Over the past month or so, it has been my honor and privilege to help start the ball rolling for the formation of a Registered Student Organization (RSO) on the campus of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln called “The Freemasons of UNL”. As of today, a Letter of Intent has been filed and accepted with the student government with 5 student signatures, all Freemasons, and the organization’s faculty advisor, M.W.B. James F. Brown Jr., Professor of Accounting. We have two other UNL faculty lined up who will be secondary advisors to the organization. From the acceptance of the Letter of Intent, the organization has 90 days to file a constitution with the student government. Within 14 days after the constitution is received, a committee from the student government (ASUN) will decide whether the constitution is in good order and the group can meet as an official RSO. Assuming all goes well with the constitution, we hope to have the group approved and meeting as an RSO early spring 2012. It has been many years since there was a student organization comprised of Master Masons on UNL’s campus. In fact, Acacia Fraternity, founded in 1904, was the last to have such a membership requirement and Acacia dropped its Masonic membership requirement in 1933. The Acacia Chapter on UNL’s campus is the oldest existing Acacia Chapter, being the fourth Chapter founded. Recently, Nebraska Chapter has run into hard times, having to rent out the Fraternity’s house due to low membership. In speaking with the national office, they are living once more in their house on Vine Street, but there are currently less than ten active members of Acacia in the house. Hopefully the RSO and Acacia can work together in some way to the benefit of both organizations. I’ve attempted to contact the Chapter Advisor concerning the RSO but I have yet to speak to him. Membership in the RSO will not be limited to Freemasons. It will be open to any student who is interested in learning more about the Masons, their history, the appendant bodies, and, if so motivated, joining the larger Fraternity. Per UNL RSO guidelines, there can be non-student members, though only UNL student members have voting rights and are allowed to hold office. Our current thought is to allow non-student members but require them to be dues paying members of an adult body, either Blue Lodge or Eastern Star. Quite a bit of thought has gone into developing the structure of the organization. While space does not permit me to publish the proposed constitution, I can tell you I’m excited and encouraged by the positive comments I’ve had helping to get the group started. Our founding members hold Masonic memberships in Lincoln, Weeping Water, and Las Vegas, NV. I’ve been privileged to cross paths with them at some point in time, even helping to raise two of them. The benefits of having a student group on campus are enormous! A RSO can sponsor events on campus and have a booth at Big Red Welcome. I’ve been a member of the Grand Lodge’s Public Relations Committee and the Grand Chapter’s Youth Committee when conversation turned to how we can engage Masonic Youth on college campuses across Nebraska. We seem to lose our Youth during the college years and relatively few of them go on to join our adult bodies. Hopefully the RSO will be a place Masonic Youth can congregate and help bridge the gap between the youth groups and adult organizations. We also hope UNL’s RSO can serve as a template for the formation of others at UNO, UNK, Peru State, Wayne State, and Chadron State. Though, assuming RSO requirements are the same from campus to campus, the largest hurdle to overcome will be finding enough college students who are Master Masons to sign the Letter of Intent. My Blue Lodge is in the process of raising one attending Peru State, but that’s only one. If you are a college student or know of a college student who would like more information about “The Freemasons of UNL”, contact myself or chapter advisor M.W.B. James F. SWISHER LODgE U.D. OpERATIONAL IN

AfgHANISTAN

Written by W.B. Patrick Barger, Personal Representative of the Grand Master of Nebraska.

Nebraska Masonry is Alive and Well...in Afghanistan! The travelling men of Nebraska Freemasonry flew that well-known pseudonym to renewed heights in the last few weeks. Swisher Lodge Under Dispensation was open once again in the war-torn country of Afghanistan, half-way around the globe. Acting under dispensation from Most Worshipful Brother Bruce A. Baker, Swisher Lodge opened its doors in Kabul, Afghanistan in early December 2011. The Grand Lodge of Nebraska shipped the famous “Swisher Kit” containing all tools and accessories necessary to conduct a lodge communication to me and all items were put to good use.

