There hasn’t been a sturgeon-nosed canoe on the Kootenay River for decades, but a project by Lower Kootenay Band member Wayne Louie is about to change that.

He was commissioned by the Ktunaxa Nation to build a 12-foot canoe for the Sept. 28 Columbia Salmon Festival in

Invermere, and has been working on it since early June, completing the frame on July 24, with a goal of attaching the skin on the weekend.

“It’s made of all natural resources like my ancestors used to do,” said Louie, who has been assisted by Richard Jacobs.

That means no nails, screws or anything prefabricated is part of the design — the western maple and cedar frame is tied together with cedar roots and bitter cherry

bark (the electrician’s tape that held parts together during the construction was removed as those parts were tied together).

Once the white pine bark was attached, Louie said it would be cured in the shade for about 10 days — the sun would heat the canoe too quickly, twisting it out of shape — so the pitch from the bark would seal the skin, making the vessel waterproof.

A yearlong project to provide more cost-free leisure activities to Creston’s downtown core is closer to completion after the recent pav-ing of 1.3 kilometres of trails south of Cook Street.

Town engineering manager Colin Farynowski said on Tuesday that concrete pads are being installed this week so that park benches and trash containers can be installed.

The entire project, which includes the trails, an off-leash dog park, green gym fitness equipment, light-ing, signage and parking areas, is a partnership between the town and two local Rotary clubs. A $400,000 community and recreation grant was boosted with $134,000 in contri-butions from the Creston and Creston Valley Rotary clubs.

“The paving is the most visible aspect, so it seems like it all coming together quickly now,” Farynowski said.

Algonquin used birch bark, and the B.C. Coast’s Haida and Nisga’a used cedar, white pine bark was the covering of choice for the area’s First Nations.

“There was an abundance of white pine in the old days,” Louie said.

Named for its distinctive pointed ends resembling a sturgeon’s head, allowing easier navigation through bulrushes, canoes as big as 16 or 20 feet were used on the Kootenay and Arrow lakes.

They are also lightweight — Louie easily lifts it with one hand — making it easy to por-tage. That can make fishing a bit tricky, though, said Louie, who related a story of a band mem-

ber hooking a stur-geon that towed him all the way to Kootenay Lake.

“If you catch a five-pound fish, it will pull you,” he added.

A century ago, it wouldn’t have been uncommon to see sim-ilar canoes traveling along Kootenay River.

“Every household had a canoe because that was their trans-portation,” said Louie. “We weren’t horse Indians.”

Now in his late 50s, Louie hasn’t seen a white pine bark canoe on the river since he was a kid, and appreci-ates the opportunity to make one.

“It shows people we’ve still got our cul-ture,” he said. “It’s not extinct.”

lack of rainfall, the Arrow Creek water system is currently experiencing record high levels of demand, so all Creston and Erickson users are being asked to conserve water.

Stage 2 water con-servation measures are now in place for Creston and Erickson, which means:

•watering of lawns is permitted only from 6-10 a.m.;

•watering of gar-dens, trees and shrubs is permitted only from 7 p.m.-10 a.m.; and

can or hand-held hose is still permitted anytime.

“Stage 2 water conservation mea-sures will remain in effect until further notice and stricter water conservation measures will be implemented if demand does not decline,” said a press release from the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

There is no magic behind the organization of this year’s Picnic in the Park series of concerts each Monday in Millennium Park.

“I wanted to be able to sit and watch music being played,” said organizer Kaitlin Viers. “I went out and talked to local businesses and groups to pay for the park rental and then found musicians.”

She also co-ordinates music for the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market and some individuals and groups have agreed to play at the Monday night events, as well.

Viers organized similar concerts a few years ago, but this year’s Picnic in the Park series has really taken off.

“We were getting 50-80 people a night during July and it’s gone real-ly well,” Viers said.

Musicians play for, well, a song. Some are paid nominal fees but most play on the promise of food from the two food trucks on-site — Purple People Feeder and the Fork.

“Or sometimes we cook a meal for a larger group,” she said.

With a group of friends, Viers hopes to form a non-profit society to help sustain concerts in the future. She credits support from Home Hardware Building Centre, Snopek Auction Services, Kingfisher Used Books, the Creston Valley Fall Fair Association, the farmers’ market and the Town of Creston, and said

all the musicians deserve a hand for their fine performances.

Four concerts round out the summer series. Gerhard and the Missing Links play classic rock Aug. 4, a guitar evening featuring Emma Boutette, Peter Bodley and Joanne Drummond will be held Aug. 11, popular locals Peanut Butter and Jam take to the stage Aug. 18 and the heavy metal group Beardo performs Aug. 25.

“They promise to keep the vol-ume down!” she said about Beardo.

posts installed at entry points to prevent access by motorized vehicles, but there are no plans to restrict bikes, skateboards, scooters and the like.

“This is planned as a multi-use trai l ,” Farynowski said. “We will see if anything becomes an issue as time moves along, but there is no intent to restrict anything but motor-ized recreation vehicles at this time.”

