The Sept. 7 Creston Valley Tour de Farm, led by Kootenay Young Agrarians (YA), will show just how easy it is to enjoy a balanced diet of local food.

On bicycles, participants will propel themselves from the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce to Lister to Erickson, visiting Kootenay Meadows, Full Circle Farm, Mo and Mikey Farms, JRD Farm and Root and Vine Acres (as well as, possibly, a winery) — covering

dairy, grain, meat and veggies, all within a 26-kilometre loop.

“It means we have the 100-mile diet beat by eight times,” said Laura Hannant, who co-ordinates the YA program with Nigel Francis.

The newly named Valley Community Services Society (for-merly the Creston and District Community Resource Centre Society) now owns a premises that houses administrative and some program functions. But it won’t get a permissive tax exemption from the town of Creston until 2017, if at all.

That was the message delivered to executive director Serena Naeve and finance and administration manager Justine Keirn at the Aug. 12 regular town council meeting.

Naeve and Keirn appeared as a delegation to outline the non-profit society’s many community services to people of all ages. A request to be exempt from paying the municipal portion of its property taxes was not considered by council, although simi-lar agencies do have exempt status.

Mayor Ron Toyota explained that council had adopted a policy to limit permissive tax exemption requests to a once-in-three-years window. He also cautioned that unless a future council increases the existing cap (1.75 per cent of total municipal taxes), full exemptions might not be available to non-profits.

From page 1“It will be at the discretion of the council at

that time,” he said.VCSS recently relocated to a renovated build-

ing on Pine Street from its longtime home above the medical clinic on 16th Avenue North.

Council Briefs•Eight recommendations from the previous

week’s committee of the whole meeting were adopted. The items were reported in last week’s Advance.

•Small donations were approved for the Creston Valley Thunder Cats annual golf tourna-ment and the Ducks Unlimited Canada dinner and auction.

•Finance director Steffan Klassen presented a report about the subsidy for users of the Prince Charles Theatre. The town’s subsidy of $5,000 last year has allowed the theatre “to hold its own”, keeping costs affordable and not eating into school district budgets, he said.

•Council directed staff to review the water rates and regulations bylaw and recommend updates to water conservation measures, metering considerations, enforceability and prohibition of water-wasting apparatus like swamp coolers.

•Membership in the International Selkirk Loop was renewed at a cost of $100.

•Creston Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Jared Riel reported that a series of events designed to increase public awareness about the fire depart-ment has been “a huge success”. The Hot Summer Nights program has been held in sev-eral locations, attracting local residents and chil-dren to check out fire fighting equipment and learn more about the services provided.

•Three bicycle rings currently in stock will be installed at strategic downtown locations.

•Updated bylaws for the parks, trails and public places and fees and charges amendment were adopted.

•Proposed first, second and third readings of an updated development cost charges bylaw were referred to the next meeting after Coun. Jerry Schmalz expressed concern that some por-tions seemed to conflict with what council had approved during previous discussions.

The Creston Valley is home to a large

agricultural industry and requires many short-term job posi-tions during the har-vesting season. A criti-cal component for employers with time-sensitive needs is an up-to-date casual labour list.

WorkToday.ca is a new online service that provides a digital casual labour list where job seekers can add their contact infor-mation for 24 hours at a time to ensure poten-tial employers have access to the most cur-rent pool of workers possible.

WorkToday.ca is a free service to both job seekers and employ-

ers and is supported through local commu-nity sponsorship. The digital casual labour list is viewable by any website visitor and the information auto-matically is removed after 24 hours, keep-ing the site clean and relevant. Job seekers can also specify the types of work they are able to perform, which helps employers quickly sort the list to identify workers that may suit their needs.

“There is a huge need for short-term workers in the Creston Valley, not only for agricultural work but also for occasional property maintenance or as support for those with mobility issues,”

said Warren Bruns of Kootenay Employment Services.

The Creston Valley will be a trial area for this service and it’s expected to expand to more communities in the near future. Visit WorkToday.ca to find a temporary worker or sign up for casual labour opportunities.

Carl Erickson and Friends will be

presenting a farewell concert at the Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 30.

“Sad I am to say this will be my last performance at the Snoring Sasquatch for a while, as I am going to the West Coast to

spend time with fami-ly,” said Erickson. “Nonetheless, I intend to have fun with all my friends here in Creston and the folks I will be playing with.”

Several familiar faces will join Erickson for the concert.

“I’m a fortunate guy to have such good

people to play tunes with: Gary Snow on bass, Adam Koenig on drums, Micah Snow on guitar, Donnie Clark on trumpet, and me … on tenor saxo-phone and guitar, along with our friend Velle Weitman, who will join us as our guest.”

The concert will

feature old favourites and a few new tunes, as well as a new origi-nal song.

