Hillel said, “In a place wherethere are no mensches, striveto be one.” (Pirke Avot 2:6)That’s part of what living in acommunity is about. Buthow do we do that?

Some of those basic principles come out of thisreading from the Talmud:

These are the obligations without measure, whose reward too, is without measure:To honor father and mother,To perform acts of love and kindness,To attend the house of study daily,To welcome the stranger,To visit the sick,To rejoice with the bride and groom,To console the bereaved,To pray with sincerity,To make peace where there is strife,And the study of Torah is equal to them all, because it leads to them all.

The plaintive sounds of El MolehRachamin, “The CommittalPrayer,” from Saul Mariasis’ funeral,

still haunt the sanctuary as I write this. Listeningto the choir begin to chant one of the HighHoliday Kaddish, I know we are moving intosacred time as the preparation for the HighHolidays intensifies.

This coming new year, our year long study topicwill be Brit—Covenant—Living in a HolyCommunity. A covenant is a contract, a pact.Historically, kings and suzerains “cut” covenantswith their subjects and vassals. We have foundarchaeological evidence of such covenants. Covenants usually spell out the terms of howwe are to act. This will be a year dedicated toexploring our most sacred principles. Month bymonth, we will study a different concept thatapplies to us today living in a holy community,a kehlila kedosha.

My colleague, Rabbi Evan Moffic, calls this, “TheHappiness Prayer.” He wrote a book calledexactly that, describing each part. While it is nota prayer per se, the rabbis included it in everymorning service. Our siddur, Sim Shalom, has it.Gates of Prayer and Mishkan Tefila has it. Ourstudents will be looking at the book, A Kid’sMensch Handbook: Step by Step Guide to aLifetime of Jewish Values.

This year has been hard on our congregation.People who have moved away. People whohave died. We will miss them. I will miss them.Shabbat morning doesn’t quite feel the same. But this past couple of weeks have taught methat we truly are a kehila kedosha, a holycommunity. We did exactly what the Torahcommands, we buried the dead and comfortedthe bereaved. We opened our doors andwelcomed everyone, to the synagogue for afuneral service, then to two different homes forshiva minyans. We brought food, madedonations, offered rides. We opened thebuilding and locked up the building. Weshoveled and schlepped. And many of youreached out to me to make sure I was OK, too. Those gestures, big and small, are also part ofbeing in a kehila kedosha, because we are all inthis together.

As I begin my seventh year as your rabbi, yourspiritual leader, I am incredibly proud of thiscommunity. Because we are all in this together.

I am hoping you are each enjoying the last halfof summer. It always saddens me a little whenthe back-to-school commercials begin. There isstill time for a beautiful sunset, a s’more, a bikeride, a hike, and then an ice cream cone!

A couple of upcoming events to be aware of:

National Night Out is August 7.We will host ablock party for our neighbors, grill some hotdogs, and as the authors of the cookbookJerusalem suggest, bring people together overhummus. Perhaps world peace can start withhummus. Bring your friends. This is CKI’s OpenHouse. So join us from 5:00-7:00 PM, afterwhich there is a Board meeting and choirrehearsal.

People enjoyed our Shabbat afternoon study ofthe Book of Ruth. Beginning on August 11,which is also Rosh Chodesh Elul, we will bestudying the Book of Jonah in order to preparefor the High Holidays.

Another way to prepare for the High Holidays is with Selichot, the service on the Saturdaynight before. This year, that service will be onSept. 1 at 7:30 PM. We will begin with someMexican appetizers and then see the movie“Coco” and talk about Yizkor and how weremember our dead.

Aiden Rockwood

will be called to the

Torah as a Bar

Mitzvah on

September 1, 2018.

Aiden will be an 8th

grade student at

Thompson Middle

School in St. Charles.

He enjoys playing a

variety of different sports such as basketball,

baseball, tennis, and golf. At school, Aiden likes

his math class the most. And, he enjoys

spending time with his friends and family.

Sharing this special occasion with Aiden are his

proud parents David and Joelle Rockwood, and

his brother Ryan.

Also sharing this wonderful day with Aiden are

his paternal grandparents from Denver,

Colorado, Betty and Bill Rockwood, and his

maternal grandparents from Ottawa, Canada,

Bernard and Dora Lipski. Also, Aiden is excited

to share this day with his aunts, uncles, cousins,

and friends who made the trip to Illinois, along

with his Chicagoland friends who have come to

celebrate with him.

Throughout his Jewish education, Aiden has

learned about the Jewish traditions and

customs that are unique to our religion—not to

mention, he enjoyed learning a new language!

