OUR GOAL

To restore hope to the street youth and juveniles through discipleship, trauma counselling, and skill training in order to transform their lives to enable them to become productive disciples of Jesus in their communities.

SUMMARY

The GIFT Home (Gulu Institute for Transformation) is our proposed rehabilitation center for youths that are coming in off of the streets and out of gangs, or are being released to us from the local juvenile detention center. The centre has two buildings that are under construction and requires additional funds to finish to a level that can house 100 students at a time. The estimated budget to build this out is about $ 264,000. This includes construction as well as furnishing the interiors, and first year operational costs for transportation, feeding, farming project, and conferences.

There are over 100 juveniles in the local juvenile detention center, which our missionary team are currently visiting regularly to disciple, pray, and counsel. In addition to this, there are over 200 other youths living on the streets of Gulu as thieves, night robbers, and criminals. It’s become such a threat to the city, and the government has even asked us to expedite this project as much as possible, as they can see the benefits our work with the youth is having not only on those individuals, but even with the decreased crime rates.

Most of these youth were born during and after the war, so grew up without parents, in poverty, and without access to education.

BACKGROUND

We began evangelizing to the street youths, and since September 2019 have spent hours daily with them – praying, discipling, and teaching. We have gone into the ghettos where they are. So far, over 200 of them have given their lives to the Lord, gotten baptized, and undergone trauma counselling. In addition to

Page 3: CONCEPT PAPER FOR GULU ADP · Web viewTo provide career guidance and counselling as young women and men move into the labor market. To accommodate and rehabilitate the street kids

developing them spiritually, we’ve also been feeding over 100 each day, and providing clothes as needed. We are currently housing 30 of them in a temporary rental home, to provide a safe shelter in order to get them off of the streets and out of a life of crime. Our goal is that once the GIFT Home is built, these 30 youths will transition to live there, and we will also be able to bring in more.

When there is a family available, we do resettle the youth back in their own communities – providing them with food and work tools, and following up with them regularly to ensure their continued maturation and growth.

We’ve also enrolled 100 of the youths in schools or vocational institutes to help set them up for a successful future.

Since December 2017, we’ve been regularly partnering the Gulu Remand Home (a juvenile detention center) – providing trauma counselling and preaching the word of God to them. We’ve seen over 60 kids each month get saved, and countless lives are being transformed.

TESTIMONIES SO FAR…

Above pictures: Over 200 street kids/youth gathered at the House of Prayer in Gulu town and attending discipleship and counselling classes. They attend these classes on daily basis - Monday to Sunday from 2:00PM to 7:00PM. They are fed with lunch and prayed for before they return to their street dwelling places (homes). The youth each receive a brand new Bible and are being taken through Bible study programs on a daily basis. Each youth received a note book and a pen to take notes.

Above pictures: The street youth/kids queuing for the daily meals we provide. For many of them, this is the only meal they eat each day.

Above pictures: We’ve also paid for medical care as needed. Many of them have health problems, ranging from physical wounds, to STD’s, to UTI’s, amongst other illnesses.

Above pictures: 6 kids have been resettled to their home districts of Lamwo, Agago, Kitgum, Pader and Omoro. We resettle as many of them as possible to their close relatives or real parents. During the resettlement time, we buy some food items to take to the homes where they will settle.

Above Pictures: 35 youth/kids have been settled in a home we are renting for them as we disciple and train them, until the GIFT Home is built. They attend morning and evening devotions and Bible lessons with our staff.

Above pictures: Girls who are now in a vocational training - learning hair dressings and tailoring. The girls will spend a maximum of 6 months in this vocational school (GWATC- Gulu War Affected Training Center). We have entered into a special study arrangement with the school management to take these girls through the required training skills and thereafter we will resettle them with necessary package to begin their own income generating business in both tailoring and hairdressing.

Above pictures: Our team regularly visits the slums of Gulu to disciple, counsel, and teach the youth living in these areas.
