Creston cigarette smokers could face further restrictions if Creston town coun-cil’s response to a Kootenay Smoke Free Coalition presentation at the May 13 regu-lar meeting is any indication.

A delegation, including representatives from the BC Cancer Agency, Canadian Cancer Society and Interior Health gave council an overview of health, environ-mental and economic impacts of second-hand smoke. Support for bylaws banning smoking in some outdoor locations is growing across Canada, they said. About 30 B.C. municipalities have bylaws in place, with others considering similar action.

Bylaws typically include municipality-managed properties like trails, plazas, parks, beaches and recreation facilities, and bar and restaurant patios. They include an exemption for traditional tobacco ceremonies.

Coun. Judy Gadicke said her concern was answered when Interior Health’s Trish Hill said education, not policing, is the prime goal.

“We have heard from smokers who have said that the bylaw has helped them to reduce consumption,” she said. “Most smokers do not want to see younger gen-erations taking up the habit.”

Hepher named

citizen of the year

BY BRIAN LAWRENCEAdvance Editor

After a lifetime of public service — from the Army to journalism to volunteering with charities and non-profits — Peter Hepher was named the 2014 citizen of the year at Friday’s Creston Valley Blossom Festival opening ceremonies.

“I didn’t think I was deserving of it,” he said on Monday. “I’m very honoured. There are a lot of other people more deserving.”

At the age of 93, Hepher is still going strong, and is currently involved with several community organizations:

•the Creston-Kootenay Foundation, of which he is a founding member, and cur-rently chairs the marketing/communications and environment committees, as well as writing articles and press releases;

•the Creston Valley Community Housing Society, of which he was a found-ing member in 2008, and is still an active board member;

•the Creston Rotary Club, participating in fundraising and community projects;

•the Creston Valley Community Network; and

•the United Church of Canada, serving in many capacities in volunteer and community building efforts.

On May 31, the Nature

Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is inviting nature lovers, outdoor adventurers and curious ecologists of all ages to come out to the Frog Bear Conservation Area and discover the many creatures that can be found in the Creston Valley.

Discovery Day is a family-friendly com-munity event that aims to foster an appreciation of the natural treasures in our backyard. Research biologists will be on hand to share their love and knowledge of the

frogs, bats and bears that call this valley home.

A special presenta-tion in the evening, “Where the Bears Go”, will take the audience into the secret world of the south Selkirk grizzly bears. This isolated population of less than 100 bears rely on being able to safely cross the Creston Valley to mix with the bears on the other side. Bear biologist Michael Proctor will share his amazing research that shows not just where the bears go, but what we must do to ensure their survival.

Afternoon field tours run 2-5 p.m. at the Frog Bear Conservation Area on Channel Road, and “Where the Bears Go” runs at 7:30 p.m. at the Creston and District Community Complex. Admission is free (and donations are accepted).

For more informa-tion, visit www.nature conservancy.ca/frog bear.

The NCC is the nation’s leading land conservation organi-zation, working to protect important nat-ural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962, NCC and its partners have helped protect more than 2.6 million acres coast to coast. More than one-quarter of these are in B.C.

Out with the old, in with the new. That’s the plan of the Erickson Elementary School (EES) parent advisory council (PAC), which has embarked on a mission to raise funds for a new primary playground.

The current playground, which passersby rarely see because it’s around back, is too tall for young children and the decaying structure is giving

them splinters.“Ours is still one of the old

log playgrounds,” said PAC president Sabrina Damery, who often takes her three children to play on the Adam Robertson Elementary School playground. “It wasn’t built for the ages using it.”

The proposed new play-ground will be like others installed at local schools, made of metal and plastic — but it comes at a cost of about $40,000.

A few fundraisers have already been held — and the PAC has discussed the project with the Creston Valley Rotary Club, which sponsors the school’s breakfast pro-gram — the most recent being hanging baskets from Beltane Nursery for Mother ’s Day. Next up is a car wash, which will run at EES from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. May 31.

“It was a very quiet and pleas-ant weekend,” Creston RCMP Staff Sgt. Bob Gollan said on Tuesday. “Blossom Festival caused us no problems, perhaps because our officers had high vis-ibility.”

Among the beneficiaries of that high visibility was the Lower Kootenay Band’s Yaqan Nukiy Powwow, where patrolling Const. Morgan Littlejohn was lured into participating in the men’s shawl dance. He won, and promptly donated his winnings to the visiting drum group that played while he danced.

