Since a dedicated optical fiber is laid from the access node location to each individual user, all users can be provided with an ’unlimited’ dedicated transmission rate (today, typically 1 Gbps and more in the future).
To reduce the FTTH build cost, Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) becomes interesting when upgrading existing old fiber to neighbourhoods and when connecting distant areas where cost of fiber cables is prohibitive.
