se ofre-ció un programa bilingüe significativo e impactante que incluyó una visita ines-perada del estimado Joseph Galván, el Administrador Regional del Medio Oeste de HUD (Vivienda y Desarrollo Urbano) y su equipo. Entrenamiento de Reducción de Plomo

La ciudad de Detroit tiene cerca de $ 20 mil-lones de dólares asignados para contratos para la Reducción de Plomo en los próximos cinco años, con $ 9.7 millones para el código postal 48209 del Suroeste de Detroit. El MI-HCA identi-ficó el problema de que no había contratistas latinos certificados con la Ciudad de Detroit. Con la ayuda de la Asociación de Negocios del Suroeste de Detroit, se creó una sociedad con la Ciudad.

El MI-HCA prometió proveer una difusión comu-nitaria (y se llevo a cabo). In Honor of Monica Echeverri Casarez

En honor a Mónica Echeverri Casarez

Monica Casarez was an advocate for small busi-nesses and she dedicated her life to the celebration of the rich cultural history and diversity of our com-munity. She was intimately involved in the community, but she also worked on the frontlines as a healthcare professional which ulti-mately cost her life due to COVID-19. She passed away from complications of the disease this past April. Many Southwest Detroiters had the privilege of know-ing and working alongside Monica on projects ranging from providing technical assistance for small busi-ness owners and entre-preneurs, to coordinating seasonal holiday festivi-ties, pulling together the extraordinary exhibit on Southwest Detroit at the Detroit Historical Museum and her most passionate project in recent years, the launch and evolution of the annual Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week. She also contributed many articles to the SDBA Community News.

The Southwest Detroit Restaurant Week Patronocity campaign was able to fund raise $9,030

in Monica’s memory. This money will go directly to the businesses most affected. SDBA encourages friends and supporters to continue supporting these

businesses with all COVID-19 safety precau-tions. This will give our local businesses the ability to continue moving for-ward.
