Copublications (JPCS and a regular journal) usually operate under one of two models:•Plenary papers and selected best papers published in regular journal, and rest of contributions published in Conf Series•Regular journal commissions a “conference inspired” special issue (to include the best work from the conference AND some related work not presented at the conference), and Conf Series publishes all other contributions from the conference:

• e.g. EUCAS (Applied Superconductivity) 2009, 2011, and 2013 (co-publication with Superconductor Science and Technology)

• SCES (Strongly Correlated Electron Systems) 2010 and 2011 (Co publication with Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter)

• Fast receipt to publication, 3 months on average

• Peer review managed by IOP to the same standard as other regular papers

• Choice of publishing as a regular paper (subscription access) or on an Open Access basis (APCs apply in the latter case)

• Liberal Creative Commons licence (CC-BY 3.0) for all ‘gold’ OA papers

Conference papers in Journal of Instrumentation

• Community-oriented online-only journal, launched in 2006 and jointly owned by SISSA Medialab and IOP Publishing offering fully peer-reviewed, fast, open-access publication of conference or workshop proceedings at very moderate cost to conference organizers and at no cost to authors

• Free open access publication is unsustainable in the medium term

• From 2013, any conference proceedings articles in JINST will be published on the same basis as regular research papers. Authors will be able to choose to publish their articles on an open access basis, using a hybrid open access option

• Articles published on an open-access basis will be under the CC-BY 3.0 licence

• IOP Publishing and SISSA Medialab will take revenues from article processing charges fully into account when setting subscription prices for JINST, to ensure that publication costs are not paid for twice, through both subscription and publication charges
