In our history class, we were to write a letter from a soldier from the Western Front. I chose Private Arthur Carl Plet from Ottawa, enlisted on the 22nd of September 1914, at the age of 19. He had two brothers and four sisters. I felt strangely close to him – I am also from a big family, and I have a little brother named Arthur.

This is the letter I thought Private Arthur Carl Plet could have written.

25th of April, 1915

Dear Mother and Father,

I know I haven’t written to you in the

past few weeks, and I apologize for the delay. I

hope you and the others are faring well. I am

afraid I can’t say so for myself, even if I am in a

much better shape than some poor lads in my

unit. But pray do not worry, for I consider

myself lucky to be here at all.

As I mentioned in my last letter, we sailed

out to France and arrived at Armentières in

February. Most of the days we spent digging

the trenches; a tiring and boring job really, in

my opinion, yet necessary for our safety. Later

on, we were ordered to Ypres, Belgium. Sadly,

nothing could prepare me for what was

awaiting us there….. The battlefield was a

ghastly site; nearly all trees had been destroyed,

half sunken bodies lying in the muck, barbed

wire, the grey soil that was stretching on for

miles. It was nearly impossible to walk. Rain

and constant bombardment made the soil of

the battlefield like something of a swamp. And

with the Huns taking a higher ground, we were

easy targets. As the time went by, there were

more and more landowners, yet less and less

time to bury them. Some would lie in the

trenches, some would be only half buried,

rotting and oh the stench. Images of rats

crawling over the dead still haunt me in my

dreams…..

And on the 22nd of April came a

horrifying day that began this battle with a

frightful start. I was in the dugout, hiding

from the bombardment when the gas came. I

could hear the bombs cut through the air, and I

could feel the tremor only seconds later, as they

hit the ground with great explosions. But then

suddenly everything went silent. Peter was the

one who saw it first. Peter Cunningham, a

gunner by rank, was the lad I happened to get

Unfortunately, Private Arthur Carl Plet could not have written home to his family on the 25th of April. He died on the 22nd of April, 1915, on the day of the first gas attack in history. This fateful day was his very first battle, and also his last. When I realized that, I felt sad. I felt sorry for Arthur and I felt sorry for his parents. How awful it must have been for them to wait for a letter from their son. They waited for him to tell them that he was fine, that he was alive. They waited for a letter that never came. [Sofia Sudo, Gr.11]

Canada at Vimy Ridge Throughout contemporary military history, Canada’s name, Canadian war heroes and Canadian contributions have been sadly neglected. This, in site of the fact that Canadian efforts have been out of all proportion to our relatively small population. We have been consistently neglected or lumped in under British or Allied forces, with our more powerful allies getting most of the credit. One exception to this “oversight” is the Canadian victory at Vimy Ridge, forever immortalized by those twin majestic spires on land perpetually dedicated to Canada. April 2017 is the 100th anniversary of this momentous event. To this end, starting with the January and follow-ing two issues of “CONTACT!” the highlights of this epic battle will be presented. Most material is taken from internet sites, including Government sources, and work by military historian Tim Cook. The human destruction of the Great War was on a scale never before witnessed in human history. Blood, bones, brains and torsos were scattered in a sea of mud, most never to be found or identified, simply remembered as “A soldier of the Great War, known only to God.” So many Canadian husbands, sons, fathers, brothers, etc., are included in this lost assemblage, giving their lives on foreign soil, so far from their peaceful home and native land. “Let us never forget.” Garry R. Fancy

suddenly everything went silent. Peter was the

one who saw it first. Peter Cunningham, a

gunner by rank, was the lad I happened to get

to know on the ship that took me to France.

Well, anyway, he was the one to call us out

from the dugout to see something strange. I

and a few others came out and saw it creep

down the hill. A big heavy green cloud

stretched for miles across the No Man’s Land. I

have never seen something so frightening. And

just our luck – the Germans had a favourable

wind for such an attack. It pushed the cloud

right towards the division to our left. That is

when we heard the screams – the French-

Algerian division was fleeing. As the rest of the

soldiers from the dugout came out, an officer

ran in and yelled for us to move to the French-

Algerian trenches to block the gap that was

made when they fled. Apparently, the Huns

were advancing from behind the cloud. I wish I

could say that I was ready to fight, but I can’t.

I was scared. I could not even move for a

minute as Peter and I watched the cloud begin

to show its nature. Men would fall to the

ground choking as if there was no air for them

to breathe. And then, they would just die…..

Later, I found out what that poisonous gas

really did. It burned the throat and made the

lungs fill up with foam, quickly suffocating the

poor wretch. Back then though, I had no idea

what was happening. I don’t even remember

how I got to the trenches.

The good thing is, at hospital I have time

to write you. I do hope this letter reaches you.

Pray do not worry about me and look after

yourselves.

With love,

Arthur

Vimy - The Battle The Canadian infantry was well supported when it went into battle with over 1,000 artillery pieces laying down withering, supportive fire. Attacking together for the first time, the four Canadian divisions stormed the ridge at 5:30 am on April 9 (Easter Monday) 1917. More than 15,000 Canadian infantry overran the Germans all along the front. Incredible bravery and discipline allowed the infantry to continue moving forward under heavy fire, even when their officers were killed. CWM19920085-479 Taking Vimy Ridge, advancing with tank over no mans land 01575 There were countless acts of sacrifice, as Canadians single-handedly charged machine-gun nests or forced the surrender of Germans in protective dugouts. Hill 145, the highest and most important feature of the Ridge, and where the Vimy monument now stands, was captured in a frontal bayonet charge against machine-gun positions. Three more days of costly battle delivered final victory. Early in the morning of April 9, 1917, 20,000 soldiers attacked in the first wave of fighting. By that afternoon, the two front lines had been taken by the Canadian Corps. By April 12, the entire ridge was under Allied control. When Hill 145, the highest feature on the ridge, fell, the operation was considered to be a resounding success. The ridge remained in Allied hands for the duration of the war.
