Friday 29th January
Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
This week has been a very special week at Bolingbroke as Ms Sherman and all the teachers in the MFL
department have helped us to celebrate the wonderful array of languages around the world and even closer
to home in Bolingbroke. We have sampled fabulous food, entertainment and had some very special guests.
Last Friday there was a fantastic turn out for the Bugsy Malone auditions. Over 100 pupils auditioned and
really lived up to the Bolingbroke values of being courageous, brave and taking opportunities when they are
presented. The lucky cast list is below but everyone should be incredibly proud of what they achieved. I
would like to thank Ms Breckon, the Music Team, Mr Kalorkoti and Ms Tibbetts who have already done a
wonderful job at bringing such passion and enthusiasm to the set. We can't wait to see rehearsals begin and
we look forward to seeing the performance in the Summer Term. Tickets will be on WisePay very soon and
I suggest getting them early as this is going to be a sell out!
BUGSY MALONE: FULL CAST LIST IS OUT! Thank you so much to all who auditioned on Friday; we were so impressed by all the talent. Unfortunately,
due to the high number of auditionees and space restrictions on the stage, we are unable to take on everyone
who auditioned to be in the cast.
However, there are lots of other ways you can be involved with the show – if you are interested in being part
of the backstage team, front of house, costume/make up or scenery design then please let Miss Breckon or Mr
Kalorkoti know ASAP! Scripts will be available to collect from the Music office from Friday onwards.

LANGUAGES WEEK
MONDAY 25TH - FRIDAY 29TH JANIARY We have had a fantastic week celebrating languages spoken at Bolingbroke and beyond. It kicked off last Friday with
our MFL Assembly; we were fortunate enough to hear a Year 7 group of pupils perform Samba with Ms Breckon
which was absolutely fantastic. They only had 2 weeks to put the piece together and it really made us feel like we
were at Carnival in Rio!
We celebrated a variety of cultural features for Bolingbroke pupils – huge thanks to the following pupils who really
were so brave in speaking in Assembly:
Salma
Wisal
Ariana
Viva
Jessica
Atticus
Louis
Nick
Ruth
Carmen from Ilusion Flamenca performed Flamenco for us; she got pupils clapping in time and shouting “olé"!
The atmosphere she created was very enjoyable!
On Monday, the MFL department met three teachers from Philip
Melanchthon Gymnasium, Meine (near Brunswick), including their
Headteacher, Head of English and English Teacher. They then came to
Bolingbroke on Tuesday, where they had a tour of the school, visited
Year 10 German GCSE in reading group and had lunch with us. We
are forming a partnership with this school so watch this space for
further developments (including trip opportunities and projects).
Ms Crabtree and her team produced a fantastic menu for us on Tuesday, featuring “Tartiflette”. It was
absolutely delicious and gave pupils a real opportunity to sample food from the Savoyard region of France.

Wednesday morning saw team EAL (Ms Smyth and Ms Sherman), alongside the other languages teachers (Ms Jo-
seph and Ms Konneradt) enjoy a tasty selection of breakfast from across the globe. Pupils were keen to share
their stories of where they were born, what language they speak at home and what family they still have abroad
over a croissant and some juice.
On Thursday, Baking Club became it’s very own “La Chandeleur”. Ms Mayotte and Ms Gann did a grand job of
hosting this event. Pupils were given a French version of the crêpe recipe and many followed it perfectly. Ms Kon-
neradt was our star crêpe thrower with Lauren and Hettie having a good go!
Following this event, we had Community Languages Information Evening to discuss pupils in Years 9 and 10
wanting to take a language in their mother tongue. If for any reason, you were unable to attend the event and
would like the resources to be sent out, please email [email protected].
The final event held in Languages Week was on Friday morning for the pupils in Year 10 studying French. Guest
speakers came from Bouygues UK to present a national sustainability competition to pupils. In groups, pupils will
need to prepare an engaging presentation about what they do to be sustainable. Openings and endings are to be
conducted in French and pupils are encouraged to be as creative as possible. We look forward to sharing more on
this with you!
Thank you so much to all those who have both supported and participated in Languages Week. We look forward
to doing even more next year!

