Deloitte China’s “Pass the Torch” Programme brings together top accounting professionals and secondary schools students in Tin Shui Wai. Partners and managers of Deloitte devote their valuable time and spread their love and care for their mentees. They share with their mentees their life experience and secrets of success. Apart from helping their mentees to solve their learning problem, Deloitte partners also help them to build up confi dence and establish personal goals and to tackle problems and trials encountered when they grow up. The mentees are also encouraged to pass on the “love and care” spirit to the younger generation and to help them realise their potential to better serve the community.

Be the change you want to see in the world

No one can overcome diffi culties or achieve something on their own. On the road to success, there will always be a time when we need a helping hand and a guiding light. The Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme, initiated by Deloitte China, is a collaboration with the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College. The objective of the programme is for Deloitte to assist specifi c schools in lower income or more remote communities in Hong Kong with a mentoring programme for their selected students. The role of Deloitte mentors is to be an experienced, independent and safe sounding board for their mentees and to help as “career mentors” as these students approach an important crossroad in their life.

As we approach the completion of the fi rst 3-year mark, I have witnessed the changes of mentees throughout the programme. Many mentees stated that they have learnt to become a more responsible person to both themselves as an individual or showing the love and care to their families and the community. I was touched by the story of a mentee who has grown from a gloomy little boy to a young man who discovered where his future lies and has worked hard to achieve his dream.

I wish the graduating mentees a successful future and hope that they will contribute back to the community with their knowledge and experiences one day.

This commemorative book records the growth of our mentees and shares the experiences gained throughout the programme. We hope to promote the spirit of this programme to other companies and individuals who will work together for a better world.

Mr Chan Yin FaiPrincipalBuddhist Mau Fung Memorial College

Congratulations to all the graduates from Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme. I believe you have had a mixed experience in this 3-year mentoring programme, with all the joyful and diffi cult moments, as well as the tastes of success and failure. Anyway, it is defi nitely a fruitful and unforgettable memory in your life.

Three years ago, our school was honoured to jointly organize the Deloitte "Pass the Torch" Programme with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu. The Programme started in 2009 with 30 students; and now, there are more than 90 students. Over the years, with the support from Deloitte mentors, students and mentors have together participated in many meaningful activities concerning personal growth, social community and others. During these activities, students and Deloitte mentors have developed friendly relationships; more importantly, they learn and grow together. From this programme, I understand ”life infl uence life” does not happen between school teachers and students only. With their sincere and self-giving hearts, Deloitte mentors are keen to guide and support our students to grow and solve their questions and confusions in life. In less than no time, I am so glad to see the change our students have accomplished in this programme – they used to be shy and quiet, but now they are all full of self-confi dence. Furthermore, the process is also a very fruitful and rewarding experience for them.

2012 is a year with double meanings to you: you are the fi rst batch of graduates from the Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme, as well as the fi rst batch of graduates from the new 334 Academic Structure. You will start a new journey in your life after graduation. Facing different challenges in the society, you should never give up to diffi culties and failures, because it is the process to success. I wish all the graduates can maintain the good qualities they learnt from Deloitte mentors; never stop learning with infi nite passion and willpower; stay strong, pursue for excellence and strive for success in the future.

Lastly, I wish our Deloitte mentors all the best at work and have a joyful life. I also wish our graduates to sail before the wind and overcome all the challenges in life with great success in the future!

How time fl ies. The Deloitte "Pass the Torch" Programme has been held for three years already, and it's time for the Form 6 students to graduate. Three years ago, when I fi rst met this group of students while they were in Form 4, they were young and adorable, but lacked self-confi dence, and were lost and confused about their future. Look at them now again, they are all grown up! With the joint efforts from the caring teachers at the school and warm-hearted mentors from Deloitte, and through friendly communication with mentors as well as a wide variety of activities and experience, all of the students have built up their confi dence in themselves. They are now discovering their interests and dreams, and have learnt to treasure and appreciate what they have today. I am so excited to have witnessed their growth and achievement.

I wish all the graduates the best future and great success, whether they are planning to go onto higher education or start their careers.

More importantly, I hope the students can pass on the spirit of Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme, love and care more about their family and friends, and help the people in needs.

6

Ms July KongDirector, Human ResourcesDeloitte Touche Tohmatsu

Three years ago, Deloitte and the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College jointly organized the Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme. With great responses and support from our co-workers, the programme has achieved great success. When I fi rst met these students three years ago, some of them were quiet and shy, who did not even have the courage to make eye contact with strangers. However, today, they have become more cheerful, lively and confi dent, able to express themselves in ways they couldn’t have before. These students are now full of self-confi dence, having played active roles in organi ing different types of activities, with some of them even serving as project leaders and event hosts. Furthermore, they have all developed a positive outlook on life and the ability to ask and think about bigger and more sophisticated questions. Life is fi lled with countless possibilities, and the fate and further success of the students are always in their own hands.

