You bring a dessert to share.Kids and adults of all agesare welcome.
When you stop to thinkabout it, both Chanukah andThanksgiving celebrate amiracle. The miracle of sur-vival. The Maccabees wonthe war, the oil lasted foreight days and the Puritanssurvived a whole winter andhad food for the next winter.
Both the Israelites and thePuritans were being persecuted for their reli-gious beliefs. In both cases they survived. Thatis indeed a miracle—one we can gratefullycelebrate together. Hooray.
Chanukah has always intrigued me. The warwas fought by a band of zealots who wantedto preserve Judaism. It was a battle againstassimilation and yet it has become the mostassimilated of Jewish holidays, usuallybecause of its proximity to Christmas. TheDecember Dilemma has never worried memuch. Celebrating a little Christmas does notmake someone less Jewish. I do worry aboutthe guilt that we put on interfaith families.Family, respect, hospitality are all core valuesof Judaism. Celebrating is a core value ofJudaism. And without the Maccabees therewould be no Christmas at all.
In that vein, there are two other opportunitiesto explore our diversity this month. OnNovember 3, after Torah School and JudaismRocks, the Coalition of Elgin Religious Leaders, together with the City of Elgin, U46 SchoolDistrict, the Community Crisis Center, theRenz Center and the Ecker Center will host aday of learning, “Safe City – Peaceful City,”from 2:00-5:00 PM at Judson University. Then,on November 24, at 4:00 PM, we will partici-pate in the Community InterfaithThanksgiving Service. This year’s service willbe at Highland Avenue Church of theBrethren and will focus on peace, healing and hope.

Thanksgivukkah? A new Jewishholiday? Not really. Giving thanksis about as Jewish as it gets.
Thanksgiving as celebrated by the Puritans wasan attempt to celebrate Sukkot, the harvest fes-tival. William Bradford, first governor of Plimoth Plantation learned Hebrew so hecould speak to G-d in the language in whichthe world was created. Chanukah is a celebra-tion of dedication and rededication—and achance also to give thanks. Having them comeas part of the same weekend once every 7000years, priceless.
So how to celebrate? Latkes instead of mashedpotatoes? Maybe sweet potato latkes withcranberry sauce instead of applesauce?Hollowed out pumpkin chanukiot? Orange andbrown, instead of blue and silver? There mustbe something special for this unique occur-rence. Buzzfeed suggested this menu:http://www.buzzfeed.com/christinebyrne/thanksgivukkah.
My colleague, Rabbi David Paskin wrote a newballad. Try this blend: http://www.david-paskin.com/thanksgivukkah.html.
Our service on Friday night, November 29, willbe a special opportunity to celebrateThanksgivukkah. Come join us for festivesinging of both holidays—an opportunity toshare what we are thankful for beyond foot-ball, turkey, and discounts at the malls. In par-ticular, we welcome our out-of-town guestsand our young adults back home. Home to CKIwith a special oneg Shabbat and a chance toreconnect with our CKI family. Send me youryoung adult email or Facebook address and Iwill be sure they get their own invitation to thisspecial event and a chance to just hang outwith friends.
On Sunday afternoon, December 1, join theKleins from 2:00-5:00 PM at our new home forlatkes and a Chanukah dessert buffet. Our newaddress is 15 Hilltop Lane, South Elgin, IL(http://goo.gl/maps/fNwn3). The Kleins will pro-vide the latkes and drinks, gelt and dreidels.

There is another miracle of survival. This monthwe remember Kristallnacht. It has been 75years since the Night of Broken Glass. How dowe go from shattered glass and shattered livesto putting the pieces back together? How dowe find meaning and the courage to go on?Part of it is through music. Join us for a specialKabbalat Shabbat service with instrumental, meditative music on November 8. Then onNovember 9, join us as we attend a specialcommemoration event in Skokie. If you havenames of loved ones who perished during theHolocaust that you want read during ourKabbalat Shabbat service, please let me know.
Part of how we survived for all these years isbecause we are the People of the Book.November is National Jewish Book Month. InTorah School and Hebrew School we will beencouraging the kids to read a Jewish bookand tell me about it. For each book they read, they will get a leaf to put on our “Eitz Chayyim,Tree of Life” outside my office. Watch it grow! Ifyou have not signed up your children toreceive PJ Library Books through the JewishUnited Fund/Jewish Federation ofMetropolitan Chicago (JUF), I urge you to doso. Each month, the Federation, with fundsfrom the grant from the Harold GreenspoonFoundation, will send your young readers andpre-readers a book or CD for free. Families withchildren from 6 months to 8 years old are eligi-ble. Grandparents can also sign up a child(http://www.juf.org/pjlibrary).What a greatway to build their own Jewish libraries andhave a chance to snuggle with a good book aspart of their bedtime rituals. Reading is not justfor kids. What Jewish book will you read thismonth?