Tickets are $15 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $18 ($7 for teens) at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

SubmittedThe Creston Valley’s Elizabeth Browne participates in beef senior showmanship for the 4-H Club. The 104th annual Fair at the Pacific National Exhibition is rooted in agriculture and proudly celebrates that each year during the 4-H competition. The annual summer fair, an end-of-summer tradition for generations of British Columbians, features over 700 shows, exhibits and attractions that are free with admission. The 2014 Fair at the PNE runs through Sept. 1.

Criminal Justice Branch special pros-ecutor Peter Wilson approved criminal charges against four individuals associ-ated with Bountiful on Aug. 13.

The charges allege that polygamy and the unlawful removal of children under the age of 16 years from Canada with the intention that an act be com-mitted outside Canada would be an offence against section 151 (sexual inter-ference) or 152 (invitation to sexual touching) of the Criminal Code.

Winston Blackmore and James Oler both face charges of polygamy, while Oler also faces a charge for the alleged unlaw-ful removal of a child from Canada. Brandon Blackmore and Emily Crossfield each face a charge for alleged unlawful removal of a child from Canada.

The charges were sworn in Cranbrook, and first appearance is expected to be Oct. 9 in Creston.

Regarding the charges, Blackmore gave a statement to Global News string-er Mike Turner in Cranbrook Aug. 14, the Cranbrook Daily Townsman reported.

“Yesterday being August the 13, 2014,

after learning that the RCMP was look-ing for me, I went into the local detach-ment of the RCMP in Creston at 7 o’clock, at which time I surrendered my pass-port, and was charged with the same charge I was charged with five-and-a-half years ago — that being polygamy, and nothing more,” Blackmore said.

“Anyone who knows anything at all about the original doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-day Saints, which is the doctrine I follow, knows good and well that the principle of plu-ral marriage and congregational living, where people work together for the good of the whole with a common view of taking care of everybody is part of that doctrine. Those are basic founda-tions of my faith.

“There is really nothing more to be said.”

He added, “I certainly get tired of this constant legal battle.”

The new charges came after the RCMP received a large volume of docu-mentation seized by U.S. authorities after investigations into members of the Fundamentalist Latter-day Saints in Arizona, Texas and Utah.

Crown counsel received two RCMP reports in July 2013 and January 2014. Some of that material was based on evi-dence considered in earlier charges against Blackmore and Oler, thrown out in 2009 when a judge ruled former B.C. attorney general Wally Oppal did not have the authority to appoint a third special prosecutor after the previous two recommended against approving charges.

Wilson declined to approve other criminal charges for alleged offences of sexual exploitation after determining the standard for approving charges had not been met.

He was sworn in as special prosecu-tor in January 2012 with a mandate to offer legal advice to police during their investigation of individuals associated with Bountiful, and assess the possible prosecution of sexual exploitation and alleged offences against minors in the community. His role was expanded two weeks later to include consideration of potential offences under the polygamy provisions of the criminal code.

A playable piece of art was unveiled in downtown Creston on Tuesday — a public piano in the Canyon Street Walkthrough. Brightly painted by artist and Creative Fix owner Brandy Hunt, the piano is available for all ages and skill levels to enjoy.

“I wanted it to be colorful, childlike

and fun,” she said in a brochure handed out at the event. “I poured my heart into it hoping that it will get noticed, but more importantly, played. I love the fact that this piano will inspire others to reveal their creative talents in the down-town core. So awesome.”

The unveiling was combined with an art show featuring 15 paintings by Hunt, with the theme “Sounds from the Valley”, and featured musical entertain-

ment by Creston Community band leader Monte Anderson on the new piano, after which members of the pub-lic had a chance to try it out.

The project was spearheaded by the Creston Rotary Club, which worked alongside the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Town of Creston to bring it to reality. Panago and Pharmasave also sponsored the unveil-ing, which was MCed by Marilin States.

week, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday. Most were on the East Shore of Kootenay Lake.

“Our members have been working hard on this,” he said.

Funding comes out of a provincial pot of money that allows local police to use a helicopter to identify locations from the air and then use GPS co-ordi-nates to locate the grow-ops with their vehicles or on foot.

On Aug. 12, 400 plants were cut and removed from four spots in the Crawford Bay area. On Aug. 14, four more grow-ops near Gray Creek were dismantled, removing 433 plants. Another patch with 215 plants was taken out on Saturday, pushing the week’s total to more than 1,000 plants.

RCMP do not provide street value estimates for marijuana plants, but other sources estimate a single plant can have a $1,000 value when the product is sold on the street. That estimate indicates that more than $1 million was poten-tially removed from the local drug mar-ket last week.

