CPD Programme Newsletter 4, December 2012
Dear Members,
The autumn term 2012 has been the busiest yet for the BSME CPD programme. We advertised 30 courses and 2
conferences - more than we had in the entire year last year! This was very much in answer to what members said they
wanted in the needs analysis, as well as a reflection on the way the programme has gown and developed in the last year.
Inevitably, a few courses (8 in total) struggled to get the sufficient number of delegates and were ultimately not viable. On
the whole though, it has been a terrific start for CPD for the academic year 2012-13 and as always I would now like to
share with you some of the wonderful feedback we have received. Given the number of courses we ran this term and the
amount of positive comments received, I have tried to be selective but, nevertheless, it does make for a rather lengthy
newsletter this time! I hope you enjoy!
Outstanding Music KS1-4 (merged), Modern English School, Cairo, Egypt Steve Burnage, Insetcourses.com
Saturday 6th October 2012
All of the information was explained in detail and reinforced with useful handouts and slides. The information was also
very current to what is going on in the UK at the moment which is very useful for teachers on the international circuit.

Early Years Conference Dubai British School Dubai
Thursday 11th – Friday 12th October 2012
This conference, as the feedback shows, was a huge success with over 45 delegates in attendance and a waiting list!
Delegates clearly benefited enormously from Pam Mundy’s expertise in this area and we have already pencilled in
dates with her for next year!
Pam's wealth of experience and her current position in reviewing the curriculum has a huge impact on the course she
delivers. She gives practical insight into the reasoning behind changes, and at the same makes those changes seem
non-threatening or overwhelming to take on board. Most people on the course were aware of the changes to EYFS
profile and assessment, but Pam's knowledge and guidance have given us the tools to implement those changes with a
view to continued good practice. It was a great course that will impact our department greatly and keep us in line with
current UK standards. This is why being part of BSME is so important for us to give up opportunities to go on these
courses. Angelique O’Brien, El Alsson British International School, Cairo, Assistant Deputy Head (Early Years)
Pam Mundy was the best speaker I have seen on Early Years in Dubai, The course was exactly what I was hoping for it
was very informative with lots of practical guidance on how to implement the changes in EYFS. Her passion and
suggestions for excellent practice in EYFS were excellent and really inspired me. I will happily go again to any other
courses with this speaker and I urge BSME to get her to return. I urge you again to use Pam Mundy again she was so
inspiring I feel like I need a 'shot' of Pam every term to inspire me and bring out the best in my teaching! Rachel Field,
Dubai British School, Class Teacher
I just felt all the information as useful and just what I needed with all the change to the framework. Excellent. Clare
Carpenter, Fujairah Academy, Head Teacher of Early Years
Pam Mundy's knowledge and enthusiasm allowed for an enlightening course. Her mix of expertise justification and
"coal-face" ideas ensured that all the information was relevant and useful, particularly the importance of assessment
for learning. Elaine Brennan, Nadeen International School, Head Teacher
The whole programme was extremely useful. The real strength was the knowledge, experience, expertise and
presentation style of Pam Mundy! She was absolutely brilliant and extremely inspiring. She responded in a careful,
informed and reflective manner to all questions asked and ensured that everyone was content with the information she
was giving throughout the programme. Kate Owens, DESS, Doha, Qatar, Reception Year Group Leader

Hi-Impact Coaching and Mentoring Part 1 The British International School of Jeddah, KSA Tuesday 16th to Wednesday 17th October 2012
There was plenty of time for us to practice our newly acquired coaching skills. Very thought provoking and have now
got solutions for reaching a couple of targets I need to implement! Jennifer Westwood, BISJ, Nursery Lead
The tools provided were great! Tim Belfield, BIS Jeddah, Deputy Head Teacher, Primary
By the end of the 2 days I felt fully prepared to face the challenge of putting the learning into practice. Ian Morrison, BIS
Jeddah, Head of Chemistry
The practical experience. This bridged the gap between our reading of the techniques presented in the hand-outs and
the reality of using the techniques. There is no substitute for hands on learning. Opportunity to work with a range of
people. We never had the same partner twice. The ability of the presenter to take the participants outside of their
comfort zone, without embarrassment or discomfort. The opportunity for deep reflection. Julie Geissler, BIS Jeddah,
SENCO
The fact that we had plenty of time and opportunity to practise our skills and use our knowledge was great. Steve
O’Shaughnessy, Jeddah Prep and Grammar School, Head of Prep School

