Dear guests and friends of the Hilton Malta,Welcome to this very special edition of our magazine. The 31st of May 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first Hilton hotel in the world, in Cisco, Texas, in the United States of America. Since that milestone date in 1919, the brand has gone from strength to strength. Globally, there are currently just under 5700 hotels, in more than 100 countries, under a total of 17 brands, with new properties opening every day. Hilton has been bringing memorable experiences to countless guests, clients and team members for a century, returned value to the owners who supported it, and made a strongly positive impact on the various communities in which it operates. We at the Hilton Malta are proud to belong to this worldwide family, and to join in fulfilling its mission – in Conrad Hilton’s words, to ‘fill the world with the light and warmth of hospitality’ – for at least another 100 years. And what better way to celebrate this anniversary than to offer new ways for our guests and customers to enjoy the hospitality of the Hilton Malta? Our outlets are currently buzzing with activity, including our breakfast and tapas offerings at the Vista Lobby Lounge, and our refreshed themed buffets at Oceana. Add to this our new à la carte menu at Oceana and our Taste of Thailand experience at Blue Elephant, and we have a culinary delight to suit everyone’s tastes. Our refurbishment projects are progressing at an exciting pace as our new state-of-the-art sauna and steam room open their doors, and we make plans to revamp over 100 rooms. Other projects are in the pipeline, and I look forward to sharing details of these in the very near future. Needless to say, Hilton would not be the world-renowned and successful brand that it is without its people, the 10 million team members that it has engaged since it opened its first property. Their passion for hospitality, the drive to excel, to give each and every guest a memorable experience, have ensured the strength and long life of a brand that has recently been named the No. 1 Workplace on the 2019 Fortune 100 Best Companies to Work For List. And our teams are happy to give back to the communities in which they work and live. Hilton Malta team members have regularly undertaken community projects; one of these, specially designed to mark this special year, was the planting of 100 trees at Ta’ Qali on 28th March. We are looking forward to watching this living anniversary memento grow over the years into a little corner of the Maltese islands which will give pleasure and shade to visitors for many years to come. I will leave you to enjoy the pages of this anniversary issue of our publication. Thank you for all your support over the years. We are committed to rewarding your loyalty with many more years of warm hospitality and exceptional experiences.

ADVERT THE 31st of May 2019 marks the 100th

anniversary of the opening of the

first Hilton hotel in the world in Cisco,

Texas. This milestone brings with it a century’s worth of

innovative hospitality and revolutionised thinking.

When Conrad Hilton first laid eyes on the two-story,

40-room Mobley Hotel in 1919, he said it looked “like a

convenient place to sleep. Nothing more.” While Hilton

may not have been dreaming of the international empire

that Hilton is today, he did have a vision of what the

Cisco property could one day become.

That vision enabled Hilton to push forward, finding

new and innovative ways to better serve guests, as he

anticipated their needs before they did themselves.

As the company grew over the coming decades, it

faced countless changes and challenges, ranging from

the Great Depression, to World War II, to shifting traveller

tastes and dramatic shifts in technology. But one thing

that didn’t change was its core pioneering spirit and

vision for what hospitality could be.

The Hilton name is synonymous with firsts. To mention

just a few, Hilton was the first to introduce room service,

install colour televisions and air-conditioning in rooms,

and was the first hotel company to appreciate what

technology can do for a business and get on the internet!

Till today, it is still a clear front-runner with regards to

firsts in the industry. Hilton has most recently opened

the first-ever underwater villa at the Conrad Maldives.

That spirit of innovation has continued throughout

the company’s nearly 100-year history, right on until

today. Since that milestone in 1919, the brand currently

operates just under 5,700 hotels, in more than 100

countries, under a total of 17 brands, with new properties

opening every day.

CONRAD

Born Conrad Nicholson Hilton, the man everyone came to know as ‘Connie’ started life in sun-drenched San Antonio in New Mexico where his father was a successful merchant and trader. Growing up, Connie dreamt of becoming a banker, and that’s what prompted him to move to Texas to make a name for himself.