The trail has two seg-ments. One, known as Steve’s Ride in memory of the late Steve Hernandez, a longtime town employee and avid cyclist, starts at a paved parking area off 11th Avenue South and runs down along Dodds Creek and up to the newly constructed dog park that is accessed from Cedar Street, west of the railway tracks. A parking lot has also been paved at that location. The other seg-ment starts at Cook Street, near the town’s RV park-ing site, and runs north of the railway tracks, behind Millennium Park, across Cedar Street and on to Creston Valley Public Library.

A green gym, featuring sturdy outdoor equipment similar to the one in

Centennial Park, will fea-ture 17 pieces constructed by Triactive Fitness. Signage will include instructions on how to use each piece for a healthy outdoor workout.

A fountain is being installed inside the dog park this week and just outside the fence will be a water bottle filling station for pedestrians. At regular intervals along the trails, park benches and trash receptacles will be installed, along with “dog waste centres” which include plastic bag dis-pensers.

A total of nine signs are under construction. Five will include trail maps and the others will feature gen-eral information. Lighting, with the same design as the current light standards behind Millennium Park, will be installed in the dog park and parking areas. Light standards will include banner extensions.

“Couns. Judy Gadicke and her committee are working on the designs for the banners now,” Farynowski said.

“This project is a tre-mendous example of how a community works togeth-er,” Mayor Ron Toyota said on Tuesday. “Our town staff did a great job of put-ting together a grant pro-posal that was successful and they have worked with volunteers and the Rotary clubs to create a partner-ship, to the benefit of our residents. They all deserve our thanks.”

Creston RCMP responded to 78 calls for service from July 21-27, Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Monday.

July 21•When patrolling police

saw a couple of vehicles parked under the Lower Wynndel Road underpass late at night, they checked up on them. One Saskatchewan driv-er was found to be prohibited and was arrested, and a small amount of marijuana was seized from the vehicle. The other vehicle also contained a small amount of marijuana that was seized. Its passenger was arrested for being drunk in public and held in police cells overnight. A substance found in the vehicle is being checked in a lab on the suspi-cion it is a narcotic.

•A chequebook was report-ed lost in Riondel on Ainsworth Road.

•An Ibbitson Street resident reported that in the last five weeks some items were stolen, including a gold ring, scissors and another ring with an aqua-marine stone.

•A conflict between two businesses was reported from Canyon Street.

•In an ongoing problem, a disoriented elderly female was reported walking on Canyon-Lister Road.

•About $5,000 in damage resulted when one semi rolled back into another at the weigh scales at Highway 3/95 junction.

•A metal detector was reported stolen from a vehicle on Ninth Avenue South.

•Extensive damage was sus-tained by a vehicle that collided with a moose on Highway 3. The driver was taken to hospi-tal for observation.

•When police conducted a well-being check on a 91-year-old female, they learned she was in the hospital.

•RCMP are asking anyone with knowledge about vandal-ism to benches at Erickson Elementary School to report it. Several male youths were reported to be prying boards from the benches, but had left before police arrived.

July 22•A vehicle backed into a post

in a Helen Street parking lot.•After contacting the regis-

tered owner about a complaint about a truck driving erratical-ly on Northwest Boulevard, police were told the employer would address the situation with the driver.

•Police assisted Vernon RCMP by executing an out-standing warrant on a male.

•A male reported to be caus-ing a disturbance at a business at the Highway 3/95 intersec-tion was gone when police arrived.

•A 71-year-old male who fell off a ladder at his Crawford Creek residence died as a result. The coroner’s office is investigating.

•A vehicle swerved to avoid a deer on Riondel Road and landed in a residential yard.

•A male who had no driv-er’s licence due to a prohibition for medical reasons was involved in a two-car collision. He was issued a ticket.

•The theft of items from a truck was reported from Moyie Lake.

•When a well-being check was conducted on 44th Street, the female resident was found in need of medical care and taken to hospital.

July 23• Police attended a Lyons

Road residence to assist Lethbridge police in an assault investigation.

•A male who reported being tailed by another male driver on Leadville Forest Service Road was advised to seek a peace bond in the courts.

•An 82-year-old male driver who reportedly pulled out from a Canyon Street parking spot without doing a shoulder check told police he didn’t notice another vehicle when he was located.

•Police concluded that dam-age to trees blamed on an Eighth Avenue South neigh-bour was more likely caused by insects and neglect.

•Police were unable to locate a southbound black and orange Mustang reported to be passing unsafely on Highway 3A near Twin Bays.

•A dog was reported to be locked in a vehicle on Pine Street.

•A complaint about the division of goods in an estate was made from Canyon-Lister Road.

•When police investigated a report of a nude female jumping off Goat River Bridge into the water, they found she was topless, which isn’t against the law. When told the complaint came from a moth-er with young children she voluntarily covered herself.

•A motor vehicle’s window was broken on 11th Avenue South.

•Investigating police deter-mined an argument, not an assault, had taken place at the Garland Bay campground.

•A male with an arrest warrant from a Vancouver Street assault turned himself into Creston police and was later released with a court order not to have contact with his victim.

July 24•A driver who did a

360-degree spinout on Highway 3 was located and told police he was unfamiliar with the

vehicle and not used to the gearing.

•A 93-year-old male died in his 12th Avenue residence. The death is not considered suspi-cious.

July 25•One hundred eighty-nine

marijuana plants were destroyed during the execu-tion of a search warrant near Sirdar.