Police BeatCreston RCMP responded to 57

calls from May 12-18, Gollan said.

May 12•The female half of an intoxicat-

ed couple drinking in Centennial Park called 911, but there was no emergency.

•A young male who was seen speeding in a school zone on 18th Avenue South was sent a warning letter.

•Police assisted Midway RCMP by taking a statement in a break and entry investigation.

•Police received a complaint that ATVs and dirt bikes were being used in a closed area behind the Canyon Hall. The riders are speeding and not wearing hel-mets.

•When police located an intoxi-cated male on 16th Avenue North he was cooperative and given a ride home.

16-year working relationship was one of camaraderie, fun, satisfying work, philosophizing, banter and (I hope) deep friendship.”

“Peter was one of a kind — a journalist who was genuinely nice,” said former Herald editor Catherine Ford. “I don’t think any-one who worked with Peter could possibly have a bad word to say about him.”

Throughout his time in Alberta, Hepher’s volunteer work was with his wife for the Unitarian Service Committee of Canada, alongside founder and family friend Dr. Lotta Hitschmanova, collecting clothes and funds for children in war-torn countries.

The couple retired to Creston in 1985. Mary’s health was in decline, and Hepher took on the role of care-giver until her death — but that didn’t deter him from volunteer work, which to him was simply a logical progression from being in the newspaper business.

“I felt all those years doing that, I was doing a public service,” he told the Advance. “I guess I got it in my head that I should keep on doing it.”

That giving spirit led him to join the Creston Rotary Club — encouraged by William Mitchell-Banks — and contrib-ute time to the organi-zations mentioned at the outset, as well as the home support board, the Save our Community Services Society and the Phoenix Restoration Society, even organiz-ing and playing bad-minton until he was 89.

Eight years ago, he married Anne Page, also a tireless volun-

teer who was 1992’s citizen of the year. She describes him, Park relat-ed, as “a man that is generous with his time and his money” and as an “avid recycler”.

“One hesitates to even mention the significant disability that Peter has faced with such dignity his whole life but the grace which he has shown to so many of us that have initially struggled to under-stand him is a life lesson of its own,” Park concluded on Friday. “We are so fortunate that a cleft palate was not enough to silence a great man and that he has been patient enough to show us what a truly golden man he is.”

And Hepher can’t stress enough the need for others to get involved in the community in any way they can — for example, dozens of locals need help with affordable housing.

“That’s a prime example of the need for community work,” he said. “Nowadays, the community needs community organizations to meet the needs of other people. At the other end of it, it’s very satisfying.”

From page 1Hepher is also a

regular contributor to the local press, through letters to the editor and by taking a regu-lar turn writing The Voice of Experience col-umn co-ordinated by the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors.

Serving others is nothing new to Hepher, who was born Christmas Day 1920 in Boswell. Despite a cleft palate (which childhood surgery in Spokane, Wash., only partially repaired) and reduced vision in one eye from a childhood accident, he volunteered for the Canadian Army during the Second World War.

“A story is told that he memorized the let-ters on the standard eye chart so that he could pass his Army physical examina-tion,” said Creston Valley Rotary Club president Tim Park when introducing Hepher to Friday’s audience, reading from the selection committee’s notes (details of which are included in this story).

Hepher ended up serving in a non-com-batant role in England, where he achieved the rank of sergeant. He brought a war bride, Mary, back to Canada; their first son, Ian, was born in 1947, and they adopted a second, Paul, a few years later.

After the Army, Hepher continued his education, earning a degree from the University of British Columbia and a jour-nalism degree from Ottawa’s Carleton University. For four years, he worked as an editorial writer for the StarPhoenix in Saskatoon, and then worked at the Lethbridge Herald from 1953-1959. From 1959 through the mid-1980s, Hepher was an editorial writer and, later, chief editorial writer for the Calgary Albertan and Calgary Herald.

He easily earned the respect of his col-leagues, including Mary Ann Morel, who worked with him at the Albertan.

“Peter is one of the Earth’s treasures, like a UNESCO heritage site, and someone that everyone at the Albertan knew and respected,” she said. “Peter ’s and my

We drove home from Calgary and a visit with our new grand-daughter on Monday, coming up against a steady and growing stream of traffic on Highway 22 and then Highway 3. No surprise there — many would have been the same vehicles we saw leaving the Calgary area on Friday afternoon and eve-ning.