During yuntif, I picked up a book that had beenon my reading wish list for several years. Just intime. On November 15, to tie in with the 75thanniversary of Kristallnacht, The Book Thief willbe released as a movie in theaters. A New YorkTimes #1 bestseller a few years ago, it is ahaunting and poignant tale of Germany toldthrough the eyes of the angel of death andone of his soon-to-be victims, a young girl

What do the following have in common?
• Visiting the sick• Balancing the books• Making a donation• Helping with a funeral• Planting a garden• Reaching out to youth• Making tuna salad• Making a minyan (ten adults necessary
to say certain prayers)• Washing a window• Answering a phone• Writing a memorial book• Leading a prayer service• Taking bids• Talking to a new member• Organizing holiday events• Feeding the hungry• Maintaining a website• Publishing this newsletter• Welcoming a new family• Maintaining a Facebook page• Making a school• Spreading rock salt• Writing By-Laws• Planning an event• Raising funds• Buying the booze
That’s right! They are all things that happenaround CKI. They are the things that people do;a couple for pay and the rest as volunteers. They don’t do it for thanks, but the fact is thateach of these people is giving something ofthemselves for the benefit of all of us. I am sure
President’s Message
we are grateful for their actions. Without themCKI wouldn’t exist, but as G. B. Stern stated,“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is likewrapping a present and not giving it.”
What does everyone like to hear? “Thank you.”To quote Alice Walker, “Thank you is the bestprayer anyone can say. I say that one a lot.”
We have so many great people around herewho do so much, and who have done it for solong that they may just blend into the back-ground of the synagogue’s life. Just like a longmarried couple that begins to take each otherfor granted, sometimes we at CKI take eachother for granted. I can tell you—as a therapistwho does marriage counseling—forgetting tobe polite in any relationship is corrosive. Itslowly eats away at the fabric of things. And asAlfred Painter said, “Saying thank you is morethan good manners. It is good spirituality.”
Lately, we’ve been talking in various settingsabout the importance of the words, “ThankYou.” We’ve discussed promoting a tone ofgratitude one to another. As G. K. Chestertonwrote, “I would maintain that thanks are thehighest form of thought, and that gratitude ishappiness doubled by wonder. “
So please, any time you derive any benefit froman action of another person here at CKI, or infact, anywhere, remember what Shakespearesaid, “I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks.”
Finally, I’d like to say to all of those in the CKIcommunity who do so much—on behalf of allof us—Thank you!

Liesel, whose foster family is hiding a Jew, Max.It is marvelous writing. Who knew that eachdeath has a different color? That you can tastethe sound of accordion music or champagne? That in the eyes of a young girl, the world canseem to continue as “normal,” innocent even asyou learn to read, experience your first love,(while playing soccer and stealing books), foodis being rationed, and you have a secret in yourbasement who you have to leave behind ifthere is an air raid? That Verzeihung, forgive-
ness, according to the Duden Dictionary ofMeanings, one of Liesel’s stolen books, is “Tostop feeling anger, animosity, or resentment.”USA Today said that this book “Deserves aplace on the same shelf with the Diary of aYoung Girl, by Anne Frank.” The WashingtonPost called it “Absorbing and searing.” It is abook I will not soon forget and I will be mostcurious to see how they have turned this bookinto a movie.

CKI Presents Kristallnacht 75 Programming: Reflecting on Kristallnacht 75 Years Later
This year Jews around the world will commemorate the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht,
the Night of Broken Glass. On November 9, 1938, a series of coordinated, violent attacks
against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and Austria left streets covered in broken glass
from the windows of Jewish stores, homes, buildings and synagogues. This night represents
the essential turning point in Nazi persecution of Jews through the Holocaust,
culminating in the attempt to annihilate the European Jews.
Please join us as we commemorate Kristallnacht and honor the memory of those who perished and of those who suffered. Let us remember the past so that we can work together
to make the present and the future a better place.