Although this is only my second summer residing in the beautiful Creston Valley, I have come to look forward to the annual pilgrimage of young people into the valley during cherry harvest season. I love the patter of French and

Spanish at Extra Foods, folks gathered around a guitar on Canyon Street, the colourful clothes, impossible hairstyles, funky automo-biles and, in general, the new energy and enthusiasm that these young people bring to our normally quiet town.

Of course, wherever large numbers of travellers congregate, the potential for con-flict with locals rises. Litter piles up, public alcohol and drug consumption increase, kids are busted peeing (or worse!) in bushes, there are noise complaints, we get crowded out of our favourite swimming spots, and rumours of increased incidences of theft and vandalism proliferate.

Personally, I don’t hold a varied and dispa-rate group of people responsible for the crimes or misdemeanours of a few. But, let’s be hon-est, too often it is innocent locals minding their own business — and who may receive, at most, indirect benefit from these hard workers’ labour — that are left to clean up the mess. Just last year, for instance, the library was targeted by vandals following a dispute with a particu-lar orchardist.

Access to communication and information technology is vital to visitors travelling far from home — possibly for the first time in their lives — and the library is pleased to offer this access to visitors and residents alike. Equally important are access to public washrooms, clean water or just a cool place to rest after a hard morning’s work. Regardless of where a person is travelling from or how long they are staying, they are welcome to take their respite at the library.

The question is how we can effectively deal with the increased demands on library services and facilities while continuing to meet the expectations of our primary stake-holders, the long-term residents of the

Creston Valley. Our approach attempts to combine pragmatism with smart planning, with a dash of good humour thrown in.

When redesigning the front exterior of the library, for example, we configured the seating specifically to reduce conges-tion around the front entrance. It was awkward asking library visitors to sit elsewhere when the only seats are right at the front entrance!

We also re-installed a sink and toilet in what had been the audio-video room (moved to another unused office space) to better meet demand during the peak season, and installed a drinking fountain in the front foyer, which is loved by local children and pickers alike. Multi-use furniture, such as a coffee table that can double as a bench, pro-vides much-needed additional interior seat-ing. We have also worked closely with our neighbours in the Regional District of Central Kootenay office next door to address their concerns.

Some of the most effective ways to address potential conflicts are the simplest, like provid-ing additional garbage and recycling bins over the weekend. Some folks still choose to litter, but having sufficient garbage bins available has cut down on the amount of visible litter considerably.

We still have issues — smoking around the front entrance is one ongoing issue — and I very much appreciate those of you who have taken the time to voice your con-cerns to me or another staff member. I know that for each person who raises a concern, there are 20 others who agree but are too Canadian to speak up. If you have a con-cern, I encourage you to let us know so that we can fix it!

In the meantime, I am resolved to enjoy these annual few weeks of craziness. All too soon, everything will go back to normal, and we will have our quiet valley back to our-selves!

From page 1In addition to the range of food,

cyclists will also get to see farms in various stages of development. Kootenay Meadows, for example, is fairly new, while Full Circle owners Drew and Joanne Gailius have been at it for years and are considering their next step.

“It gives a sense of what farming is like at all different moments in life,” Hannant said.

The tour will be a good opportu-nity for local food buyers to meet the producers, but Hannant expects out-of-towners to take part, as well.

“A lot of people are interested in farming and kind of understand-ing that Creston is a hot spot,” she said.

YA has hosted several events at east and west Kootenay farms over the summer, and a Salmo event attracted a guest from someone studying agriculture at Washington State University in Pullman, Wash., a few hours south. And a Slocan event was attended by an older couple from Calgary; for them, age didn’t matter.

“They were curious about aban-doning their lifestyle and getting back to the land,” she said. “Farming and the local food movement are bridging all sorts of divides.”

Tour de Farm is YA’s final summer event (to be followed by a series of land-linking workshops in the fall), and while it could have been a bus or a self-guided driving tour, Hannant feels that it accomplishes much more as a cycling tour.

“I think it wouldn’t bring home to people that we can be close to home and eat well,” she said.

And if this one goes well, she hopes it could become an annual event.

“In lots of other parts of the world, they do slow food tours like this one,” Hannant said. “We could do this every year for years and not stop at the same farm twice.”

Registration for the free event is not required, but Hannant recom-mended joining the event on Facebook for updates. Tour de Farm starts at 10 a.m. Sept. 7, and should last until 4 p.m. For more informa-tion, contact Laura Hannant or Nigel Francis at 1-604-800-2773 or [email protected].

Page 6: Creston Valley Advance, August 21, 2014

On the front page of last week’s edition of the Advance we celebrated a good thing for our community, the announcement that a six-unit housing complex is about to be built to pro-vide low-cost rental housing for families. In the photo on that page are the usual suspects — our mayor, our member of Parliament, representatives of groups who have made a large contribution in bringing the proj-ect to the construction stage. Absent from that photo is our member of the legislative assem-bly.

