Requirements
CAE Eligibility Requirements 1. Currently employed, or have been within the past 5 years, by a qualifying nonprofit
organization or association management company.
2. A bachelor’s degree or qualifying work experience equivalent. (Applicants without a
qualifying degree must submit an additional 8t years of professional work
equivalence to qualify to take the exam. Each year of completed undergraduate
studies may be substituted for 2 years of professional experience.)

bachelor’s degree; 5 years experience at a staff level with a bachelor’s degree).
4. Completion of 100 hours of broad-based qualifying professional development activities
within the last five years.
5. A signed attestation to uphold ASAE’s Standards of Conduct and to disclose any
felony convictions.
New CAE Eligibility Opportunity
• In response to the changing landscape of employment in association management, the CAE
Commission determined that an alternate pathway should be provided to the employment
experience requirements.
• 2-tier alternative to the current employment experience requirement:
– “Ten years paid service as an employee, independent contractor, or consultant who has
demonstrated professional involvement within the association community by providing
services as defined by the CAE exam content outline OR
– Five years of such service if substantially all of their work is devoted solely to qualifying
organizations.”

CAE Exam Update• Every 5 years ASAE conducts a job analysis to ensure that the CAE Exam
is compatible with industry best practices and updates the exam
accordingly.
• May 1, 2015, was the first exam using the updated job analysis information.
• The Domain Content Outline, CAE Study Guide, Professional Practices
book and Forum CAE Study Course have been updated to reflect the
changes.

Who Administers the CAE Program?
• ASAE administers the examination under the direction of a 14-
member CAE Commission, which provides the credential.
• All applications are sent to and processed by ASAE.
The Steps To Achieve The CAE
1. Attend an orientation session conducted by Association Forum's CAE
working group.
2. Obtain 100 hours of qualifying professional development.
3. Complete the CAE application online at
www.asaecenter.org. Go to Career and then CAE Certification.
4. File the application form and appropriate fees.
5. Register for an Association Forum study course (most candidates go
through the study course process).

7. Read the materials, attend the study course sessions and prepare for the
exam.
8. Take the CAE exam.

Qualifying Professional Development Hours
• Only need 100 hours (does not have to be in any particular domain).
• Obtained within the last 5 years.
• Any continuing professional education offered by any professional entity may
be acceptable toward the professional development requirement as long as it is
directly related to either association or nonprofit management, as defined by
the CAE exam content outline, and meets the Commission’s guidelines.

Qualifying Professional Development Hours Cont’d
• CAE credit is earned for actual clock time of qualifying education, including partial hours, up to
a maximum of 8 CAE credits per day. (Ex. 1.5 hours of qualifying education equals 1.5 CAE
credits.)
• Live conferences, workshops, seminars or classes (including face-to-face,
audio/videoconference and online delivery).
• College or university courses taken for academic credit at a U.S. accredited academic
institution earn 15 hours per earned semester credit, 14 hours per earned trimester credit and
10 hours per earned quarter credit (e.g., a 3-credit semester course earns 45 CAE hours).
Qualifying Professional Development Hours Cont’d
• Preplanned in-depth group study of specific association management topic(s) with interaction between a minimum of 3 participants from different organizations earns 1 CAE credit for each clock hour, up to a maximum of 20 hours per CAE application (i.e. CAE Study Course / Groups).
• Mentoring: Candidates receiving mentoring specifically focused on the field of association management can earn up to 10 CAE hours. Must complete a minimum of 10 clock hours to qualify. Two hours of received mentoring equals one CAE hour, up to a maximum of 10 CAE hours. The individual providing mentoring must be a CAE. The mentor and mentee cannot be employed by the same organization. As verification, candidates will complete a designated form, to be signed by the mentor.

How Much Does It Cost?
• Application fee of $500 for ASAE members and $700 for non-ASAE members.
• The CAE study group costs $450 for Forum members and $600 for nonmembers.
• CAE Books run approximately $250- $500.
Two CAE Scholarships Available
• Association Forum Foundation Scholarship: Sponsored by Johnson
Lambert LLP– up to $1,000 covering the costs of the application fee,
study course registration and some standard CAE study materials.
• Million Dollar Round Table John J. Prast CAE Scholarship – up to
$1,250 covering the costs of the application fee, study course registration
and some standard CAE study materials.