We hope that a large contingency from CKI will support this extraordinary event.
In an effort to meet CKI’s vision of providingmeaningful observance, together with
respecting diversity and insuring a welcomingenvironment for all, CKI’s Ritual Committee hasconducted a very careful review of our policyon the wearing of head coverings and tallitot.
The review was undertaken at the request of acongregant. Prior to the August meeting,Committee members were charged with con-ducting their own research into the issue, andall met their responsibility in that regard. Alsoproviding valuable guidance was a detailedpaper on the topic prepared by Rabbi FrischKlein and upcoming Bat Mitzvah Katie Irelan.
Current policy at Congregation Kneseth Israelhas been: “All men are required to wear headcoverings; women are requested to wear headcoverings. Everyone is required to wear headcoverings while on the bimah.” There does notappear to be an express policy requiring thewearing of tallit, but the custom here has beenthat Jewish men are encouraged to wear a tal-lit during daytime services (and at Kol Nidre),and Jewish women called to the bimah arewelcome to do so. These policies are applicableto everyone above Bar Mitzvah age, and thehead covering policy applies also to TorahSchool students.
The Committee’s discussions at its August andOctober meetings were open, considered, and
ed and requested to wear head coverings.”
The Committee hopes that everyone willunderstand and respect our policy and willhelp our guests do so as well. If people areinterested in reading the full teshuva respon-sum prepared by Rabbi Frisch Klein, it is avail-able on the CKI website.(http://www.ckielgin.org/uploads/9/6/2/9/9629077/teshuvah_on_womens_headcoverings_and_talitot_for_cki_web.pdf)
– Paul Glaser, CKI Ritual Committee Chair
civil. There was unanimity among the membersthat the wearing of a head covering (whethercalled a kippah, yarmulke, kova, or whatever),was a sign of respect and humility, and thatwhile not commanded by the Torah, centuriesof Jewish minhag (custom) supported thewearing of a head covering while in the syna-gogue building. Interests of egalitarianism callfor the elimination of any distinction betweenmen or women on this subject.
However, it was also recognized that someJews have different practices. For example, atsome Reform congregations, the wearing ofkippot and tallitot was simply not done. Todaymany Reform Jews do wear kippot and tallitot. You can also see regional differences in customof the type of head coverings used.Nonetheless, the Committee agreed that wehere at CKI could choose our own course.
While it is the desire of the Ritual Committee toencourage the wearing of head coverings forall, it was also emphasized that discretionshould be employed when asking a person vis-iting our building, or ascending to the bimah,to cover their head. No one should force a per-son to do so or act in a manner to causeembarrassment.
Therefore, the Committee decided to amendour policy to read: “All men are required towear head coverings; women are recommend-

When Rabbi Margaret came to town, she instituted the regular practice,
at Shabbat morning services, of reciting aprayer (page 63 of our siddur) for thehuman body, thanking G-d for creatingsuch a marvelous structure of organs, arteries, and glands. I thought, “Great, another prayer.” It wasn’t until this pastsummer, when I got my diagnosis, that Irealized the significance of that prayer.Lynn and I thank G-d for giving us gooddoctors and the benefits of modern medi-cine. And we thank you, all of our CKIFamily, for your warm wishes, support, and, of course, your prayers as I under-went surgery last month. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