When a deal on a bank fell through, young Connie spent the night at a cheap-and-cheerful hotel close by. He saw how good business was at the hotel and decided to use his $5,000 – together with the support of his friends – to buy it instead. This was to be the humble beginning of the Hilton empire.

The visionary behind the brand

To accomplish big things, I am convinced you must first dream big dreams.

EARLY DAYS

After building a small chain of hotels in Texas from nothing, Connie found himself on the brink of losing them all more than once during the Great Depression. The only thing that kept the dream alive was his sheer determination; Hilton’s ambitions only grew, setting his sights on New York, Chicago, and eventually – the world.

The year 1921 saw another gruelling recession, but that didn’t stop Connie’s expansion across the US, which amounted to around $6,000 per month –more than $80,000 in today’s currency.

Connie was on a tireless mission to buy dilapidated hotels all over the state and bring them back to life, but his ambition eventually led him to actually build one of his own. He found the perfect location in Dallas, and that’s where he built the first real Hilton Hotel.

The Great Depression saw travel – and, consequently, the hospitality business – collapse. Around 80% of hotels in the US filed for bankruptcy or underwent foreclosure. Connie, however, did everything he could to keep doors open and rooms filled. Everyone in the business worked to save every possible penny, shutting down entire floors of some hotels, getting rid of phones to save fifteen cents here and there, and going without pay cheques, instead working for room and board to get them by. These hardships transformed into something of a blessing for Connie, because it meant that many hotels out there were up for sale on the cheap. In 1937, the young Hilton made his first forays beyond Texas, purchasing the Sir Francis Drake near Union Square in good old San Francisco. Next came Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York.

GOING INTERNATIONAL

As Conrad gained renown, he developed a taste for international expansion. It wasn’t long before he went to the Board to sort out an international subsidiary: Hilton International, which happened officially in 1948. Before he knew it, Hilton hotels had set up shop in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Mexico City, Madrid, and a whole host of other cities, with each establishment working alongside and hiring locals. The Hilton company gradually grew into the global presence we know it to be today. In 1964, the International branch shot out as a distinct public company, later acquired by Trans World Airlines. In 1986 United Airlines took the wheel, and one year later, the British Ladbroke Group assumed control, until 2006, when the US Hilton company merged with the rest of the global enterprises to consolidate its business across the globe •

Y E A R S O N

Hear the name ‘Hilton’ and your mind will no doubt sweep you away to a vibrant, luxurious world filled with travel, five-star service, and sumptuous hotels that have found homes in 113 locations across the globe. Today, it’s almost impossible to imagine that an empire 5,600 hotels and 17 world-class brands strong started out 100 years ago with one man’s vision and a single establishment in Crisco, Texas.

Conrad Hilton bought his flagship hotel in 1919, enjoying such success early on that he was soon able to buy and build more hotels all over the state. The rest, as they say, is history.

A century has passed since Hilton’s first forays into the hospitality industry, and the company has welcomed more than three billion guests and employed almost ten million people to date.

Looking back at Hilton’s legacy, Stanford business professor’s Chip Heath has teamed up with bestselling business author Karla Starr to take a deep dive into what, in their 2018 book of the same name, they’ve called ‘the Hilton effect’. Together, Heath and Starr explore and examine the global phenomenon that is the Hilton brand, and how the company has impacted people and communities all over the world and across generations.

THE HILTON EFFECT: GUESTS, EMPLOYEES, COMMUNITIES

In a nutshell, ‘the Hilton Effect’ refers to the global, positive force that the multi-national brand has grown into over generations. It’s about the effect it continues to have on countless lives and communities, and about how and why the brand revolutionised the hospitality industry one milestone at a time.

By expanding into untapped travel markets and consistently offering the same high standards of service at every one of their hotels, Hilton transformed hotels into far more than simply a pleasant place to rest your weary head after a long day’s travel. These hotels and all they represent became a destination in themselves, with every establishment marking another step towards bringing cultures closer together.