•A resident’s dog bit a hiker who wandered onto private property on Rykerts Road.

•Campers squatting near Ash Street were gone when police arrived.

July 26•Noisy campers were

reported at a Riondel camp-ground.

•Damage to an ATM on 11th Avenue North was reported and a video surveil-lance camera picked up the action. The culprit turned himself in on his own accord and charges will not be pressed. He will work out res-titution with the business.

•Minor injuries were sus-tained when a driver fell asleep and rolled his truck over into a ditch on Highway 3. Damage was also sustained by the Harley Davidson motorcycle in the truck box.

•Police are attempting to locate a female after a male was assaulted on 20th Avenue South.

•A harassment complaint was made from 33rd Avenue North when, after an estrange-ment, a male changed a female’s Facebook account name and password.

•No injuries were reported when a vehicle went off Highway 21 and into the ditch.

•Police attended a Sixth Avenue North residence to keep the peace while a former tenant retrieved belongings.

July 27•Four people sustained

minor injuries in a collision on Highway 3 in which a driver attempted an unsafe left turn and struck an oncoming vehi-cle. Extensive damage was reported.

•A theft of jewelry from a Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road residence was reported to have occurred in the past year.

•Naked adults were reported to be swimming in the Goat River near Canyon Bridge.

•A female saw a driver open his door and hit her vehicle in a Cook Street park-ing lot, but didn’t get any information about the vehicle or driver.

•A driver was taken to hos-pital after he missed a curve on Mallory Road and put his motorcycle into the ditch.

•A dozen gunshots were reportedly fired into the river at Highway 3/95.

The PPL, an alternative acoustic rock band form Whitehorse, toured Western Canada last fall, and is back at it this summer, including a visit to Creston’s Snoring Sasquatch on Aug. 6.

The duo, Rich Jaeger and Marcus Steiner, has released two albums, most recently, The PPL II.

“There’s something dark in all of the songs on this album,” said Steiner. “But there’s some-thing innocent as well. In the end, Rich and I just want to put out music that speaks to a broader audience, music that gets people mov-ing, that can take you on a little trip outside of yourself.

“We are creating the type of music that we want to hear. The kind of music you want to hear. After all, you, me and everyone else are all the PPL.”

Tickets to the Aug. 6 concert are $10 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Black Bear Books and Buffalo Trails Coffee House, and $13 ($5 for teens) at the door, which opens at 7; the show starts at 8.

Moon Glow performs Torchlit throughout the Kootenays this summer. The duo has been per-forming together for five years, with Shauna Clapp on vocals and Eric Moon on guitar.

They perform classic and original arrangements of torch and jazz standards — and some more recent heartbreaks — with tingling soul.

Clapp channels the torch singers from the seedy speak-easies of New York and Chicago, where the path of love never did run true, and Moon’s guitar gives voice to the heights of love and the depths of loss.

Moon is a mild mannered teacher of computers and other technology but his first love is music. His mom sat him down in front of a piano at age five where he learned the basics. Then it was on to violin for six

years, three years of clarinet and sax in high school band, then a million years of guitar and voice. He also took a cou-ple years of music in college.

His musical influences are many and varied. Growing up in a very musical family, Moon had parents that listened to classical, big band and pop, and siblings that listened to opera, folk and rock. Early influences include Rush, Loverboy and Rick Springfield, and later, the Police, Sting and Dave Matthews Band. Guitar heros include Jimi Hendrix, Alex Lifeson, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Vernon Reid.

Moon has played in musicals including Grease (guitar), The Wizard of Oz (bass) and Guys and Dolls (Casio DH-100 horn), and was musical director for a pro-duction of Fiddler on the Roof.

Clapp has been singing since

she was asked to drop out of piano lessons after taking four years to learn middle C. She began voice training under Helen Negrave and has contin-ued throughout her life, and was voted the best unsigned vocalist in South Mirror Lake.

Shauna began performing a few years ago, and hopes to have a vibrant carreer in song under-way before she hits 70. She grew up with some of the music she now sings, as her grandmother was both a soloist and a lifelong musician. Her mother and daughter continue the tradition with piano. She has appeared locally at Starbelly Jam and Kaslo Jazz Festival as well as numerous local eateries.

If you asked me seven months ago whether I wore makeup, the answer would have been a resound-ing no! Makeup was fussy, it took too long, it smudged or rubbed off, it was expensive, and I wasn’t allowed to wear it, anyway. If you asked me now, the answer would be yes. Sort of. Not a full yes, because that gives the wrong impres-sion of why and how I wear makeup.

First off, vanity or self-image was not the inciting factor. I couldn’t care less if I go out in public without cos-metics all over my face. In fact, I still kind of hate wearing makeup, because it makes people assume that I do care.

No, the first makeup I bought was for my first onstage dance per-formance in February. I got it as part of the costume and a perfor-mance necessity, to keep from look-ing like a blur to the audience. As stage makeup goes, it was actually way, way less than I could have been wearing — three products ver-sus about eight or nine. After the performance, I started wearing the makeup for everyday, partly so I didn’t waste it, and partly because

putting it on is kind of fun. A full on, entire-face look can be almost therapeutic, although I only do it for projects.

So I wear makeup for recreation? Yes, something like that. Think of it

this way: Take a good look at an eye shadow palette. What does it look like? Paint. It looks like those dry palettes of paint.