CKI Men’s Club proudly invites you to attendthe first-ever appearance at CKI of representa-tives of the Midwest Chapter of JNF to answersuch questions as:
• what is JNF and when did it begin?• what exactly does the JNF do now?• why should we care?• what does it have to do with the planter potsin front of Walgreens stores?
Help us welcome Beth Cherner, ExecutiveDirector of JNF’s Midwest Region Office, andTheodore Banks, former Midwest RegionPresident and current National Treasurer, asthey offer a fascinating presentationon Wednesday, November 6, at 7:30 PM, in CKI’s social hall.
There is no charge to attend and the event isopen to the public. Anyone interested in thedevelopment and well-being of the State ofIsrael will want to attend. Older children (11 and up) may find the talk interesting aswell. Light refreshments will, of course, be provided (this is a Men’s Club event, after all).
Bat Mitzvah
Katie Irelan is anElgin native whoattends the gift-ed academy atKimball MiddleSchool. Katie hasalways taken hereducation veryseriously, and hasperformed quitewell with herHebrew studies.Perhaps bestknown for herability to chant
the Ashrei, Katie credits her learning and herlove of synagogue and Hebrew studies toRabbi Klein, and the many regulars at the shulwho have helped her prepare for her B’naiMitzvah. Katie’s social action project, a commu-nity garden, raised over 100 pounds of fruitand vegetables that were donated to the localarea food bank. Known by her close family andfriends as “Chooch,” Katie also enjoys her regu-lar studies, writing, art, music, and is lookingforward to attending the Elgin High giftedacademy for her high school career. Her lifegoals vacillate between being a research scien-tist, Rabbi, President of the United States, and adoctor. We’re confident she’ll do well in what-ever she chooses to pursue in her career.
Imagine that…a doctor in the family! Oy!
On September 27, Rabbi Ari Moffic, Directorof InterfaithFamily/Chicago, presented
ideas on “Spiritual Parenting.” The first part ofthe discussion allowed participants to shareproblems of interfaith families. Rabbi Mofficstressed how Jews have always been a diversepeople. While our beliefs are often differentfrom other faiths, we also share many similari-ties. She said raising a child is a holy task. Shesuggested some specific opportunities to bringspirituality into life. 1) Bedtime should be atime of peace and comfort, reassuring the childthat G-d is watching over us. 2) When wakingin the morning, we should be grateful forawakening. 3) When we eat, we should showappreciation of food, awareness of hunger anda connection to the earth. 4) When playing, weshould follow The Golden Rule: Do unto othersas you would have them do unto you. 5) Shabbat should be a day to stop and rest. 6) Holidays should be joyous occasions whichbring us together. 7) Communications shouldbe loving, thoughtful, and open.
Check out the website at www.interfaithfami-ly.com and watch for more information andprogramming to strengthen all families.

Being a member of CKI sometimes takes alittle sweat (like when the air conditioning
isn’t working exactly right), and sometimes alittle tears. This time, we’re asking members toconsider giving a little blood. (One pint will do.)
On Sunday morning, November 10, CKI willhost its Annual Blood Drive, from 8:00 AM to12:30 PM, in the social hall.
The Drive is being conducted with the assis-tance of Heartland Blood Centers, a nonprofitmedical organization which supplies blood tothe area hospitals serving CKI members, suchas Sherman, St. Joseph, Delnor, and CentralDuPage. If you or someone you know had sur-gery locally in the past year requiring a bloodtransfusion, chances are the blood came from aHeartland donor.
Over the years, CKI members have donatedwell over 100 units of blood. We’d like to beable to donate 20 units this year. And sincesome prospective donors may be turned awaydue to medical reasons, a minimum of 30 vol-unteer donors need to come forward.
Donations will take place aboard Heartland’sstate-of-the-art Mobile Donation Unit (aka TheBloodmobile) that will be parked in our lot. Ifyou’re here to drop off your children for TorahSchool, this will be a perfect way to spend themorning. And bring a friend; non-members arewelcome. And don’t forget the juice and treatsafterward!
If you’ve never donated blood before, it’s easy, quick (in most cases the donation itself takes
less than 15 minutes) and relatively painless. Most important, IT’S A MITZVAH!
The Social Action Committee is coordinatingthe Drive. Walk-ins will be welcome, but reser-vations are strongly suggested. To pre-registerfor a donation time, please e-mail Paul Glaserat [email protected].
General donor qualifications include: being ingood health and feeling well; 17 years of age orolder (or 16 with written parental consent); 110pounds or more; and at least eight weeks sincethe last donation. Medications for high choles-terol, blood pressure, allergies, and most anti-inflammatory drugs are acceptable. Sometravel outside the U.S. might disqualify you. Formore information, including a list of medica-tions which may affect eligibility, check outHeartland’s website: www.heartlandbc.org.
Be sure to eat something within four hours ofthe donation, and bring a photo ID.
In the meantime, some excellent food sourcesof iron include chard, spirulina, blackstrapmolasses, tofu, thyme, parsley, cinnamon, andtumeric. We’ll be offering a special prize to theperson who comesup with the bestrecipe combiningall these ingredi-ents. So get to work, eat healthy, andwe’ll see you all onNovember 10.
