THE MESSIAH On Sunday the 29th November the Senior Choir had the amazing opportunity to sing at the prestigious and
world famous Royal Albert Hall. We spent 8 weeks learning 3 movements of Handel’s famous Messiah, and
joined with 1500 pupils from all over the country (and even some from Italy!) to sing the whole piece. It was an
incredible experience to sing such fantastic music with a professional orchestra and 4 professional solo singers.
The audience was so large they almost sold out of tickets! We hope to be able to return next year and sing all
12 pieces.

Christmas Markets Trips
The Modern Foreign Languages Department would really like to thank you for your support with the decision to
postpone the Aachen and Brussels Christmas Market Trips. We have suggested a new date to the Travel
Company / Eurostar and will be sending out revised letters in the next week. The focus of each trip will have to
change but we will do our utmost to ensure that both trips are successful in their goals. There are still a couple of
places available on the Aachen trip, so please contact me as soon as possible to secure your child’s place if you are
interested.
GCSE groups
GCSE groups (all Year 10 pupils learning a language) will be beginning their first written Controlled Assessment this
week. Lingo Lab (Tuesday 4pm – 5pm) is available for drop in sessions for pupils!
The Facts:
Writing 1 = 15% of their overall
GCSE.
For 2 weeks in their lesson time,
they will be preparing and learning
an essay based on the unit of work
undertaken since September.
Friday 11th December = 1 hour
exam where pupils will be expected
to “write up” the final version of
their essay.
What can they do at home?
Pupils are allowed to take home
copies of what they have prepared
in class. They can practise writing
out their essay from memory. Say-
ing it out loud can also help them
memorise sections, alongside the
writing practise.
WELL DONE YUSUF
Yusuf Poleya from Year 10 is currently wearing a
special pin on his blazer – it was awarded to him by the
Mayor in a ceremony recently. Yusuf stopped to help
clear up an accident on the Wandsworth Road and has
been rewarded for his sense of civic duty!
Thank you Yusuf for displaying so may of the Boling-
broke values when you are in the community.

LIBRARY & CAREERS NEWS
HELP OUR PUPILS TO EXPERIENCE THE WORLD OF WORK.
There are 3 ways you can support the Careers programme in school for 2016.
Careers day: Do you have an interesting career to speak to the pupils about? Can you spare 30 minutes or a
day to help introduce our pupils to the different careers available? Our careers days this year will be held on
Monday 18th July and we are looking for a range of speakers to cover all job sectors. If you cannot make this
date but think the pupils would be interested in your career let me know and we can arrange another oppor-
tunity for you to meet the pupils.
Work shadowing: We are looking for work shadowing placements for year 10 pupils. This will be a 10
week programme starting on Friday 4th March in our Duke of Edinburgh time 2pm – 4pm running once a week
on Fridays. We need placements for a group of pupils who we think will benefit from spending time in the
workplace.
Can you offer a place or do you know a local business that can?
Work Experience: When the class of 2019 return in September 2016 to start year 11 they will all be taking
part in a week of work experience. We are looking for work experience placements for all our pupils.
The compulsory work experience week will start on Monday 5th September.
Pupils will be able to arrange 2 weeks starting the on Tuesday 30th August if they wish
Can you offer a place or do you know an organisation that can?
If you are able to help with any aspect of the careers programme please contact
[email protected] for more information.
IN THE LIBRARY:
“Lord Loss” – Darren Shan
This is the first in the Demonata series. We meet
Grubbs Grady, son of chess obsessed parents, but
little does he know that this harmless game is the
key to the family secret. Grubbs learns three
things as he battles Lord Loss and his minions: the
world is vicious, magic is possible and demons are
real! This book has it all, werewolves, demons,
battles and the most exciting game of chess ever
written down– once you read this book you’ll be
hooked.
I would recommend this book to all pupils who
want to read a gory horror filled book (and then
nine more)!
LIBRARY CHRISTMAS COMPETITION
Competition: Storyboard a different ending to ‘The
Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’.
E.g. Does Aslan die? Does the Witch convert to being
good? Does Edmund become High King?
Success Criteria:
Must be colourful
Must be creative
Must have your name and CIVITAS on it
Any writing must be clear and be the correct
spelling
Deadline: 14th of December 4pm.
Where: Storyboard outlines available from the Li-
brary, hand in to Ms Jones or Ms Robinson.
Prize: A book of your choosing