HILTON’S GUESTS

Hilton is synonymous with the comfort, efficiency, and familiarity that allows travellers the world over to broaden their cultural horizons. Perhaps the biggest feather in the company’s cap, the brand has made international travel easier than ever before for its guests. Hilton single-handedly changed the nature of the hotel industry with

a series of firsts, from air-conditioned lobbies and the first concierge service aimed at females, to fresh running water and TVs in guest rooms, a service tailored specifically to the business travel market, and more.

HILTON’S EMPLOYEES

The company also fostered the kind of culture that rewards an entrepreneurial, independent mindset with a whole host of career opportunities. As part of the Hilton family, you could start your career journey as a junior team member and work your way to C-suite level; ambition and hard work are celebrated and rewarded here. THE HILTON EFFECT ON COMMUNITIES

Economies across the Hilton world have benefitted massively from the brand’s presence. The company was the first to tap into countless emerging markets and worked hard to earn its place in the communities that welcomed Hilton with open arms. From building roads to improve access to remote parts of Nigeria and regenerating docks in Buenos Aires to becoming part of London’s iconic skyline, Hilton has become part of local history and culture, revitalised economies, and strengthened the infrastructure of every community the company calls ‘home’ •

100 YEARS OF SERVICE

Meet Alex Spiteri and Anthony Scicluna, two of Hilton Malta’s longest standing

employees, together making up 100 years of service.

AL | I think the biggest change has been in how big

the team has become! In the past we were a relatively

small group, but with the hotel’s expansion, it’s only

natural that we’ve grown as a team as well. Nowadays,

every day we are introduced to new members,

and making new friends.

AN | Technology has made a big difference in how

we work obviously. Another change is the hotel

itself. When the Hilton was first built it was classical

but small, nowadays we have more facilities like the

indoor and outdoor pools, the gym and a large lobby.

HOW HAS HILTON MALTA CHANGED SINCE YOU JOINED 50 YEARS AGO?

AL | I first started working night shifts, with Anthony

actually. After four years I was promoted and started

working day shifts. My day would start at 7 AM until

3:30 PM, unless I was on the afternoon shift from 3 till

11 PM. Working at the switchboards used to keep us

busy as the work was very manual and involved a lot

of back and forth. Things are a lot faster now thanks

to automated systems.

AN | My experience at Hilton began as a night

auditor, meaning I was on the night shift for six years.

Eventually I went to the finance department. But as

Alex said, 50 years ago our workday involved a lot of

work where we checked figures and stock manually

on a big analytics sheet.

WHAT WAS YOUR AVERAGE WORKDAY LIKE WHEN YOU JOINED?

AL | I don’t really remember my first day but I

have very fond memories of my first years here.

Sometimes, it was more about coming to play than

to work. When we finished the night shift we’d go

for a coffee together the next day or we’d go to play

football or swim together, or play tennis. We were all

the same age, as all the 17 and 18-year-olds would

work the night shifts. I actually hated having off days,

because I preferred coming to work.

AN | I certainly remember having to catch two buses

each way from Cottonera to St Julian’s and back.

In fact, I was once called back to the office to fix a

mistake my supervisor had found. So I had to get

out of bed and catch two buses to St Julian’s. I never

made another mistake again!

CAN YOU RECALL YOUR FIRST MEMORIES HERE?

AL | I’ve always loved meeting VIPs, especially film stars. AN | My work experience at the Cavalieri Hilton in

Rome is definitely a highlight. After living there for

three months, Rome became like a second home

to me. Besides that, my wedding, which took place

here, is also one of my favourite Hilton memories •

AL | Our policy has always been to keep our guests

satisfied – our daily tasks can change, but our goal

remains the same.

AN | While technology and updated systems have

helped us work faster and more efficiently, the tasks

at their core remain the same. We run costings, and

check stock. The most important thing is that we try

to work as a team.

TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENTS HAVE CHANGED HOW YOU WORK. ARE YOUR DAILY TASKS DIFFERENT NOW THAT YOU WORK HERE ON A PART-TIME BASIS?

