Our volunteers have all worked very diligently in 2018/19 and a lot has been accomplished and I commend you for your dedicated support. We have developed a strong branch that has gained the respect of other branches and of those to whom we report. In this Branch we are all volunteers no matter what it is we do for the branch and we have, as a team, earned this respect. There are many things yet to be accomplished, but let it be known that we are a happy and welcoming Branch enjoying our service to the veterans and to our local community. Cheers, Bruce Immediate Past President It was a privilege to represent Branch #638 at the West End Learning Unlimited (WELU), a branch client annual volunteer dinner, on May 24 as a thank you to the Branch for use of our facilities, and especially a big thank you to our branch volunteers, Adrianus and Linda Jane Cornelisse, who looked after providing coffee, cookies, donuts for over 150 people six consecutive Tuesday mornings three or four times a year. Unfortunately, Adrianus and Linda Jane were not available to attend. On May 26 at the 872 Kiwanis – Kanata Squadron Royal Canadian Air Cadets 39th Annual Review representing Branch #638, I had the privilege of being a part of the Reviewing party and the honour to present the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence to a cadet. This is one of the sports that we offer to our branch members. I would like to congratulate my golf partner Brenda for winning the Senior Division at this year’s tournament. Poppy Campaign 2019

Once again poppy time approaches. The campaign begins on the last Friday in October, October 25. If I do not hear from you in the next month or so I will assume that you will continue with whatever position you held last year in any capacity. If you are not available kindly let me know as soon as possible. It is a long campaign this year so we will need lots of volunteers to fill many spots.

In advance I thank each one for the work and commitment to our legion.

Branch Service Officer Report

This month two clients have been assisted in filing claims, with a third to be visited soon.

The Provincial Service Officer will be attending the branch the week of July 8, 2019. If you wish to discuss past or future claims with her, please advise the Branch Service Officer. Any CF veterans and former RCMP, (you do not have to be a Legion member), may register for an appointment to discuss pensions, disabilities, or questions pertaining to them that are related to your service to your country. Unfortunately, the exact day of the visit has yet to be determined. However, an appointment is necessary.

On June 15, branch members Linda and John Harju and I attended the District SO training session.

I’m happy to announce that Linda will be stepping into the position of assistant service officer. John will be the back-up if neither Linda nor I are available. John found the seminar to be of direct use to him in his capacity of volunteer group leader for OSISS. Between Linda and John, they bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to us.

The Service Officer committee is now composed of Sue McLean BSO, Linda Harju ABSO, Jane Cane Comforts Officer, and John Harju.

The free talk on cyber fraud was well attended.

Home visits to veterans and spouses are proceeding well and both the visits and the gifts are greatly appreciated.

I would like to extend a thank you to Bridlewood Home Hardware, for the discount that they applied to the purchase of this year’s comfort.

This year’s Veterans’ lunch was a success in all but finances. Command is sticking to the letter of the law: i.e., meals can only be claimed for veterans, spouses and/or caregiver. Any branch member attending or volunteering who does not fit these categories will have to pay for their meal in future.

Local Cadet Corps Support Our Bingo

Over the past number of years, the Kanata Legion has enjoyed a terrific relationship with our four local cadet organizations. The last mutual support activity is cadets providing floor workers to assist in the conduct of our weekly Sunday Bingos.

Ladies’ Auxiliary The Ladies’ Auxiliary’s 24th annual fundraiser held on June 8, 2019 was one of the best; raising funds to go towards the replacement of outside manual signs with electronic signs to better promote remembrance, events, etc.!

The Black and White Social Affair theme was something new and proved to be a good choice because guests could participate by wearing black and white, and decoration ideas were plentiful. Black and White table decorations such as serviette bow ties, black table runners on white linen tablecloths and tall glass centrepieces with black & white marbles and lights accom-panied with black and white wall decorations were superb. The ladies put together a very appetizing charcuterie table for guests to enjoy and that they did! As well, guests’ taste buds were tantalized as they ate an excellent dinner including tender barbecued beef tenderloin and a sinfully delicious “Sex in a Pan” dessert. What a wonderful variety of silent auction items there were for guests to bid on and then bid against one another. The over 23 mystery bags at $5 each disappeared quickly! Guests did a great job bidding at the Pies and Preserves table, too!

After the dining and bidding guests enjoyed dancing to great music by singing artist, Ann Miner, performing for the first time at Branch #638.

Special and successful accurately describes our Ladies’ Auxiliary’s 24th annual fundraiser. We could not have done it without you! Special thanks and much appreciation to members and businesses who donated and/or collected auction items; bid in the silent auction; made monetary donations, and to the 60 people who bought tickets and attended the event. An extra special thanks with much appreciation to the many volunteers including branch members, L.A. members and non-members who contributed hours and in some cases days to bring together a very enjoyable and fun evening! Thank you so much! We are getting closer to reaching our fundraising goal to replace the outside signs with electronic signs! Thanks a million, from the Ladies’ Auxiliary!
