Letters from
Our LeadersIt has been a joy and
a privilege to serve
the Conrad N. Hilton
Foundation since 1983.
Leading this global
humanitarian enterprise
has touched my heart and soul and given
profound meaning to my life. I am deeply
grateful to our board of directors, our staff
and our grantee partners for making a
meaningful and positive difference in the
lives of those in need.
I believe that we have found in my
successor, Peter Laugharn, someone who
has both the intellect and the heart to
lead this Foundation into the future. I look
forward to working closely with Peter in
my role as chairman.
I am delighted to be joining
the Conrad N. Hilton
Foundation as president and
CEO at a particularly exciting
time, as we are poised for
significant growth in the
coming years. I am grateful for the opportunity
to work alongside Steve, the board and a terrific
staff, all of whom are dedicated to advancing the
Foundation’s mission. Thanks to their efforts, we
are able to grant more than $100 million per year.
Conrad Hilton’s vision to improve the lives of
vulnerable and disadvantaged people throughout
the world is just as relevant as it was when he
established the Foundation 70 years ago. I am
personally committed to honoring his directive
to “Think Big, Act Big, Dream Big,” in order to
pursue our mission.

Rooted in the life interests and vision of Conrad N. Hilton, the Foundation pursues approaches that touch a diversity of people, places and needs by developing long-term projects and partnerships.
• We invest in six strategic initiatives that involve funding multiple partners, generating new knowledge and collaborating with other funders: Catholic Sisters, Children Affected by HIV and AIDS, Foster Youth, Homelessness, Substance Use Prevention, and Safe Water.
• The Foundation also supports organizations through five major programs: Avoidable Blindness, Multiple Sclerosis, Disaster Relief and Recovery, Catholic Education, and Hospitality.
CONRAD N. HILTON
Conrad Hilton’s life was grounded in a deep faith in God and country, an intrinsic belief in hard work and the ability to “dream big.” He founded Hilton Hotels—the largest and most profitable hotel empire of his era—and believed in the potential of his hotels to foster understanding among peoples of the world.
His concern for the disadvantaged was genuine and was expressed throughout his lifetime. Upon his death, Conrad Hilton left virtually his entire estate to the Foundation with a directive to relieve “the suffering, the distressed and the destitute,” establishing a perpetual legacy of global humanitarianism. His three sons and their descendants have carried on the Hilton philanthropic legacy.
BARRON HILTON
Barron Hilton, middle son of Conrad Hilton, played a guiding role on the Foundation’s board of directors from 1950 to 2014. Following a successful career at the helm of Hilton Hotels Corporation, he served as chairman of the Foundation from 2007 to 2012.
Over the years, Barron Hilton has contributed a great deal of his wealth to the work of the Foundation, and has furthered the legacy of altruism started by Conrad Hilton. Like his father, Barron Hilton has committed his personal fortune to the Foundation. His leadership and generous financial contributions will enable the Foundation to significantly increase its impact.
OUR APPROACH
Conrad N. Hilton began the Foundation from his commitment to helping those in need.
Barron Hilton furthered this belief with his devotion to the cause. We, the board and staff,
are honored to continue this mission.
“ Love one another, for that is the whole law; so our fellow men deserve to be loved and encouraged—never to be abandoned to wander alone in poverty and darkness.”
Conrad N. Hilton [ 1887-1979 ]

Catholic Sisters contribute to human
development through their spiritual witness
and service to those in need. More than
700,000 Sisters around the world educate our
children, care for the vulnerable, stand with
the oppressed, promote peace and advocate
for justice. Like our founder, we recognize
Sisters as resourceful, efficient and powerful
agents of social change. We support programs
that build the capacity of the global sisterhood
to attract and retain members, exercise
leadership and attract and steward resources.