In the week prior to the for-mal public announcement, I was informed the ceremony would be tak-ing place and provided a list of people who would be in attendance for the photo opportunity. When I asked BC Housing for more information about the project so we could help spread the word and perhaps encourage other members of the public to attend the event, I was told that no informa-tion would be available beforehand. Not even a mention of how many liv-ing units would be built. There have been too many “problems” arising from the early release of information in other communities so BC Housing no longer does that, I learned. Oh, and would we be so kind as to send their media folks a copy of anything we intended to print from what meagre information we had, presumably so they could make sure we weren’t spilling the beans by using informa-tion from local sources? Uh, no.

When I noticed the absence of Nelson-Creston MLA Michelle Mungall on the list of invited dignitar-ies I contacted her to see whether she had been invited. No, she said. Opposition MLAs are typically shut out of these photo ops, which are

treated by this government as public relations opportunities for members of the governing party. The fact that some constituencies are not represent-ed on the government side of the leg-

islature is a minor inconvenience. In our case, Kootenay East MLA and Minister of Pretty Much Everything Bill Bennett (or Premier Bill, as I have come to call him) would be on hand. (He didn’t attend, being busy with the mine tailings pond disaster in north-ern B.C. In his place at the podium and the group photo was his constitu-ency assistant from Cranbrook.)

Mungall admitted she does find being excluded from announce-ments that affect members of the constituents she was elected to rep-resent insulting. But we have to pick our battles, she added, so opposition MLAs don’t typically crash the par-ties or make a big issue out of their exclusion. Let’s just admit this is a government with very little class, and move on, I suppose.

My annoyance with BC Housing has been building in the last few years, ever since it oversaw construc-tion of a larger housing project, this one south of the railroad tracks and Cook Street. In its infinite wisdom, it then turned over management of the complex to a non-profit organization based in Cranbrook, apparently because Creston has no one capable of

taking on the job. So whatever profits are to be made from managing the facility go to benefit people in the Cranbrook area, and our local resi-dents live in a place where the man-

agement people are not our friends and neighbours, but strangers who have no direct commitment to our community.

It all got a little ridiculous earlier this year when residents in these units built with public funds were informed that some were breaking rules. The man-agement organization has rules for everything it seems, includ-ing a restriction on the number

of chairs residents can have on their postage stamp-sized patios. It’s an easy number to monitor: one. Yup, one. Apparently people who qualify for subsidized rental aren’t entitled to have a few friends over to sit out on their patio. Or at least to sit on chairs on the patio. The rules might not preclude visitors from sitting on the ground, I suppose.

I am aware of a number of com-plaints some residents have about the care and maintenance of the grounds around the complex, and it seems like this becomes an out of sight, out of mind issue for manag-ers who live an hour’s drive away from here. The folks who live in those units qualify for rental subsi-dies based on their own personal economic circumstances. But the fact that they qualify doesn’t mean they should be treated like second-class citizens. They are our friends and neighbours and they deserve better.

And better, nice people at BC Housing, would mean having prop-erty managers who actually live in our community.

This summer, the temperature isn’t the only thing heating up. The fight to keep Jumbo wild is sure to heat up as the proponent’s days become numbered.

This October, Jumbo Glacier Resort will lose its environmen-tal certificate necessary to con-tinue pursuing its goal if it does not build something “substan-tive”. The legislation is clear and the one extension allowable under the law was granted in 2009. The court decisions have also been clear in what is “sub-stantive” construction. That said, JGR is under extreme pressure to build something substantive before October. We are under the same pres-sure to stop them.

My colleague Norm Macdonald, MLA for Columbia River-Revelstoke, and I have been using every tool in the legislature to voice the region’s desire to keep Jumbo wild. Recently, Norm sent a letter asking the government for details about the ways in which they have been monitoring and approving the many environmental conditions JGR has to meet prior to construction. We’re wanting the government to rely on more than a self-report by JGR.

Of course, it is not just your local MLAs who have been standing up for Jumbo. Local advocacy groups have been at the forefront of the work to keep Jumbo wild, and their ongo-ing dedication requires our support. Most importantly, the Ktunaxa have

been clear that they will not let go of their spirituality and sacred places, and they especially need our support in an era of reconciliation.

Keeping Jumbo wild has been our local call for more than half my lifetime, and now is no time to stop. Presently, the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations is repair-ing the road to Jumbo Pass trailhead after it was washed out and covered with avalanches in several locations. Once this work is done, JGR will com-mence its roadwork, with plans to replace a bridge that was removed with the purpose to protect the area from vehicle access that was having negative impacts.

While this is going on, the fake town of Jumbo’s mayor and council is quickly passing zoning permits for a ski lift and day lodge in the Jumbo Valley. The public meeting was set for Aug. 6 in Radium (because, of course, there are no people or buildings in Jumbo). It therefore appears that JGR has abandoned last year’s plan for

developing a “boutique hotel” on Farnham glacier. But, I am sure that the fake town appreciated all of the paper-work from last and this year to justify

the funding they get from the Liberal government.