The surprise came at about 1 p.m. as we left Fernie. My eyes widened at the oncoming bumper-to-bumper traffic crawling eastward at a snail’s pace. As it continued past the ski hill turnoff, then Morissey and right to the tunnel, I said to Angela that the mass of traffic gave me a creepy feeling — like something terrible had happened and we didn’t know about it. With that comment I suddenly remem-bered a brief chat in a liquor store the day before, when a clerk saw by account that I lived in B.C. and asked if we had any problems with the mudslides near Golden.

How crappy, I thought, to have looked forward to a long weekend spring getaway, only to have to make a long detour to get back home. No better, either, for the folks making their expected drive from Fernie, Koocanusa, Yahk, Kootenay Lake and I suppose even Invermere, only to encounter mass-es of traffic that would add hours to the drive.

When I was a kid in Calgary, the drive to Fernie took us south to Fort Macleod and then east on Highway 3. It was almost exactly 200 miles and it was a long trip back then. We always stopped at the junction of Highways 2 and 3 for lunch. It wasn’t until the late 1970s that

Highway 22 became a viable option. Even then it wasn’t paved all the way and on one memorable trip with our young sons, Angela encountered a section of road so waterlogged that a Cat was towing vehicles through.

On our countless trips back to Calgary since, Highway 22 has become my favourite drive, with gentle curves winding through the beautiful landscape and the view of the Rockies to the west. But I have never for a second envied the steadily increasing numbers of families who make the drive to condo or RV destinations as they haul snowmobiles, ATVs, boats and trailers with vehicles laden with bicycles, kayaks, golf clubs and other recreation gear. Once in a while might be fun, but for many it’s a routine migration stimulated by the need to escape the city for weekends in the outdoors. Even in shoulder seasons, when ski hills are closed and the weather remains wet and chilly, the lure of a condo or RV away from the city is too tempting. I envision families huddled around a table, playing cards, tapping away at their cell-phones and pacing like lions, all the while asking if the drive was worth it.

Those of us lucky enough to live in rural areas don’t have nearly the

hassle. Many of us can walk a block or two and be in the trees or on a mountainside, breathing fresh air and listening to the calls of birds. A short drive is all it takes to find a huge variety of experiences. Even better, when we do make our

excursions to cities, where we find family and a great variety of culture, we toler-ate traffic and chaos because we know we are only visitors. Heck, getting caught up in rush hour traffic on Deerfoot Trail even affords us the oppor-tunity to feel smug in the knowledge that we don’t have to buck the grind on a

day in, day out soul-sucking rou-tine, with only the dream of a four-hour drive to Koocanusa on Friday afternoon to sustain us.

Friends in Vancouver used to joke that Angela and I did more fun things in a week in the city than they did all year. That’s the great rural secret — we can escape to a city and ratchet up our energy level in a heartbeat, moving at full throttle for several days, knowing that we will soon return to our normal lives, slow down and re-energize. For city folk, I don’t think it works quite the same way. It takes much longer to shed the pace of urban life and slow down long enough to smell the rural equivalent of roses.

I hope, for the sake of the driv-ers caught in the long, tedious line of traffic west of Fernie on Monday, that it was an anomaly caused by the mudslides on Highway 1. I wouldn’t wish for that drive to become a routine on anyone.

The precept, “Do good for others,” is associated with a sincere intention to help all beings. Buddhists call this intention the “bodhisattva vow”. A bodhisattva is someone who seeks, in all circumstances, to do good for oth-ers. Throughout his life, the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni, was primarily concerned with what was the most helpful teaching for whomever he was facing at that time.

Each day — moment by moment — we are presented with opportunities to show unconditional love and com-passion. Often a sincere intention to act compassionately will help free others from a life of sad-ness, depression and doubt. To meet someone who can help without criti-cism, can love without judgement and can give without regret is a rare event. To live by the precept, to do good for others, is to live a life of selflessness. It is to be constantly thinking about how our actions, thoughts, words and emotions make this world a more loving and com-passionate place for everyone. I know that sounds like a big job for just one person, but all change for the better begins with just one person acting with wisdom and compassion in this very moment.

I am reminded of a story about a woman who, while shopping, noticed how many products are packaged in plastic. She had learned in an educational TV program how harmful plastic is for the environ-

ment, and how much plastic sits in our landfills and oceans, and how long it takes to decompose: over one million years! She also learned how long it takes to decompose a paper bag: one week.