Hi-Impact Coaching and Mentoring Part 1 Rashid School for Boys Dubai
Tuesday 16th to Wednesday 17th October 2012
Many many many opportunities to put the learning into practice; fantastic context, rationale and time and space for
development of the skills involved. Awesome. Flawless CPD experience. And I am essentially a whinger who looks for
things to complain about in teacher training. Richard is categorically superb. Keep using him. Coaching is totally new
and very very hard for teachers. Letting go of control is a mission for teachers. This will have significant impact on my
behaviours, choices, and strategies for achieving change in schools. Best CPD I've ever been on, quite possibly. Wow. If
you work with people (yes, I know just how wide that definition is) then you need to go on this course! Michael
Drennan, Head of Careers, Dubai British School, Dubai
I love the Reality Hexagon - have used it already with my students in evaluating my performance in the classroom! Very
easy to use and gives clear indication of areas to explore. My question style has definitely changed. Great course -

The Forensic Science Challenge The School of Research Science
Monday 5th November 2012 The initial activity was interesting and well done. It involved everybody and provided us with ideas that we could use
ourselves. It was fun. The last activity where we analysed lengths of maggots etc, to determine death time was a great
activity and something that students would greatly benefit from. It was an activity I would love to do with my students,
for data analysis and group work, hands on problem solving etc. It was also something new, which is what I went on the
course for. Rachel Cannon, Dharan British Grammar School, Science Teacher

BSME Primary Teachers’ Conference 2012 JESS Arabian Ranches
Wednesday 7th to Friday 9th November 2012
This is the second year in a row that we have worked with Dragonfly Training Ltd, and with good reason! The feedback is simply wonderful and you can literally feel the way teachers have been inspired as you read their comments below. They
really do deliver ‘what it says on the can’ – exciting, practical ideas that can be taken straight into the classroom to improve teaching and learning. We look forward to working with Dragonfly Training Ltd in other sectors of education in
the future.

Brilliant conference! Very impressed. Kimberley Bell, The English School Kuwait, Infant Teacher.
Second time around for me and as enjoyable as the first. Once again I am taking a ton of information away with me and
am excited to incorporate new ways of doing things into my teaching practice. Lynne Bolton, Saharan British Grammar
School, Year 5 Teacher
Thanks again for running a fantastic course – I gained lots of great ideas that I have brought straight to my classroom
today. I found the course very practical/hands on - this assisted my understanding and helped them to become
embedded. Mary Frost, Doha College, Qatar, Year 6 Classroom Teacher.
I loved the new ideas that were given and will certainly try many of them in my own practice. I enjoyed the afl and
marking sessions and would have liked even longer on those areas! I enjoyed the speakers and their ideas. Nicola
Smith, JESS Arabian Ranches Dubai, Year 6 Class Teacher
I really liked the games/strategies shared as new practise. Brilliant. Jane Burt, Doha College Qatar, EYFS Teacher
The presenter’s knowledge and passion for improving the quality of teaching and learning was a pleasure to see. I
really enjoyed meeting delegates from other schools and sharing areas of expertise. Ann Djedid, Compass International
School Doha Qatar, Learning Improvement Leader, IPC Year 5 Teacher
It was a great learning experience for me and the trainers were storehouse of innovative technique of teaching
(massive!). I am new to this line/style of teaching and I am now all the more motivated to learn more wonderful new
things Reena Singh, Compass International School, Al Khor, classroom teacher
The course was full of inspirational ideas which we will now take back to school. The problem will be which one to
initiate first! Thanks so much! Maureen Glancy, MES Cairo, Primary Senior Lead Teacher
The sessions with Rebecca I found very useful. I would have liked more time with her. She gave practical advice and
examples which could be implemented in class immediately. One app she recommended does not seem to appear in the
the App Store though, even though I have a UK account. This was one called 2 Simple and looked very interesting.
Angela Souter, Jebel Ali Primary School Dubai, Year 2 Teacher and ICT Leader
Great course, got lots of ideas, really will improve my teaching and I can take many concrete and bite-size activities
back to share with staff. Thought your expertise was outstanding and will recommend you to others. Louise Bullock,
Head of ICT KS1 KS2 Sherborne Qatar
Interesting, great fun, loads of practical ideas and things I can take back to my classroom. Reminded me of lots of
things I do know about but just never quite get around to implementing… but I’m now inspired to ‘up my game’. Rachel
O’Rourke, The English School, Kuwait, Year 1 Class Teacher
So You Want To Be A Middle Level Leader The English School Kuwait
Monday 12th to Tuesday 13th November 2012
Good for supporting new ideas Reinforcement of current practice Networking with other professionals. Provider
obviously passionate about his work and this relayed through his information. Many thanks. Nigel Sawyer, British
School of Kuwait, Head of Humanities and Year 7 & 8
I really learnt a lot from the coaching element of the programme. It was very interesting and beneficial to develop
strategies to coach different people. Andrew Winder, Doha English Speaking School, Head of Performing Arts
Mike Jeffries is clearly a very nice man who genuinely wants to improve the lot of teachers. The emotional intelligence
part of the course for me, was interesting - it seemed to reconfirm what I already knew, that sometimes people's own
personal insecurities can affect their relationship with colleagues around them. The Instruct v Neglect exercise was also
highly informative. David Gibbs, New English School Kuwait, Head of History

