Now Shop AMAZON ThroughCKI Website ! !
CKI is proud to announce a new way to shop ---that can benefit CKI!
As you no doubt know, Amazon.com is one of the
largest and most successful internet retailers today.
Books, Cds, electronics, jewelry, clothing, you name it,
are all available at Amazon.com, and usually at very,
very competitive prices. Well, now you can do your
Amazon.com shopping through the CKI website!!
CKI is now a member of the Amazon.com Associate
Program. What this means is that if you simply access
Amazon.com through the
link on the CKI website
(www.ckielgin.org), CKI will
earn a percentage of any
sales made through that particular shopping trip.
There are a few exceptions, such as purchases
through some third-party sites, but as long as you
use the “Easy Link,” you'll help support programming
here at CKI.
Although we certainly encourage membership here,
one does not need to be a CKI member to partici-
pate in this program, so be sure to tell all your family
and friends to shop Amazon The CKI Way. So next
time you’re on the computer, why not bookmark
www.ckielgin.org? Then you'll be all set whenever
the urge to shop hits. Think of it as one small click for
you, but one giant click to help CKI!

This summer while attending the Bi-Annual Convention of the
Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs(FJMC), there was one word that I kepthearing, particularly right before doingthe Birchat Ha’Mazon after meals. Thatword was “ruach.” We were encouragedafter every meal to sing with plenty of“ruach”; in fact the gentleman leadingeveryone in the prayer referred to him-self as “Captain Ruach.” I have to con-fess that I did not know the literalmeaning of this word but inferred thatit probably had something to do withspirit.
Being the curious person that I am IGoogled the word and, sure enough, found a web site which provided thisexplanation:
“In Hebrew Kabbalah, one of the threeparts of the Human soul. Ruach meansspirit, and refers to the emotional self.”
However, I didn’t need a dry, sterile definition on a web site to make meunderstand the meaning of ruach.

Ha Kol Information
Greetings everyone,
Hope you all had a restfuland peaceful summer. Now that LaborDay is upon us, it is time to get back ingear and prepare for the High Holidays. As this goes to press, we are in the mid-dle of the seven Haftorot of consola-tion. These seven prophetic readingsfollow Tisha B’Av, the fast day on whichwe commemorate our national calami-ties. When the seven haftorot are com-pleted, we have arrived at RoshHaShannah. I have long been fascinat-ed by this juxtaposition of seven weeksof consolation that follow with theHoliday that signifies our faith andbelief in creation.
Rabbi’s Message
Truly, we prove that it is “always darkestbefore the dawn.” With that in mind, letme share with you some of the excitingthings in the works to help make thisholiday season spiritually uplifting.First of all, I am delighted to report thatCantor Jack Falk and I have been work-ing diligently this summer to create theservices. He has been a joy to workwith, and I for one am looking forwardto having a partner and a mensch onthe Bimah.
Also, on the Bimah this year will be ourchoir. There is still time to join, so pleaseconsider adding your voice to ourprayer celebration. There are also someTorah reading spots open. If you would
like to do an aliyah please let me know.Personally, I think that High Holidaynusach is the most beautiful and theportions are short. I will have tapes andprivate tutoring available. Go aheadand challenge yourself.
In conclusion, may the year 5766 be oneof peace, healing and joy, and may wegrow spiritually.
Kol tuv,
Rabbi Greene
A Message from Our President
Hearing all those guys at the conventionduring Kabbalat Shabbat or Saturdaymorning services was the perfect objectlesson. But it wasn’t just at servicesthat this feeling came through; listeningto fellow Men’s Club reps talking aboutthe programs in their shuls made merealize that ruach is more than aboutchanting prayers; it’s what we bring toour own Jewish community.
Inevitably I thought about the spirit, theruach, that exists here at CKI; theSaturday Shabbat services studying anddiscussing the weekly parsha,Fridaynight service with musical accompani-ment, Sunday morning kibitzing overcoffee and bagels, our members pitch-ing in for the annual rummage sale, USYkids going to camp, carrying the bannerfor CKI at the Annual Walk for Israel; inshort all those things that perhapsmany of us take for granted but defineus as a Jewish community.
Unfortunately, I was out of town whenyou elected me president so I did nothave the opportunity to address you all
at the congregational meeting (somemight suggest that wasn’t such a badoutcome). What I wanted to tell youthen – and now – is that as your newpresident, my commitment to you is topreserve and grow our most valuableasset – the ruach that exists here in oursynagogue.

