Salt Lake Arts Academy – A Public Charter School 2016-‐17 Annual Report
A Message from the Governing Board Dear Friends, welcome to our Salt Lake Arts Academy Annual Report for the 2016-‐17 school year. It is our distinct pleasure to report on what has occurred over the last year and to thank our entire community for their ongoing support.
The Middle School years are a formative period and we believe that a small community of devoted staff and volunteers can assist in the transition to the teenage years into High School and beyond. Nowhere in Utah can you find a Grade 5-‐8 school in the heart of an urban area that so heavily emphasizes academic achievement through the arts. SLArts fuels the passion for life-‐long engagement in the arts and more importantly, it stokes the creative process and helps our students develop a passion for learning.
We would like to highlight that SLArts is a non-‐profit, public charter school and as such, charges no tuition to the community that attends. While last year’s signing of Senate Bill 38 provides additional funding for Charter schools around the State of Utah, SLArts is still highly dependent on the ongoing generosity of our community patrons through donations, grants and volunteering. The various committees that work through the details of budgeting, school technology and fundraising always welcome new members as they move the school forward.
SLArts continues to prudently manage its $3 million annual budget and as an independent public school, does not utilize the services of any local or national for-‐profit charter school management companies. At the close of Fiscal Year 2017, we will have almost $138,000 in liquid assets available as a financial reserve. We will endeavor to grow this reserve as an asset for future academic investments in programs and facilities.
The Governing Board elected five new board members to begin serving this fall; Jennifer Goldman-‐Luthy, Alonzo Huntsman, Julie Livers, Michael Measom and Andy Yorkin. All of our new Board members are parents of current students and we are grateful for their willingness to serve. Many thanks to Jim Kreeck for his time and energy as Board Chair last year and we are grateful for his continued role on the Governing Board as Past Chair.
The Board and the Administration work positively and constructively as a team to give all decisions the thoughtful debate they deserve. Charter schools are intended to be places that allow for flexibility and innovation and I must credit the Administration on their ability to try new ideas, finding what works and improving on it. I would also like to acknowledge and thank the teaching staff at SLArts, they provide the educational foundation that the school is built upon and their commitment does not go unnoticed by students and parents.
With appreciation,
Scott Messersmith, Governing Board Chair

Social and Emotional Learning At SLArts One of the most important parts of our jobs as educators is helping young people master the skills they need to succeed in all areas of their lives – as students and as citizens of their world. Academically, we ask our students to adopt a “growth mindset,” with the idea that with effort, participation, preparation and risk-‐taking everyone is capable of academic growth. And yet just as important is encouraging the development of our students’ personal growth during these critical years. In 2016-‐17 Salt Lake Arts Academy brought two new programs to our school to support our students’ Social and Emotional Development.
To reinforce our school’s culture, the “No Bully” program came to SLArts to train teachers, students and parents in the “No Bully” method of creating and maintaining a positive social climate in our school, where students are “upstanders” instead of bystanders, and students and teacher work in “solution teams” to address issues of cruel behavior, aggression and bullying. SLArts also served as the Utah pilot site for a new curriculum, “Shifting Boundaries,” which teaches students about personal boundaries, sexual harassment and safe spaces. Both of these programs have helped us refine our social vision for SLArts – a place of respect, inclusion, safety and empathy.
Digital Teaching and Learning Initiative Last fall, Salt Lake Arts Academy was one of the first set of Utah schools awarded a Three-‐Year Digital Teaching and Learning Initiative (DTLI) Grant from the Utah Office of Education. Our approved plan focuses attention on writing across the curriculum to drive student achievement. The funds from the DTLI grant have helped SLArts achieve, for the first time, a one-‐to-‐one student-‐to-‐device ratio in all our academic classes. We have formed a Professional Learning Community where 5th and 6th grade level teachers meet weekly to enhance their training in integrating digital learning in their classrooms, through the use of the Google Education platform.
SLArts Community Snapshot 2016-‐17: 392 Students / 65 students received Fee Waivers / 16% Racial and Ethnic Diversity / 7 % of students received Special Education services / 30 Zip Codes represented / Promoted 8th Graders attend 10 different High Schools.
2017 SAGE Scores As a Charter School, SLArts is held accountable to the same standardized testing as other public schools. The currently administered test, SAGE, measures student “proficiency” and “growth” in three subject areas, English/Language Arts, Math and Science. The scores below represent the percent of students testing “proficient” in a given area for SLArts and, for comparison, the State of Utah. The color bands below follow “cohorts” of students, so that you can see their progress over the time they are at SLArts.
Financial Report FY17 Salt Lake Arts Academy finished the year in a positive financial position, thanks again to the careful attention of our Governing Board and Business Manager. The school undergoes an Independent Audit each year; the results of those Audits are on our website, www.slarts.org, under “Financials.”

Arts Across the Curriculum – All Year Long In 2016-‐17 SLArts embarked on a four-‐year curricular theme, “Elements of a Better World,” beginning with “air and light.” Teachers wove this theme through both the academic and arts curriculum, culminating with our Advanced Arts original production, “Elements.” Our Drama students mounted a modern, “street punk” presentation of “Macbeth” in the Fall, and produced a group of student written, directed, and performed One-‐Act Plays in the Spring. Our Music students performed a Holiday Concert, and winter Chamber Concert and a Spring Pops Concert in addition to performing at our school’s wonderful end-‐of year celebration, “SLArts Fest.” Our Dance students created and staged two full-‐length Dance Concerts with original choreography. Our Visual Arts students produced fantastic work for several “Gallery Strolls” at school, produced outstanding props and scenery for the “Elements” production, and showcased remarkable 8th Grade work at our SLArts Fest in June.
Community Support Throughout the year, our wider SLArts community has shown tremendous generosity towards our students, teachers and programming. As a Charter School, SLArts still receives about $550 less public funding per student than traditional Salt Lake City schools. We are so grateful to our families, grandparents, friends and partners who make investments to help us deliver our program.
• Annual Campaign l l Our most important annual fundraising initiative raised $62,270 from families and friends in unrestricted funding to support arts teachers’ salaries, technology in the classroom and support for students receiving fee waivers.
• Love UT, Give UT l l Sponsored by the Community Foundation of Utah, this onel day crowdfunding event fired up our community as we competed against other nonprofits to see who could recruit the highest number of donors. Thanks to Challenge Grants from J. Lynn and Diana Dougan / Catalyst Foundation, our SLArts Governing Board, Tracey Thompson and Stephen Brown, and several very generous anonymous donors we ultimately raised $36,621 from 465 donors for Salt Lake Arts Academy, winning our category!
• Grants l We received generous grants from the Sorenson Legacy Foundation ($10,000) and Rocky Mountain Power Foundation ($3,000) to help us upgrade our Black Box Theater Lighting. We also received a $48,800 grant from the Utah State Charter School to finish the lighting upgrade and purchase a classroom set of iPads for Visual Art, a portable Marley Dance Floor for dance performances and a classroom set of Ukuleles for our music program.
• Raising Friends AND Funds l l We had a ball connecting with our parent community at our 2017 Parent Party, and raised both funds and friends for our school at small gatherings throughout the year. All told, our parents raised $19,654 to support our programs.
• Volunteer Hours –Whether it is planning fundraising parties, chaperoning field trips, helping sew costumes for Drama or Dance productions, subbing for teachers, serving pizza at Movie Night, or hauling music gear around, SLArts runs on volunteer energy. This year our parents donated over 1,800 of volunteer time.
The following parents, grandparents, friends and organizations made donations to Salt Lake Arts Academy between July 1, 2016 and June 30, 2017.