Makeup looks like art supplies, and that’s how I view it. It’s art I can do on my face.

I still view most “normal” make-up as largely unnecessary and bor-ing; you end up looking like a per-fected version of you. What I prefer is using cosmetics in ways I’d never wear for everyday. Like covering my face in glitter and rhinestones for a star-inspired stage look, or trying to make myself look like a

dragon. It’s also a great way to get into the right mindset for a dance performance.

If I wore it for vanity or because “everyone else” does or to be noticed, I would own foundation that cor-

rectly matches my skin tone. Which it doesn’t, nor does my concealer. I find lipstick annoying, and I bought my mascara because the label said it was sweat-proof. On the occasional day I wear normal makeup, there’s a reason beyond trying to look better. I could be wearing it because the day is special for some reason and I want to

acknowledge that. Maybe I’m testing makeup I recently bought for a proj-ect. It could be part of my “theme” for the day or because I could colour-coordinate it with my outfit (it’s a perfectionist thing). Maybe I was just bored. What it boils down to is a tiny bit of art that I can incorporate into daily life.

My theory is that art can be any-thing, and if I’m an artist, then there’s no reason I can’t be my own canvas.

At Centennial Park the other day I ran into some friends. Your grandchildren must be here, one commented. I affirmed the obser-vation and they pointed out the area where theirs were. Then the conversation turned to the park itself. Isn’t this a great park. We agreed and chatted about how it has changed over the years, and then brought the rec centre into the mix. It, too, drew rave reviews, and I joked, “Yeah, life sucked for our kids.”

Twenty-five years ago our visits to Centennial Park were almost always for baseball. Our sons both played and Angela and I, like so many parents, would haul our lawn chairs to the sidelines to watch the games. The nearby roofed, partial-walled building — what’s that thing called, anyway? — was often packed with a family or community group that gathered to eat and recreate. It was a pretty simple place, but there always seemed to be something going on in the park.

Today, after years of fundraising efforts, Centennial Park is a terrific place to take the family on a sum-mer day. The Rotary splash park is the big draw, of course, but the colourful play structure is popular, too. Even the blue steel exercise machines, designed for adults, is a draw for young ones. Credit to Rotarians for their vision and hard work to transform the park into a great family getaway, and one that doesn’t cost a cent to enjoy. Pack up a lunch and the kids are happy to spend hours and hours of commer-cial-free time.

This week, the routine for our visiting grandkids, ages two and five, is to visit Centennial Park for a picnic and playtime, go back

home so the little guy can nap, and then drive down the hill to the community complex, where they spend another couple of hours in the water.

Again, thoughts turn to the many, many hours we spent there with our boys. Both took swim-ming lessons in the outdoor pool and they played hockey from fall to spring. Neither pool nor rink was extravagant but they served their purpose quite nicely. But walking into the rec centre now never fails to make me smile. When I think of the enormous efforts to get a borrowing approval to referendum, and to pass, I can’t help but feel admiration for the countless meetings and hours by a relatively small handful of volun-teers who were able to convince others that their vision would be of benefit to the entire community.

There are those who complain about their increased property taxes, but I am not one. I am proud that my community supported the referendum and that the visionar-ies didn’t cheap out with an “It’s good enough for Creston” attitude that inevitably placates the lowest common denominator. The Creston and District Community Complex continually raises the eyebrows of visitors who are astonished at its high quality. And, several years after its construction, I have yet to hear anyone say that they have vis-

ited a community with a nicer aquatic centre.

My time in the pool is restricted to these visits by our grandchil-dren, but I am more than happy to

slither around in the shal-low pool and lazy river, watching the five-year-old, who is pretty much a fish in the water, and the two-year-old, who can amuse himself endlessly by creat-ing little games that help him connect with the world around him. At two, the world is one giant test labo-ratory, and the pool is obvi-

ously a great place to conduct his experiments. On Monday, he spent a couple of hours amusing himself with three yellow plastic ducks, throwing, chasing, herding, amused as only a toddler can be. Every few minutes his sister would swim over to play, but he was equally happy to create his own amusement. As suppertime drew near, neither were in the slightest happy to leave the water, even with the promise that we would be back the next day.

So is life better for this new gen-eration, with the splash park and playgrounds at Centennial Park and the great facilities in the com-munity complex? Our kids never thought they were hard done by when they were swimming or playing ball or hockey, but both are thrilled that their children can come back to Creston and enjoy what we have today. And, for the grandparents, the improvements are genuinely appreciated. So three generations would give a enthusi-astic thumbs up for the facilities, and huge thank you to the people who have worked so hard to create them.

kind article about my past and recent artistic endeavours. I would like to mention some other great Creston or ex-Creston musicians who have par-ticipated in, and greatly enhanced, my various projects.

My son, Jason, has been key in all of my work. On the Howling Wannabes projects, Dave Lyons is a special musi-cal partner, writing songs, singing and playing guitar, violin and harmonica. Guitarists Mark Nicol, Rodd Keen, David Furlong and Rick Potyok, bass guitarists Allan Kimmel and Jan MacDonald, plus saxophonist and key-board wizard Aram Masse, and drum-mer Neil Ripski all deserve special mention for their help. The Sun Pipes for the Dreamers project has been sig-nificantly aided by Alison Masters’ recent editing.