Primary Numeracy – Assessing Pupils’ Progress. Whole School Approaches
Horizon School Dubai Sunday 18th November 2012
Finding out about really useful, on-line resources. It's very difficult when you have been out of the UK for some time to
be aware of these as they can be difficult to find. MathsMap. I found the entire course very useful and informative.
Caroline Howorth, JESS Arabian Ranches Dubai, Class Teacher, Head of Primary Maths
Time for those present to discuss their current school practices and to learn from each other. Variety of presentation
formats from sheets to screen to computers. This made it more enjoyable. Ray obviously knew his subject in great
depth. I think it was a shame more people weren't present. Would it be possible for JESS Jumeirah to have more
delegates attend? Is each school limited to 2? If so, could you change this policy to allow for more staff from one
school? It was great. Very informative. Alison Japp, JESS Jumeirah Dubai, Class Teacher Year 2
Full of practical ideas to take back to school regarding the overall development of the curriculum. There were many
exciting strategies to raise standards and at the same time, enhance excitement in the children's learning. e.g. GECKO,
Numeracy passports and assessment re: app. There were no major weaknesses. Very useful experience. Thank you.
Charles Kelly, El Alsson School, KS2 Coordinator, Numeracy Leader
I thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of the course...from the opportunities to reflect, share to hands on creative activities.
Not only have you inspired my teaching you have provided a clear path of what to do next in school. Furthermore,
thank you Ray and Mike for your expertise, support and amazing resources. I have already emailed teacher friends in
the UK to share maths map and tips. I have a list of 13 things to do! Each with a focus and a way of implementing
them....a very useful course full of ideas and next steps... Ray was an excellent presenter full of knowledge, advice and
interesting tips that can be implemented into school. A fantastic course... Lucy Daniels, JESS Jumeirah Dubai, Year 5
Teacher and Numeracy Coordinator
I found this course amazing. Everything which he said made sense! I would say the most useful part was his knowledge
as every question he was asked, he was able to answer and advise us how to move forward with APP. Just fabulous.
Thank you so much for your help and advice. Ali Gaywood, Al Yasmina, Maths Coordinator and FS2 Classroom
Teacher
I enjoyed and appreciated the fact that we got time in the IT lab to test out Mathsmap while on the course so we could
iron out any issues whilst the support was there. The fact that Ray changed his program to include the Numeracy
Passport because people were asking about it was great - especially for me since I hadn't seen that before and wasn't
going to be on the course the following day when he was planning on explaining it. I actually found all the course useful
and wouldn't have wanted any part to be cut or missed out. The issues with APP were, for me, necessary to look at so
that we could understand where Ray was coming from. I thought the approach to APP that Ray has taken means that it
seems less cumbersome now to try and implement in school. It has made, to me, the valuable tool that APP is much
more accessible and manageable which I hope we are then able to implement in school at some stage after
consultation. The fact that all the archived resources have been placed into one database that we can access is a great
tool - some of these were fantastic tools for teaching that had been lost due to the change in government. Thanks very
much for spending the time. effort and energy so that we can use them again - greatly appreciated. Nicola Kelly,
Fujairah Private Academy, Maths Coordinator

The subject knowledge and experience of the instructor were excellent. The initial points about consistency and

The work on GecKo was also interesting. Martin Clifton, St Christopher’s School Bahrain, Numeracy Co-ordinator for

