SUCCESS FOR ISG, AFTER TRIPLE COMPLETION IN CENTRAL SQUARE. ISG is a dynamic global construction services company. Its people specialise in fit out, technology, construction and development and are dedicated to delivering places that help people and businesses thrive. ISG has undertaken a series of major projects in Cardiff for client, Rightacres Property, starting with the delivery of Three Central Square, the new BBC Cymru Wales Headquarters, in early 2018. The contractor completed Two Central Square in the Autumn of 2018 followed by the surrounding public realm space in November of 2018, completing three major elements of the Central Square masterplan, in collaboration with Cardiff City Council. Two Central Square is an impressive purpose-built office, adjacent to the BBC building occupied by Hugh James solicitors and Cardiff University’s Journalism, Media and Culture faculty (JOMEC). Lighting, CCTV, street furniture as well as soft and hard landscaping were all part of the public realm project delivered to enhance and provide easy access to the public through Central Square from Cardiff Central Station’s concourse. Jon James ISG’s regional director, commented: “We’re delighted that ISG has been able to leave such a great legacy within the Welsh capital whilst building on our strong relationship with client, Rightacres Property, to deliver three key elements of the Central Square masterplan. These projects are a great representation of ongoing investment and the quality of schemes within the city.” ISG is also proud to be sponsoring Invest in Cardiff at MIPIM and you can find out more here: https://www.isgplc.com/en MIPIM 2019, the world’s leading property exhibition, is this year taking place in Cannes on March 12-15 and the Cardiff Capital Region (CCR) is looking to use the major event to showcase its regional investment opportunities. MIPIM - Marche International des Professionals d’Immobilier - attracts the most prominent parties from all sectors of the global property industry and is a catalyst for learning, networking and securing investment. More than 26,000 individuals, including around 5,000 investors, will attend the four-day event from across 100 countries and 500 cities. Over the last decade, the real estate event has become the foremost platform to attract inward investment, and multiple cities and regions within the UK have already built a strong presence at the exposition including the West of England Combined Authority, City of Edinburgh Council, Invest Liverpool and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Cardiff Council is also a seasoned MIPIM attendee securing a number of high-profile investments as a direct result of the event in recent years. Councillor Andrew Morgan, chair of the CCR City Deal Regional Cabinet, said: “The CCR’s main priorities include increasing influence and mobilising networks and improving competitiveness through challenge-led approaches. CARDIFF INNOVATION CAMPUS – EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT WITH BOUYGUES UK Cardiff Commitment’s Open Your Eyes Week provided Bouygues UK with the chance to deliver two Junior Aspirations sessions with Year 5 and 6 pupils at St Joseph’s Primary School. These interactive sessions aim to provide context of the construction industry relative to the pupils’ learning and highlight the many careers paths and breadth of jobs within the industry. Through the Cardiff Commitment initiative, a Bouygues UK Building Aspirations session held with a cluster of Years 10 and 11 pupils at Cathays High School. This was an initial introduction to the world of construction, which also covered the technical and digital side of the industry. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Augmented Reality were used to highlight new developments and job roles within construction. Stimulating interest in the technical and digital aspects of the industry that link in with the Digital Competency Framework will form part of the next set of interactions from Bouygues UK with Cathays High School. The construction industry has recognised that reaching out to younger age groups, through multiple interactions, rather than one off events or activities, is one of the best tools to dispel some of the common myths and to help young people understand the opportunities that the modern construction industry can provide. The Cardiff Commitment provides these opportunities to interact and engage with schools, helping to ignite and inspire interest in industries like construction amongst young people in Cardiff. This is the first time anyone from Wales has ever attended. The purpose was to discuss the future of the arts across the world, the mission was to advocate for the Welsh arts and to develop international connections, partnerships and business. The congress highlighted the importance of the arts to growing economies and as one of the few ways to unite people in this increasingly polarised world. Our Cardiff Council representative was also invited for an afternoon with the Curator of the New York Highline. The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Saved from demolition by the neighbourhood and the City of New York, the High Line is a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature, art, and design. This community-driven green space is now one of the most visited attractions in NYC. Cardiff is planning a similar project and has now been offered the opportunity to work with the New York High Line office to share learnings and design ideas. Ruth maximised this opportunity to promote the work Cardiff is developing with Sound Diplomacy, the global leader of the Music City Movement on an innovative music strategy for this city. She was invited to the New York City Mayors Office of Media and Entertainment to discuss this work and explore future collaborations. This office encompasses the key economic and creative sectors of film, TV, theatre, music, advertising, publishing, and digital content. In total, these industries account for over 305,000 jobs in New York and an economic output of $104 billion. CARDIFF IN NEW YORK CARDIFF CAPITAL REGION TO TAKE SOUTH-EAST WALES TO THE WORLD This is one of the questions we’ve been putting to some of our local companies. Together with our MIPIM partner Celf Creative, we have interviewed 29 companies from a variety of industry sectors including creative, life sciences and financial and professional services; some home grown companies and others that have relocated to the city from other parts of the UK. All the companies we spoke to had high praise for Cardiff’s workforce which they regarded as enthusiastic, loyal, skilled and very hard-working. Our interviews also revealed that companies were seeking a great work/ life balance for their employees. They highly valued Cardiff’s location, not just from a logistical point of view with its fast road and rail connections to London and the Midlands, but also in terms of the quality of life benefits of living in a city which has both a stunning coastline and easy access to the Brecon Beacons National Park. Tina Hatton Evans, director at SNC-Lavalin’s Faithful & Gould business said “MIPIM provides a fantastic opportunity to connect with influential players from the worldwide real estate market as well as providing a platform to share and understand more about exciting industry initiatives. Faithful+Gould has attended MIPIM for many years and we are delighted that our Cardiff office will this year be supporting Cardiff Council; helping to raise the profile of our unique city and to showcase the enormous opportunity that it presents. Our regional director, Paul Lavelle, will be attending MIPIM on behalf of Faithful+Gould’s Cardiff office and I have no doubt that he is looking forward to making new key connections and building on existing relationships before, during and after MIPIM.” FAITHFUL & GOULD RETURN TO PROVIDE MIPIM SUPPORT CONTACT US [email protected] I 02920 788577 I www.investincardiff.com I I @investincardiff investincardiff SO WHAT IS IT ABOUT CARDIFF THAT MAKES IT THE BEST LOCATION FOR YOUR BUSINESS? We have competitive businesses, from HQs of FTSE 100 businesses, to the new wave of challenger banks, to emerging fin-tech, to production companies supplying the world’s leading streaming services. We also have a quality of life that is unsurpassed. The same story is true for our city-region. What we also know is that much of our potential is untapped. At MIPIM we have an unrivalled opportunity to outline our plans for the city and the region. Our administration’s Capital Ambition document outlined our ambition to move the city economy up another gear, with a strategic focus on driving the city’s economy forward to create more and better jobs. This will involve growing the city centre as a location for businesses, refreshing the vision for Cardiff Bay to establish it as a leading UK urban destination, delivering a new indoor arena, supporting university investment in innovation, and establishing a new industrial strategy for the East of the city. The Cardiff Capital Region Economic Growth Partnership has also recently unveiled its Industrial and Economic Growth Plan that outlines its ambitions for the South-East Wales economy. The Team Cardiff responsibility in MIPIM is to make sure we get our voice heard, our potential understood and our ambitions recognised. We have a strong agenda already established for the event, but we also have the opportunity to network with the worldwide development and investment community. Let’s make sure we seize this opportunity!” Cllr Huw Thomas Leader, Cardiff Council TEAM CARDIFF HEAD TO MIPIM