She wondered, “Why do they have to wrap everything in plas-tic?” So she undertook a campaign to get stores to stop using plastic bags, and as we all know, it has helped. She didn’t change every-one’s behavior, but if you look around at Overwaitea Foods or Extra Foods, many customers now use recyclable grocery bags. This change has happened because one woman, one blossoming bodhisatt-

va, decided to look out for the good of all concerned. She became the change that she wanted to effect.

What good is a really big love if it never gets applied in the world? This woman had a really big love

for our planet and she applied it skillfully! In so doing, she met and expressed her bodhisattva self! As each of us meets our own compassion we will be able to greet the world by doing good for everyone.

As I have often said, the cornerstones of Buddhist prac-tice are generosity and com-

passion. I prefer the term altruism. To see how altruism acts as powerful a force for positive change all we have to do is look at how volunteers at the Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors, at Gleaners or at the Therapeutic Riding Program have been good for others.

Two suggested practices: 1) Resolve to begin each day with the intention of doing good for others. 2) If you think a project is too large to fix, remember the woman who took on plastic.

According to Daniel 7:28, Daniel was greatly troubled by his vision. The only part of the vision not explained was the time aspect, which was made clear when he was given another vision a few years later.

Chapter 8 contains the central pro-phetic vision of the book of Daniel. As in Chapter 7, Daniel receives a vision that features more animals, but this vision comes in two parts: first the action in

symbols and then an explanation.Daniel saw a two-horned ram that

pushed westward, northward and south-ward and no “beast” (a beast in Bible prophecy represents a political power) could stand against it. Then he saw a male

goat with “a notable horn between his eyes” coming from the west. (A horn in biblical prophecy represents a ruler.) The ram challenged the goat with disastrous results. It was destroyed.

The goat dominated the area. Soon, this notable horn was broken and four horns grew in its place, but then another little horn grew and “grew exceedingly great.”

This little horn challenged heaven itself, the “Prince of the host,” God’s sanctuary (or tem-

ple) and its sacrifices. And, said Daniel, this little horn “cast truth down to the ground.”

The prophetic drama ended with a conversation. A “holy one” asked how

long the little horn’s battle against heav-en was to continue and the answer is given in Daniel 8:14: “For two thousand three hundred years and then the sanc-tuary will be cleansed.” This is the cen-tral part of the vision.

While Daniel was trying to work out what the vision meant he heard some-one commission Gabriel to “make this man to understand the vision.”

Gabriel began his explanation by tell-ing Daniel the time this vision was con-cerned the “time of the end” and the “latter time of indignation.” And then he identified the players in the drama and he could not have been more specific! We will see that in my next column.

Daniel 8 is the last symbolic vision of Daniel and contains the longest time prophecy of the Bible. The following chap-ters explain and expand on this vision.

This chapter gives more details about the rise and fall of nations. It tells us more about this little horn kingdom and explains the purpose of the Jewish sanctuary.

To the Editor:After what happened this morning, I

thought I’d write with a warning so what happened here today may not happen to someone else.

PipSqueek, our 15-year-old chihua-hua, isn’t doing well, so lately I’ve been sleeping with her in the La-Z-Boy chair in the family room to keep a close eye on her. At about 8:15 a.m., the sun was beaming in and I was getting too warm, so I was starting to wake up. Then I smelled smoke! The Miller Hatcheries book was on fire on my desk. By the time I got to it, it was in flames. I grabbed it and ran outside to stomp it out. When I

got back a matter of seconds later, the next piece of paper was on fire.

I have a magnifying glass in my pen-cil holder that’s been there for several years. The sun hit it just right and started to burn the paper on the desk, about two feet from my head on the chair. Now the magnifying glass is in the drawer.

The smoke detector just had a new battery put in, but it didn’t have a chance to go off. Had I been sleeping in the bedroom, way at the other end of the house, I would not have known about the fire until it would have done a lot of damage, or even worse — there are still animals in this room. Rick was outside the whole time and wouldn’t have noticed, either. I’m a sound sleep-er and normally wake after 8:15.

This could have easily turned into a disaster, so I thought about how many people have a magnifying glass on their desk and how many people have a window in their office.

