2 Our Past Experience
What and how should the work be
done? What is my role in safety?
Is what they are doing safe?
This is not my job scope. Why should I correct them?
Don’t be busybody, later I will have
enemies
Uncertain of WSH ownership, lack of confidence and knowledge of WSH

Brainstorming sessions produce measures which are innovative and practical to the worksite
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
1. IN-HOUSE FALL PREVENTION MEASURE FOR WORK AT HEIGHT ACTIVITIES
Workers standing near opening, risk of falling from height
Observation:Workers exposed to falling from height
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
Improvement:Fabrication of in-house mesh protection and fall prevention.

5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
2. REVISING/ SUBSTITUING CONSTRUCTION METHOD TO ELIMINATE HAZARDS
Traditional method of using T10 dowel bars for precast component propping
Push-pull props
Observation:Protruding Precast propping dowel bars poses a hazard
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
2. REVISING/ SUBSTITUING CONSTRUCTION METHOD TO ELIMINATE HAZARDS
Improvement
Revised propping procedure
• Use of Hilti HUS- H bolt instead ofT10 dowel bars.
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
Improvement:
Replaced by HUS-Bolt system •The HUS-H bolt is designed to be
used without any sockets. • It can be straightaway tightened
into the concrete, in a similar fashion to self-tapping screws.
• Use of cordless drill to eliminate electrical hazard and poor cable management
1. Place the flange plate to the correct position as highlighted from the drawings, marked its position and drill accordingly.
2. Place the correct diameter of HUS- H bolt to the hole
3. Tighten the HUS – H bolt using the cordless electrical wrench.
2. REVISING/ SUBSTITUING CONSTRUCTION METHOD TO ELIMINATE HAZARDS
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
3. Administrative measure to minimize possibility of incompatible work
Observation:
Incompatible work between construction and ground level
Improvement
Implementation of flag system with proper barriercadesurrounding the working zone
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
4. Engineering control measure for traffic management
Observation:
More than 2 traffic controllers required to control public crossing over the worksite access
Improvement
Use of remote controlled auto gate with traffic light and audible alarm
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
5. Use of automated wheel washer that eliminate the need of worker
Observation:
At least 2 workers are required for cleaning tyresof construction vehicles and they are exposed to traffic accident.
Improvement
Use of automated wheel washer
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
6. Use of administrative control for traffic and human access
Observation:
Without directional signs and designated parking area, traffic near misses are observed.
Improvement
Traffic directional signs and access demarcation to prevent any possible traffic accident and visitor’s possible entry into work area.
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
7. Use of CCTV to monitor site activitiesObservation:
Unsafe act / condition observed on site and highlighted by Client
Improvement
Use of CCTV monitoring system with smart phone application
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
8. Use of engineering control to clean site access
Observation:
At least 6 workers are required to clean area and they are exposed to traffic accident and respiratory issues
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
8. Use of engineering control to clean site access
20 Minutes
Improvement
Use of modified bobcat
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
9. Use of mechanization for cleaning large areas
Solution:
Mobilise battery operated vacuum machine and only 1 hour is required to clean the large area.
Observation:
Too many workers needed to be deployed to clean multi storeycarpark and they are exposed to dust.
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
10. Use of mechanization for cleaning large areas
Observation:
Insufficient workers to address safety issues observed due to deployed at units for cleaning of completed units
Improvement
Cleaning robots are used that also reduce respiratory related issues.
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
The announcement of the Technical (R&D) department by our Managing Director to look into innovation to carry out construction works which aim to improve productivity by using lesser manpower and using technology to make work carried out in a more safer way.
Initiative to use technology to reduce hazard and increase productivity.
Overview of LHLWong Nam Sin(CEO)
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
- Easier to handle as timber is much lighter than concrete (80% lighter) and steel
- lifting operation made safer - eliminate hotwork activity.
Lian Ho Lee shall continue to propose this alternative construction method which is supported by BCA.
Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) was used for our JTC Launchpad Phase 2 Project
Use of timber for construction
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
Use of technology for safer construction operations
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
Use of technology for safer construction operations
Walkie talkie is like reverse car alarm Using video coupled with alarm would make car reversing even safer
5 Moving Forward: Improvement from Observation
Safety In Lifting Operation:
1. Use of WIFI Surveillance Camera Helmet- worn by signalman- Crane operator has better view of the lifting operation- video stored for any evidence required
2. Use of Audible Signal Alarm during Lifting other than whistle
Helmet with chin strap

6 Advantages of embracing CultureSAFE
01Enhance safety performanceand productivity
02 Site become more self-regulated
03Workers will have a better
sense of belonging
6 Advantages of embracing CultureSAFE
04Project a good image to Clients
05Able to implement open
reporting procedure of unsafe act / condition
06Better prospect
when tendering for a project
6 Advantages of embracing CultureSAFE
EMPLOYEES FEEL THAT THEIR SAFETY CONCERNS BEEN HEARD
EMPLOYEES SEE THAT Top management ARE CONCERNED
FOR THEIR SAFETY AS WELL
SUCCESS OF CULTURE SAFE PROGRAMME