As you know, Swisher Lodge was named after Bro. (SSG) Christopher Swisher of Lincoln

Lodge No. 19, killed in Iraq in 2003. Everything we do is dedicated to him.

This lodge formed and I was installed Worshipful Master, WB Ritchie Inns of Cotner Lodge No. 297 as Senior Warden, and Brother Blair Talley of Lancaster Lodge No. 54 as Junior Warden. It was nice to have the top three officers of this lodge be Nebraska Masons, as all three of us are currently stationed at various locations across Afghanistan. The three of us extend our Masonic greetings to all of you.

The lodge currently has fifteen members hailing from all corners of the earth. Besides Nebraska, the Phillipines, Nova Scotia, Texas, Virginia, Germany, Washington, Colorado, and South Dakota are represented.

Since the lodge was formed, we initiated and passed Brother Phil Holguin, a retired Command Sergeant Major and Army Ranger in the U.S. Army. As the lodge continues to grow in numbers, we hope to have enough members to perform the entire Master Mason degree for him. We were very fortunate to have WB Ritchie Inns

in attendance on the evening of the Fellow Craft degree, as he delivers a flawless rendition of the Middle Chamber lecture, as many of you already know. Without Ritchie present to do that, we could not have performed the degree. This, however, is the first time he has delivered the lecture using pictures of the staircase, pillars, and orders of architecture printed on cardstock (there isn’t room in the Swisher Kit to roll up a twenty-foot long canvas or two 18 cubit-high pillars). An ammunition box with a towel on top served as the kneeler for the candidate, and a wooden stand used to hang our Individual Body Armor and helmet served as the square that supported his left elbow. Three more of these stands served as the pedestals for the top three officers as well. Brother Phil Holguin is pictured in the center with WB Patrick Barger on his left and WB Ritchie Inns on his right. Bro. John Gruehl of Virginia is on the far left and Bro. Mark Buechler from South Dakota is on the far right.

I am pleased to report that we have a number of people stationed

here who are interested in joining Masonry. Perhaps it is true that many (if not most) of them will return to their homes and join local lodges. No matter—our very existence in Afghanistan is evidence that Masonry is a worldwide fraternity and they will always remember their first experience in

Masonry was in a Nebraska lodge. Although a few months

ago I came from the West travelling to the East, I am eagerly anticipating going back the other direction soon. God Bless You, our beloved country, and the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.

vETERANS DAY

W.B. James Rider and Bro. Ron Tillman attended the Nov. 11 Veterans Day Program at Lincoln Northeast High School. W.B. Rider commented that he sat next to a WWII Veteran and he could still wear his uniform. The way the Veterans were honored was a wonderful tribute.

W.B. Ralph Beach, W.B. Gene Sibley, and Bro. Ron Tillman erected a new 20 foot flag pole on the corner of the lodge grounds next to 27th street so we are now able to fly the American Flag on the property again.

LADIES NIgHT

North Star Lodge held it annual Ladies Night Oct. 29 with around 75 members and guests in attendance. Loin of the fatted calf with au jus, toad stools and potato casserole were served under the direction and leadership of W.B. Steve Wetzel. Elvis dropped in and swooned the ladies with songs, kisses and leis. W.B. Leland Merrill was presented his 60 year pin by W.M. Keith Brocksmith. W.B. Leland was raised May 23 1951. He commented on how overwhelmed he was when he discovered how many members of his family drove a considerable distance to witness his raising.

BUSINESS MEETINg

The festive board was spread at 6:30 with leftover prime rib, potato casserole and salad. We ate too much. Normal business was conducted. W.M. Keith announced his presentation of the 60 year pin to Bro. Leroy Okeson at the Masonic Home in Plattsmouth earlier in the day. Bro. Leroy was raised Apr. 25, 1951. It was also announced Grand Lodge mailed Bro. Harry Spencer Jr his 60 year pin. Next month, Bro. Arlen Beam will be presented his 60 year pin at the December Business Meeting. A pretty cool mile stone I think. The W.M. also announced a Table Lodge will be called for Dec. 21 at 6:30 p.m. The meal will be a potluck with the Lodge furnishing the meat.