STRATEGIC INITIATIVE

Two hundred million of the world’s children
under five do not reach their full potential—and
for children in regions with high HIV and AIDS
prevalence, the outcomes are more severe.
By investing in integrated early childhood
interventions, we believe opportunity exists to
prevent irreversible damage before it occurs,
to foster resilience and to enable young
children to thrive. Our strategy focuses on
building capacity of caregivers and parents in
meeting developmental needs, strengthening
community-based organizations and bolstering
practice and policy with advocacy and
knowledge sharing.

Achieving healthy and productive lives for transition-age youth in foster care
FOSTER YOUTH ]]STRATEGIC INITIATIVE
Foster youth between the ages of 15 and 21
face many challenges as they transition into
adulthood and age out of the foster care
system. Typically they have few supportive
adults in their lives, limited access to college
and career options, and strong likelihood of
continued interaction with public systems.
Despite these barriers, they are resilient
and can make the transition if given the
opportunity. We work with partners in New
York and Los Angeles to increase foster youth
self-sufficiency, strengthen the systems
that provide services to youth in care and
research best practices and needs in the
field of child welfare.

People experiencing chronic homelessness are
among the most vulnerable and disadvantaged
in our society, often requiring a disproportionate
and costly amount of public health and safety
services. A wide body of research shows that
permanent supportive housing is the best, most
cost-effective solution. We believe strongly in
collaboration and work closely with our public,
nonprofit and philanthropic partners within Los
Angeles County with the common goal of ending
chronic homelessness.

Youth and young adults are particularly at
risk for developing substance use disorders,
which carry the potential for life altering
consequences. The likelihood of developing
a substance use disorder is greatest for
those who begin alcohol or other drug use
in their early teens. Prevention and early
intervention can help limit experimentation
and reduce risky behavior before serious
social and health problems develop. Our
partners advance innovative screening and
early intervention approaches to prevent and
reduce youth substance use and promote
health and wellbeing.

Clean water scarcity is a significant problem
in rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa, yet it
is critical to human health and livelihoods.
Providing access to safe and affordable
water at reasonable distances from the
home improves productivity, community
participation and school attendance. We
partner with organizations working in Burkina
Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mali, Niger and India,
targeting vulnerable and disadvantaged
populations living in these countries.

CATHOLIC EDUCATION
Revitalizing Catholic schools serving low-income families
We seek to improve the operational vitality of Catholic schools, with a national emphasis on accessing public funding to ensure that low-income families have equal access to all educational options, and a local emphasis on supporting schools in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
HOSPITALITY
Building career pathways for youth in the hospitality sector
In honor of the contributions of the Hilton family to the hotel industry, we partner with organizations helping young people build careers in hotel and restaurant management.
DISASTER RELIEF AND RECOVERY
Supporting disaster preparedness, relief and long-term recovery
We remain committed to ensuring that funds are available for ongoing disaster recovery and building resilient communities, while emphasizing the importance of following internationally accepted standards and best practices.
AVOIDABLE BLINDNESS
Preventing avoidable sight loss from cataract and blinding trachoma
Our support focuses on the elimination of trachoma and increasing access to cataract surgery to improve quality of life for vulnerable populations in developing countries.
MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS
Seeking a cure and improving quality of life for those who live with multiple sclerosis
For over five decades, we have awarded
grants to researchers and healthcare
practitioners hoping to discover the
cause of multiple sclerosis (MS), a
chronic and often disabling disease
of the central nervous system.

Honoring extraordinary contributions that alleviate human suffering
At $2 million, the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize is the world’s largest humanitarian award. Inaugurated in 1996, as a tribute to Conrad N. Hilton’s lifetime of personal philanthropy, the annual award is presented to a nonprofit organization that is improving the lives of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Nominations are received from throughout the world and the final selection is made by a prestigious international jury.
The Prize is intended to recognize and expand the organization’s extraordinary humanitarian contributions and to highlight the need for greater humanitarian aid in the world. As the Foundation enters its third decade awarding the Prize, it is also supporting the Hilton Prize Coalition, an independent alliance of all Prize Laureate organizations. This global coalition explores collaborative innovations and shares best practices to advance the field of humanitarian work.
