The night of November 6is one which we will all

remember for a long time. On thatnight our congregation came togetherto welcome and install Rabbi Greene asthe spiritual leader of CKI.

The speeches were great, the guestswere terrific, and the food was delicious. However, it was Rabbi Kensky’s remarkswhich intrigued me. He quoted RabbiJoshua Ben Proctor in Pirke Avot, “Makefor yourself a rabbi.” Referring to thisquote, Rabbi Kensky suggested that WEmake our own rabbis. It isn’t aseminary, a trip to Israel, or campexperience which makes a rabbi, butrather, the congregation which makes arabbi by the way that we respond to herteachings. It is the way we grow withthe spirit which she brings. “Ideally weeach contribute to each other’sgrowth.” At an installation, we make acommitment to help make a rabbi.

Rabbi Kensky was conveying to us thegreat opportunity which we haveahead. He was suggesting that RabbiGreene was not the only one who madea commitment. We, as a congregation, also made a commitment: to worktogether and to grow together. However, it is hard to grow if we don’t

take advantage of what she has to offer.Come to a program, assist a committee, participate in a service, or join a studygroup. Or perhaps, your commitmentwill begin with a phone call or a cup ofcoffee. We have before us a wide rangeof opportunities.

May we all continue the warmth, andthe spirit that we experienced on thatwonderful evening.

Rabbi’s Message

Greetings everybody, andHappy Hanukkah. I’m

writing this in my new office basking inthe warm glow of my installation. Whata moving night. My family and I thankyou from the bottom of our hearts. As Isaid that night, it is my fervent prayerthat my deeds reflect God’s glory, mythoughts lead to God’s service, and thatI never debase God’s teaching ormisrepresent it to others. Howappropriate that our publicacknowledgment of our partnershipoccur right before Hanukkah. After all,Hanukkah is all about our efforts tomaintain our ability and right topractice our faith and serve God intruth.

Just like our ancestors before us, westand at the brink, poised to extend theflame. We are off to a great start. Ourprograms are going strong. We havethree new adventures on the horizon. The CKI choir is back! (First rehearsals,Sunday December 5 at 11:00.), musicand cultural programming is increasing,(next committee meeting, November21, 9:30.) Thanks to Sarah Frisch’sgenerous gift, and the seniors club, the“CKI Youngsters” have agreed to meetthe second Tuesday of every month at12:00 for lunch. Further informationmay be found throughout this issue.

A special favorite of mine, however, isour Chai Five program. In the name ofour sages, the Torah is a “Tree of life

(Chai) to those who cling to her.” Thus,my offer and challenge to you is for youto ask me to give you “five.” Pleaseconsider committing to five minutes aweek of learning. So far we have peoplelearning Hebrew, synagogue skills, theBible, and just plain asking of questions.“Try it, you’ll like it.”

Hanukkah is about the ability topractice as a Jew. Come and exercisethat right.

Kol tuv,

Rabbi Marcy Greene

Everyday we dog paddleour way through a

myriad of numbers and letters. Justthink of all that stuff lodging in thecrevices of our brain – address numbers, phone numbers, social security number, driver’s license number, pin numbers, IDnumbers….ad nauseum. This is “thejargon of our lives.” Amazing how werecall it all with just a moment’s blink.

The same is true in our business/professional lives. The letters andnumbers of the trade swarm all aroundus. So along with our everyday jargon,we add the career ones to our brains, palm pilots, pieces of paper – wherever.Nor is education exempt from gettingstuck in the jargon goo. Years ago Iwrote a poem titled “Educationeeze IfYou Pleeze” in which I mustered all theeducational jargon I could. Mycollection included “B.D., L.D., I.E.P. —T.P., A.P., and I.C.E. — I.H.S.A., T.A.G. —I.R., D.E., C.E.E.B.” — etc. I labeled this awicked Campbell’s Alphabet Soup andconcluded: “If these letters make soupand are used by the herds / We justmight end up really eating our words!”

Well, the same is true for Jewisheducation. Why should we be left out?I have found myself deluged with otherletters – those of organizations that Ihave needed to add to “the jargon ofmy life.” I know many of you haveheard us bandy these about, so Ithought I’d at least tell you what themore important ones stand for.

• BJE – The Board of Jewish Education

• JEA – Jewish Educators Assembly

• DSI – Dawn R. Schuman Institute ofCFJE

• CFJE – Community Foundation ofJewish Education

• CAJE – Coalition for the Advancementof Jewish Education

• MJLC –Marshall Jewish LearningCenter

And I love going to some of theirmeetings. That’s strange, I know, because most of us equate meetingswith the “ok – I’m getting paid for this –

so I’ll sit here” attitude. But I havealways found when educators gather toshare thoughts, problems, and creativeideas, I am exhilarated and can’t wait toreturn to the school to adopt and adaptsome of the really good ideas and putthem into action.

These organizations are truly a blessing, because they are completelycommitted to Jewish survival throughour children. They devote hours, days, months to bringing together Jewishteachers, principals, and students inorder to keep Judaism alive. Whether itbe helping facilitate the Walk WithIsrael, sending kids to Israel on studyand work programs, designingexperiences to be creative in writingand art, offering cultural experiences forgroups, sending experts in areas likehandling special needs children, providing library services offeringbooks, videos, and other works toJewish schools, or giving help andattention to individual teachers whowant to create projects, lessons andpresentations, these organizations walkmore than that extra mile to make ithappen! We applaud and thank them. They are vital to the existence of Jewisheducation!

Thanks for listening.

