Abstract

This paper presents the contribution of research carried by LIS departments of Karnataka state

universities to the shodhganga e-theses database. The data for the study was taken from the

shodhganga website under each university in Karnataka. The present study analyzed the year wise

theses, university wise distribution of LIS theses and the leading guides. It has also given the list of all

209 theses which are appeared in shodhganga under each university.

Keywords: Shodhganga, Karnataka, LIS Departments, Theses.

Introduction

In this information explosion era it is difficult for user to identify the right information at the right

time; the same is applicable to the research as well. While selecting a research problem it is difficult

to identify what are the areas researcher has to select and what research has been already done. This is

very difficult task for any researcher. So in this context several electronic theses databases projects

have been undertaken all over the world, its main aim is to avoid the duplication of the research and

widely access the research work for future developments. In India under the aegis of UGC and

INFLIBNET Shodhganga full text electronic theses database has started. It is very useful for the

academic fraternity for their research, and it also avoids the duplication of work.

Brief profile of Shodhganga

Shodhganga is a reservoir of Indian theses and dissertations. It works under the aegis of INFLIBNET

which is an autonomous inter university centre of the UGC. As on 17th April 2018, as many as 375

universities and 14 CFTI’s (Centrally Funded Technical Institutes) signed MOU (Memorandum of

Understanding) with INFLIBNET to participate in Shodhganga project. The full text theses and

dissertations are available to read and download in open access to the academic community

throughout the world. The shodhganga has a collection of 1, 88,973 full text theses and 3900

synopses. UGC has mandated all universities and CFTI’s submission of electronic version of thesis

and dissertations by the researchers in universities with an aim to facilitate open access to Indian

theses and dissertation to the academic community. This would overcome problem of duplication and

poor quality of research.

Objectives

To know the contribution to Shodhganga by the LIS departments of Karnataka State

Universities.

To know the most contributed university in the state to shodhganga.

To know the leading guides in the state universities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The present study covers the 10 state universities which are having Library and Information Science

departments on the basis of doctoral theses available in Shodhgagnga e-thesis database. Out of ten

universities only seven universities are uploaded their theses to the shodhganga, which is also very

less quantity of theses uploaded. Total there are only 209 theses are uploaded by the seven

universities. Those 209 theses are taken for this study.

Methodology

The data was collected from Shodhganga e-theses database by INFLIBNET website

http://shodhganga.inflibnet.ac.in/ , which is a major source of full text doctoral theses those are

submitted by the respective universities.

The above Table 3 shows the leading guides of LIS departments. In this list Prof. C R Karisiddappa is

in the top with 33 theses, and in second Prof. S L Sangam is there with 18 theses, followed by M R

Kumbhar 13, B D Kumbar 9, B S Biradar with 8, Ijari, S R 7, Mallinath Kumbar also with 7 theses,

the list goes like this with descending order.

Findings and Conclusion

The study has emphasized the perspective of the contribution of LIS departments in Karnataka state

universities to shodhganga e-theses database. So far, 209 Ph.D theses were uploaded by the Karnataka

state universities. Good numbers of Ph.D Theses were uploaded by Karnataka University, Dharwad.

Karnataka university has uploaded many well known LIS personalities digitalized theses to the

shodhganga i.e. Ganesh Bhattacharya, Gopinath, M A, I R N Goudar etc. But still universities are not

participating actively in uploading their research productivity to the shodhganga this is not a good

practice. The most importantly there is no uniformity in entering data in shodhganga every university

is following their own format for the same, the format is little bit same but not uniformed and many

typing errors also found in the titles. So the INFLIBNET has to make a mandatory to follow certain

rules or has to publish a manual for the entering data in Shodhganga or if it is there already direct the

universities strictly to follow the same. So it will be easy to access the data and there are no chances

of missing of required information in the search process.