Creston is alive with excellent musicians and songwriters. Very high quality albums have been produced by local musicians, including Mark Koenig, Elena Yeung, Brian Ferguson with Full Circle, and Peter Bodley, just to name a few.

The Creston Valley is alive with creative energy, and many talented artists in our valley are producing numerous original works of music, painting, sculpture, fiction, non-fic-tion, pottery and drama. All of this creative energy is contagious, and it is good to be here in the Creston Valley at this time.

To the Editor:When I first visited the Creston

Valley five years ago, I was enthralled by the beautiful mountains, friendli-ness of the people, and close relation-ships in the town. Now, as a father, I still value those things, but I value other things more. I value the enor-mous resources available to families, from the reading program at the library to swim lessons at the rec centre to the wonderful playgrounds.

Now I’m sure most readers can appreciate all of these things. So why am I writing this? I’m writing because my family just returned from three years in Indonesia. Most people are familiar with Indonesia from Bali vaca-tions, the book/movie, Eat, Pray, Love, or a friend or relative in the oil industry.

But our time in Indonesia really allowed us to revisit our view of Creston. You see, in Indonesia we had no grass for our children to play on. In fact, they were terrified of the grass when they first saw it here! In Indonesia, we had to drive an hour in traffic and pay $200 a month just to visit a playground. And not any special playground, but one with fewer activities than Centennial Park! In Indonesia, we couldn’t drink the water or brush our teeth from the tap. And we couldn’t find cherries for less than $40 a box.

I say all this not for anyone to feel sorry for us, but instead to reinforce the bounty of the Creston Valley and how much the community offers to its mem-bers. I also want to remind the resi-dents who have known nothing else how much really is here, and how much work it takes to keep and improve upon what already exists. It is the social capital that really shines, the associations, friendships, societies and neighborhoods that make this place special. And that cannot be captured in physical terms, but in the collective warmth that exists here in abundance.

L.J. Hanifan wrote about the importance of social capital in 1916 saying, “I do not refer to real estate or to personal property or to cold cash, but rather to that in life which tends to make these tangible substances count for most in the daily lives of people, namely, goodwill, fellowship, mutual sympathy and social inter-course among a group.” May this always flourish here, and may the good folks of this valley not take it for granted. I know that we never will.

Last summer a family in Ontario decided to live for a year without any technology developed after 1986, the year they, the parents, were born: so nothing digital, no iPhone, no Internet. No gadgets.

They said they wanted to get outside more, interact with each other, reclaim family life. They watch television on an old set with no cable, no DVD player. On family holidays they navigate with foldout maps, not GPS. The children are young enough that they don’t need a computer for school purposes. The father of the family also says it’s “way” cheaper. I have not found any updates on their experiment, but credit to them for giving it a try.

Other people embrace technology. They purchase a device or a system when it first becomes available and upgrade on a regular basis. I am not one of those people.

When colour TV was all the rage, I said black and white was just fine. When the remote control became the order of the day, I was aghast. People should get off the couch to change the channel, I thought. When air condition-ing became standard equipment in most car models, I resisted. Just open the windows, for Pete’s sake! And keyless

entry — are you kidding?I also fought the computer. I used to

write 12-page letters in longhand and get wonderful long letters in return. The computer changed that. All of a sudden, we didn't have time to write letters by hand. We were busy learning how to use the darn thing and sorting out the myriad wires and connections that formed a dusty tangle on the floor.

As I tiptoed into computer writing I could not argue against how much easi-er it became — that is, the actual physi-cal process of writing. It was such an improvement over the typewriter. Yes, you could write faster, move paragraphs around, delete and add words. No more Wite-Out, no more dread about mis-takes, no more carbon copies, no more wasted paper.

On second thought, the computer was supposed to make paper unneces-sary, but there’s something about the human condition that insists on copy in hand. Online sites say global consump-tion of paper has increased since 1980. Businesses and government seem unable to go paperless.

A business writer proposes eliminat-ing email as a means of communication for companies. She suggests instead postcards, mailed to targeted clients, to make the contact more personal and effective. I like the idea; anything to upgrade the lowly postcard, which has lost so much status it barely reaches recipient before sender’s vacation is over.

It took me literally years to stumble into an email account. When I finally signed on, I wrote longish messages, not exactly what the technology was meant for. And I received longish responses, which I appreciated. But I didn’t trust

its permanence. What if my hard drive crashed? So I started printing off the messages I wanted to remember, the interesting tidbits and creative emails that would eventually be lost forever.

After accumulating 30 centimetres of stacked paper, I stopped the printing process. Despite the angst, I learned to have faith in other methods of keeping important stuff while saving closet space and a tree or two as well. Maybe I was on the way to conquering my neo-Luddite tendencies? (Check out the original Luddites either online or in that encyclopedia you haven't yet discard-ed.)

Alas, this year my operating system, Windows XP, became old. A perfectly fine software bites the dust. Warnings about lack of technical support keep arriving and change is necessary. I face paralysis once again.

