TRACK & FIELD

Highlights: Cougar runners, jumpers, throwers, and vaulters have been busy this spring. The regular season concludes Thursday (May 2) at Southwest Athletic Complex in a meet against Chief Sealth, Roosevelt, and Eastside Catholic. In a successful season so far, the Cougars headed into spring break with appearances at the Nike Eason Invitational and the Shoreline Invitational.

Standouts: Julia Causbie ’21 achieved new personal records in the 400m, the 100m hurdles, and the 300m hurdles, while Maasai Thornton ’22 continues to improve in the 100m, 200m, and long jump.

Pole vaulters Ally Neiders ’22 and Elena Kline ’20 continue to push

one another to repeatedly break the school record in the pole vault. On April 6 it was Ally who broke the record at the Arcadia Invitational, vaulting 12’ 4”. On April 13, it was Elena's turn, vaulting 12’ 6” at the Pasco Invite to break the school record for the fourth time this spring. On April 17, in the last meet before Spring Break, Ally did it again, vaulting to 12’ 8” at Nathan Hale—this season’s fifth new school-record. Lizzy Hayes ’20 also had an impressive month, setting new personal records in both discus and javelin at the Terrance invite on April 13.

Nori Catalano ’19 brings great speed and power, with throws to get turns and run the offense. Alana Ross ’20 and Mia Gerbino ’20 are both steady and reliable players who always do the little things right. Madrona Mailing ’19 is an excellent target downfield, using her height and speed to make challenging catches.

Where to see them: Varsity Ultimate plays three more games this season, starting Thursday (May 2) vs. Lakeside. The following week they wrap up the regular season Monday, May 6, against Eastside Prep and Wednesday, May 8, versus Seattle Waldorf School. JV’s season continues with two more contests: Wednesday, May 1, against Franklin, and versus Northwest on Thursday, May 9.

LACROSSE

Record: 8–4 as of April 30

Highlights: With an exciting 14-9 victory over Bishop Blanchet on April 15, the Cougars are in contention to make the playoffs this season.

Standouts: Isabella Holmes ’19 leads the midfield with 26 goals and 29 draw controls. Harper Muma ’22 is another strong presence in the midfield with 29 draw controls and 22 ground balls. GOLF

On to District and State! Six HNA golfers will compete in the KingCo District tournament on Tuesday, May 14, at Riverbend in Kent. At press time, seven players are competing for the last four spots. This year will showcase a team competition including six players. Janine Surge ’19 and Ana Louie ’21 earned their spots during the Metro League tournament in fall. The remaining five golfers are Grace Whelan ’19, Greta Acarregui ’21, Sabrina Poole ’22, Delaney Dermody ’21, Audrey Donahue ’20, and Olivia Jenne ’20.

The qualifying team members from District will advance to the State Tournament at Hawks Prairie in Lacey on May 21 and 22. Good luck, Cougars!

TENNIS Records: Varsity 11–2 (7–2 Metro) as of April 30. JV 8–1. (As of April 29.)

Highlights: The Cougars finished regular–season matches on April 16 with a win over Bainbridge and a 9-2 record. They started the Metro team tournament (as 3rd seed) Monday with a win over Franklin; their only losses were narrow defeats by Seattle Prep and Lakeside (2–3 against both opponents). The Metro tennis tournament is a great opportunity for rematches against both teams; the Cougars have a great shot at a Metro title this year.