Today, the students are happily talking about their future plans and goals. That fact proves our success in completing the objective of this programme. I wish all of the bright and energetic Form 6 students in this programme the best in their future and good health!

Mr Tao Fan & Mr Vincent ChoiELCHK Professional Training Centre

ELCHK Professional Training Centre is honored to act as a third party to provide planning support, trainings, execution and other services in Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme. Over these three years, we, serving as facilitators and social workers, have witnessed the support and encouragements from mentors, growth of mentees, as well as the hard work and contributions from the PMO. We are deeply touched and motivated by these efforts, which made us to fi rmly believe in assisting this mentoring programme.

In addition, we believe this is indeed a unique programme.

It is a programme based on the belief that ”life infl uences life”: some mentees said that when they saw the success of their mentors, who would become their role models, they too wanted to pull themselves together again, even though they once wanted to give up studying.

A simple dialogue can mean a thousand words: the most unforgettable dialogues between mentees and mentors are the supporting words the mentors gave to their students when they were down; the compliments when they did well in exams; the encouragements to cheer them up…. While these are all very simple dialogues, they mean so much to the mentees.

It is an unforgettable experience to the students: some mentees were invited by mentors to attend their work meetings, where they had a chance to communicate with foreigners and reali ed their defi ciencies in the English language which motivated them to strive to improve their English profi ciency.

It is an opportunity for mutual infl uence: mentees may regard themselves as the ones to ”be helped”. Through observation, they admired their mentors hard working attitude which is really important in life. On the other hand, mentors also learnt a lot from the mentees. They understand the mindset of these young students and how to assist with their personal growth.

It is a life lesson without time constraints: besides certain special mentoring activities, mentors and mentees also maintained personal contacts and built up friendly relationships with each other. They may talk over the phones late at night, or even meet with the mentees' parents. The relationship itself is a life lesson, without being constrained to the activities and events.

It is a crucial step in the growth of young people: youngsters are always confused with their future; they need the support from a group of adults with passion, who are ready to inspire and help the young generation with guidance and encouragement. Today, they have been together for 3 years in this mentoring programme, during which the mentees have also achieved critical changes in their lives. We hope all the mentees keep on fi ghting for their goals and strive to reali e their dreams.s

The secret of being happy is doing things for other people.

Setting an example is the only means of infl uencing another.

The programme

Deloitte China has always been committed to making a clear and positive difference through our corporate social responsibility projects. As we grow and develop our business, we also help our local communities to grow and develop by reinvesting an appropriate portion of our fi rm's knowledge, skills and resources into the priority needs of China which we deem to be education and the environment.

Through a mentoring system designed to foster education and skills development, we hope to pass down knowledge and wisdom to the next generation, so that they can be equipped with the necessary skills to prepare themselves for the challenges ahead.

As we began with the research for a suitable educational CSR programme in 2009, the tragic events in Tin Shui Wai tainted in the minds of the general public. Subsequent media coverage led to a dubious reputation for the district for having serious family and social issues. The accumulation of the events led to Tin Shui Wai to be termed a ”City of Misery”, with many residents rising up and rallying to push for more aid and reform for the area.

In 2009, Deloitte China, in collaboration with Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College, initiated the Deloitte ”Pass the Torch” Programme, a 3-year programme with Deloitte Volunteers providing mentorship to the College secondary students. Our aim was not only to provide support to the students' studies, but also help them in their personal development, as well as to motivate them towards achieving a meaningful future. Our employees, serving as mentors, have knowledge and experience that the students have yet to learn, so they serve as invaluable pieces to the students' personal development.

A good coach will make his players see what they can become rather than what they are.

9

The partnership between the school, the students and Deloitte provide an all-rounded approach for the students to truly maximise their potential. The programme is designed with three major elements in mind.

1) Develop their personal qualities - to identify and develop their strengths and overcome their weaknesses.

2) Steer the students' careers through mentoring - helping them plan and focus on their own studies towards achieving their personal aims and career goals, setting them off in the right direction.

3) Instil in them the importance of caring for the community, and hope that one day they too will work towards the betterment of the society at large.

As the project spans over a three-year period, it is a serious commitment for both parties, the mentors and mentees. Consequently, the mentors become truly intertwined into the mentees' lives, not only serving the role of a teacher, but also as a friend. The connection that results between the two parties is one of the most precious aspects of the programme and we believe that both the mentor and the student will mutually benefi t from this relationship.