However, I have come a long way. Colour television is nice. Remotes are now ubiquitous, and we have acquired several. Unlocking the car the keyless way turns out to be an improvement I can live with. Air conditioning goes with climate change: opening the car windows is no longer satisfactory for trips across southern Alberta in July. A recent experience with GPS in a rental car was downright entertaining; it also saved time and argument.

Like that Ontario family, we don’t text or tweet or have a Facebook account. We still own a VCR. We don’t own a dishwasher. Unlike them, I won't be giv-ing up on e-mail any time soon, but am I ever going to buy a car that parks itself? Not in a million years. ;)

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man

Just because it is summer doesn’t mean that Cresteramics is not a busy, happening place. Our store on Canyon Street is serving many tourists, sharing original art-work of the community and answering questions about Creston. Cresteramics members and staff are positive community ambassadors. The agency centre on Railway Boulevard is open for business five days a week.

There are changes during the summer; members are away on holidays and so are staff, and there are different activities and places to go. All of the challenges are met by staff and supervisor Donna McCready through conver-sation, co-operation and sharing. Knowledge of each member’s

needs, preferences and abilities is evident in morning planning meetings. When I watch these committed people talk about what needs to be done each day, I am thoroughly confused, but they tackle the schedule, determine who needs what and get on with the day. All this happens while greeting members as they arrive, listening to stories or requests and answering questions.

Cresteramics has been recog-nized provin-cially as a leader in transitioning youth from school into adult programs and has a strong p a r t n e r s h i p with Prince Charles Secon-

dary School that facilitates this process. Cresteramics has also been hosting a summer youth pro-gram for a few years. This year, our youth summer program was fortunate to receive funds from Columbia Basin Trust Youth Initiatives Program to operate the program full-time. It is an oppor-

tunity for young people, still in school, to use the resources offered by Cresteramics to develop a peer group for activities and fun, learn about their community and work together on projects that serve their community. The Telus Community Action Team, based in Cranbrook, also con-tributed to this project.

Early in July, the project had already formed partner-ships with the Creston Valley Public Library, where they help out in the summer read-ing club and with the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market. This partnership has exploded to include the Town of Creston, local artists, business people and retailers. Farmers’ mar-ket manager Jen Comer jumped right in and helped develop a project, a budget and a presentation to town council. This project will see the youth group painting murals to cover the concrete walls on the north side of the market space. Local artists Cory Cannon, Allison Masters and Sandy Kunze consulted and contributed ideas. Brandy Hunt, graphic artist, busi-nesswoman and youth sup-porter, designed the mural and made color suggestions. Local businesses Home Hardware Building Centre

and Pyramid Building Supplies readily donated paint and other materials needed for the project. The willingness of individuals and businesses to contribute is typical of Creston. The young people involved are learning valuable lessons about sharing, caring and contributing.

At the opposite end of the age spectrum is another proj-ect that has also received com-munity support. The Creston-Kootenay Foundation donat-ed funds that will allow for the development of a space for members who, because of dementia symptoms, require a quieter, more sedate area. New floor covering, a music system, covered shelving and appropriate furniture will be purchased to provide an area with reduced noise and dis-tractions to make some of our members more comfortable. Thank you, Creston-Kootenay Foundation.

Our drumming circle con-tinues to be a favorite activity for many members every Thursday afternoon. Tambourines, shakers and a guitar are played along with drums and fun is had by all. In the summer, members trek to Centennial Park to make their music, and in the winter,

St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church donates space for this program, another generous donation within our commu-nity. If you have experience playing drums, we could use your help. Combining musi-cal training with the enthusi-asm of this group, the sky is the limit.

Over at the Know and Grow Community Farm at the College of the Rockies and at the community garden, our plots are producing plenty of vegetables that the members harvest and share. The crews that keep the benches and garbage cans clean for the town are proud of the work they do and appreciate the recognition Creston gets as being a clean, well-cared-for town. Some of our Cresteramics members also work at Spectrum Farms and the Creston and District Society for Community Living woodwork shop. They, too, are proud of the work they do and that they are con-tributing members of their community.

Cresteramics Society and its members, along with the sup-port they receive in this com-munity, help to make Creston a great placed to live.

The Many Bays Community Band host-ed a community band festival in Riondel on June 21 and 22, and it was a phenome-nal success!.

This band festival was an unusual one. At most festivals, the bands perform for each other; at this one, the musicians all played together. Over 70 musicians came to play piccolo, flute, clarinet, saxophone (alto, tenor, baritone), French horn, trom-bone, trumpet, euphonium, tuba, timpani and all the other percussion instruments. Co-chairs Don Clark and Deberah Shears had some sleepless moments wondering how and if it would all work.

On the Saturday morning, all the musi-cians were seated in the Riondel Community Centre auditorium, ready to play at 9:15 a.m. Their “job” was to follow four different conductors, know the music for the 12 compositions selected and blend with all the other musicians — that is quite an expectation.

Kimberley conductor Ian Ferrie was to start by tuning and warming them up. Very quietly, they waited together for those very first notes. The sound was incredible and magnificent! Within min-utes, the excitement of what was to come electrified the musical space. The week-end was a very emotional one for those musicians who had never played in a fully orchestrated concert band before.

The festival ended with a free public concert to showcase the musicians’ hard work over the weekend. The audience filled the space left, and by their applause and standing ovation, all knew that they were as moved by the music as the players. The

program was varied: marches to popular to classical, ending with the 1812 Overture.