I find it most interesting that while we have steadfastly said no to a ski resort on Jumbo, new ski hills like Golden’s Kicking Horse Resort have fully devel-oped and now enjoy skiers on the slopes because the region wanted them. Others, like our local Whitewater Ski Resort have expanded, and we enjoy the

backside chair. This goes to show that our preference to keep Jumbo wild isn’t because we don’t like skiing and outdoor recreation, but because JGR is a wrong-headed development.

Nevertheless, its few backers keep pushing it through long after the pro-posal should have died a natural death. They have their friend, Liberal MLA Bill Bennett, helping them every step of the way. And I will not let it go unsaid that his government’s lack of responsibility to the public in favour of a few friends is irresponsible at best.

With time ticking, it is this summer that our winter sport, our local econo-my and our environment need us all. Keeping Jumbo wild has been our fight for more than 23 years. Let’s win it.

Several years ago, one of my daughters remarked, “Mom, could you maybe write your story for us? We don’t know who you were before we were born!” I guess that’s something most of us don’t think about unless we’re asked, but it’s really important to the kids to have some parental background — with a few exceptions, of course!

So, with some enthusiasm I began My Story: Rambling Memories of Mary Underhill. Some 20 pages later, I stopped, having reached only the first eight years of my life!

To the Editor:(Re: “Biz owner embarrasses senior”,

page 7, Aug. 14)I read, with interest, the letter written

by Sheila Barling regarding her experi-ence with an uncaring, patronizing and, yes, rude business owner. Coincidentally, her story was published on the day three visiting friends, myself and two others were subjected to deliberate “unkind-ness” by another Creston business owner. Maybe some Creston businesses have enough customers already and just don’t want any more?

Our story: A fellow and his wife from Kimberley, on their way to Kootenay Lake, noticed his cousin from Castlegar standing on the sidewalk in town. He rolled down his window, yelled at her, “Wait there. I will turn around and come back.” This cousin was with three lady friends, including myself. The four of us were having a reunion in our hometown, having graduated from Prince Charles Secondary School many moons ago. Because we were standing in front of a local business, the cousin came back and parked his SUV in the parking lot at the front of the business.

He and his wife had also lived in Creston when growing up, so all six of us stood at the edge of the parking lot having a great chat, trying to catch-up — “Where are you living now? What are you doing?” and so on.

After approximately 10 minutes of animated conversation, the owner of the business came out and gestured to the owner of the SUV to come over to him. Was there a problem? We weren’t block-ing access to the business and we cer-tainly were not being rowdy! After a brief conversation between the two men, the SUV owner came back and informed us that the business owner had told him to move his vehicle, that his parking lot was for customers only. We were stunned! There was only one car in the parking lot and there were no customers coming and going during the short time we had been there. Naturally, in the face of such an “order” we said our goodbyes and moved on.

This letter is to inform the business owner that because of his one moment of unfriendliness and unnecessary ban-ishment of tourists from his parking lot, he will quite likely lose more than one potential customer in future.

As mentioned, the owner of the SUV lives in Kimberley, his cousin lives in Castlegar, one visiting reunion gal lives in Toronto and the other lives in New York. All have had occasion to visit Creston in the past and will no doubt return with other family members meeting them here in future. The gal from New York had over a dozen fami-

ly members arriving in Creston on the weekend, looking for accommodation.

For someone who runs an accom-modation business, your non-accom-modating attitude will definitely be remembered and I daresay no recom-mendations will be forthcoming.

Gail BosgraCreston

To the Editor:I am writing to commend Lorne

Eckersley on his Aug. 7 column (“Aren’t they clever?”). I believe he hit the nail on the head with that piece about the B.C. government and the BC Teachers’ Federation.

When I heard on the news what the B.C. government was going to do if no agreement was reached in time for September school opening, I immedi-ately thought the government might just as well have announced that it had no intention of negotiating fairly with the BCTF. I think Mr. Eckersley put it very well. Thank you.

Shirley DouthwrightCreston

Well, that was an interesting few weeks as we recently partook in our favourite recreation activi-ty of camping and fishing. This was a bucket list trip to Haidi Gwaii, formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, so along with a couple other couples, we

strapped our bright orange kay-aks to the top of our campers and headed west (young man). Definitely a place to check out as far as culture, history and of course scenery, but not for the faint of heart when it comes to visiting many gas stations across the province — culminating in Masset with $1.77 per litre. I did have to agree with the operator there who summed it up with. “That’s the price you pay for liv-ing in paradise.”

