CALLTO ORDER

Robert Alcorn, President of the Board, called the regular meeting of the Corcoran Unified School District Board of Trustees to order at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Office. TRUSTEES PRESENT/ABSENT Trustees present were Patty Robertson, Bobby Toney, Mary Wadsworth (entered at 6:04) and Robert Alcorn. Trustee Karen Frey was absent. OTHERS PRESENT Others present were Rich Merlo, Pamela Dihel, Steve Berry, Dave Whitmore, Elizabeth Mendoza, Eduardo Ochoa, Keith Airheart, Antonia Stone, Marty Raeber, Amanda Turner, Julia Davila, Sam Ramirez, Valerie Ridings and family, and Donnetta Murray. Trustee Mary Wadsworth entered the meeting. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR PRESENTATION Superintendent Rich Merlo introduced and presented a plaque of appreciation to the District’s Volunteer of the Year, Valerie Ridings. Mrs. Ridings had been nominated for the honor by both Fremont and Mark Twain schools. CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS The Board voted to approve the following consent agenda items:

HIGH SCHOOL REPORT Corcoran High School ASB representative Julia Davila informed the Board that ASB is working on the script for the first Panther News this year. It will be informing the students of what is going on around the school, as well as the world. On February 12, they will be having an Academic Rally for first semester honor roll and principal honor roll students. Preparations are being made for Freshman Orientation.

Different clubs, groups, and sports will have a table to recruit students to their activities. The theater club is having their first play production: Sophistication of Romeo and Juliet. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT Board Priorities/Goals: Mr. Merlo noted that the Board goals need to be updated, along with reviewing of the District’s Vision and Mission. The five Board priorities were adopted in 2009, but have been in the District since 2004. He added that they are appropriate for today, also. The Board and Mr. Merlo discussed having a Board workshop in the near future to work on goals, vision and mission. Apple Award: Mr. Merlo announced that the District had received banners for each District school site to hang proclaiming they are part of an Apple Distinguished District. He added that it is quite an honor. The District has spent a lot of money and had a lot of training in technology. Apple is going to be filming and interviewing the staff. Principals’ Summits: The summits were held in the smaller TLC#3 conference room. The summits show how the sites are doing and proved to be another good learning experience for the administrators. This time they were rather informal and the admins were able to share some of their “not so good” data and the good data. Mr. Merlo said this is a way to learn from each other and he thought it was probably the most productive Principals’ Summit that has been held. BOARD OF TRUSTEE REPORTS Trustee Bobby Toney attended the Summits. He asked about English Learners and their ability to learn English. He feels that if you cannot read English well, then it affects your other subjects. President Robert Alcorn also attended the Summits. He said the administrators were looking at non-negotiables and that every Corcoran student should and could learn. He found it interesting to see the effort that is put forth so all kids can learn and succeed. He noted that he had read a story about schools in another town that were just starting to get some computers for students. He came away from reading that article thinking our District has had technology for so long that you get the impression everyone is where Corcoran is in technology. He congratulated the principals on their hard work and the Apple Distinguished Schools award. He thanked all staff for the good job they are doing for Corcoran kids. Trustee Mary Wadsworth informed the Board that CAST had a meeting with two applications that were approved: one to assist with funds for a Journal ad and one for a bus for Senior Grad Night. CBO REPORT Chief Business Officer Pamela Dihel advised the Board that the District is applying for a grant with San Joaquin Valley air Pollution for four electric vehicles to be used for grounds, maintenance and cafeteria departments. The district would be reimbursed 100% and the electric gators would be used in lieu of gas trucks whenever possible. Mrs. Dihel attended two Governor’s Budget workshops, which gave different perspectives. Governor Brown’s proposed budget reflects stability and growth in education funding. His focus is now on education policy and student performance rather than district solvency. Although revenues are up and the LCFF model is on track, School Services is saying to be cautious and maintain local reserves. CFA REPORT CSEA REPORT SECOND HEARING/ADOPTION OF BP 6152.1 – PLACEMENT IN MATHEMATICS COURSES The Board held the second hearing and approved adoption of Board Policy 6152.1 – Placement in Mathematics Courses. SARC REPORTS APPROVED The Board voted to approve 2014-15 School Accountability Report Cards (SARC Reports) for Bret Harte Elementary School, John C. Fremont Elementary School, Mark Twain Elementary School, John Muir Middle School, Corcoran High School, Kings Lake Education Center, Mission Community Day School and Corcoran Academy. Trustee Wadsworth questioned the percentage of English Learner students showing progress as there appeared to be progress through Mark Twain but then it stayed the same for upper level grades.