The musicians had some social time during the weekend that included a Friday night jam session at Bob’s Bar and Grill, and meals with lively conversation at Dutch Harbour Camp in a perfect, beauti-ful Kootenay Lake setting. Before the

weekend was over, the other bands were talking about hosting this band festival next year.

Congratulations to Ian Ferrie and his Kimberley Community Band, Monte Anderson and his Creston Community Band, Gail Elder and his Slocan Valley Community Band, and Don Clark and his

Many Bays Community Band. The Many Bays Community Band did an excellent job of organizing and hosting the first community band festival.

The event was sponsored by the Regional District of Central Kootenay, Columbia Basin Trust, Nelson and District Credit Union and the BC Band Association.

The Creston Valley Slo-Pitch Association’s 2014 season recently ended, with Krush being at the top of the league’s regular season A pool and the playoffs.

With a 10-1-1 record, Krush placed ahead of the D-Bags (9-2-1) and Rents

and Bambinos (7-1-4), the same order those teams placed in the playoffs.

By B. Mitchell CarlsonThe F-150 has been the best-selling pickup truck since 1978. Yes, 36 years — that’s longer than a lot of you reading this have been alive. However, there are a few things about Fords popular pickup that most people don’t know about. Earliest Ford pickup wasn’t an F-series. Although Ford offered delivery-bodied cars sporadically since 1905 and one-ton trucks since 1917, its first factory-assembled “pickup” was built on April 15, 1925. The 33,795 1925 model T runabouts with pickup body sold for $281.Why it was called the F-150. The earliest use of the F-series name dates to the all-new 1948 Ford trucks, the half-ton model being the F-1. Ford made the jump to the F-100 name in 1953, but the F-150 nomenclature didn’t arrive until 1975. This was a model that debuted to evade emissions requirements, as it was essentially a “heavy half” pickup rated at just over 6,000 pounds gross weight — the line in the sand drawn by the EPA at the time, which required catalytic

converters and subsequently unleaded gasoline. International Harvester also did this for 1975 — its final year of pickup production — making all half-ton 100 models 150s, to avoid installing

catalytic converters. The final year of the F-100 was 1983 — by which time leaded vs. unleaded was a moot point.Built all over North America, then there were two. When intro-duced for 1948, The F-1 was built at all 16 U.S. assembly plants that also built Ford cars. In 1956, with trucks becoming more specialized along with the opening of the Detroit Truck Plant, Ford started consol-idating truck production to fewer plants. Beginning in the late 1970s, Ford split its North American assembly groups into car and truck. Today, only two plants build all F-150s globally – the Kansas City Assembly Plant in suburban Claycomo, Mo., and the Dearborn Truck Plant near Dearborn, Mich.Off-white or chrome? The front bumper was longest-running component constantly used on every single pickup and remained unchanged during the F-series era from 1959 to 1979.I guess he liked it. Sam Walton, founder of Walmart and one of the

richest men in America, drove the same 1979 F-150 Custom 4x4 to work every day until he died in 1992. When asked why in an inter-view, he stated “What am I supposed to haul my dogs around in, a Rolls-Royce?” Today it can be seen enshrined in the company’s visitors centre/museum in Bentonville, Ark.

Patricia (Pat) Ellen Schade

Patricia (Pat) Ellen Schade passed away peacefully July 3, 2014 with her daughter Patti and good friend Connie by her side. She was 90 years old. Patricia (Pat) Ellen Schade was born February 24, 1924 in Vernon, BC, the seventh of nine children. She grew up and went to school in Vernon making some long time friends along the way.

fter she nished school she worked at the Hudson Bay Co. as a clerk. Pat met her husband Ariel (Ted) while he was posted in Vernon training for the forces. After standing him up for their rst blind date she went roller skating with him and that was all it took. They married in 1943 and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary before Ariel passed away. In 1946 Ariel and Pat moved to Creston and then Wynndel where they ran the Co-op Store. Pat kept busy with the Wynndel Community Club planning all kinds of activities. She also was also employed by the Wynndel Fruit Growers and was a top notch packer.During this time they were blessed with their rst son evin in 19 3 followed by another son eigh in 19 and then a daughter Patti in 19 . They moved back to town in 19 6 as Ariel accepted a job at Taks Home Furnishers in Creston. They made their home in Alice Siding. Pat was a incredible nurturing mother and ran a organized household. Every evening she would sit in her chair reading the Vernon Daily News or later the Province and was sure to complete each and every crossword puzzle. In her earlier days (before TV) she was a avid reader enjoying her True Detective novels. Later she volunteered at the Tuck Shop and for ten years volunteered at Pioneer Villa doing residents' hair every Friday. One of the bright spots later was becoming a member of the TAPS program where she participated in many activities around the valley.Pat loved to bake cookies, pies and always made yummy desserts of all kinds. Grandchildren remember it was

an absolute requirement to accept food when visiting, usually one of her famous gum drop cookies or a homemade buns made up with cheese or peanut butter and jam. She was always sure to produce a peppermint out of her pocket or the much needed tissue. She was a avid canner, canning every vegetable or fruit and the fruit cellar was always full of preserves. She loved her owers and had beautiful gardens full of her favorites. She de nitely had a green thumb.Pat loved to play cribbage, bowling and later took up the game of golf. She also liked to walk until her health changed. In earlier days she and Ariel would skate down the channel or spend Sunday afternoons skating at the civic center. Sunday was also a day for a drive around the valley where she was always a master backseat driver.Grandchildren were her second blessing in life where she was presented with four granddaughters and two grandsons. She was a avid fan at every ball, soccer or especially hockey games that her grandsons played and could be heard at games always urging them on or reprimanding anyone who dared to touch them. Family always came rst and when along came her six great-grandchildren they added a sparkle to her eyes whenever she would see them or their pictures.Pat was predeceased by her husband Ariel, seven brothers and two sisters.She is survived by her loving family