So, what might be a tie to our community complex? I would have to say it was about the third day on

the island, early morning, watching the surf roll in on north beach with the first steaming cup of coffee. Turning and stepping on a log that happened to be covered in moss (because the moss even has a layer of moss in some places), I found myself lying on my back holding

an empty cup of coffee. Shortly after that, I dis-covered I was now blessed some exquisite pain in my knee and hip, and was thinking I had just finished any chance of kayak-ing or hiking for

the rest of the trip. It took about a day or two, but I was back to about 90 per cent and was able to enjoy the balance of the adventure.

I most certainly attribute the quick recovery to the fact we exer-cise and swim regularly at home — it drives home the fact that you need to maintain yourself on a regular basis in good condition, no different than you would maintain your vehi-cle before a long trip. Face it: Many people put more money into their car than they would think of spend-ing on themselves at staying fit.

From page 9Heck, you don’t have to spend any-

thing on staying fit if you don’t want — maybe just an investment in a good set of runners. It pays off. Really.

One of the other health benefits you

will derive from travelling comes from meeting new people and seeing new things. New experiences help the brain grow new connections and let me tell you, as you get older, you need all the new con-nections you can get.

Speaking of connections, it never ceas-es to amaze me about the small world syndrome; in fact we started to call it the “Creston Connection”. At one point, at a

campsite 30 kilometres down a forestry road where you had to dodge 12-foot-wide logging trucks and go down a hill with a 25 per cent grade to get to, we discovered the campers on one side were from Kimberley and shared mutual acquaintances, and the camper on the other side was a shipbuilder from Steveston who turns out knew, very well apparently, the cousin of one of our trav-

elling partners. Later, in Masset, the owner of the restaurant up there over-heard us mention Creston and the next thing you know, her husband is chatting with us as he had gone to school with the brothers of one of our travelling partners (yes, same one!).

On another occasion, we chatted with a family out in the boonies on Moresby Island; one had lived in Creston as a

child and knew a few names still around here. Later, on the ferry back to the mainland, I struck up a conversation with a fellow wearing a Korean vet hat (as my father-in-law George is a vet, as well) and turns out he is a cous-in to a local Creston resident who used to be president of the New Horizons group at Rotacrest Hall that we worked closely with (as well as know-ing a raft of other people here).

Finally, in Prince Rupert, we took a drive down to a pub-lic dock to look at all the fishing boats, trawlers and contain-er ships and started chatting with an old-timer on a boat who had a startling resem-blance to Popeye. Turns out his connec-tion was that he was here in the mid-1960s or so paving the road over the summit when it went in.

Have a great week!Neil Ostafichuk is

the recreation supervi-sor at the Creston and District Community Complex.

Making Your House a Home for 69 Years!

FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

Footlighters Theatre Society is pleased to announce that the next production of its 20th season is Cinderella, set for Prince Charles Theatre Dec. 4-6, a followup to 2007’s highly successful Jack and the Beanstalk and the equally successful Aladdin in 2011. The plot loosely follows in the traditional telling of this children’s classic and is not a retelling of the popular Disney version.

Set in Crestonia many years ago, Cinderella is the poor stepdaughter to her ever demanding stepmother and her two notoriously ugly stepsisters. Following a

proclamation made by the King and Queen that Prince Charming should marry before taking over the throne when his parents retire, a grand ball is held to which every eligible unmarried female is invited. Naturally, Violet and Petunia (the two ugly stepsisters) wear their finest, while the poor girl who lives among the cinders is left at home, until her Fairy Godmother intervenes and dresses her in a most beautiful gown.

At the ball, Cinderella and Prince Charming fall in love at first sight but Cinderella suddenly bolts from the ball-room as the clock begins to strike mid-night. Of course, after an exhaustive

search from Wynndel to Yahk, Prince Charming finally meets Cinderella again and they live happily ever after.

The adult roles include Cinderella, Prince Charming, the King and Queen of Crestonia, a Royal Announcer, three instructors in deportment, elocution and dance, a Fairy Godmother, and, of course, two ugly stepsisters and a wicked step-mother. Footlighters will leave no stone unturned in finding the ugliest actors to portray the ugly stepsisters. No doubt, makeup will help.

Although not absolutely necessary, most characters have the opportunity to sing as over 15 songs have been woven

into the script. Songs chosen include Busy Doing Nothing, Style, Elegance, Chu Chi Face, The Loveliest Night of the Year and Christmas Dream.

Auditions for adult characters will be by cold reading of excerpts from the script at 7 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Snoring Sasquatch. Be prepared to sing a song with musical director Simone Wiebe.

Children’s auditions will take place 3:15 p.m. Sept. 10 at at the Snoring Sasquatch. Watch for a further article and advertise-ment in the Creston Valley Advance.

If you cannot make the audition or to obtain further information, phone director Frank Goodsir at 250-428-5082.