CAE Scholarships • Candidates are required to complete and submit the standard online Association
Forum Scholarship Application (www.associationforum.org).
• Must provide a letter of support from your immediate supervisor.
• Automatically considered for both (unless a Million Dollar Round Table employee).
• Deadline: Aug. 22, 2016, for the Dec. 2, 2016, exam.
• Must be a current Forum member, meet CAE application eligibility requirements and demonstrate organizational financial need.
Bibliography of References• The CAE Commission’s Authoritative Literature presents readings for
the CAE exam, organized by the 9 domains of the CAE exam outline.
Most of these resources are available through ASAE's bookstore at
special member prices.
• Several resources contain information applicable to more than 1
domain, and thus appear more than once in the Authoritative
Literature. Where possible, specific chapters have been noted to
provide further direction as to the sections applicable to that specific
domain.

• The study aides are designed to help candidates gain an
understanding of the topics covered in the exam. The specific
questions, however, are not derived from the reading material. In
other words, the answers aren’t necessarily in the references!
Forum’s Study Course• Open to all aspiring CAEs at Chicagoland associations, Association Forum’s CAE Study
Course is designed to help association professionals study for the Certified Association
Executive exam and then pass it!
• Facilitated by CAE "graduates," study course sessions focus on the 9 identified domains of
association management.
• Study course sessions meet from 5:30 to 8 p.m. for 11 weeks in February, March and April
for the Spring exam date, and in September, October and November for the Fall exam date
on Tuesday nights at our downtown office.

Spring 2016 CAE Study Course
• When: Sept. 6 – Nov. 15, Tuesday evenings, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
• Where: Association Forum, 10 S. Riverside Plaza, Chicago (Association Forum Offices will be under renovation during this time, so classes will mostly be held in conference room 840 across from Association Forum offices with some held in the building across the street at 120. S Riverside Plaza)
• Fee: $450 Member / $600 Non-Member
• Registration Deadline: Thursday, Aug. 23. Late registrations will be accommodated; however, we cannot guarantee your CAE Study Guide will be available by the first session.
Study Course Hours for CAE Credit • Participants will earn 1 CAE credit for each clock hour, up to a maximum of 20 hours per
CAE application.
• All CAE eligible education must fit into the specified timeframe to be able to be used toward
either the exam application or renewal application.
• For candidates applying for the Dec. 2, 2016, exam and taking this Study Course, you may
claim up to 2.5 hours per session attended (7 hours total) up until the time preceding your
application submission.

How Much Time Does It Take?• Groups meet on Tuesdays, Sept. 6 – Nov. 15, 5:30 to 8:00 p.m.
• How much time you spend preparing for each study course session and the exam will relate to your comfort level with the material for each domain.
• Participants are strongly advised to read the recommended readings and complete the study questions before each session. Domains are not covered in numeric sequence.

About The Exam
• A knowledge-based, paper and pencil examination.
– 200 multiple-choice questions.
– Questions were written by CAEs under the direction of psychometricians (exam
writing experts).
– The content outline is derived from a role delineation study conducted by ASAE
& the Center that forms the body of knowledge for the association management
profession.
• Four hours or less to complete.

When Will I Know If I Passed?
• All candidates will be notified in writing within 8 weeks.
• Exams are computer graded.
• Successful candidates receive notification of their passing status only.
• No results are reported over the telephone.
What If I Don’t Make It?
• Unsuccessful candidates receive a summary report.
• Unsuccessful candidates may file a written petition to the
CAE appeals committee.

For Your Reference: When Is The Exam?• The next exam is scheduled for:

• Deadline to apply: September 28, 2016
• Following exam: May 5, 2017
How Is The Exam Scored?
• A predetermined standard of knowledge.
• There is no curve, and candidates do not compete against each
other.
• There is no limit on the number of candidates who may pass or fail
the exam.

CAE Recognition
• Successful candidates are recognized at ASAE &
the Center’s next national educational event.
• They are also recognized by Association Forum in
FORUM magazine and on Forum’s website.
Certification Renewal
• Must accumulate over 3 years:
– 40 hours of continuing education, professional development
or
– 30 hours of continuing education and
10 hours in other areas--such as leadership,
instruction or writing.
• Must complete CAE renewal form.

Certification Renewal
• One of the easiest ways to earn renewal hours is to volunteer with the Forum!
What Does Renewal Cost?
• $350 for members and $500 for nonmembers.
Renewal fees are reduced ($275 for members and
$425 for nonmembers) if the renewal application is
received by Oct. 31 of the year of certification
expiration.
• Must be paid when the renewal report form is submitted.