AL | We say that the Hilton is our second family. So

we have to respect the Hilton, if we have any ideas

we share them, and it’s still a challenge for us even as

part-timers now. But I still enjoy it, being here is good

for me and it keeps me going.

AN | In the past I was involved in the social committee,

where we used to organise cultural tours and football

tournaments. Now I’m not involved anymore, but I

used to really enjoy finding ways to help us grow as a

community.

How did Tumas Group’s story with Hilton begin?Back in 1986, my late grandfather Tumas visited the grounds where Hilton Malta is currently situated and saw that the location offered massive potential for a hotel with the Hilton Brand. At the time he was interested in expanding Tumas Group’s share of the tourism market. Hilton was obviously very appealing as a brand, renowned for its class and luxury. And here we are over 30 years later!

How would you describe the past 30 years for Hilton Malta? We have worked very hard to create a unique experience for our guests - and that has involved implementing many changes. There have been 3 development phases over the past 20 years, brought about by a desire to innovate. The original Hilton premises were overhauled in 1996, when an investment of over €350 million resulted in a brand-new hotel with 329 rooms, the development of the Portomaso complex and the Marina. The hotel also underwent a revamp in 2008 when it expanded to 439 rooms and the hotel’s style evolved from a classic look to a more contemporary one. How do you think Hilton has influenced the local market?Hilton originally came to Malta in 1968, at a time when tourism was a new concept for the country. As Malta’s first luxury hotel, Hilton was instrumental in the development of tourism in Malta. It became a training ground for employees and whoever wanted to work in tourism and hospitality. At the time, there was no formal education being offered in these areas, and without skilled people we could not build an attractive destination for tourists. Locally, Hilton has always been a key player in the tourism industry. It was, and continues to be, a leader in setting accommodation standards.

Hilton Calling met with Angela Attard Fenech, Owner at Tumas Group, to learn more about Hilton’s beginnings in Malta and how Tumas Group came to be at the helm of

Malta’s most luxurious hotel.

Hilton & Tumas Group

What is the level of collaboration between Tumas Group and Hilton?Tumas Group works very closely with Hilton to come up with new concepts. Our priority is to invest in where we believe the future to be. Hilton’s incomparable experience and international outlook have been a huge source of knowledge for us. We aim to use our business acumen in conjunction with the Hilton brand to be catalysts in developing quality tourism on the island.

What do you think keeps people coming back to Hilton Malta? Our guests and residents enjoy a complete living experience with Hilton, as the complex offers more than just a hotel but includes a marina, restaurant and a casino. By collaborating with Hilton, we hope to continually improve tourism standards in Malta •

Transport yourself to a traditional Thai village with a visit to Blue Elephant, which comes complete with huts, a waterfall, and authentic Thai dishes. A global franchise, the first Blue Elephant was opened by founder Nooror Somany-Steppe in Brussels in 1980. Nearly 40 years later and you’ll find a Blue Elephant restaurant in Bangkok, Phuket, Paris, Brussels, Copenhagen, London and Malta.

Served by polite and charming staff, patrons can expect an abundance of flavours, probably some of the best Thailand has to offer.

The starters kick off the meal on a high – and it starts as it means to go on. The Taste of Thailand menu keeps to tradition with classic starters such as duck spring

rolls, Dim Sim, and prawn tempura. The Thai beef salad served with mango and avocado will tantalise your taste buds with its gorgeous fusion of sweet and savoury. And last but not least, you’re in for a treat with the Thung Pu – egg pastry stuffed with crab meat, cream cheese and spring onions. This dish is not to be missed.

As you transition to the next course, why not cleanse your palate with one of the varied selection of soups on offer. The aromatic chicken and coconut soup is the perfect way to warm yourself up for your mains. If you’re feeling adventurous and prefer to opt for something spicy, the Tom Yang Koong is a Thai classic that does not disappoint – it doesn’t hold three elephants for nothing!