Footlighters holding auditions for Cinderella

From page 9It’s amazing what happens when you start

writing about your past. You really can’t remem-ber much of your childhood when you first sit down at the keyboard, but the memories come flooding back after the first few words.

It is close to 14 years since Anne asked me that question, and after those 20 pages somehow my enthusiasm waned. However, I’m back on track again, having just completed a few pages on my high school years and my first job. Included are incidents like my brother, Pete, coming home after five years overseas in the Second World Way, being asked to go with my friend to Christmas choir practice and winding up as solo-ist (my mother sang in concert back in Victorian England and I inherited her voice), and having a huge crush on my math teacher!

This chronicle of mine is not just hard facts, but contains such things as my dream of becom-ing a neurosurgeon, the dream shattered because my parents were poor financially. Besides, women in the ’40s were expected to become nurses, secretaries or teachers, but definitely not doctors! In fact, at that time, there as only one woman in McGill University med school, and life was not very happy for her.

One important thing here is the medical his-tory of the family, not only just my own. For instance, during his teenage years, in an incred-ible growth spurt, my son had seizures, diag-nosed as petit mal. When my mother comment-ed that there was nothing like that on our side of the family, my father said, “Oh, yes, there was.” He had had the same thing happen in his teens! We need to let our children know as much as possible about our family’s medical history, and this is a good way of doing it.

Another interesting side to writing our mem-oirs is that we can have a lot of fun remembering the good times that have been tucked away in our “attic”, and perhaps dealing with some of the not-so-good times that we haven’t previous-ly wanted to look at. In other words, reminiscing can be a very healing exercise. I’m personally recognizing some unpleasant times in my life that I’ve not let go of completely, and now I can put it all down on paper, so to speak, and get it out in the open. It’s very freeing.

There are so many more memories tucked away in the recesses of my brain that have yet to surface, but I’m confident that they will, little by little, as I sit here at the keyboard. Of course, there will be some very personal experiences that I’ll keep to myself, but generally my life is unfolding for my children, grandchildren and, eventually, great-grandchildren to learn from and enjoy.

A key point here is to take pleasure in writ-ing your story, being as truthful as possible (a little shading/polishing of the facts is OK at times!) and being aware of those experiences that will have meaning for those who read it. So, pick up your pen or sit at the computer or record your memories onto a disc — whatever method is right for you. Just do it! Now! And have fun with it!

MemoriesRemember to Recycle!

With a little extra effort, recycling saves a lot!

One ton of recycled paper saves up to 17 trees. Recycling paper, plastic and metal saves tons of garbage from being put into local landfills. These are just a few of the many reasons to recycle and use recycled products. By cutting down on waste and using more eco-friendly products, we can keep our area and our planet a healthy, beautiful place to live.A reminder

Karen Margrethe Lenko

Karen was born in Innisfail, AB on July 5, 1938 to Danish immigrant parents Chris and Margrethe Pedersen. She grew up on a farm near the town of Spruce view, AB. She attended her elementary school years there and eventually went to Red Deer, AB to complete her high school education. She moved to Calgary, AB where she worked downtown at the Bank of Nova Scotia. During those years she shared an apartment with several girlfriends and enjoyed going out to dances and parties. She met her husband Victor at one such party and were later married in Calgary, AB in July of 1962 and continued to reside in Calgary until 1969.They eventually grew tired of city life and moved to Canyon for a short time until Vic found work with a construction company. With his work they moved all over BC starting in Wardner, then to several towns on Vancouver Island where they started a family. They continued on to Salmon Arm, BC, Longview, AB and then in 1983 nally settled in Canyon, BC as Karen wanted to be closer to help her parents. While in Canyon, Karen took care of her parents, children, garden, and small acreage of fruit trees while Vic was often away working. She could do everything from canning, sewing, cooking to ing a garden tractor. She especially enjoyed gardening, ordering seeds, then nursing seedlings in a greenhouse to plant large vegetable and ower gardens.

During her retirement years in Canyon she and Vic enjoyed traveling and went on a dream trip across Canada as well as to several other destinations in the United States. They both enjoyed learning about the local agriculture and history of the areas they visited and took hundreds of photos to capture their adventures. They visited their daughters and enjoyed spending time with family. In 1999 Karen took her daughters to Denmark to meet her family that she had rst met in 1959. Karen was also a world traveler, having been to parts of Europe, Cuba and on

