C O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

Old Testament Reading Jeremiah 26:1-161In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came from the LORD: 2“Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD’s house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word. 3It may be they will listen, and every one turn from his evil way, that I may relent of the disaster that I intend to do to them because of their evil deeds. 4You shall say to them,

Page 22: Confession and Absolution

‘Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you, 5and to listen to the words of my servants the prophets whom I send to you urgently, though you have not listened, 6then I will make this house like Shiloh, and I will make this city a curse for all the nations of the earth.’”7The priests and the prophets and all the people heard Jeremiah speaking these words in the house of the LORD. 8And when Jeremiah had finished speaking all that the LORD had commanded him to speak to all the people, then the priests

Page 23: Confession and Absolution

and the prophets and all the people laid hold of him, saying, “You shall die! 9Why have you prophesied in the name of the LORD, saying, ‘This house shall be like Shiloh, and this city shall be desolate, without inhabitant’?” And all the people gathered around Jeremiah in the house of the LORD.10When the officials of Judah heard these things, they came up from the king’s house to the house of the LORD and took their seat in the entry of the New Gate of the house of the LORD. 11Then the priests and the prophets said to the officials and

Page 24: Confession and Absolution

to all the people, “This man deserves the sentence of death, because he has prophesied against this city, as you have heard with your own ears.”12Then Jeremiah spoke to all the officials and all the people, saying, “The LORD sent me to prophesy against this house and this city all the words you have heard. 13Now therefore mend your ways and your deeds, and obey the voice of the LORD your God, and the LORD will relent of the disaster that he has pronounced against you. 14But as for me, behold, I am in your hands. Do with me

Page 25: Confession and Absolution

as seems good and right to you. 15Only know for certain that if you put me to death, you will bring innocent blood upon yourselves and upon this city and its inhabitants, for in truth the LORD sent me to you to speak all these words in your ears.”16Then the officials and all the people said to the priests and the prophets, “This man does not deserve the sentence of death, for he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.” A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Epistle – 1 Peter 1:3-93Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation

Epistleready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8Though

Page 28: Confession and Absolution

Epistleyou have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. A This is the Word of the Lord.C Thanks be to God.

Holy GospelP The Holy Gospel according to St. John,

the fifteenth chapter.C Glory to You, O Lord. 17These things I command you, so that you will love one another.18“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. 19If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the

Holy Gospelworld, therefore the world hates you. 20Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. 21But all these things they will do to you on account of my name, because they do not know him who sent me. P This is the Gospel of the Lord.C Praise to You, O Christ.

“These words, ‘Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,’ show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words. For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.”

SUBMISSION• The qualities the Bible upholds have become

qualities that our culture holds in contempt

• Our cultures view of submission?• Much prefer autonomy and self-sufficiency.

• Submission is a discipline all Christians are called to• Ephesians 5:21 – “submitting to one another out

of reverence for Christ”• 1 Corinthians 10:24 – “Let no one seek his own

good, but the good of his neighbor.”• Luke 9:23 – Jesus says, “If anyone would come

after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” • Daily relates to everyday vocations

Page 43: Confession and Absolution

Not only all Christians submit to one another, Christ himself submits to his Father. LUKE 2:51

Jesus is himself under vocation – called as a child who responded to Mary & Joseph’s calling as parents.

Luke 22:42 – Jesus also submits to His Heavenly Father fulfilling His calling to be Savior of the world.

1 Corinthians 15:28 - When he returns he will once again submit.

Again…submission does not mean unequal! It implies a distinction.

Page 44: Confession and Absolution

Submission is intrinsic in every vocation in some form

Love/serve neighbor? Employee/Boss?Mother/Baby?Citizen/Law?Church member/Church?

To understand submission in marriage we must look to the relationship between Christ and the church.

Philippians 2:5-8Is Christ oppressive to His bride? Cruel? How do we receive the gifts He freely gives to us?

Submission in faith

Page 45: Confession and Absolution

Ephesians 5:22“Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to

the Lord.”

Christ himself stands hidden behind the marriage – marital authority ultimately

belongs to the Lord.

Thus, when the wife submits to her husband, she is submitting to Christ who is hidden in her husband.

Husbands dare not abuse Christ’s authority nor wives disregard it!

Page 46: Confession and Absolution

So, if the purpose of vocation is to love and serve…

And God promises to be present and active through that love and service…

And the wife fulfills her calling by loving and serving her husband…

Then submission is simply her expression of love and her act of service…

AND thus finds its fulfillment in receiving the husband’s sacrifice of himself for her.

…..Tune in next week as we finish up the vocation of wife: submission as a chain of transmitting blessings and diving into Proverbs 31 to discover what the wife is to do.

Prayer of the Church

Page 49: Confession and Absolution

Following the prayers, the people may greet one another in the name of the Lord, saying, “Peace be with you,” as a sign of reconciliation and of the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (Matt. 5:22–24; Eph. 4:1–3).

Service of the SacramentOUR COMMUNION PRACTICE

It is our public confession that each individual who partakes of the Lord’s Supper here at St. Peter, receives the true body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Those who participate in this Sacrament publicly bear witness to their unity in faith and doctrine. We welcome to commune, those who are confirmed members of St. Peter and of other congregations of our Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod. If you have not previously communed here at St. Peter, please speak with one of the pastors prior to communing.

PrefaceP The Lord be with you.C And also with you.P Lift up your hearts.C We lift them to the Lord.P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.C It is right to give Him thanks and

praise.P It is truly good, right, and salutary that we

should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all creation. Above all, we give

Page 55: Confession and Absolution

Prefacethanks for Your boundless love shown to us

when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. Because He is now risen from the dead and lives and reigns to all eternity, all who believe in Him will overcome sin and death and will rise again to new life. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and saying:

Prayer of ThanksgivingP Blessed are You, O Lord our God, king of all

creation, for You have had mercy on us and given Your only-begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. In Your righteous judgment You condemned the sin of Adam and Eve, who ate the forbidden fruit, and You justly barred them and all their children from the tree of life. Yet, in Your great mercy, You promised salvation by a second Adam, Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord,

Page 58: Confession and Absolution

Prayer of Thanksgivingand made His cross a life-giving tree for all who trust in Him. We give You thanks for the redemption You have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Grant us Your Holy Spirit that we may faithfully eat and drink of the fruits of His cross and receive the blessings of forgiveness, life, and salvation that come to us in His body and blood. Hear us as we pray in His name and as He has taught us:

Lord's PrayerC Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
