Culture Change in Charter Schools
Today’s Objectives

To share how ZOOM! is helping schools collect,
manage and use data at their schools

Strong Data Driven Cultures

Schools often don’t have
enough resources,
technology, tools, & know-
how to collect, manage and
use data.
This image represents the
different layers that stand
between a school and
strong data use and culture.
True Data Driven Culture
requires strategic
development of each ring.

ZOOM! was Developed by CCSA Member Schools in Response to Member Needs
30 schools…
Over 6 months…
Testing 3 data systems.
− Chosen by lottery
− Over subscribed
− 28 from LA county
− 2 from San Diego
− Varied SES
− Rigorous group trainings
− Individual site PDs
− Continuous feedback
− Strong cohort community
4 years ago CCSA responded to a member survey
revealing a need for data support, leading to:

Ah ha! Teacher moments
Data reveal student needs
• 7th grade science teacher was able to spot classroom trends
• 4th grade teacher finally uncovered a student’s stumbling block in reading
• 2nd grade teacher found her new method for teaching fractions worked
Chart from SchoolCity, Inc
In our pilot, teachers made important discoveries:

Note: Chart from DataDirector
In our pilot school leaders found:
• They did not have Title I Data
• Effective ways to use school data in PDs to create “Institutional Memory”
and share lessons
Ah ha! School leader moments
Data reveal overlooked school trends

In our pilot, charter board members: • Began using the system to create a school accountability report card
• Used demographic data to evaluate and create intervention programs

Activity: Understanding Data Culture
Issues
1. Break up into 4 groups and receive a data culture
issue
2. Discuss how the data culture issue would look on
your campus
3. Discuss the variety of ways the issue may be
addressed
4. Share your results
Moving from Data to Instruction
How have ZOOM! & DataDirector helped schools
increase access, tools, will and skill at their
schools as teachers move from data to stronger
instruction in the classroom?

Moving from Data to Instruction Takes Strong Leadership
Do not assume instructional capacity will emerge
− Many educators will need more capacity building on how to use data
once they can access it
Use appropriate and relevant “Best Practices”
− Traditional best practices seminars are only valuable if they are
relevant and appropriate for the students’ needs
School leader must be an instructional leader
− School leaders need to spend significant time observing instruction
− Leaders coach teachers to use data most efficiently and effectively
Include students and families as part of the process
− Meta-cognitive pedagogy builds student achievement
− Parents and families are better able to support the child and school
when they are aware of the data1313Contact Rebecca Tomasini at [email protected] visit: www.myschool.org/zoom
Solid Culture Change Happens
Deliberately and Strategically
Wide variety of readiness− Culture of data use will vary and be slow and difficult to change
− Will to teach all students will vary teacher to teacher
− Skill to move from data to instruction tends to be weak
Needs Assessment− Training must begin with a needs assessment to ensure training is relevant
Tiered rollout− Accommodates a range of readiness and resources
Site Support− Data Leads at schools provide local support, reducing external support and
improving response time
− Refer individual consultants to school sites, as needed

Activity: Define an Action Plan for Moving to a
Culture of Data on your campus
1. Create a plan for achieving the ideal outcome
- Define the steps to achieving the ideal outcome
- Assign owners
- Build a timeline by assigning deliverables dates for each step