The election of officers for 2012 was held with Bro. David Peck elected to the East, Bro. Brent Elder to the West and W.B. David Sierks to the South. Bro. Allen Plucknett was elected to as Treasurer, W.B. Steve Wetzel was reelected as Secretary and W.B. Evan Haydon was elected as Trustee. I’m sure Bro. David will be contacting some of you about the appointed positions. If asked, please happily serve.

‘BOUND BY A TIEOTHERS kNOW NOT’

Veterans Day was observed Nov. 11 to remember and honor those that served and especially those who sacrificed all in service of our country. I couldn’t help being moved by Solomon Hood, a Civil War Veteran who was commander of a Grand Army of The Republic Post in Pennsylvania who stated: “Few things give stronger ties than common suffering. They who have tramped on long, weary marches together, lay down with the ground for a couch and the sky for a covering, felt the keen pangs of hunger and the burning thrust, faced death together, are bound by a tie others know not.” I think that

sums it up as well as it has ever been explained or has ever been stated.

THANkSgIvINg

Seymour Kittleman was a good man, and he went to Heaven and the Lord Himself greeted him at the pearly gates and asked him if he was hungry. “I could eat,”

said Kittleman. The Lord opened a can of tuna, and they shared it. Kittleman said, “Lord, I am very happy to be in heaven, but ---- I thought I’d get something more than a can of tuna.” The Lord said, “For just two people, it’s too much trouble to cook.”

COMRADESHIp

Ahhh! Yes, it’s that time of year again, Halloween! Which means that it’s time for the DeMolay boys to scream and cry for their mommies. And scream we did (a few of us even fell down).

Eiche boys went to Eagle Raceways this month and, as usual, it was an adventure. We went in as men and left as boys. Although I must hand it to Wyatt and Colton who made a duet out of a Katie Perry song at Scary-oke. Fergie rocked the country music, John belted an oldies and Seth mellowed it out with some R & B. That took more guts than going through the haunted houses!

The reason outings like this are so important is because they build Comradeship and Brotherhood. I feel that comradeship is very important, and not just because it’s one of DeMolay’s Seven Cardinal Virtues.

Even though we go to different schools, live in different parts of the city and are involved in different activities, DeMolay brings our many different personalities together and helps us grow as young men.

Knowing that Tom Osborne has worked with young men getting them to work as a team for years, I asked him what his thoughts on Comradeship were. He said, “We don’t often use the term “comradeship” in athletics, but it is rather synonymous with words such as team chemistry, teamwork, caring about others, etc.

I have found that the team chemistry issue is every bit as important as physical ability and coaching in athletic success. If a team is composed of players seeking individual goals and

individual acclaim with very little thought to others on the team, no matter how talented the team might be, they will not achieve anywhere near what they could achieve if there is a willingness to sacrifice personal goals for team accomplishment. If the players truly care about each other and are united in a common cause, they can accomplish great things. So I guess the term comradeship that you use is certainly appropriate.”

Taking Dr. Osborne’s words to heart, imagine how far we can go in life with our DeMolay brothers by our sides.

BUSINESS MEETINg

Worthy Matron Gwen Hurst-Anderson opened the Nov. 3 meeting with a talk on the symbolism of the number 5. In ancient numerology, 5 contains the numbers 3 and 2. Three is a perfect number therefore symbolizes God; two is an imperfect number and represents human beings. In the number 5 God the perfect and humanity the imperfect are brought together. Therefore the number 5 speaks of reconciliation between God and Humans. The number 5 is shown in many ways in our Order. Worthy Patron Mark Poston welcomed everyone for being in attendance and provided us with a little humor of jokes from a book.