He also gained an appreciation of the

importance of giving back to the community in

which you live, realizing that giving to those in

need is even more gratifying than receiving

something yourself.

Bar MitzvahR’FUAH SH’LEIMAH – GET WELL

May G-d have mercy upon you and all otherswho are ill among the people Israel.

A multidisciplinary team at HadassahHospital Ein Kerem recently employedan innovative technology to treatcancer metastases near the spinalcord--a first for Israel.

The new surgical radio-spinaltreatment, out in a specializedradiation treatment unit in Hadassah’soncology department, is performedwith the help of state-of-the-art Spine SRSsoftware, designed by Germany’s Brainlab forthe precise treatment of cancer metastasesnear the spinal cord. It enables the physician tomatch MRI and CAT scan images within anaccuracy of less than one millimeter.

“This level of accuracy is a revolution in itself, since the accepted standard up to now hasbeen three millimeters in the cervical spine andsix in the lumbar spine,” relates Dr. AmichayMeirovitz, who led the procedure and is head ofthe Focused and Stereotactic Radiotherapy

Unit at Hadassah. “This increasesaccuracy by more than three to fourtimes relative to previoustechniques,” he says.

Dr. Meirovitz reports that Spine SRSwas received at Hadassahimmediately after its launch inGermany, and that “Hadassah is theonly hospital in the Middle East to

use this software in a clinical setting." Inaddition, Hadassah’s patients are among thefirst in the world to be treated with this newtechnology.

Thanks to the precision of this spinal radiationtreatment, physicians can give a single dose ofhigher level radiation that is more effective intreating the disease, with low risk of harmingnearby vital organs, such as the spinal cord andkidneys. The procedure, done in cooperationwith Hadassah’s departments of neurosurgeryand imaging, also has another advantage,

First in Israel: Hadassah Uses Innovative Technology to Treat Cancer in Spine

according to Dr. Meirovitz. It enables thephysician to avoid surgical procedures thatcould endanger the patient or impair thepatient’s quality of life. The procedure alsoenables the patient to recover in a short periodof time, with a minimum stay in the hospital.

This new technology, Dr. Meirovitz reports, issuitable for patients with isolated spinalmetastases, as opposed to patients withmultiple metastases. The latter are best suitedfor other therapeutic options. In some cases, when the tumor is too close to the spinal cord,a preliminary surgery is needed in order todistance the tumor from the spinal cord, andonly then this innovative treatment can beused.

Yahrzeits

We recall with loving memory those whose yahrzeits are commemorated during the coming weeks, and those whose names are read in the Synagogue at Friday evening and Saturday morning Shabbatservices during the month of August. It is appropriate for members of their families to be present when these names are read.

On Yom Kippur, we remember our dear departed in prayer, and pledge charitableofferings in their honor.

It has been the tradition in our Congregation to publish a Memorial Booklet which isdistributed on Yom Kippur at the time of the Yizkor Service. In this booklet, we list the namesof our departed loved ones as a tribute to their memory.

We hope that you will take this opportunity to memorialize your loved ones by includingtheir names in the Memorial Booklet.

All members should have received (or will shortly) either a blank form or a form listing yournames from last year. Please return the form to CKI as soon as possible, but NO LATER THANTHURSDAY, AUGUST 23. Your enclosed offering, which will be much needed help to maintainthe Synagogue and Religious School, is greatly appreciated. If you need a form or have anyquestions, please call Karen Bender at 847-651-3209 or email [email protected]

Dear family and friends,

I will be celebrating my Bar Mitzvah on September 1, 2018. Part of that

responsibility is to also give back to your community. This is called “tzedakah”.

I am raising money for an organization called Living Well Cancer Resource

Center in Geneva, Illinois. Living Well is a cancer support center that provides cancer

patients with free services such as counseling services, education, both patient and

family support, exercise, nutrition and legal services.

I chose this project because almost a year ago my mom was diagnosed with a

blood cancer called Multiple Myeloma. This really hit me hard. My mom has used

various Living Well services and I want to help other cancer patients, like my mom,

continue to have a place to go to help them feel more comfortable and informed during

their treatment and recovery.

If you would like to help me donate to this valuable cause, please visit:

https://www.gofundme.com/AidenDonationProject-LivingWell . All donations are

appreciated and will be used to make a difference in another cancer patient’s life. I will

be turning over the donations raised on September 8, 2018.

Thanks for your support. For more information about the Living Well Cancer

Resource Center go to: https://livingwellcrc.org