DUKE OF EDINBURGH TUTORING: MATHS AT HONEYWELL
By Miss Donaldson
This D of E Cycle, a group of year 10 pupils has been working with a group of year 6 pupils at Honeywell Junior
School. This was the brainchild of Mr Horley, who was really keen to give pupils the experience of Maths from the
other side of the classroom – after all, explaining how to do Maths helps us to understand Maths better ourselves!.
The pupils have planned and delivered topics on a range of subjects – from place value to angles – making sure that
the sessions were purposeful, engaging and, most of all, fun! They’ve really impressed with their enthusiasm for the
subject, and have made sure that the pupils in their group feel really confident with the Maths that they cover. I’ve
really enjoyed watching them grow as teachers over the past few weeks – even overhearing some comments that
wouldn’t be out of place from a qualified teacher in the classroom.
Hilly Bryde, Maths co-ordinator at Honeywell, has been really pleased with the project:
Maths Club has been running since September and has been a real success. Year 10 from The Bolingbroke Academy has
been coming to Honeywell School to deliver fun maths activities supporting the year 6 curriculum. The year 6 children really
look forward to Maths Club every week. Not only is it fun for them but it also supports their current topic; it increases their
confidence too.
“I loved it, I learnt about angles and the game was so much fun" said one pupil after a session.
Well done to all of our Year 10 tutors – you have been a credit to Bolingbroke Academy and real role models as
Mathematicians.
Taking part in Maths Tutoring at Honeywell were: Sophie Alger, Ahmed Ali, Adem Amellal, Sasha Authier-Labille,
Rosie Bishop, Dylan Bowles, Amin Egal, Ariana Farmanfarmaian, Sadag Ilyas, Saad Kchiouar, Artur Kergall, Theo
Rooney, Alexa Scutt-Thomson, Kaydena Smith and Harry Ward.
ENRICHMENT & DUKE OF EDINBURGH
The last day for Enrichment for this cycle is Thursday 4th February.
Next week pupils will be given the opportunity to pick their new enrichment choices. There will be lots on offer
so pick carefully. We have so many amazing enrichments whether it be sport, music or cooking there really is
something for everyone and it’s a great opportunity to try something new!
As well as changes to the Enrichment cycle we also have a new Duke of Edinburgh cycle that will start on Friday
4th March.

MATHS CORNER 9
News from Maths this fortnight
Our Key Stage Three Pupils have all been working very hard on geometry this term. We revisit geometry every
Spring in order for pupils to build up their portfolio of skills – including angle rules and constructions. It’s been
great to walk into lessons and see how their confidence has grown, with our year 9s now tackling some really
complex problems.
Year 10 have covered a real variety of topics – from rearranging formulae to representing inequalities. I’ve been
particularly impressed by their mastery of vectors. This was a topic I myself did not enjoy at school but their
enthusiasm has been infectious and it has been a really positive week for both staff and pupils.
As this is a short term, most pupils will be sitting their post-learning assessments right at the end of assessment
week or the beginning of review week to give them time to cover all of their new learning. Good luck to all our
pupils!
Manga High – star performers
We’re steadily improving our position in the UK rank-
ings, moving from 88th to 59th in the past two weeks.
However, we’re a long way from our goal to be in the
top 10. Please encourage your children to get involved
– it will boost their own learning and support Boling-
broke in the UK competition
Well done to our top performers over the last 30 days.
We’ve got representatives from years 7, 8 and 10 in this
list…can year 9 up their game in time for the next edi-
tion of the Courageous Hound?!

be written in planners! Parent Puzzle 9
Well done to Susan Hoult – who not only got the
correct answer to last fortnight’s puzzle (97) but
also replied in the speediest time ever for a Par-
ent Puzzle! Here’s another quick puzzle……
I am a special parallelogram. My diagonals
cross at right angles but none of my interi-
or angles are right angles. What am I?
E-mail your solutions to this week’s parent puzzle to
r.donaldson@arkbolingbrokeacademy. Each correct
answer goes into the half termly draw to win maths
equipment for your child (and a treat for you!)
Times Table of the Week…
We’re pleased to announce that log in details have
been updated and all pupils can now log in to
www.ttrockstars.com to either practise on their own
in the “studio” or compete with pupils across the
country at “festivals”. Parents are encouraged to
have a go too – it’s addictive! Have fun!
Top Tip from Team Maths: REVISION
With assessment week comes the inevitable pre-
test revision. Lots of pupils find revision intimidat-
ing – particularly because learning in maths is cu-
mulative and so they need to remember everything
they’ve ever learned! Here are our top tips for
making revision stress free:
Little and often is best. Can your child do
twenty minutes before and after school?
Don’t just read notes – children need to
practise! They can ask their teacher for
practice sheets or look on websites such as
BBC Bitesize or Khan Academy
They should try and achieve a balance be-
tween building confidence with basic prac-
tice and getting used to challenging or unfa-
miliar questions. They can treat it like a
work out – hard questions first, when their
brains are fresh, and then finish on some
confidence-boosting easy questions.