She is also survived by her good friend Connie McFadden and family and will be greatly missed by friend Sharon Haines.

She was born on February 11, 1921 in Spokane, Washington to John and Teresa Lorenzo.Rose Mary’s whole focus in life was her family and friends. She loved to cook for everybody and took great joy in running Brenner’s Café in Yahk for many years. She prided herself with her homemade soups, pies and everything made from scratch. Not only did she run the café, but she decorated many wedding and birthday cakes for people over the years. Halloween also saw her giving away her homemade candy to the local kids. Like many of the women of her time, she loved to knit and sew too. Mom and Dad loved to dance the old time waltz and enjoyed many good times dancing.Rose Mary was predeceased by her husband, Adolf in 1998, her parents and one brother, Peter. Rose Mary leaves to mourn her passing her three children; John (May) Brenner, Ron (Sandy) Brenner and Sheila Way as well as her seven grandchildren; Sarah, Charlotte, Andrea, Matthew, Jessica Brenner and Megan and Greg Way. Also left behind are six great-grandchildren; Thor, Ella, Grey, Porter, Tate and Finn.

ART WALK

For the 18th season, Art Walk will continue to be the destination for the arts in the Creston Valley, running through to Sept. 1.

With the lack of traditional ven-ues, exhibiting in alternative spac-es becomes one of the best ways for artists to introduce their work to the public.

Art Walk has the best motiva-tion in the world, which is to con-tinue to develop the arts commu-nity, because all the committee members are practicing artists themselves.

There is a great pleasure that comes from realizing there are

many others seeking the same thing and somehow, by pooling their resources, Art Walk will con-tinue to energize a community of artists into action.

Art Walk supports professional, established artists with their own studio galleries and venues, and also links artists who do not have their own venues with businesses interested in promoting and sup-porting the arts.

The walking section of the tour includes studios and businesses mainly in the downtown core. A previous article in the June 26 Advance covered the driving tour to outlying studios and galleries,

She is inspired by the beauty of the Saskatchewan landscape, the magnificent scen-ery of the Creston Valley and of her travels to Mexico. She likes the viewer to see a different side of Mexico, a side that does not make the evening news.

Not far away on Canyon Street is Cresteramics which, once again, supports the local art scene by displaying the works of a variety of artists in mixed mediums.

Further along Canyon Street is Creston Card and Stationery, another longtime sup-porter of Art Walk. This year, it has the dyed painted fabric of Eileen Gidman along with Creston artists’ cards.

On 12th Avenue is Kingfisher Used Books, which features many different artists through-out the year. The featured artist during Art Walk is Carol Schloss, a signature member of the prestigious Pastel Society of America, based in New York. An enthusiasm for all things wild and natural brings her artwork to life with a sparkle.

Opposite Kingfisher Used Books is the Pridham Studio where Micah Wassink and her husband, Jeremiah, carry on with the handmade and hand-painted pottery made popular by Micah’s parents, Nancy and Dave Pridham This young couple has also developed some of their own unique designs.

CRESTON MUSEUM

The Creston Museum is gearing up for the biggest event of the year. Every August since 1999, guests have been swept back in time for an afternoon of tea and entertainment on the courtyard patio. The recent addition of a theme to the afternoon tea has become an enormous hit, and this year is sure to be no differ-

ent! With the help of Footlighters Theatre Society, influential histori-cal events are portrayed and incor-porated in an authentic (and often humorous) manner.

Gentleman and ladies of the Creston Valley are invited back to the summer of 1914, when rumours of war in Europe were being whis-pered throughout the streets of Canada. Here in Creston, the ladies

of the church have called a meeting to discuss their plans for the annual Labour Day dance coming up in just a few short weeks. They host this dance every year as a fundraiser for local benefits. This year, however, a new benefit is on the horizon…

“This is the first of several activi-ties we’re planning to mark the cen-tennial of the First World War,” said museum manager Tammy Hardwick. “The challenge has been to make it the fun, entertaining and engaging afternoon that our guests have come to expect, without glori-fying war.

“Our wonderfully creative sum-mer staff, with a little help from Footlighters, have focused on the wide variety of issues that were under discussion at the time, culmi-nating in the arrival of the news of the war’s outbreak. We really are taking you back to the Creston of the summer of 1914. They’ve done a fantastic job, and I can’t wait to see if our guests agree!”

The “meeting” will be held Aug. 9, with three afternoon seatings at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. As usual, dainty sand-wiches, sweets, tea and lemonade will be served. Guests are encour-aged to come dressed in 1914 attire.
