How to Navigate MAT156 Welcome to MAT156, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers I. This course will not only focus on improving your mathematics skills, but will also provide you the opportunity to develop and write a structured lesson plan consistent with state standards. Online instruction for the mathematics will be through a program called Course Compass, which is aligned with the textbook. This software provides multiple Homework Sets and Sample Tests to gain mastery of the material prior to online Chapter Tests. MAT156 will focus on Chapters 1 through 6 of the text. MAT156 has five major components upon which your grade will be determined: Chapter Tests, a Research Project, Lesson grades K-3, a mandatory Saturday Discussion Group, and a Final Exam. There is no Midterm Exam for this course. You will develop critical listening skills during our discussion group, which will meet Saturday of Week 11. For many of you this may be the first time you will work with a room full of future elementary teachers! It will be important for you to both provide and accept constructive criticism. You will need to be extremely professional in the development, display and presentation of your work. Every item should be neatly typed and should exhibit proper grammar. When you make copies for the class, please make sure they are of good quality. You will leave this course with a collection of lesson plans from your peers. MAT156 is a unique methods course, which gives the student a chance to improve mathematical and lesson writing skills and exchange ideas with fellow students. I look forward to working with you.

How to Prepare For and Take a Chapter Test

Both MAT 156 and MAT 157 use the same textbook. Chapters 1-6 are covered in MAT 156 and chapters 7-12 are covered in MAT 157. The textbook aligns with Course Compass, thus you will find the above mentioned chapters there as well. You will use CourseCompass for all homework, sample tests, and chapter tests. In general, each chapter consists of suggested homework, a sample test, and a test based on performance objectives within the chapter. Specific objectives are listed with each CourseCompass problem. The suggested homework problems will prepare you for the sample test, which will in turn prepare you for the chapter test. When completing homework on-line, CourseCompass offers various help features. Students are able to “View an Example” of a homework problem as well as asking the program to “Help Me Solve This”. Selected problems may offer a video to clarify instruction. Each homework problem on- line is also matched with corresponding textbook pages. Students are encouraged to utilize the Tutoring Center at Rio if further explanation of an objective is needed. Instructor input is also available. Students who are searching for additional opportunities to study objectives may use the text book. Examples and selected homework with answers in the back of the text may be used to enhance concept mastery. Upon completion of the homework, you should be adequately prepared to take the sample test for the chapter. Both the homework and the sample test have unlimited access and are not part of your course grade. The sample test provides a focus on the chapter test objectives. Each chapter test may be taken twice and the higher of the two scores will be recorded. Each chapter test is worth 100 possible points. All of the above (homework, sample test, and chapter test) must be accessed via your home page in CourseCompass. Online tests are immediately graded and the scores are electronically recorded. Your instructor will have access to your scores and will transfer them into the RioLearn Gradebook. You are required to use the same Username and Password for CourseCompass as for RioLearn for this process to work as intended. Tech-support at Rio Salado is available should you encounter technological difficulties.

How to Prepare For and Complete the Research Project Students in MAT 156 must complete and submit a Research Project on Madeline Hunter by Monday of Week 4. Below you will find the questions you must answer while conducting your research. Copy and paste the ten questions into a word document, providing answers after each question. Attach the completed project to an email and send it to your instructor via RioLearn. The Research Project is worth a possible 400 points. Be reminded that this project is expected to be of collegiate level. This Research Project provides you with the framework you will use to write future lesson plans for this course as well as MAT 157.

Consider the following scenario for question 8: Teacher B was writing a lesson plan for her 3rd Grade class: Strand 4: Geometry and Measurement Concept 4: Measurement PO 5: Measure and calculate the perimeter of 2-dimensional figures.

The students used string, rulers, and yardsticks to measure the perimeter of a variety of 2-dimensional figures. The teacher’s lesson plan indicated that her closure was to ask the students to clean up their work-stations, putting away the materials used for her lesson.

above lesson. As Teacher B’s mentor teacher, help her write a new closure to be used for this lesson.

How to Prepare for and Create a Lesson

Both MAT156 and MAT157 require you to write lesson plans. MAT156 requires a single lesson plan for grades K-3 (due Monday of Week 8). MAT157 requires two lesson plans, one lesson plan for grades 4-6 (due Monday of Week 4), and a second lesson plan for grades 7-8 (due Monday of Week 8). Each lesson plan will be developed utilizing Madeline Hunter’s Essential Elements of Instruction. Students in MAT156 have recently completed a research project investigating Madeline Hunter’s approach. MAT157 students may wish to Google this to refresh their knowledge. For each lesson, you will first create a fictitious class of students with unique demographics as listed below, around whom your lesson will be designed. Secondly, you will choose a grade-level appropriate performance objective from the state mathematics standards. You may assume that your fictitious students possess the prerequisite math skills necessary to learn your lesson’s selected performance objective. For instance, if your performance objective focuses on the addition of fractions, you may assume that your students are already able to add whole numbers. A well-written lesson will center in on the mastery of your selected performance objective.

Each written lesson plan must:

You will then save your completed lesson plan (as a .doc), and send it to the instructor as an attachment to an email. The instructor will evaluate your lesson plan and will email you with comments. Students should use these comments to improve the presentation of their lesson plan. Lessons presented at the Saturday Discussion Group should be of high quality, thus students should allow the time and attention necessary to develop such a lesson. By asking you to write a lesson, you will see the connection between the state standards and a solid mathematics lesson, as well as having the opportunity to share your lesson with your peers. How to Prepare for the Saturday Discussion Group

Presentation of Your Lesson

This course has a Discussion Group meeting on Saturday of Week 11. Attendance is required by all students. The meeting will be held at a Rio Salado site in Tempe, Arizona. Exact location will be communicated by the instructor prior to the meeting. Plan to attend from approximately 8am to 4pm. See agenda below. This agenda may be adjusted due to class size, etc. Students are expected to be in attendance for the entire day. The Saturday Discussion Group will center on the presentation of a lesson plan to your peers, as well as a team of instructors, for a specific grade level. MAT 156 students will present the grade K-3 lesson, scheduled for submission Week 8. MAT 157 students will present the grade 7-8 lesson, scheduled for submission Week 8. This is an opportunity to share written lessons with each other and to gain feedback on your lesson’s presentation. Attendees will leave with a collection of all lessons presented. Hopefully, this collection will be of value to you for future classroom use. Early in the day, a demonstration lesson will be offered by one of the instructors to model how to present a condensed version of your lesson to your peers. A critique of your lesson’s presentation will be communicated by one of the instructors present. Points will be earned based on the quality of the lesson as well as its presentation. Refer to following page. Students will need to supply for each student in our class a copy of your lesson plan, a copy of your lesson’s handout, and a sample of your manipulative if other than those provided with the course.

How to Prepare for and Take the Final Exam for MAT 156

The focus of the Final Exam is Chapters 1-6. Recall that the Final Exam determines 40% of your course grade. Success on this exam depends on mastery of the review found within CourseCompass. The review can be accessed under the Study Plan on your course home page. It is suggested that you use this as a practice test. Please be aware that multiple attempts of the review are allowed for mastery of objectives. The Final Exam is to be taken in person at a Rio Salado testing site or arranged for by proctor. If you are taking the Final Exam at a Rio Salado Testing Site call ahead for location and hours of operation. If you are planning to take the Final Exam by proctor it is strongly suggested that these arrangements be made week one of the course. Contact Rio Salado Testing to make necessary provisions. The Final Exam is a multiple-choice test. There is no partial credit. You are not allowed to bring notes or any support materials with you to use during the test.