Extending Your Leadership
Doha College Qatar Sunday 2nd to Tuesday 4th December 2012
I found the intellectual content stimulating. Particularly interesting was the building up of 21st century approach to
managing cognitive learning models and the obsolescence of the mid-20th century mechanistic micromanaging model
in favour since Victorian times and still used by some in a harmful way in administration. Mary Dawe is a National
Treasure! Tim Serong, Head of Y5, The New English School, Kuwait
I thoroughly enjoyed the work we did on motivating people and dealing with challenging people and issues. I will be
using the work on delegation and motivating people straight away. I would like to take the opportunity thank Mary
Dawes, who delivered the training enthusiastically, skilfully and thoughtfully. David Brandreth, Primary literacy
Subject Leader, St Christopher’s, Bahrain
Good use of practical situations to model and demonstrate strategies. Tammy Naidoo, KS2 Coordinator, British
International School Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia
The presenter was excellent and the hand outs very useful. Doha College were friendly and welcoming. Louise
Lonsdale, Nursery Year Leader, St Christopher’s, Bahrain,
The activities and discussions highlighted the difference between management and leadership. The section on dealing
with difficult people, both within your teams or parents, was very useful and interesting as was the dealing with a
major incident. I found all of it useful. I would have liked to discuss how to deal better with parents who have totally
unrealistic expectations and aspirations for their children. Helen Braben, Head of Biology, Doha College, Qatar

understanding and basic skills to feedback to whole school regarding PIPS, as a 'fool-proof’, effective and not labour
intensive platform for assessing whole school performance. Rosie Sohail, Head of Primary Maths, DBGS, KSA
I can understand the data more accurately and can recognise which children in my own class will need to make
progress. I will also be able to explain the data to other staff. Kari Beardsmore, Y2 Teacher and Assessment

The presenters had excellent knowledge of the assessment tool and how to analyse data and were able to answer all
questions raised comprehensively. Martyn Clifford, Head of Primary 1 (KS1), Deira International School

Very comprehensive programme. Plenty of very useful material to take back to school. Motivating. Will certainly
incorporate many ideas into my teaching. Will change my worksheets, wall displays and teaching methods as a result
of the course. Alan Scott, Business Teacher, New English School, Kuwait
It helped me understand the standards of whole school marking policy; also, different literacy starters and plenaries
were very useful for subject and EAL teachers. I've learnt more about the standards of BSME and Ofsted national
strategies, etc. Thank you very much for your hard work. I was delighted to be part of the group and share and learn
from each and every one of them. Thanks again. Gayana Krnatyan, EAL English Teacher, International Community

I just found Eva so interesting to listen to. With her experience she brought the best out in everyone and had time to
hear any questions and to respond with empathy and interest. Lovely lady! Marina Clementi, Teaching Assistant,

The visual Powerpoint and you tube clips to reinforce the points. The case study notes made you think. A well run
course We do use most of the methods already but I did get a couple of new ideas. It’s also a great way to network.

BSME and NCSL
The relationship between BSME and The National College for School Leadership grows ever stronger. The first NPQH
cohort is now in the final stages of completion and all delegates are on track to graduate in March/April 2013. The
feedback we have received, from all parties, (delegates, NCSL, placement schools) has been fantastic.
NPQH
The application window for the the new NPQH programme was opened in early November and will close on 29th January
2013. The programme has been re-designed to increase the number of face-to-face days being delivered in the region. It
still retains the online support element and the coaching element has been extended, both of which are critical to this
programme. There is also a longer in-school placement. This programme is much more closely linked to Masters level
study and Universities such as Nottingham and the Institute of Education will offer at least 60 CAT points toward their
Masters in Educational Leadership and Management, which equates to one third of the Masters’ degree. We anticipate
that this will attract a good-sized cohort and we are looking at ways to increase our BSME placement school list to
accommodate this across the region. As before, this programme is still exactly the same as the English qualification just
delivered slightly differently due to the fact it is being run outside of England. The qualification gained upon successful
completion is exactly the same as if the individual had completed this programme in England.
More information on the English NPQH model can be found here:

MLDP
BSME and NCSL are currently working on developing a similar accredited programme for Middle Leaders. This will be a
bespoke programme designed specifically for BSME and our international setting. We are meeting with NCSL in January
and we will keep you updated as plans develop. We are extremely excited about devising this middle leaders programme
for our members and long-term it has the potential to be self-sufficient.
BSME CPD Host Schools Autumn Term 2012
Finally, as always, I would like to offer my sincere thanks to the following BSME CPD Host School for their enthusiasm
and support in volunteering to host events this term. Without them the programme simply could not run. I think it is
testament to the credibility of the CPD programme that we have worked with 14 different host schools across the
region this term alone.