Evoking the sights, sounds and smells of the kingdom of Thailand, the Blue Elephant restaurant offers delicious cuisine prepared

with the finest ingredients.

The main event can only be described as a multitude of sumptuous flavours and textures.

Seafood and fish items on the menu are a delight thanks to the fresh fish available. The green chicken

curry is a Thai staple that, while a safe choice, will definitely hit the spot. Surely a favourite, the crispy duck is a must-have, if only because no Thai meal is complete without it.

Vegetarians and vegans will certainly be pleased with the delicious stir-fried asparagus and mushroom in garlic sauce. The Pad Thai noodles are also a treat.

If by any miracle, there’s any room left, you can wind down with a light dessert of fresh fruit, ice cream, Mango cheesecake and tea-infused cake, all of which are prepared in-house •

#DIGITALENTREPENEURTo some people it might look like I just show up to fancy events and go to nice restaurants to have my picture taken - but my work is about a lot more than that. Having worked in marketing for a long while before venturing into my current projects, many of the same rules apply. My days are filled with client meetings, content planning sessions, and, yes, events. #PURPOSEA few years ago, I was in a very dark place, and embarking on this content creation journey is what got me out of it. I took a big risk, knowing that I might fail but that only spurred me on. Nowadays, I have the opportunity to engage with my audience on so many levels because different brands are embracing the community we’ve built together. #LIFESTYLERCollaborating with brands like Ted Baker, Moët Chandon and Hilton is a dream come true for me. I remember when Hilton first approached me, I jumped

at the chance because, not only did my dad work here, but I actually started my first job at Hilton Malta. An important part of being my own boss is that I have the freedom to be selective and only work on projects that I’m excited about. #BETTERTOGETHERSharing my life with my followers is like having a friend, but it’s obviously through social media. In fact, though I love working on the visual aspect of my job, I put a lot of work into my post captions, where I reach out to my followers and help them feel empowered to face the day. #BALANCESomething I always preach about is the balance of life. Something that keeps me active, and sane, is my daily to-do list, which is split into three parts; priorities, maybes and bonuses. Some days I barely get through my priorities, and other days I feel like a #queen, ticking off my bonuses!

Beyond ensuring a more environmentally friendly product, Enemed is taking steps to give back to the local community, particularly in the area of sports. The company’s sponsorship portfolio includes collaborations with the national waterpolo team, the Malta Drag Racing Association, the Malta Drifting Association, the Malta Aquatic Association, and the Malta Brigades Association. When asked where the interest in sports stems from, Enemed Executive Chairman Kevin Chircop shares his personal frustration about untapped potential in the local sports scene, “Malta tends to fall behind when it comes to sports – and it’s not like we don’t have talented and committed people to push us forward.” Due to a shortage of funding for local sports associations, many of the leaders within are volunteers, and are incredibly committed to their cause, however they often lack professional knowledge and experience, unable to escape the funding problems they’re faced with.

This is where Enemed comes in. “We feel that it’s our responsibility to reach out to local sports associations because we are aware of the support they require. You can never become sustainable if you do not have professional input to push you forward. Unfortunately, passion is not enough,” says Chircop. Instead of focusing solely on providing monetary support, Enemed works closely with its sports partners to identify the weakest links in their system where they would benefit most from Enemed’s backing. Prior to closing an agreement, expenses and costs are planned ahead and key performance indicators are put in place to measure the return on the invested funds. With this approach, associations are not only held accountable, but they’re also able to sensibly allocate funds where they are needed most - be it for strategic consultancy, human resources or event planning. Instead of setting an impossible standard on getting a return for their support, Enemed has implemented a system that allows the sponsored parties to develop a strategic and holistic approach to the point where the association will one day become self-sustainable.

In a time when awareness about climate change and environmental issues are at all-time high, local fuel company Enemed has its work cut out for itself. Malta’s leading fuel supplier, Enemed was formed in 2014. Since opening, Enemed’s team has strived to provide cleaner, safer, and superior quality fuels for the domestic, leisure, commercial, industry and the aviation sectors. Having launched the new ePower range for petrol and diesel, Enemed is hard at

work to develop higher quality fuels that are more efficient fuels and help to cut down on pollution.

