It’s hard to believe we’re approaching our 47th Annual Production Sale. This is the 33rd sale we’ve held at the ranch. We hosted our first sale jointly with Holden Herefords in 1966 in Great Falls. In one regard, that seems like yesterday. At the same time, 47 years certainly has brought about a lot of change in our society at large, and the cattle industry in particular. Agriculture in general faces much scrutiny and as cattlemen it seems as though we are continually faced with obstacles, most recently the drought that has affected much of our country’s land. I pray that Mother Nature is good to us in the coming years and hope that we are all blessed with and benefit from increasing cattle prices. I still believe there are many good years to come in the field of Agriculture.

We started line-breeding over 66 years ago based on the belief that by maintaining a strong performance line breeding program we could improve the predictability of our cattle and provide a superior product to our customers. We continue to cull our cattle rigorously and select for traits we feel will keep you satisfied and profitable. Our offering this year is a testimony to the aforementioned. We are proud to offer you the top 75% of our 2012 calf crop along with a uniform set of yearling heifers, several young bred cows, and ten pregnant recips due to calve next fall.

The bulls were weaned on September 4th. The group posted an average birth weight of 89 lbs., and an Adj. 205 day weight of 707 lbs. Once in the feedlot, they were fed a mixture of chopped hay, alfalfa sileage, whole corn, oats and a mineral based protein supplement. Performance numbers were right on target again this year and resulted in an ADG of 3.45 lbs. which yielded an average Adj. 365 day weight of 1230 lbs. Following are the average EPDs of this year’s offering: CED(+2.4), BW(+2.6), WW(+51), YW(+83), Milk(+32), M&G(+58), REA(+0.17), Marbling(+0.09), CHB Index($22)

As always, Dr. John Smith, DVM, fertility tested and obtained pelvic and scrotal measurement of all bulls on January 30th. In our continuous effort to offer cattle free of any known genetic defects, we have parent verified, IE tested, and diluter tested the cattle. All are guaranteed free. Videos are available of all sale cattle and can be viewed on our website. Please contact us directly if you’d like to receive a DVD of the videos. The American Hereford Association (AHA) released its first Genomically Enhanced EPD (GE-EPD) in the fall of 2012. This was unprecedented in the U.S Beef Industry because the AHA worked intimately with the science community to develop its own unique GE-EPD. The AHA utilizes a 50K panel along with pedigree and performance information to support all EPD and corresponding accuracies on the animals that are tested. Genomic predictions work very well in the populations that they are discovered from. In other words, the Hereford panel does not work well in making predictions in other breeds, so the AHA GE-EPD are based solely off high accuracy Hereford bulls. Cooper Hereford Ranch has always advocated breed improvement projects and has been a leader in implementing such tools to benefit their program and in turn their customer’s programs. In this catalog, you will notice several herd sires that have been 50K genotyped. These bulls were used for discovery and validation of the GE-EPD. You will also notice a large group of young bulls and heifers in the sale that have GE-EPDs. Cooper Herefords submitted DNA samples of these animals so as to provide their customers with as much information as possible. The GE-EPDs should be used just like conventional EPDs. The only difference is the increased accuracy which will enable you to make more confident selection decisions. The herd at Cooper Hereford Ranch is the result of decades of performance testing. The GE-EPD is just one more tool you can use to manage risk and select your cattle with confidence.