NETBALL FOCUS
Well done to the year 7 team who only
narrowly missed out on a win by one
point. The final score war 4 -5 to Saint
John Bosco School. The team played really
well and have improved a great deal
throughout this league.
The year 8 team managed to come away with a
win against Saint John Bosco. They played a
fantastic match to the end and kept their spirits
high even when they were behind. Next week
they will be playing a tournament to finish the

MEDALS
Bolingbroke ‘s year 7 & 8 Sports Hall Athletics team went to Ernest Bevin to take on the rest of the
Borough in the Wandsworth Schools Sports Hall Athletics Championships. 10 schools competed in a
range of sprint, throw and Jump activities.
There were some outstanding performances from both teams and individuals in the year 8 girls and
boys teams, with wins in the Paarlauf relay race. But it was the year 7 girls and boys that pushed for
glory. Individual victories in the Vertical Jump and Individual 2 lap sprint from promising young athlete
Amir Sultan-Edwards and team wins in the Paarlauf and 4x2lap relay saw the Year 7 Girls take silver
overall, and the year 7 boys took bronze overall.
A great day with great performances and in a great atmosphere. Well done team!

BOLINGBROKE GIRLS REPRESENT WANDSWORTH AND GO THROUGH
TO 2ND ROUND OF THE LONDON YOUTH GAMES HANDBALL FINALS!
By Mr Jones Tuesday afternoon saw the first round of the London Youth Games Girls Handball tournament take place in
which Bolingbroke were representing Wandsworth at both U13 & U15 level. Bolingbroke welcomed Chelsea
Academy to our ‘patch’ where the girls were waiting and ready to go.
Both handball teams were made up of Netball and footballers with a few ringers pulled in! This proved to be
an advantage for Bolingbroke as the skills, movements and tactics where easier to pick up.
Game 1 saw the U13 fixture take place. Bolingbroke started off at a higher intensity than Chelsea, and this was
maintained throughout the game with Bolingbroke running out comfortable 15-1 winners. Comfortable
winner’s maybe, but that was due to the attitudes and intensity levels with which the girls played. They gave
Chelsea no time on the ball and were precise and clinical in possession. Great performances all round!
Game 2 saw a tougher test take place. An ‘EPIC’ match in the end which saw the two teams go blow for blow
for the full game. The full time score was a thrilling 7-7 which then took the game into extra-time. The final 2
minutes of the game saw Bolingbroke’s superior fitness and experience take over, and with 2 unanswered
goals, Bolingbroke ended up 9-7 winners! Again, super performances all round!
Bring on round 2!
YEAR 7S GIRLS FOOTBALL VS GRAVENEY
By Mr Brooks
Year 7 Girls Football had their first fixture of the year against Graveney on their lovely astroturf. The girls
started brightly, our strike partnership of Sophie Howarth and Etta Sam causing Graveney problems. A
slick passing move by Graveney led to a goal, quickly followed by another and we trailed by two after 15
minutes. The introduction of Misti Wright into defence solidified us and the team began to circulate the ball
well, building some great attacks. Fardowsa Ade and Emily Dzubiev added energy through our midfield
with Poppy Ward and Georgia Maddocks flying up and down the wings. Ella Howarth commanded well
from goal showing great composure on the ball. A great move between our front 3 triangle of Sophie
Howarth and Molly Cook resulted in space for Etta Sam to take a shot, her powerful volley struck the
crossbar but we were denied a goal. We were not to be down for long as Sophie created herself a chance to
score and took her opportunity with composure. A great fixture and performance from the girls despite the 2
-1 loss with the score line not reflecting our performance.
Year 8 Boys Football vs Southfields
Year 8 took on Southfields in their first fixture since the Christmas break. There was a new look to the team
with a number of new players making their debuts. We were on wide, 4G pitch so the game we expected was
to be expansive and fast paced which is exactly how the game begun. Both teams circulated the ball with confi-
dence with a lot of players taking on defenders with some great footwork. Debutant Addawe Ali was a con-
stant menace on the left wing with his pace and trickery winning us a penalty that he also converted. Despite a
number of fine individual performances from Sunny Balogun, David de Coulon and Eddie Cornwall-
Jones we suffered a defeat.