Rooms have some peculiarphenomena about them –
especially when they are empty. In ourhome, for example, even though wehave long since converted the boys’rooms to the proverbial “computerroom” and “guest bedroom,” the roomsare still known as “Joshua’s room” and“Marc’s room.” They are still here withus.
And the other room phenomenon iswhen a room is empty, it stillholds the history of whathappened and who “lived” init. Isn’t that true? I remem-ber when the drama seasonwas over in school and thesets were struck and stashedand the stage was clear, Iused to sit in the empty the-ater house, and if I was quietenough, I could hear thevoices – those voices thatlived there from year to year. How amazing – to sit andhear the voices from “A Manfor All Seasons”,“Teahouse ofthe August Moon”,“Inherit the Wind”,“Diary of Anne Frank”,“Blithe Spirit”,“TheCrucible”,“Arsenic and Old Lace”,“TheMiracle Worker” and more – and to hearthe sounds of the voices singing from“Hello, Dolly”,“Fiddler on the Roof”,“Camelot”,“The King and I”,“My FairLady” and on and on. Like spirits, thevoices live in the room and becomepart of its legacy and life.
Just like at CKI – when it’s empty. Istand in each classroom and can stillhear the voices of the children and theteachers laughing, singing, readingHebrew and discussing all kinds ofthings about Judaism and just life in
general. I can still feel that life and ener-gy! And then I realize, we are going todo that again this year! We are going tohave different children in each room, but the energy will be there. The lifewill be there. And the spirit of the voi-ces will linger when the rooms areagain empty.
In Torah School, we are going to do twothings this year to help us give theserooms a spirit First, we are designating
this “The Year of Kindnesses.” Just as welearned last year that doing mitzvot canhelp make a difference, we are sayingthis year that performing random actsof kindness can make a difference!
I happened to run across a calendardeveloped by Debbie Herman andDaniel Rothner called “A Kindness ADay.” In it, they say,“The values ofchesed (kindness), tzedakah (charity),and tikkun olam (social justice) lie atthe core of Jewish tradition and prac-tice…These values are meant to guidethe Jewish people in their daily pursuits, yet they are often lost in the shuffle ofour busy modern lives.” With that in
mind, I decided to change the concept abit and bring “A Kindness A Week” toTorah School. I will post them eachweek on the social hall wall. Each kind-ness has a goal to reach for the weekand a Jewish text upon which to reflect. All are very personal and will help eachand every one of us understand thepower of performing acts of lovingkindness.
Second, we are going to focus on aha-vat ziyyon – “love for the land ofIsrael.” Each month, teachers will pres-ent some facet of Israel to the children(in an age-appropriate way) from howkids live in Israel to major cities to sitesto symbols and to emblems of the land.We will also participate in a couple ofall-school activities highlighting Israel.
So we have a couple of mutual goalsthis year. First, let’s make sure that inthe routine of our busy days we remem-ber to be kind in some way to someone. And that we teach our children thevalue of doing that! Second, let’s fillthese Torah School rooms with the feel-ings and sounds of kindnesses and alove of Eretz Yisrael that will linger herelong after the rooms are empty.

YOM KIPPUR FASHION TIPThe proper footwear is anything butleather for Yom Kippur. Leather isconsidered a physical luxury, and onYom Kippur the focus is on the spiritual, not the physical. Wearing white is quiteacceptable for Yom Kippur. It remindsus of the purity we seek to attain, of theangels we are a little less than inCreation, and of our deceased lovedones who are buried in a simple whitelinen garment.

The Selichot are pentitential prayersthat are recited on many occasions during and before the High Holidays.Midnight was one of the times selectedfor the recitation. According to Psalm119:62- “At midnight I will rise to givethanks unto Thee.”
The midnight Selichot service is gener-ally held on the Saturday night preced-ing Rosh HaShanah unless RoshHaShanah falls on Monday or Tuesdayfollowing the Saturday night. In thatcase, this year for example the Selichotservice is held one week earlier onSaturday night September 24.

The Month of ElulThe month prior to the High Holidays
The month of Elul is the sixth month ofthe year if we start counting fromNisan, called in the Chumash the “firstmonth”.
Counting from Tishrei the month ofRosh HaShanah, Elul is the twelfth andlast month of the year.
Elul is the month set aside for preparingourselves for the upcoming HighHolidays: Rosh HaShanah and YomKippur. This is a month for Repentanceand the upcoming New Year. There areno actual holidays during the month ofElul.
Jews have a custom of saying peniten-tial prayers starting with the beginningof the month of Elul and continuinguntil Yom Kippur. The shofar is alsoblasted every day at morning servicesto remind us that the most awesomeholidays in the Jewish calendar areapproaching.
The shofar is blown during the monthof Elul because it was a Temple ritual. This tradition began in the Middle Ages.Moses climbed to the top of Mount

The Crisis Center is EXTREMELY LOW

Though the shelter typically provides
formula for shelter residents and daily

Rousing applause to all the volunteers
who got in touch in advance of our
delivery dates in July! Not only were
the dates easily filled, but there were
also “extras” waiting in the wings. Many
thanks to the Goldsteins, the Winners,
Sue Johnson and Barb Razowsky,
Sherry Weisman and Barb Maring, and
Saul Mariasis, my partner.
Our next route is scheduled for
October 17-21. I look forward to hear-

Yahrtzeiten
We recall with loving memory those whose yahrtzeiten will be commemoratedduring the coming weeks, and those whose names will be read in the synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbat services during the month of September. It is appropriate that members of their families are present when these names are read.
There are two dates listed above on our yahrtzeit list. The first isthe day of the service at which the name will be read. The second is the actual date of the yahrtzeit and memorialcandles should be lit on the preceding evening. An asteriskafter the name indicates a plaque is affixed to the Memorial Tablet.
