  • Chicago possesses a rich shipping history, from its early years as a city boasting both large ports along Lake Michigan and a vibrant ship building industry. The site located at the mouth of the Chicago River is a viable position for an architecture which acknowledges an understanding of the history of the place. The architecture takes on a similar language to large ports of todays global economy, bringing the site into a modern era. The massive cargo cranes that stand as sentinels along these ports have been the driving force; providing both repetition, structural language, and form. This language has also been translated to the park design, organizing space and program amongst a loose diagonal framework. Connection to the site via a proposed monorail line moves passengers between Navy Pier and the Loop District. The architecture, program, and park create a place appropriate to the site and strengthen the history of Chicagos harbor industry. DuSable Terminal, the modern port.

The class was a rapid, one week, design solution addressing the needs and requests of the neighborhood surrounding the park. Major driving factors included safety, providing activities for all ages, and minimizing the potential for loitering and vandalism. The end result looked to capitalize on the existing topography and infrastructure; using land formations to create separate spaces for program insertion and preserving the soccer field and skate park. The high point was used for locating a guard station, while natural bowls were used for a childrens playground, adult fitness installations, and volleyball courts. The courts serve dual purpose as a large gathering space for community events, coupling with a performance stage nested against a steep slope.

The concept of a five and ten minute walking radius is to show standard distances the average person is willing to walk to reach a destination. Destinations or people living outside of these circles result in a higher inclination to drive . The walks are used for determining open public space locations, retail areas, and mass transit stops. The circles also show areas that are being under serviced either by a lack of destinations or lying outside of a circle. Areas of overlap occur and show parts of the population that are served by multiple destinations. The more overlap the greater the opportunity for diverse activities and interests.

    WALKABILITY SECTORS

These areas defined on the map are a synthesis of the information acquired during the survey taken while in Ord. The information regarding safety, aesthetics, surface , conditions, lighting, and vegetation has all been pulled together and simplified into these five levels of walkability. Breaking the town down into these areas allows for a quick visual understanding of the areas of town that would benefit the most from improvements to the quality of the infrastructure in place, additions to the amount of infrastructure, and improvements to the overall aesthetic qualities of the right of way. The breakdown is defined by how well the right of way meets the criteria of walkability.

DOwNTOwN OrDAfter an in depth analysis of Ord, NE it was concluded that a new industry would be required for Ord to become a greater regional hub. The solution explored how the downtown and grain elevators could begin to relocate and consolidate, providing prime areas for growth in the retail and commercial sectors as well as industrial. The industrial solution was to increase usage of the rail line by locating a prefab housing factory at the terminus of the line. The factory would provide skilled labor employment opportunities as well as managerial and design positions; filling a service gap seen in many towns across Nebraska. The homes could then be used to in-fill plots in Ord, providing housing options for the anticipated population increase.

  • The project started with a study of current apartment building typologies and the use of the land for parking and green space. The resulting solution challenges the normative approach to the three story walk-up and gives space back to the residents. Parking is placed below grade and along narrow, pedestrian-centered streets. The space otherwise used for parking becomes courtyards between buildings; acting as front yards and areas of high activity to promote a greater sense of community. In addition to the site organization, the interior organization of the apartment building was challenged to appeal to a broader demographic by the creation of one, two, and three bedroom options, each unit having access to private, usable outdoor space.

The project brief was to rethink the 24 hour outpatient solution in 48 hours. The focus of the solution was the patient experience; keeping both patient and accompanying family calm and comfortable. The major design move was to angle the wall and headboard for a more direct view of the outdoors, and yet still maintain visibility of the patient for the nurses and other staff. Connecting the patient to the outdoors reduces the need for extended stays and helps keep patients in an outpatient situation. The racetrack floor plan and dispersed nursing stations allows for effective staffing and creates areas for family to gather outside the room. The inclusion of a wellness program promotes preventative health for patients, family, and staff.

  • bryAN Lgh CANCEr CENTErA relationship with Bryan LGH for the semester on multiple projects resulted in the development of an outpatient cancer center. The decision was made to explore an alternative to the typical patient room; increasing patient and family comfort and facilitating efficient workflow. The resulting room relocates the bathroom out of the room proper, allowing more space for family while lowering the amount of overlap and circulation space. Several key design elements (sliding doors, recessed exam lights, dual headboards, modular furniture and charting nook) work to enhance either workflow or patient comfort. The dual headboards allow for two different bed configurations depending on if the patient is in a hospice or outpatient condition

sOUTh OmAhA hOsPITALThe hospital started with a thirty bed straw program to which clinical space and wellness program components were added based on the needs of the surrounding community. The spatial organization minimizes the elimination of views for the Omaha Housing Authority residents to the north, while maximizing the hospitals visibility form Q Street and Kennedy Freeway. Major vehicular circulation is confined to the south along 27th Street, off the residential streets to the north, allowing for pedestrian-centered movement to Metro Community College and the surrounding community. The formal design inspiration is drawn from the sites history as part of the Omaha Stockyards and the industrys reliance on rail lines. The project is ongoing.