Duty makes us do things well, but love makes us do them beautifully.

You certainly want to make good somewhere, why not make good where you are?

In 2009, the student mentees were slowly developing, just tapping into their potential as if they were caterpillars enveloped in a cocoon, sheltered from the outside. There was much time and space for them to grow and learn. Today, after three years of maturation, these same students have fi nally transformed into butterfl ies, ready to spread their wings and fl y out of their comfortable cocoons.

The name of this commemorative book signifi es the change of these students in the three-year Deloitte “Pass the Torch” Programme and denotes how they have matured and ready to take on more responsibilities. Signing the application form was only the fi rst of many commitments for the students to learn to step out of their comfort zones and face unknown challenges. Making a decision is relatively easy, but it takes true courage and strong determination to fi nally fulfi l a task. If they continue to preserve with this positive attitude, the sky is the limit for these new-born butterfl ies.

12

Don’t mind criticism. If it is untrue, disregard it; if it is unfair, don’t be irritated; if it is ignorant, smile; if it is justified, learn from it.

Education and knowledge are important to people’s personal and professional growth. Advanced levels of educations show that you have a drive and commitment to learn but it is more important to put new knowledge and skills into practice and apply what you have learnt to your tasks and goals.

Learning is a life-long process and there are multiple ways of learning new things. You must fi rst identify who you are, what you want and what you are capable of. Teachers share knowledge and experiences with students, and at the same time, gain insights and inspirations through the interactions with the younger generation. By learning in more than one way, you are further cementing the knowledge in your mind.

Learning is the beginning

The Deloitte Pass the Torch programme is a channel for both our mentors and mentees to learn and improve. We all come from a different background and each generation faces a new learning environment. Any kind of relationship is built on trust and respect. One has to be considerate and listen patiently in order to identify the characters of each individual and learn to work together in a more harmonious way. As an example, children nowadays are brought up using technological tools and prefer to communicate through social networking and seem to be isolated in their own world whilst adults still believe in the importance of face to face communications as it brings people closer together and avoids misinterpretation through written communications.

Talk to express; listen to understand.

13

We all have our own ”goals and wish list” but how achievable are they? Is this something you have just dreamed of or something you really want in your life. Some students admire the professional accountants, so their visit to the Deloitte offi ce in December 2009 was a fi rst experience of corporate environment. Is this any different to what they have in mind or what they see on TV? Do you want to have your own room - some students said they felt lonely and isolated and preferred to be in the open offi ce together with their colleagues. What about modern schools? Deloitte's visit to the Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College was inspiring. The blackboard and dusters from the old days are replaced by electronic boards and what inspired us most are the advanced technologies and the wide range of external curriculum activities that modern schools offer to enrich students' organisational, management and leadership skills.

One can only enjoy and absorb what we learn by using our preferred learning style. You should set your own learning objectives and goals and most important of all, not to lose the joy in learning. We can read through books, attend workshops/seminars or through interactive team building exercises. Choose what you think is the best, enjoy the learning process and in no time, you will discover that you have enriched yourself with different knowledge, build up your confi dence which leads to ultimate success.

Always listen to the opinions of others.

Recognition is the greatest motivator.

Mentoring is an ear to listen, a brain to pick, and a push in the right direction.

Education means developing the mind, not stuffi ng the memory.

14

Ability will enable a man to get to the top, but it takes character to keep him there.

The young generation nowadays is always criticised to have “high test scores but low ability” – possesses only knowledge acquired from textbooks, but lack the skills to think critically and to make decisions.

The fi rst step for personal development is to learn about whom you are and what you are capable of. It is easy but once these elements are identifi ed, you will become more proactive, solutions-focused, and responsive; all the elements which lead to success.

Traditional classroom style learning is effi cient in teaching theories or language skills, but not enough to cultivate growth and success. Students have to become better critical thinkers and better creators, and ask questions that cannot necessarily be answered in a classroom. This requires a huge deal of personal development, and utilising what one posseses to become the best they can be.

Throughout the 3-year programme, workshops and team building activities were organised to help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop their management, leadership and communication skills. Life is full of challenge and mistakes are inevitable. With constant attempts for improvements and reviews of performance, every mistake made is a valuable experience to learn from. There is no ”Take 2” in real life. Thus, the best way to prepare for challenges is through simulated practices in the early stages of your life where there is room for improvement, yet no severe consequences for mistakes made.

Developing personal growth

Nothing is more valuable than workable ideas.

