Notes from the Cantor ……………………………………….

LIGHT and DARK The concept of light and dark is prevalent not only in Hanukkah but throughout Judaism, Jewish history, and our liturgy. In the Torah: In the story of creation, God “spoke” light into being (Genesis 1: 30). This was the first step in the process of creating order out of a universe described as “tohu vavohu,” translated in our Etz Hayim Humash as “unformed and void.” In the prayers: The liturgy of our daily prayers car r ies this concept fur ther by descr ibing God as “yotser or uvorei hoshech, oseh shalom uvorei et hakol – Creator of light and dark, Maker of peace and Creator of everything.” (Barchu of the morning service). Could peace as described here equate with light? The next prayers after the Barchu - both in the evening (Ahavat Olam) and the morning services (Ahavah Rabbah) - develop this theme further by implying that the Torah that God gave us because of His love for us, represents light. The Havdallah prayer recited at the close of Shabbat and holidays, equates the Jewish People, the Shabbat and our holidays with light and holiness. In Hanukkah: The Hebrew word for candle used to light the other candles, “shamash”, is spelled exactly the same way as the Hebrew word for sun – shemesh. Other names for Hanukkah include (an alliterating play on words) - Hag Ha’or, Hag Hadror – Holiday of Light, Holiday of Freedom, equating freedom with light. The menorah in the original Temples had seven branches, representing seven days of God’s creation, ie. God’s pres-ence. In another relevant play on words, the Hebrew word for eight – shmoneh, as in the candles lit on Hanukkah, has the identical root as the Hebrew word for oil – shemen. Oil was basic to creating light. Interestingly, the number 8 turned on its side is the symbol for infinity! The world recently lost the great Jewish musician and poet Leonard Cohen, who wrote, “There is a crack in every thing, that’s how the light gets in.” And Peter Yarrow of Peter Paul and Mary fame wrote in his famous song that now has become associated with Hanukkah, “Don’t let the light go out, it’s lasted for so many years, don’t let the light go out, let it shine through our love and our tears.” Despite Hanukkah being a minor holiday, its message remains as powerful and cogent as ever, particularly for us as Jews and Americans in this pivotal election year. The future direction of our Presidency and country remains to be seen. Israel represents the modern spirit of our ancient Maccabees. The short lived victory of the Maccabees perhaps is a reminder that, in the concluding words of the prophetic haftorah of Hanukkah, “…lo v’chayil v’lo v’hoach, ki im b’ru-chi – not by might, nor by power, but by My spirit, says the Lord of Hosts.” (Zachariah 4: 6) On this Hanukkah, as we approach the secular year of 2017, let us take to heart the words of the late President John Kennedy in his 1960 Democratic Convention acceptance speech, the well-known adage. “Don’t curse the darkness, light the candle that can guide us through that darkness.” Join us on Shabbat Hanukkah December 31, for a special Hanukkah celebration in word and song, and together we will usher in the new secular year! Wishing you all a Hanukkah holiday of light and warmth and the best of years in 2017! Hazzan Ivor Lichterman

HANUKKAH BEGINS SATURDAY NIGHT, DEC. 24

That miracle - the triumph of the spirit, the victory of faith - we celebrate when we light the hanukkah candles: First candle – Dec. 24; Eighth candle – Dec. 31.

KINDLING THE LIGHTS

On Shabbat Hanukkah, the Hanukkah lights are kindled before the Shabbat candles. On Erev Shabbat, it is customary to use special, extra-long Chanukah candles, since the fulfillment of the mitz-vah requires that the Hanukkah lights burn for at least one half hour after dark. The candles in your Menorah should be placed in a straight row, since no day of Hanukkah is supe-rior to another. Only the Shammes - kindler and guardian of the lights - the 9th candle, should stand higher than the others. The Hanukkah lights should be kindled after dark (except on Friday night). This is the proper way to kindle the lights: On the first night place one candle in the Menorah at the extreme right. On the other seven nights, place the candles from right to left, adding one each night. Light the Shammes. With it light the candle on the left first. Before lighting the candles, each night two brachot (blessings) are recited, except for the first night when three brachot are recited. On all nights light the Shammes and recite:

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, asher kid’shanu b’mitzvotav v’tzivanu l’hadlik neyr shel hanukkah. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by Thy com-mandments, and commanded us to kindle the lights of Hanukkah.

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, sheh-asah nissim la-avoteinu ba-yamim ha-heim ba-z’man ha-zeh. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has performed miracles for our fathers in days of old, at this season. The following blessing is added and recited on the first evening only:

Barukh attah adonai, eloheinu melekh ha-olam, she-he-che-yanu, v’ki-y’-manu, v’hi-gi-anu, la-z’ man ha-zeh. Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us in life, and sustained us, and enabled us to reach this season.

The Chosen

In 1944, in Brooklyn, two 15-year-old Jewish youths living in the same pre-dominant Jewish neighborhood, Reu-ven "Robert" Malter and Daniel "Danny" Saunders, become unlikely friends. One is from a very conserva-tive family, and the other is more liber-al. The issues of importance of tradi-tion, parental expectations and the for-mation of Israel cause constant friction.

Youth & Education News…………………………………….

