Case Study- Kieran/Timberlake

Loblolly House

The Loblolly house, set on the edge of Chesapeake Bay on Taylors Island, Maryland is a house that immediately connects you with your childhood. Stephan Kieran along with his partner, James Timberlake, modeled this 2,200 square foot 3 story home built on 4 acres of wooded loblolly pines with the feel between a tree house and a duck blind. Camouflaging three of the sides with strips of red cedar to match one of the many duck blinds located along the lake and raising the main level on tree like stilts to resemble a tree fort. When you walk up the stairs of the house you get a very warm feeling that sends you back in time to when as a child you could escape the day by venturing to your tree house.

When you are inside the house it is separated by a small hallway with decking offshoots which emphasize going through the house to get from room to room. The materials chosen for this home from the furnish-ings to the rich wood in the interior as well as the exterior, create a warm and relaxing environment. The floor to celling retractable glass wall overlooking the loblolly pines make you feel as if you are floating in the trees. They achieve this feeling through the blend-ed connection between the exterior and interior. Whats better than having a tree house when your 8? Having a tree house when your 50!

Highlighting particular areas around corktown that are emitting “warmth” to the neighborhood. The Rings expanding from the key points are the warmth radiating through that part of the city. As each ring grows, it influences the neighborhood to react and continue the ring. The areas where the ring has been blocked, are areas that need improvement. The Goal of this mapping is to eventually have rings reacting with each other all over the city and not have any disconnections.

Corktown Site Design- Breaking the thresholds of Michigan Avenue, Wabash, 14th and Daizelle, you are enticed into the space by wooden louvres that are angled in different directions that attract you to take in the full scope of the space. When entering, there is an out-reaching wooden structure that leads you to explore the site down each access. The parking lot blends seamlessly with the green spaces located around the lot by special brick that allows grass to sprout between the voids. Centrally located in the lot is a fountain with public seating that also blends with the surrounding vegetation using this special brick. The residential retail uses a symmetrically curving plan that helps filter sound waves into the surrounding areas. The rear brick wall of the hotel and the slight tilt of the front facade of the buildings help facilitate the movement of the sound. The void space on the south end of the site is being utilized as a three tier congregation space that also acts as a buffer for the sound moving through the area.

Corktown Credit Union Using the Previous investigation of the “termed” site plan and looking at precedence bank studies to develop a three story mixed-use building. The program is to house residential living units on the upper floors and a community credit union and gallery on the lower and ground levels while also incorporating the Duncan speedometer building into the design of your structure.

Breaking the threshold of Michigan Avenue, you are enticed into the space by warm colors of light shining through slits cut into the cantilevered roof tempting you to explore. When entering, you are greeted with natural light, leading you into the bank or gallery. The layout of the floor plans are based off of centralization and provide a strong sense of community in the form of a common room. By designing for the sensation of feeling welcome, I created a congregation space around the gallery that acts as an exterior art exhibit that all can enjoy. As you ascend up the stairs, there are sliding doors leading to the deck that blend the exterior with the interior and allow you to modify the room as needed. The natural light filtered through the building, facilitates a warming atmosphere and creates a hierarchy between public and private spaces. Emphasizing the connection with the customer or tenant.