15

Soft skills learnt from the workshops were attested from organising the two activities, ”Fun Day” and ”Carnival Day” where they had to start from identifying an event suitable for the targeted audience, advertising campaign, on-site support, how to stay within budget, contingency plan in case of bad weather etc. People all have different ideas and suggestions so confl icts are inevitable but the students learnt to overcome these in a harmonious way – they realised the contributing factor to success – ”teamwork and cooperation”.

Challenges may haunt you one after another. You may feel depressed if things go wrong but stay positive and learn from your mistakes. After each event, students would gather together for a ”debriefi ng presentation”. They will review the whole event from planning to execution, identify their mistakes, what they learned and more importantly, what to do if there was a 2nd chance. These presentations were not solely for improvement but it was another opportunity for students to develop their presentation skills, build up confi dence in public speaking, answer spontaneously to unexpected questions. The experiences were the fundamental for success in future activities.

You seldom hit anything, unless you aim at it.

Growing up is not always easy. When facing difficulties, courage and a spirit of independence can be more useful than crying for help.

16

Life is a succession of lessons which must be lived to be understood.

During the three-year learning journey, mentors shared their experiences and assisted the growth of their mentees. Mentees overcame obstacles and defeated challenges which made them stronger and more mature. However, the students' evolutions were not simply an introverted development, but rather extended to the people around them, the community they live in.

Community service is another aspect of personal development, only with the difference of making a meaningful impact on other people. The effort used to help improve people's life does not have to be huge. The smallest acts of kindness and time can make a permanent change to someone's life. Engaging in community services can stimulate one’s mind through seeing things from different perspectives as well as enrich life by supporting the less fortunate.

Through participation in community work, mentees can learn to become a leader. Being a successful leader not only involves sharing knowledge and developing personal skills, but also learning to be more considerate and caring. The student mentees partnered with university students from the ”Deloitte Club” and worked together in organising community service for the elderly. Through their work, the message of ”love and care” was instilled into everyone's minds. Although the efforts behind this seemed relatively light, strong messages were conveyed, reinforcing the idea that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a permanent change to someone's life.

While the mentees were getting an eyeful of how other peoples' life have changed, theirs was changing quietly as well. Amongst the community services they were involved in, the mentees’ achievement in organising the “Summer Carnival Day” is a testament to their eagerness to learn. The programme did not only benefi t them through skills development, but also provided opportunities for developing self-confi dence as well as realising their potentials. As the students move on to the next chapter in their lives, they take the memories and skills they have acquired during the ”Pass the Torch” Programme, and prepare for the challenges to come.

Love, harmony and care

To have an open mind does not mean you must always have an open mouth.

17

Happiness is not something you have in your hands, but something you carry in your heart.

A kindness done today is the surest way to a brighter tomorrow.

Love is sharing a part of yourself with others.

The nature is an excellent teacher who teaches us more than we can ever learn from books.

The best thing to spend on children is time.

18

”What have you achieved over the past 3 years?” – For some of us, we may not have an answer but for the student mentees, the name to this commemorative book says it all ”The Change”. They have transformed from innocent, shy young students to adults who can stand out and be independent.

Through workshops and other activities, the students learnt more about themselves and were able to identify the learning strategy or style which works best for them. Organising activities helped them to strengthen their management, organisation, leadership and interpersonal skills.

Knowledge gained will never be lost but be used as references for the future. As mentioned earlier, learning is never a one-way traffi c. One of the best ways to learn and develop oneself is through teaching or mentoring. Mentees were the ones being assisted over the past three years, but they can now act as ”mentors” to ”pass on” their experience to the younger generation.

Looking into the future

It is better to look where you are going than to see where you have been.

good and what has to be improved. I will keep up

the good work and try to improve on the weaker

areas.

If there was “take 2” for life, I would treasure the

About Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial CollegeIn September 1998, Buddhist Mau Fung Memorial College became the 13th secondary school founded by Hong Kong Buddhist Association, serving as a government-aided grammar school. The Association named the School after the 1st Chief Monk of East Putuo Temple, Master Mau Fung, as a memorial for his great virtue.

Our school motto is “to be bright and compassionate”. Therefore, our objectives are to inspire and nurture our students with knowledge and compassion. We encourage our students to never stop learning, which should not be limited to school education. With the most advanced technology, our students can master important learning approaches, tools and contents, which will be useful throughout their entire lives. Furthermore, we also encourage our students to be the active members in community services, and hope to strengthen their sense of belonging to their community and therefore nurture and demonstrate their compassion. In addition, we also organize a wide-range of extra curriculum activities with facilities inside as well as outside the campus.

On the basis of our school motto and school-based management, we hope, with the hard work of our students, supervision of the incorporated management committee and support from parents and the Association, to gain recognition from the society and gradually perfect the school to become an ideal institution for education.