Malta’s first powerboat racing event, VOOMQUEST is a clear example of Enemed’s sponsorship strategy. Enemed’s collaboration with five-time world champion, Aaron Ciantar, has led to the organisation of a quarterly event that has not only attracted racers from all over Europe, but also the recognition of the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the international governing body of powerboating championships. In its second year of contract with Enemed, VOOMQUEST has exceeded expectations, and is well on track. 2020 will see the closure of this partnership, and the team behind the race will have to seek out new partnerships, allowing itself to flourish in new ways, while Enemed moves on and tackles a new discipline.

“Our goal is to help these associations go beyond mediocrity and to shed the half-baked approach which plagues our islands,” says Chircop. With a focus on encouraging sponsorship partners to be professional, resourceful and proactive, Enemed is working to help associations tap into their potential wisely, without the risk of losing money or time.

Let’s grab a drink

Whether you’re here for some fun in the sun or hard at work on a business trip, it’s impossible to visit Malta without letting your hair down just once. As you’d expect from an island bam smack in the heart of the Mediterranean, Malta’s nightlife is vibrant, exciting and totally buzzing.

Here are our top three nightlife destinations:

Nightlifein Malta

Enjoy a drink with a side of history at one of the many bars on Valletta’s Strait Street. An alley with a past, this 100m stretch has gone back to its party roots thanks to the return of nighttime hangouts. Best known as the place to be when knights and sailors were looking for a good time in the times of yore, you’re guaranteed a bit of fun here.

Clubbing can be difficult in the summer heat, but the Maltese love a good party, and the rising temperature certainly isn’t going to stop anyone from having a good time. Throughout the summer months you can expect to find a number of weekly outdoors parties where you can head out for a relaxed drink and some banging tunes. Ask at Reception for more details.

IN MOTION

Have you ever looked at the sea and just wished you could bottle the unique movement and colours of the waves? With the perfect balance of rich hues and fluid composition, local artist Bel, has done just that. Creating one-of-a-kind pieces that capture the never-still waters of the Mediterranean, Bel’s art will stop you in your tracks with wonder.

Azure, cerulean, sapphire, cobalt, all these vivid shades of blue are not only reminiscent of the Mediterranean, but of Malta itself. The defining colour in our palette, Bel brings out the subtle tones that are so unmistakably Maltese.

GOING WITH THE FLOW

Though it goes by many names, fluid art is a form of abstract art that uses several media to create the illusion of movement. Fluid art visually captures movement created using a variety of paint media, such as ink, acrylic or resin. Instead of using a brush, the paint is poured, dripped and swirled over the canvas, mixing colours and consistency. Texture and flow can be manipulated by simply moving the canvas, moving the paint with a hair dryer, or using a blowtorch to create varying effects. An exercise in trial and error, Bel cites hours of research and experimentation with different colour palettes and techniques which have led her to her distinctive style.

BEL

A lover of dynamic media, whose work is a process of self discovery, Bel has caught the attention of art connoisseurs and thalassophiles alike. After studying Graphic Design in Milan at the Instituto Europeo Design IED, Bel has had a number of exhibitions over the years where she has been able to showcase her passion for art •

Because we like to do things a little differently here in Malta, the bootcamp phase is a little different to what usually happens on the X Factor. It’s at this point where every participant who’s gotten through the first round of auditions is put through the wringer of preparing for the next phase: live performances. Under the guidance of their coaches, the contestants took on 3 days of challenges and were eliminated along the way until the final 16 contestants remained. At the end of Bootcamp, the contestants were split up into the categories

of Girls, Boys, Groups and Over 25s, in the run up to perform for the judges Howard Keith, Ira Losco, Alexandra Alden and Ray Mercieca.