David S. Stone Religious School December is upon us and we have a lot going on at David S. Stone Religious School. Sharon Lapitsky has been teaching an interactive unit about Israel to all of our 8th grade students. They are reaching out to our friends in the Western Galilee to make connections with our Partnership region. When our students go on their trip to Israel in a couple of years they will have friends to visit in Israel, just as last year’s class trip had an opportunity to meet with Israeli teens. Peter Silverman’s class has been corresponding with students in Israel as well. Our goal is to make a personal Israel connection for all of our students, working hand in hand with our Partnership region. Paulette Sherline’s class received a video of Israeli students hand delivering to the Kotel actual notes written by our students. All of our students are working diligently on some exciting Hanukkah projects. We are looking forward to celebrating with our Jewish community at the Hanukkah Palooza program on December 11. December 18 is our Religious School’s Hanukkah celebration. There will be a Latke party and a Menorah making contest for all families from 11:15-12:00. Our 8-10th grade students will have the opportunity to take a JLI course with Peter Silver-man and Shmuel Matusof covering Jewish ethics. We are looking forward to this valuable teaching unit for our teens. Megan Van Dyke has been having a great time getting to know all of our youngest students with our Parent/child class for ages 3 and under. All are welcome! Please see calendar for dates and times.

New Members………………………………………………….

Social Action Committee

There will be opportunities to volunteer at Kingston over the Christmas holiday. Please watch for further information in the upcoming weekly emails.

Sheila and Stan Odesky are very pleased to have joined B'nai Israel. Married for 53 years, Stan is a native of Toledo and Sheila was born and raised in Pittsburgh. They have two daughters, Bonnie Berland and Cheryl Moser and five grandchildren. They are very active in the community, as Sheila is President of the Toledo Lucas County Library Board of Trustees and Stan serves on the Alumni Board of the University of Toledo.

Bonnie, Becca and Seth Berland would like to thank the members of CBI for the warm welcome that the congregation has extended us. I (Bonnie) am in fact not really a new member of CBI. Back in the early 70’s I was Consecrated at CBI and attended Sunday School here for many years. I am President of Stanford H. Odesky and Associates, a local market research firm. I enjoy spending my free time with my family and friends, playing mah jong and reading. My daughter Rebecca (Becca), graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in May and is gainfully employed at a Fortune 500 firm. Next Fall she will be moving to Boston – any contacts would be appreciated! Seth, a sophomore at the University of Cincinnati is very involved with his fraternity – Alpha Epsilon Pi – and is majoring in sports administration/marketing.

RUMMAGE SALE UPDATE B’nai Israel / Etz Chayim co-sisterhood Rummage Sale “ B’yachad / Together” / Huge Success B’yachad, together we planned, we schlepped, we unpacked, schlepped again, we folded, we hung, we pinned, we sorted, and, most of all we had a great time together. We are most grateful to all who cleaned out their closets, their basements, their garages and provided yet another top notch sale. Thank you to all of our volunteers who gave us their time, their expertise, their good humor and amazing energy you made it work!! Thank you to the “guys” of the hood, to Larry Johnson, whose extra muscle power helped significantly. Thank you to Leslie Podolsky, Rhoda Miller, Chuck Traugott, Cantor Lichterman, Howard Rosenberg, whose constant mention the from bulletin, weekly Torah guides, shul emails, and bima greatly contributed to our success. Thank you, Marcia Grossman, and Diane Treuhaft, our Etz Chayim “sisters of the hood” co-chairs, to Elsa Leveton, her staff, and to the volunteers in the kitchen who lovingly prepared delicious lunches and snacks. B’yachad works!

Again and again, thank you all….we are always open to suggestions and comments. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Always looking to making a good idea, better!

Fagie Benstein, Judy Scheinbach

Your Generosity Helps Many in Need Jewish Family Service thanks B’nai Israel congregants for generously participating in this year’s High Holiday Food Drive. Many, many bags of groceries and other items were donated. Your generous contributions will serve the needs of our community neighbors for quite some time. JFS gives food, fresh produce, paper goods, and personal care items to individuals and helps them discover other resources to get through the crisis. Your support is vital to the operation of the food pantry and greatly appreciated! Thank you to everyone who made the food drive possible, including Nate Segall who, once again, donated a truck trailer in which to store and transport bags of food from The Temple to JFS. Todah rabah!

Happy Hanukkah to all of our C.B.I. Family!

AND THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION CONTINUES...

.

It was with great excitement that we dedicated a beautiful work of art in

commemoration of B’nai Israel’s 150th anniversary. This idea was a collaboration between the

150th Committee and the Past Presidents of our Sisterhood. The majority of the money for this

project came from the Sisterhood fund and was approved by the Past Presidents. The remainder

of the cost was funded through the 150th Anniversary fundraising efforts. The committee members

are Ann Rosenberg, Gabi Mallin, Sue Richards, Kathryn Linver, Dena Eber, Sharon Stein, Cathy

Sperling, and Fran Weinblatt.

This project began two years ago. The Sisterhood Presidents expressed a desire to have

the artwork on the outside of the building. As we pondered how to find an artist or artists for

this job, several people brought up the names of talented members that we have within our

congregation, specifically Adam Goldberg and Helen Grubb.

Adam Goldberg is a great-grandson of our late Rabbi Emeritus, Dr. Morton Goldberg.

At the age of 15, Adam was introduced to glass at the Toledo Museum of Art. After receiving his

Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Bowling Green State University, Adam opened Gathered

Glassblowing Studio in downtown Toledo.

Helen Grubb grew up in Sylvania. She attended the Hebrew Academy and B’nai Israel

Religious School where she had her Bat Mitzvah. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the

University of Toledo with a focus in Printmaking and Drawing. She maintains a studio at Gathered

Glassblowing Studio and is involved in the local art community.

CBI dedicates beautiful new artwork!