USY and Kadima News

Last month was a busy one for ouryouth groups. Many of our USYers

participated in CHUSYFEST, the fallconvention for high school youthgroups in our region. The theme of theweekend was,“Get Up, Stand Up” andover 200 USYers were in attendance.Study groups focused on a variety ofserious topics, including: separation ofchurch and state; gun control; gaymarriage; abortion; and embryonic stemcell research. On Sunday, a memorialprogram was held commemorating theninth anniversary of the death of YizhakRabin. Shabbat services werecompletely run by the students. Lestyou think there was no time for fun –Saturday night from 10pm-12:30am theentire group went to an indoorwaterpark. And earlier Saturdayafternoon, the much-anticipated annualfootball game between the Juniors andthe Seniors resulted in a tied score of28-28 (with our own Cory Jacoby andMichael Rosenfeld scoringtouchdowns!)

November also saw the annual TurkeyDance at Beth El in Highland Park, as

well as a USY board meeting to planfuture programs (including thepostponed lock-in at Ha-Reffet, to beheld later in the year).

Our Kadimaniks, under the direction ofEt Schillmoeller, had lots of fun at aSaturday evening program at CKI wherethey held a Havdalah service, thenplayed board games, ate snacks, andenjoyed each other’s company.

This month brings us the InternationalUSY Convention in Chicago. Several ofour members will be in attendance, andwe can't wait to hear their reports.

If you’d like to see photos and getupdates as the convention unfolds, check the website www.chusy.org daily.Several of our parents have also signedup to volunteer at this wonderful event, where over 1,000 Jewish students fromacross the US and Canada will gather topray, study, elect a new slate of officers, perform mitzvot, and play!

Looking ahead to next month, January28-30 is the CHUSY 8th gradeShabbaton.

Watch for info.

As you already know from previousarticles, I love Hanukkah! And my wishis always the same: This year, gobeyond the wrapping paper andribbon. Think about the lights andabout the humble but heartfelt giftsAnne Frank gave everyone in her hidingplace, and you will discover thatHanukkah is about how small thingscan make a profound difference.

And let the candles be a beacon. Leteach new candle be a gift for your soul.I read somewhere that we shouldpromise ourselves to do somethingsubtle yet awesome for each candle –something we might never have donebefore…light Shabbat candles onFriday evening, say a blessing before weeat, take a walk in the woods, come toan event in synagogue, visit a nursinghome, write in a journal.

What a joyous time to reflect on oursynagogue family and our amazingschool! What a great time to recognizethat the many organizations and theirjargon enrich our lives and the lives ofour children through Jewish educationand the hope of continuity. It’s all aspiritual connection!

In the jargon of Hanukkah – I wisheveryone the joys, hopes andbrightness of the menorah lights!

Shalom Academy News

Shalom Academy is accepting new studentsfor the January term. Sometimes children aren’t ready for preschool in

September, but are ready by January. Please help us make connections to familieswho would like not only a quality preschool, but also a Jewish one. It’s not too soonto look ahead to the 2005-2006 school year. I have started talking with parentsalready!

Check us out! Last month we went to Tri County State Park and learned aboutCamouflaged Critters, searched for some in the field, and made our own. Thestudents really liked Ranger Nikki, who was also camouflaged! During November westudied Thanksgiving, nature, Autumn, and the color brown. Maybe you noticed theleaf prints the students did with Miss Astrug.

After Thanksgiving, Shalom Academy started learning about Hanukkah, family, andthe color blue. See what we are doing by checking out the bulletin board in thehallway outside the Shalom Academy classroom.

Thank you to Alvin and Norma Hass for their very generous donation to buypreschool books for the classroom. Miss Astrug and I are excited about theopportunity to provide more quality books to our students!

Having been the recipient of a bloodtransfusion this past summer, I

A very big thank you to Paul forincreasing the blood flow byorganizing our second annual CKIBlood Drive with Heartland BloodCenter on Sunday, November 7th.And thank you to all the people whohelped and donated.

Twenty-nine people registered, andHeartland was able to collect 17 pints of blood. (And absolutely no onepassed out!)

Heartland nurses and technicians werevery appreciative and gracious.

Ha Kol InformationA Trip to a New Musical in SkokieThere is a new musical making its Chicago premiere at the NorthlightTheatre in Skokie this December. “The Immigrant” is a touching andtrue story set to the bittersweet sound of klezmer music. This upliftingmusical follows a young man as he flees the pogroms of Czarist Russiain 1909, only to end up pushing a banana cart in the tiny Baptistcommunity of Hamilton, Texas. Given shelter by a childless oldercouple, he sends for his wife, raises a family and makes the unfamiliartown his home. The Immigrant is a tale of parents and children, newcomers and natives, Christians and Jews, and the realization of thedreams that bind us together.

Featuring Chicago favorite actress Hollis Resnick and directed byRandal Myler, the show will be presented December 8, 2004 toJanuary 9, 2005. We are going to try to secure tickets for a matinee(first choice) sometime during school’s winter recess in December.

If you are interested in being a part of the group (for which we will geta group discount), please contact me (Ron Raben) by December 5th(before the 5th would be great) so I have some idea of how many areinterested and I can reserve a date if tickets are still available.

You can reach me at synagogue or at home (630-837-6562). Hope youcan join us.

Yahrtzeiten

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrtzeiten will be commemoratedduring the coming weeks, and those whose names will be read in the synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services during the month of December. It is appropriate that members of their families are present when these names are read.

There are two dates listed above on our yahrtzeit list. The first is the day of the service at which the namewill be read. The second is the actual date of the yahrtzeit and memorial candles should be lit on thepreceding evening. An asterisk after the name indicates a plaque is affixed to the Memorial Tablet.