After 4 weeks of live performances, it was time for the semi-finals where Michela Pace, Nicole Frendo, Petra and Owen Leuellen battled it out for the number one spot. Having won over the judges and the audience, Michela Pace was crowned the winner of Malta’s first ever X Factor.

X FACTOR ROCKS MALTA

You may not know this about Malta, but there is nothing the Maltese love more than a talent contest. Hosted by local heartthrob Ben Camille, X Factor Malta was this year’s most watched show on TV. Audiences across the islands were on the edge of their seats this past February, waiting to learn who would be winning the grand prize, and representing Malta at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel.

But before the show hit the airwaves in October 2018, dozens of X Factor hopefuls had to face judges Howard Keith Debono, Ira Losco, Alexandra Alden and Ray Mercieca at bootcamp, which took place at The Conference Centre at Hilton Malta.

WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM JOB AS A CHILD?I was always into rap music; the ultimate job was that to become a rapper. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A PERFORMER?At age 14. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PERFORMANCE?Funnily enough my first performance on stage was during the ‘Bootcamp’ of X Factor Malta.

WOULD YOU RATHER FORGET THE LYRICS TO A SONG OR SING OFF TUNE?Forget the lyrics. WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR X FACTOR JOURNEY?My favorite part of the X Factor was the final because it was a great challenge and I managed to perform all the songs that I had put so much effort and work in.

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDSStrong, outgoing and fun. WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM JOB AS A CHILD?I remember clearly that when I was young, I always said that I wanted to become a psychologist. WHAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS ON YOUR “BUCKET” LIST?I want to go to a blues festival in the USA.

WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?My dream collaboration would be with Stevie Wonder! IF YOU HAD TO LISTEN TO ONE SONG FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?That’s impossible! How can you choose one song for the rest of your life!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PERFORMANCE?I remember this very clearly, I was around 6 years old and I sang in this band club a song called ‘Castle on a Cloud’ from Les Miserables. WHAT IS ONE OF THE THINGS ON YOUR “BUCKET” LIST?Without any doubt to go to an Adele concert. WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?My international dream collaboration would be with Sam Smith or James Arthur. Locally I would say The Travellers!

IF YOU HAD TO LISTEN TO ONE SONG FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?‘Fire on Fire’ by Sam Smith. WOULD YOU RATHER FORGET THE LYRICS TO A SONG OR SING OFF TUNE?I’d rather sing off tune!

DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN THREE WORDSBubbly, joyful and funny. WHAT WAS YOUR DREAM JOB AS A CHILD?I always wanted to be a criminologist. WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BECOME A PERFORMER?Must admit that this moment of realisation happened when I was around 13 years old. From then onwards I was focused on this. WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST PERFORMANCE?My first performance was in a competition organised in a town called Nadur in Gozo, the place where I live.

WHO DO YOU ADMIRE THE MOST?My parents, I cannot thank them enough for their constant patience and sacrifices they did for me. WHO WOULD BE YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION?It has to be Sia! IF YOU HAD TO LISTEN TO ONE SONG FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?Without any doubt - Bohemian Rhapsody! WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR X FACTOR JOURNEY?This X Factor Malta Journey was an amazing one but I must say that my absolute favourite part was that I got to work with the best people in the industry – namely the mentors, coaches and producers •

ST.PETER’S POOL

This beautiful slice of paradise is located on the extreme

southern end of the Island, close to the fishing village of

Marsaxlokk. It’s quite difficult to get there without your

own transport, but that means tourists don’t tend to go

there. When the weather is fine, this secluded location is a

fantastic spot for swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing.