BATTLEFIELDS TRIP
NOVEMBER 2015
On Friday 13th November 2015, 41 Bolingbroke Academy pupils visited Belgium for the day. After an early 4.15am
start pupils arrived at their first site, the Yorkshire Trench, where pupils walked through the preserved trenches.
This was followed by a visit to Tyne Cot Cemetery where pupils paid their respects to those who fought and lost
their lives in World War One. We held a 2 minute silence at the memorial before exploring the cemetery. Many
pupils found people with their surnames who fought and died in WW1.
We had lunch before making our final stop at the Passchendale Museum. Pupils experienced the preserved trench-
es as well as the replica underground dug out system at the museum. We spent over an hour exploring the exhib-
its! After this we stopped in central Ypres. We walked through the Menin Gate and observed the names of the
fallen on the walls before exploring the town centre. Our final stop was at the infamous Leonidas chocolate shop
where pupils were treated to discounts and deals which resulted in a very happy and overly excited group of young
people! We returned to school at 6.30pm, an hour and a half ahead of schedule! It was a long day but the pupils
were insightful and engaged throughout and were a credit to Bolingbroke Academy.
If you are in Year 8, you will have the opportunity to go on the same trip when you are in Year 9. Look out for
more information in January 2016!

MATHS CORNER
News from Maths this fortnight
I can’t believe it’s nearly assessment week already! Pupils have lots of revision material to support them with
their exams. All classes have at least two papers to complete. We will be including more information about how
grades are calculated from the assessments in the final Courageous Hound of the term.
We regret to announce that Mr Horley has left Bolingbroke Academy due to an unexpected change in circum-
stances. In his short time with us, he contributed a great deal to the department and we are sad to see him go.
Ms Edis and I will be writing again to all parents whose children have been affected, and look forward to sharing
details about our new teacher in that letter next week.
Top Tip from Team Maths
As promised in the last edition of Maths Corner, our first top tip for sup-
porting pupils at home is to watch out for errors with equals! The “=” sign
should only be used if the statements on both sides are equivalent. It
shouldn’t just be used to mean “makes the answer”, with lots of steps
written out in a line. If you want to write a new calculation, use a new line!
Parent Puzzle 6
We had lots of entries to the “10,000th day” puzzle
but unfortunately nobody correctly calculated
Chris’s birthday, which is 24th June 1988. This half
term’s competition is therefore wide open! We will
have a bumper Christmas puzzle, to keep you busy
over the holidays, in our next edition. For now,
here’s a little puzzle to whet your appetite…
On the 1st day of Christmas, my true love gave to
me a partridge in a pear tree. (1 present)
On the 2nd day of Christmas, my true love gave to
me 2 turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. (3
presents altogether)
On the 3rd day of Christmas, my true love gave to
me 3 French hens, 2 turtle doves and a partridge in
a pear tree. (6 presents altogether)
So by day 3, I have been given 1+3+6=10 pre-
sents. How many will I have after the 12th
day of Christmas??
E-mail your solutions to this week’s parent puzzle to
r.donaldson@arkbolingbrokeacademy. Each correct
answer goes into the half termly draw to win maths
equipment for your child (and a treat for you!)
Manga High – star performers
We’ve won our third Fai-To! These are intense days of head-
to-head competitions between pupils from another school. It
was our closest contest so far – well done!
We improved our rankings in November, finishing in a respect-
able 41st place for the UK competition. We are currently in
61st so need lots of pupils to use the chance to do online revi-
sion to boost both their exam scores and our position in the
competition.
Well done to our top performers over the last 30 days. I’m
pleased to see some new names on the list:
Yan MCKEEVER Moad KCHIOUR
Bedr ABDULWAHAB Lucca DA SILVA
Siham DINO BEDRY Sam ETTA
Joel ROONEY Louie HEARN
Lucas KOBLER Dylan SCOTT
Pupils can log in at www.mangahigh.com. The school ID is
263860. All individual log in details should be written in planners!
Times Table of the Week…
We’ll re-launch Times Table Rockstars after the holidays. We are
aware that there have been some issues with logins for
www.ttrockstars.com – these will be rectified in time for the New