No matter how you do it, by foot, by bike or by car, it is up one side and down the other, by road or through the bush. The road route, over this height of land, however, probably gives a better feel for the idea of “divide” than the spot where the water runs either way, depending on

whether the slope is to the west or to the east. At this point, the actual pass, a bit to the north, where one begins to go down one way or the other, is hardly detectable except to the observing eye. To some, any-where in the bush is all the same. But the point on the road where one goes down to the west or down to the east is pretty obvi-ous and to some much more dramatic, even traumatic, than the point in the for-est where the waters divide. This little great divide is the height of land that divides the Lakeview district from the West Arrow Creek district and drainage.

Before the 1980s, there was no road like there is now joining Lakeview with Arrow Creek, making it possible to drive through

from the Creston-to-Wynndel highway to the highway going to Kitchener. Here, instead of a Selkirk loop, one can experi-ence a mini Purcell loop leaving Creston from the east or the north and, after pass-ing through the Lakeview and West Arrow Creek communities, returning the

other way. The route, roughly 28 kilometres from start to finish, passing through different land-scapes, makes a nice loop, by bike or car or even by foot. I know of one party who did part of the loop on foot, except by following the power line and gas pipeline right-of-way around the backside of Arrow Mountain (a.k.a. Goat Mountain). It isn’t as easy as it appears to be. The north aspect of

that mountain is very wet in some areas. And, because of that, it has a very interest-ing plant and animal community. Then, if you don’t like doing loops then you can hike from Erickson up over the top of Arrow Mountain and down to Arrow Creek.

The thought of passing through the route of the “little great divide” isn’t a recent one. Sometime around 1862, one of the routes of the Dewdney Trail from the Creston flats to the Goat River drain-age east of Creston was pushed up over this height of land. In fact I can still see indications of the trail where the con-struction of the road in the 1980s obliter-ated the more obvious four-foot-wide

section. I first became aware of it when a former resident of Foster Road pointed out the window and said, “It was right over there.” In the late 1940s and early 1950s they used to drive cattle over that portion of the Dewdney Trail, somewhat widened then, between Yahk and Wynndel, to and from grazing lands and from the trains out of Lethbridge.

In the choice and construction of any travel route, be it early trails or later roads, the easiest routes were followed, so we have trails, highways and railroads fol-lowing the same valleys and slopes, the later highways largely obliterating previ-ous routes. For the most part, the Dewdney Trail routing, where possible, tended to be on the south facing slopes where the snow would melt earlier, per-mitting earlier travel. Excepting the por-tion of the Dewdney Trail that passed easterly, where the road is now over the little great divide, the trail went generally along the north side of the Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road until the land flattens out. At the first left-hand turn proceeding west on Lakeview-Arrow Creek Road from Highway 3, the Dewdney Trail descended to a crossing of Arrow Creek and ascended over now private land through what is now East Arrow Creek.

Biking west by road from Highway 3, involves a very gradual climb up to the divide, always making a left turn at major intersections.

From page 7Travelling in the other direc-

tion, east, to stay on the main route one always turns right to get to Highway 3. Travelling the loop clockwise from north of Creston on Highway 3A, an extra breath or two will be required to get around those switchbacks up the Lakeview “hill”. When first doing it I found it easier when, as passing by, I took in the scenery rather than thinking about how far it was. After taking the first right of the main drag, the route flat-tens out and with one last little ascent reaches the divide where the Dewdney went over the rock instead of cutting through. The elevation gain from Highway 3A is in the ballpark of 400-500 feet. From there it is all downhill. But don’t be quite so quick. If you are walking or biking (not by car) stop in this rock cut and turn around and take in the view of the valley and the Selkirk Mountains on the other side.

This is the first rock cut. The second, farther east and down, is where the drainage went through a narrow define where, before the road construction, there were some cascading waterfalls. This spot was too rough and rocky for the Dewdney Trail. Before the road it was a place of reprieve and solitude in the shade of cedars and hemlocks where the sound

of the brook was interspersed with the long trilling and war-bling calls of winter wrens.

The cliffs created by rock blasting for the road have since rejuvenated. With almost 30 years behind them, these north facing defines have taken on a natural appearance with ledges and crevices harboring moist, mossy turf, little ferns, sapling shrubs and lichens. Kinnikinnick and trailing twinflower plants drape from the top.

Of course, there have been other changes too. Forty years ago, the little great divide and the West Arrow Creek valley were much different, with few people and stories that traced back to the 1930s: tales of ice jams, creek diversions, deep

snows, prospecting, quartz cached in hollow stumps, set-tlers and cattle drives. Now, if you want a change from the world you are in now, in any season (but not in snowy con-ditions), take a walk, bike or car ride over the little divide. Here you are just to the south of where the water flows west down Lizzard Creek and to the Kootenay River or east into O’Kell Creek, Arrow Creek, Goat River and then the Kootenay River. Here, if coming from the west, at the little great divide, you enter a different world!

