Considering the activities performed by an Astrophysist, three occupational spaces (Rest, Work, Leisure) were created to interact in a single volumecreating a Trajectory and two points of hinge.

The Astrophysist studies Astronomy from the physics point of view of celestial bodies

The purpose of this project wasto create three spaces withdifferent qualities, joined by atrajectory and distinguishedwithin points of hinge creatinghierarchies among momentsdesign for an specific user, an Astrophysist

Considering the main aspects of study of an Astrophysist, the main objective of design was the creation of spaces that were able to give some isolation while allowing the user to study the universe from any point whether the user isworking, relaxing or resting, providing a constant conection with his passion.

The overall design of this project consists in the embracement of a set of spaces by one volume this, like the universe where the sun embraces the planets. Three curves coming from thesame origin creating a space for Rest, Work and Leisure

The place designed for Rest isthe epicenter of the project which embraces the Work (center) and Leisure spaces. This can be seen on the exterior curves overlaping creating spaces

Page 7: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

A constant interaction between the user and the sky anduniverse is achieved by several top openings and glass roofs all around the project at the three specific spaces and their junction points

The user will be also able to interact within several enclosed spaces providingprivacy through special glass wall without leaving the concept of permanent contact with the external environment

Page 8: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

The Astrophysist’s house achieveda unique connection between user and the environment thanksto several extentions of the internal spaces to the exterior creating terraces all around the project with a wide view of the sky

Different scales of spacesprovide unique experienceswithin a single volumeA multidirectial trajectory provides a continius movement that joinsthe three main spacesusing neutral points ashinges for transition

Starting by analazing the structure of Mexicocity a set of different connections were createdin this first experimental model showing thedifferent axis connected to a point of hierarchystablishing the city

The city has been created to incorporate different elementsinto one system giving birth toa series of unique spaces

Page 16: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

A very important aspect of the city is its abilityto mimic nature through artificial elementscreating variety of spaces in between

After analizing these important aspects of a city, strong conceptsare extracted to strenght the elements of intevention that arenext used in the city of Savannah, GA

Page 17: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

iinntteerrvveenntiiooonnnThe project is meant to open up the grey part of the city to the green, fresh and more delightful part of it to enjoy it in the way every city should be experienced, walking.

Working on the historic centerof Savannah, GA brought agood opportunity to interactwith the city, history and reinforce its harmonic connection between human development and nature

Page 18: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

The purpose of this exercise was to explore the conceptsof door, window, stair and incorporate them into an spatial proposal at urban level impact. These concepts were also analized as aperture, thresholdand path with the intention of allow them to interactwith the specific site given within the city to create an articulated circulation and variety of spaces varying inscale, purpose and qualities

Page 19: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

The proposal makes the user to enter into the big mass of concrete and masonry over the street to take it to an interior path experiencing gardens through the interior of the volume while enjoying a drink and finally directed to the park in the back.As my first approach and considering all the most important characteristics of the city and specifically of Broughton St., I want to propose a Cultural Center and Cafe where art, culture and history can be admire while a connection between the heavy feeling of the concrete and masonry facades of the buildings and the fresh and peaceful experience of nature meet in the site.

Page 20: Conceptual Design Portfolio - Joseph Paipilla -

The interior space created allows the user to experience a totally different feeling of the historic district’s classic buildings and give a better opportunity to enjoy nature within the mass that the buildings are.

The user can go to the upper levels through ramps where art and historical expositions will allow the user to learn more about the city. The user is also redirected down from the ramps or directly from the front entrance to the Green space in the middle of the building which will take it to the back through a set of gardens connecting the project and Telfair Square in the back.

A more pleasant trajectory is created forthe user walking Broughton St. by getting drawn into this unique contemporary space and finally getting relaxed interacting with nature within the main space and leading a trajectory of history and nature ending at Forsyth park connected by an ortagonal structure of natural parks.