YEAR 9 FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT AT SOUTHFIELDS BY MR JONES
Thursday was the year 9 boys chance to pit their wits against all the other school in the borough in the
Wandsworth Schools 6-a-side football tournament. BBA took two teams along, and both teams put in a strong
effort.
The ‘A’ team played group fixtures against St Cecelia’s, Southfields, Graveney and Harris Battersea, winning
three and losing one. The ’B’ team played group fixtures against Southside, Ernest Bevin, St Cecelia’s, Ark Put-
ney and Graveney, winning two and losing three.
The ’A’ team went through to the Semi-finals after finishing second in their group, where they played St Ce-
celia’s ‘A’ team. After a close physical encounter where Bolingbroke took the lead, St Cecelia’s ran out 2-1
victors and went through to the final.
Bolingbroke players demonstrated great attitudes, effort levels and there were some exceptional performances
all round.
YEAR 10 NETBALL TOURNAMENT AT BURTNWOOD SCHOOL BY MS LUETCHFORD
On the 16th November the year 10 netball team played their first tournament of the year. The girls had a fan-
tastic start winning their first game against Southfields 5-0. They then had an equally impressive game against
Burtnwood, winning 7-0. Chestnut Grove fought hard to win the next game and Saint Cecilias only narrowly
won by one goal.
Overall the girl’s put in a great effort in all their matches and really enjoyed the evening.

U13 GIRLS RUGBY TEAM IMPRESS AT RFU FESTIVAL MR JONES
12 year 7 and 8 girls went along to Streatham & Croydon
RFC along with 12 other schools to play in the Surrey
Schools Rugby Festival. The day began with RFU coaches
carrying out warm-up sessions with the girls, followed by
teachers taking girls through some rugby specific training
which focused on passing and kicking. The girls then played
matches against 5 different schools including St Bedes,
Collingwood, Streatham School and Kingsdale.
After some tough matches with lots of super rugby being
demonstrated the girls came out victorious in all 5 of their
games. Super efforts and performances all-round, and some
potential Ladies rugby stars of the future!

YEAR 7 & 8 AGAINST CHESTNUT GROVE
On Wednesday 25th November the Year 7 and 8 teams both played against Chestnut Grove. Both teams put in
an excellent performance. The Year 7s only just missed out on a win by two goals. The final score was 6-8.
The year 8 team managed to win their game with a strong and confident lead. The final score was 7-11. Thank
you to all the people that came to support, I know it really helps motivate the girls.
DANCE COMPETITION
By Ms Luetchford
On Tuesday 27th November the dance team made it to their first ever competition. They had been working
hard on their dance since the start of September during enrichment times and also practicing at home. The
competition was held at Southfields Academy. It was a brilliant evening and fantastic to see all the talent
Wandsworth has to offer. The girls had a fantastic time at the competition and all acted very professionally
during rehearsals and their live performance.
Along with the dance, a short piece of writing needed to be included to announce the group. This was the par-
agraph that was read before the dance:
The piece was choreographed by a year 9 student, Norah Dankwah. The song askes who we are and this is us
showing we are strong, independent women.
This dance has made us become more confident when performing and has given us the opportunity to express
our inner selves. We hope you like it!
Overall the girls came 3rd in the competition and should be very proud of all their efforts. Thank you to every-
one who came to support, they really appreciated it.