MALTA’S MOST SERENE SPOTS & H I D D E N G E M SPerhaps the Mediterranean’s worst-kept secret, Malta and its sister island, Gozo, are home to countless hidden gems for visitors and locals alike to discover. The islands are, of course, at their best during the summer months, when tourism is at its absolute peak in the Med – so you might want to avoid the typical tourist-heavy areas like Sliema and St. Julian’s and find your own bit of paradise to enjoy. Malta is a lot more than its shopping and entertainment districts: you’re never far from its rugged natural beauty. Here are just some of our favourite (and most Instagrammable) spots:

VICTORIA LINES

The Victoria Lines are a wall of fortifications spanning 12

kilometres right across Malta, separating the northern

and southern parts of the island. These defences were

built by the British military in the 19th century, possibly in

response to the opening of the Suez Canal. The Victoria

Lines gained UNESCO World Heritage status in 1998, and

a walk along this piece of history offers great views on

sunny days.

WIED IL-GĦASRI

This picturesque valley is located in Gozo and runs from

Ta’ Dbiegi Hill all the way to the charming village of Għasri,

and the valley tapers off into a stream large enough to

swim in. The stream merges with the Mediterranean Sea,

and the avid divers among us will love exploring the

hidden underwater caves. At the point where the valley

touches the sea, you’ll find a ‘cave’ which is actually a

man-made shaft that was dug to transport sea water all

the way up to the top of the cliffs for use at the saltpans

nearby.

UPPER & LOWER BARRAKKA GARDENS

A welcome oasis of calm in a busy capital city, the Upper

and Lower Barrakka gardens in Valletta are home to some

of the best views on the island. Overlooking the breath-

taking natural harbour, these peaceful gardens are great if

you’re looking for the right place for an afternoon walk or

just want to sit down with a good book and unwind in the

shade on a sunny day. You’ll also be able to learn a little

history through the various plaques and statues dotted

around these beautifully kept gardens!

BONUS: MALTA’S UNDERWATER WRECKS

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, take your sightseeing underwater to get to know the real locals – colourful fish and

other-worldly underwater scenes that’ll have you awestruck. The Mediterranean is a hotspot for divers and snorkellers of

any skill level looking to explore long-forgotten shipwrecks. Some of the best wrecks to see are the MV Xlendi, the Um el

Faroud, the Imperial Eagle, and Rożi P29, as well as the the Bristol Beaufighter and Blenheim Bomber •

SAN BLAS BEACH

Like St. Peter’s Pool, this Gozitan bay isn’t the easiest

place to get to, but that makes it one of the quietest

and most unspoilt places on the island. Located around

the corner from its big sister, Ramla l-Ħamra, San Blas

boasts vibrant red sands and crystal blue sea. The steep

incline keeps the majority of sunseekers away, but if you

find your way there, you’ll be rewarded with a stunning

haven that complete with a little hut where you can get

yourself some cold drinks and ice cream. Perfect.

SAN BLAS BEACH

ST. JOHN’S CO-CATHEDRAL

Located in the beating heart of our capital city, this Roman

Catholic co-cathedral was built by the Order of St. John and

dedicated to St. John the Baptist in the 16th century. Escape

the hustle and bustle of city life and step into the beauty

and tranquillity this baroque-style masterpiece has to offer.

The outside of the structure is deceptively simple, following

the Mannerist style typical of the architect Girolamo Cassar,

but the interior is ablaze with gold gilding, adorned with

incredible art, and steeped in centuries of history.

MG car enthusiasts were in for a treat this past April at the official MG Car Club Malta launch at the Hilton Malta. The road leading up to the hotel saw an overwhelming number of MGs, from an MGTD dating back to 1953 to the MGAs, the Bs with their roaring sounds, GTs, Cs and MGFs too, as they all formed a colourful stretch along each side of the hotel. The launch was concluded with a picturesque drive down to Zonqor Point. The idea of the MG Car Club came to be when a number of MG Enthusiasts, including Hilton Malta’s Information Systems Manager, Joseph Casapinta, met for a Sunday drive. Surrounded by their very own MGs, one conversation led to another, and Joseph along with Kris Scicluna, already having an MG Page on Facebook, Robert Muscat, a Notary Public, Frank Mallia, an MG guru decided to start working on the MG Car Club. While the club is in its infancy, is already affiliated with the MG CAR CLUB, founded in 1930 based in Abingdon, the spiritual home of MG.
