DEAR PARENTS/CARERS:

School Board

The Board met for the first time this year on the 15th February and examined the draft budget

for 2017. The general directions of the budget were explained to the Board and consensus

was that the budget met the needs of our Business Plan 2016-18. Mrs Robinson also gave an

excellent overview of the PATHS program and how it is designed to develop social and emo-

tional intelligence.

We are seeking a community member and a parent/carer to replace people who have stepped

down. One of these is Mrs Kertin Brannigan who is returning with her family to Ireland. Kerstin

has been heavily involved in the P&C and as a Library volunteer and we wish her safe travels.

Community members who have skills and abilities that would add capacity to the Board would

be welcomed. For example Mrs Rosemary Cahill, an expert in Early Childhood education gave

great service to the school through her skillset and knowledge. People in business or those in

a field connected to education eg psychology, would make great community members of the

Board.

We also need to build the numbers of parent reps to ensure that there is a greater number of

community reps compared to staff as outlined in the Terms of Reference of the Board.

The commitment required is to undergo training and then to attend two meetings per term

which are held here on a Wednesday at school and commence at 2.45pm.

Leaders Assembly

Last Thursday the student leaders ran the first assembly for the year and they did an out-

standing job. Our Student Councillors for this year are Blake, Eden, Harry, Lily, Zac, Georgia,

Jamie and Gemma and we look forward to them continuing to be role models for our expected

behaviours –Be Safe- Be Responsible– Be Respectful and Be an Achiever.

Mr Kelleher also announced the names of our Faction Captains for 2017. They are; Chevy,

Tallon, Jordan, Marcel, Betsy and Sinead.

OLD UNIFORMS

PATHS CURRICULUM:

From time to time at school, we have need of spare uniforms. If your children have grown out of theirs

and they are still in good condition (and have the new emblem) and you don‟t have anyone to pass them

onto we could put them to good use. You can leave them with the lovely ladies in the front office and we

will store and use as required. Thanks.

CRAZY HAIR DAY—THURSDAY 16TH MARCH

One of our staff members has decided to "Be Brave and Shave" to raise funds for leukaemia research. In order to support this person we are having a Crazy Hair Day. Students and staff are invited to wear a wig, colour their hair or wear a crazy hair style and bring a donation to be forwarded to the Leukaemia Research Foundation.

PATHS stands for Promoting Alternative THinking Strategies. It is a social and emotional curriculum that was written for primary school children. Goals of the program are to improve children‟s social-emotional and behavioural skills and to create a positive classroom/school. It complements our PBS process within the school. At Craigie Heights Primary School we have started to teach the PATHS curriculum and use the program‟s strategies in all of our classrooms. In the last newsletter I introduced some of the generalization strategies that are used to support students. These include “Do Turtle” and “Control Signals” as below. Self-control can be difficult for all of us! However, it can be more difficult for children, because children are not as experienced at planning ahead, handling frustration, or being able to use their thinking skills to con-trol their behaviour when they are feeling upset. Being able to stop and calm down is critical because it is difficult to consider solutions to a problem when we are upset or confused. When we are feeling upset, we often act without thinking about our behaviour, which often leads to other problems. In other words, learning to stop and calm down is the first step in learning how to use effective thinking skills. The above 2 strategies therefore play a key role in helping our children to solve a problem.

Crazy Sock Day for Popy—Thursday 2nd March

For several years now, our school has supported Popy from Bangladesh. Popy, who lives with her Mum and Dad, two sisters and a brother, was born on 12th April 2002. Her Dad is a casual labourer and her Mum, who doesn‟t have a paid job, looks after their home and family. Their house is made of light materials with an iron roof. Popy likes to play football and draw. When she grows up she would like to be a teacher.

The village where Popy lives is in rural Bangladesh, in an area prone to flooding during the monsoon season. Most families in the village are involved in farming or labouring and the majority of adults are illiterate. There isn‟t much in the way of healthcare available; and most babies, whose mothers are often quite young, are born at home; many girls are married at an early age. The quality of education for both boys and girls is limited. There are very few opportunity for children to participate in community activities.

We fundraise for Popy by holding one event each term. This term, for the donation of a gold coin, everyone in our school community is invited to wear a pair of Crazy Socks to school, on Thursday 2nd March. Please remember you still need to wear school shoes.

CHAPLAINS CHATTER

“There‟s a proverb that says… „The tongue has the power of life and death‟. In other words what we say can either add life or subtract life. What we say will either increase our value or cheapen us. What we say either creates opportunity or closes the door to opportunity. So for goodness sake, talk in a way that advantages you as you face your future.‟ Wes Beavis from „Give Your Life a Success Makeover‟ I have been involved in two conversations recently which have made me think about how often we use catastrophic language to describe situations which are not catastrophic! That is, we exaggerate or amplify a situation, or sometimes a feeling we have, and give voice to our exaggerated feelings. In the quote above Wes Beavis strongly suggests that we think carefully about what words we use. This is not always easy but if we were able to learn to do this, and be accurate about what we say, our lives and our world would be much more peaceful and calm.

We are looking for people interested in becoming involved in the following committees:

Canteen – Working with Amber Wallrodt, the canteen committee will be involved in reviewing the menu to ensure the canteen provides healthy and yummy food options for our children. A priority of the committee is to ensure that the canteen is a sustainable service.

Fundraising – The fundraising committee will assist Vicki Ellis with the organising and running of the fundraising events throughout the year.

Safety house – This year we are looking for someone to take on the role of Safety House Co-ordinator so that we can set up a network of safety houses in the area.

Fundraising Goals

This year our primary goal is to assist the school in upgrading our Visual equipment in the Undercover Area for school assemblies and events. We will also be further investigating the heating and cooling op-tions for this area. In addition we will continue to provide support for school programs and excursions. If you have any suggestions for a fundraising goal this year please come along to a meeting and raise for discussion.

Upcoming Fundraising Events – Term 1

ELECTION DAY BBQ - the date is set for Saturday, March 11. We will aim to follow last year‟s format with the sale of bacon and egg muffins, hot dogs and hamburgers, as well as cold drinks and a cake stall. We will need volunteers to assist with the cooking and sale of items. If you can offer an hour of your time to assist please let us know by putting your details in the office drop box, or writing your name on the ros-ter displayed on the whiteboard in front of Learning Block 1. Cake donations on the day would also be greatly appreciated. BOGAN BINGO – flyers were sent home regarding the upcoming Bogan Bingo fundraiser to be held on Saturday the 25th of March. Tickets are $25 each and numbers are limited. This adults only event is sure to be a fun and memorable event so get you friends together and order your tickets today.

Thank you for your continued support to help raise funds for our school – this helps to improve our facilities, and support our students educational experience.

Do you have pre-kindy children? Looking for a community group to join? Why not try Toddler Jam!

Toddler Jam is an inclusive, entertaining, interactive and engaging musical experience for toddlers and young children. its run right next door to the school by Craigie Baptist Church for the community. It runs on Monday mornings during school term from 9.30am to 11am and costs $7.50 for 1 child or $10 for 2 or more children from the one family. There is also a concession card discount available.