a cruise through the Panama Canal. She eventually moved from Canyon to Creston and enjoyed her new home and friendly neighbours. Karen had many interests and was always up to date on current events and politics. She enjoyed hosting family at her home whether it was for a nice holiday dinner or a longer stay with her Danish relatives. She treasured her friendships with many lifelong friends from school and work and always kept in touch with friends and relatives. Karen enjoyed gardening and her ower garden. She was a strong supporter of education for women and encouraged her girls to attend university. She was a life long learner, having been involved with the Creston Women’s Institute for more than 25 years and more recently the T.A.P.S. program where she especially enjoyed Tai Chi, book club and painting.Karen was predeceased by her husband Victor; parents Chris and Margrethe Pedersen; her uncle Hans Jensen; brothers-in-law Ale Lenko, Andy Lenko, Roy Lenko, Archie Lenko, Peter Billey and Gordon Olsen; sisters-in-law Pearl Billey, Helen Olsen and Evelyn Lenko. She survived by her daughters Lynn Lenko and Christa Lenko; granddaughter Allison of Calgary, AB; in-laws Tom Lenko of Canyon, Wally and Lena Lenko of Canyon, Vicki and Bert Gaschnitz of Cranbrook, Marge Lenko of Stonewall, MB and Elva Lenko of Cochrane, AB.

They continued on to Salmon Arm, BC, Longview, AB and then in 1983 fi nally settled in Canyon, BC as Karen wanted to be closer to help her parents. While in Canyon, Karen took care of her parents, children, garden, and small acreage of fruit trees while Vic was often away working. She could do everything from canning, sewing, cooking to fi xing a garden tractor. She especially enjoyed gardening, ordering seeds, then nursing seedlings in a greenhouse to plant large vegetable and fl ower gardens. In 1999 Karen took her daughters to Denmark to meet her family that she had fi rst met in 1959.

Karen enjoyed gardening and her fl ower garden. She was a strong supporter of education for women and encouraged her girls to attend university. She was a life long learner, having been involved with the Creston Women’s Institute for more than 25 years and more recently the T.A.P.S. program where she especially enjoyed Tai Chi, book club and painting.Karen was predeceased by her husband Victor; parents Chris and Margrethe Pedersen; her uncle Hans Jensen; brothers-in-law Alex Lenko, Andy Lenko, Roy Lenko, Archie Lenko, Peter Billey and Gordon Olsen; sisters-in-law Pearl Billey, Helen Olsen and Evelyn Lenko. She is survived by her daughters Lynn Lenko and Christa Lenko; granddaughter Allison of Calgary, AB; in-laws Tom Lenko of Canyon, Wally and Lena Lenko of Canyon, Vicki and Bert Gaschnitz of Cranbrook, Marge Lenko of Stonewall, MB and Elva Lenko of Cochrane, AB. Celebration of Life

1947 ~ 2013

Thank YouThe family of the late Clarence Hagen would like to express our thanks to

family and friends for their many acts and words of kindness in the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

He left behind a legacy of wonderful memories and selflessness, and you honoured and comforted us with your attendance at his service.

We have so many people to thank. Pastor Gwen Brown for her guidance and conducting such a beautiful service, Eric Johnson for his moving solo, the Pallbearers for their much appreciated assistance, the organist for providing such beautiful music and the St. Stephens Presbyterian Church Ladies Auxiliary for serving a lovely lunch.

The tribute from the Legion was touching and so respectfully done - it was greatly appreciated.

The staff at the Swan Valley Lodge were exceptional in their care and compassion, Karen Trainer, Eric Johnson and Robin Quaedvlieg for their friendship and unwavering support and Dr. Shawn Walker for his years of medical assistance. Thank you to the friends and family who continued to visit Dad regularly and provided companionship throughout the years.

A special word of thanks has to go to Dennis and Gillian at G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel. Your professionalism, support and compassion was so amazing and helped us

honour our beloved father with dignity and love.

The family of Alcide (Al) Lemaire wishto sincerely thank the following:

Dr. Faye Mackay for all your care and compassion during Al’s illness.

To all my colleagues and staff at Swan Valley Lodge for all their support.

To all the staff at Home Nursing, Home Support, Medichair and the volunteers at the Creston Red Cross.

To Father Tom for the service; to Monte Anderson and the church choir for the music and singing.

To our best friends, Jeanne d’Arc and Andre for hosting the luncheon.

To Guy Roy, Dennis Kemle and staff of G.F. Oliver Funeral Chapel for your care.

Thank you to everyone who sent food, cards, fl owers, phoned, visited, offered and provided help, and everyone who made donations in Al’s memory. Thank you for the hugs, thoughts and prayers.

Thanks to the great ER and Palliative Care staffat Creston Valley Hospital, and to the

ECU staff at Cranbrook Hospitalwho looked after my wife Doris.

Thanks also to the ambulance attendants who, through thick and thin, transported Doris and me

from Creston to Cranbrook and back.Thank you to the doctors in Creston and

Cranbrook for their care and attention to Doris.Special thanks to Dr. Griffioen for his empathy, care, and especially his communication skills in explaining Doris’ problems since her diagnosis.

He deserves a medal. With thanks also to all the ladies who walked
