COUNTERPARTS

The story is developed in the streets of Dublin and

it is a critique of Dubliner society of that time.

The author put the characters in different

situations in order to show their moral

characteristics.

These situations exposed many forms of human

disturbances including: frustration, self-

identification, human unfullfillment and the

struggle between the classes.

The story’s main character is the typical Dubliner

with a useless job and a strong need for a drink at

the local bar.

In the story, it seems that there is a definite order

of social classes, and higher classes try to make

lower classes life worse than they already are.

It can be said that Joyce is trying to make the

reader understand that Dublin is a horrible place

and its inhabitants are overshadowed by its

terrible existence.