There was a discussion about our by-laws not being approved yet. Since we don’t have the official copy from the Jurisprudence Committee, our dues must remain $10 for 2012.

Sis. Violet Erway, an 83-year member of the Order, will be presented the Imhoff Award at our Dec. 1 meeting. We will have a pot luck dinner at 6:00 p.m. Meat and dessert will be provided; members are to bring side dishes to share. We will also honor our two newest 50 year members, our candidate who will be initiated after the dinner and our new members who were elected by Affiliation. We hope to have as many 50 year members in attendance as possible so we can honor them, too.

TEMpLE BOARD REpORT

Brother John Kirby gave a financial report and budget for 2012 from the Temple Board. Both George Washington Lodge and Martha Washington Chapter will pay rent each month. We elected to pay the rent in full for 2012 so we can help cover ex-penses during the winter months.

W.P. Mark gave a talk on the 10th Landmark of the Order: the right of every member to appeal from the decision of a Subordinate Chapter to the Grand Chapter or its executive head. Conductresses current and past were honored. Those in attendance were: Sisters Paula Beezley, Maxine Buckhart, Charlotte Contatore, Gwen Hurst-Anderson, Betty Kirby, Jeanne Krenk, Janice Nitz, Michelle Smith and Elizabeth Wilhite.

Closing remarks from W.M. Gwen came from a book entitled Flipping Brilliant: “Don’t always follow the crowd, but do believe in the camaraderie of kindred souls.”

CREAMED CHICkEN DINNER BEST HOME

COOkED MEAL!!

Second Saturday of the month December through March, 4:30 to 7:00. After having the meal in November, I’ve dubbed this the BEST HOME COOKED COMFORT FOOD!!! Creamed chicken over mashed potatoes or homemade biscuits, vegetables, tea or coffee for a value price of $6. From this correspondent’s perspective (I’m a picky eater): I loved this meal!! Great on a cold night to have a home cooked meal like Mom used to make! Took a to-go box to my husband, and he gave it a thumb up. Would have been a two thumbs up he said but he was too busy eating!

Hickman Lodge 256Jack Irons, Coorespondent

On Nov. 3, Hickman Lodge No. 256 met for their monthly business meeting and to discuss the fate of the world. Besides conducting degree work and preparing to prove up the lodge this past month, the lodge was also concerned that we would have to deal with the possible upcoming attack by aliens using robotic zombie versions of ourselves. It’s a long story and confusing if you ware just joining us, but let’s just say an alien invasion would have messed with our plans for world domination.

The th ing we feared most, aliens turning our robotic counterparts into zombies ended up working to our advantage. After the aliens took the robots away from their task of building the course for our First Annual Masonic Lunar Dune Buggy Demolition Derby; they began to inspect the robots and worked to figure out exactly what they were. During the course of the examination the robots taught the alien visitors about the virtues of Masonry, including brotherhood and fellowship. Never experiencing these uniquely human traits of compassion and friendship humbled the aliens and changed their entire outlook on the cosmos. Seeing the good that Masonry has done for our planet they decided to return

the robots to the Moon and travel back to their own home planet to start an organization based, in part, on our fraternal organization.

With the alien invasion avoided, the plans for the derby continued and to say that its success was out of this world would be an understatement. Several brothers driving the derby buggies were knocked off the surface of the Moon in crashes but members of HASA had the event covered from the space station and were able to retrieve them safely using our shuttles. Hickman Lodge did win the derby but since they also had the most experience on the Moon the outcome wasn’t exactly a surprise. There is already talk that a Shiner’s club of Lunar Derby Cars is going to start next year and plans for the next annual event are already underway.

Since the alien crisis was avoided and the world safely and completely under his control, W.M. Jarzynka felt that it was best if we held elections during our monthly meeting and leave the post while at the top. After a secret ballot. Bro. James Eggerling was elected to lead Hickman lodge in the next year. Congratulations to him and the other new elected officers. We all looking forward to another non-eventful year in 2012.
