BERKELEY – California earned its fourth NCAA Tournament selection in fi ve seasons under head coach Mike Montgomery as the No. 12 seed Golden Bears will face No. 5 seed UNLV in an East Region second-round game on Thursday in San Jose, Calif. The contest will tip off at 4:27 p.m. (PT) from HP Pavilion and be televised on TruTV.

Led by Pac-12 Player of the Year and All-American Allen Crabbe, Cal enters the NCAA Tournament 20-11 overall after fi nishing in the top-four in the conference regular-season standings for the fi fth-straight season. Cal is the only team in the Pac-12 to record double-digit victories or place in the top four in the league in each of the last fi ve seasons since head coach Mike Montgomery took over the program.

    • Cal is making its second-straight and 18th all-time appearance in the NCAA Tournament. After going 30 years between appearances, the Bears have earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament 13 times since 1990. The winner of Thursday’s Cal-UNLV game will face the winner of Syracuse-Mon-tana Saturday, with the victor going to the East Regional games in Washington, D.C. next week.

    • Thursday’s game will be a rematch from a Dec. 9 contest in Haas Pavilion between the Bears and Runnin’ Rebels. Then-No. 21 UNLV picked up the 76-75 victory when Quintrell Thomas grabbed an airball and scored with 1.2 seconds remaining. Allen Crabbe paced the Bears with 18 points.

    • Cal is 19-17 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including a national championship in 1959. The Bears own an 11-6 mark in opening-round games.

    • Cal has earned a postseason berth all fi ve years under Mike Montgomery, also advancing to the second round of the National Invitation Tournament in 2011. Including an NIT berth in 2008 before Montgomery arrived, the Bears have advanced to the postseason a school-record six years in a row.

    • The 108 total wins so far in Mike Montgomery’s fi rst fi ve seasons mark the winningest fi ve-year stretch since 1960 when Pete Newell completed his fi nal fi ve seasons with 110 wins.

    • Junior guard Allen Crabbe became the third Golden Bear in the past four seasons to be select-ed as the Pac-12 Player of the Year in a vote by the league’s head coaches. Crabbe fi nished the season as the regular-season scoring champion and owns an 18.7 points-per-game average. Crabbe was also named a Third Team All-American by The Sporting News. • Crabbe was a First Team All-Pac-12 selection for the second-consecutive season, while Justin Cobbs garnered Second Team All-Pac-12 laurels in 2013.

    • The junior guard duo of Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs is the highest scoring pair in the Pac-12 with a combined average of 34.2 points per game. Crabbe leads the Pac-12 and ranks 35th nationally at 18.7 points per game, while Cobbs ranks eighth in the conference at 15.5 points per contest. The pair has combined to score1,059 of Cal’s 2,094 points (50.6 percent) this season.

    • Allen Crabbe, who was named one of 30 candidates for the Naismith National Player of the Year Award, enters the NCAA Tournament as the Pac-12’s active career scoring leader and 10th in school history with 1,510 career points in 96 career games. He ranks 12th on the school’s single-season scoring list with 580 points so far this season.

    • Allen Crabbe and Justin Cobbs are joined in the line-up by sophomore F David Kravish, freshman G Tyrone Wallace and junior F Richard Solomon. Cal has used this lineup each of the last 15 games.

    COACHING AWARDS AND ACCOLADES

    BERKELEY.REPRESENT. GAME 32 | NCAA TOURNAMENT

One of college basketball’s elite coaches, Mike Montgomery has led California to one of the most successful stretches in school history in his fi rst four seasons at the helm of the Golden Bears.

Cal has earned a postseason berth and fi nished in the top-four in the Pac-12 Conference in each of Montgomery’s fi rst four seasons in Berkeley. The Bears captured their fi rst conference championship in 50 years in 2010 and tied for second in the league in 2012

with 24 wins overall and 13 victories in conference each of those seasons. The Bears’ 88 wins under Montgomery is the most in any four-year stretch in more than 50 years.

Montgomery was rewarded with a contract extension by Director of Athletics Sandy Barbour in the summer prior to the 2012-13 season for his standout achievements at Cal.

A four-time Pac-12 Coach of the Year and recipient of a John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award, Montgomery has brought a proven record of success to Berkeley following successful tenures at Stanford and Montana, and a stint as the head coach of the NBA’s Golden State Warriors. He has led his squads to 22 postseason appearances, claimed fi ve conference titles, and reached the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament. In 2011, Montgomery became the seventh active NCAA head coach to reach 600 Division I wins.

Montgomery owns a 655-302 (.684) record at the college level. He was 393-167 (.702) over 18 years at Stanford from 1987-2004 and 154-77 (.667) during the previous eight seasons at Montana. In his fi fth season at Cal, Montgomery is 108-58 (.651). Overall, 30 of his 31 teams have posted winning records, including this season.

At Stanford, Montgomery led the Cardinal to 12 NCAA tournament appearances, including the 1998 Final Four, four NIT selections, four regular-season Pac-12 titles and the 2004 Pac-12 Tournament crown. 27 of his players earned fi rst-team All-Pac-12 honors and fi rst- or second-team Pac-12 All-Academic notice on 25 occasions.

Montgomery received the John R. Wooden “Legends of Coaching” Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. Three student-athletes under his tutelage have been named Wooden All-Americans; Todd Lichti (1989), Mark Madsen (2000), and Casey Jacobsen in (2001).

The 15th men’s basketball head coach in Cal history, Montgomery earned his bachelor’s of arts in physical education at Long Beach State in 1968. He received a master’s degree in physical education from Colorado State in 1976. In 2002, Montgomery was named to the Long Beach State Hall of Fame.

Montgomery is the ninth-winningest active Division I head coach and in the top-30 in all-time wins at the Division I level with 655.

    • Cal is 19-17 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, including a national championship in 1959.

    • The Bears own an 11-6 mark in opening-round games. They played in a fi rst-round game in Dayton, Ohio, last season, drop-ping a 65-54 decision to South Florida.

    • Cal has played nine teams in the NCAA Tournament fi eld this season and gone 6-6 in those contests.

The next year, Cal captured the conference’s regular-season title and earned a No. 8 seed. The Bears defeated ninth-seeded Louisville, 77-62, in Jacksonville, Fla., before a 68-53 setback to top-seeded Duke in the second round.

    • Cal has earned a postseason berth all fi ve years under Mike Montgomery, also advancing to the second round of the NIT in 2011. Including an NIT berth in 2008 before Montgomery arrived, the Bears have advanced to the postseason a school-record six years in a row.

    • Montgomery is 2-4 in postseason tournament games at Cal and has had his squads chosen for the NCAA Tournament 15 times during the course of his 31-year collegiate coaching ca-reer.