Yes, it is that time of year! The sun is shining brightly. The air smells sweet with all the blos-soms out.

Last year, the spring was a little earlier so the bulk of veggie gar-den planting coincided directly

with Mother’s Day and all the flower baskets heading to new homes. This year’s planting busi-ness has been a little more spread out. The first crop of baskets has all disappeared. Now people are after their tomatoes and other goodies. We always end up plant-ing our garden toward the middle of June, after the garden centre begins to slow.

Remarkably, we haven’t had any brutal frosts for weeks now. It seems most folks had some rose garden losses, most likely due to the harsh winter temperatures we had and lack of snow cover. Frost will drive

further into the dry ground as it is left uninsulated.

Out in the nursery, we have a number of crabapple trees begin-ning to bloom. Small and upright in growth habit, with others weeping, they offer a variety of

leaf and flower colours. There is a new red rhododen-dron, Besse Howell, seemingly earlier to flower, darker in colour than the Nova Zembla. Dark green leaves all year offer some winter interest.

Also of interest in the winter season is the Chinese paper bark maple with cinnamon brown peeling bark, and Wojnar’s Purple and several other hardy rho-dos developed at the University of Finland in Helsinki. Even if you don’t have a spot for one yourself, you should come out and have a look at the blossoms around the nursery. Also in flower around town is the famous laburnum, the “golden chain tree”, with its pendu-lar, bright yellow blooms.

Have a great weekend enjoying spring!

Footlighters hosting regional theatre festivalFOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

After more than a decade since Creston hosted Centre Stage, Theatre BC’s Kootenay Zone festival, Footlighters Theatre Society is bringing the adjudicated competition back to the Prince Charles Theatre May 29-31.

Three plays — Almost Golden and Coffee’s On from Creston, and The Dumb Waiter from Revelstoke — will compete for several awards, including one for best production, which will move on to com-pete against other regional winners in July’s provincial festival in Kamloops.

“Having the festival return to Creston is a great opportunity for both the per-formers and creative teams to learn from the adjudicator,” says Footlighters presi-dent and festival co-chair Brian Lawrence. “Both of Creston’s scripts are original, so we’re particularly interested to receive feedback on them.”

Each play will run at 7:30 p.m. at Prince Charles Theatre, with a 10-minute critique from the adjudicator immediately follow-ing the performance. Anyone interested can also attend a two-hour critique of each play at 9:30 a.m. the following morning at the Snoring Sasquatch. The schedule is:

•May 29, Almost Golden (Footlighters), by Suzanne Chubb and Jason Smith, directed by Brian Lawrence. A retired miner and his wife living in a small B.C. town are celebrat-ing their wedding anniversary. Their daugh-ter, with her husband and son, and son, with his wife and daughter, come to visit, and the family’s bond is tested during appearances by four visitors, each of whom brings to light information that has a profound effect on the future. Starring Lynn Adderley, Marc Archambault, Warren Bruns, Suzanne

Chubb, Starla Ek, Brian Lawrence, Debra Mehrer, Kelly Mehrer, Sam Mintenko, Jason Smith, Stephanie Sweet, Logan Thompson.

“This show deals with so many topics — aging, infidelity, sibling rivalry — that it really stuck a chord with the audience when we performed it in December,” said Lawrence. “Rehearsing it a second time has been a great opportunity to explore even deeper the feelings associated with those themes.”

•May 30, Coffee’s On (Footlighters), by Jordan Koop, directed by Simon Lazarchuk. A one-man show taking the audience through a week in a man’s life, at home, work and on stage, exploring up and downs along the way. Starring Jordan Koop, with paintings by Alison Masters as a backdrop.

“The production itself is very minimal-istic and artistic,” said Koop. “Using poet-ry, comedy and narrative, you will follow a man’s journey to accept who he truly is, and why he can’t function properly with-out coffee.”

•May 31, The Dumb Waiter (Revelstoke Theatre Company) by Harold Pinter, direct-ed by Anita Hallewas. Two hired assassins are holed-up in a dingy, disused basement of a rooming house, waiting to be sent out on their next job. Thinking the house has been abandoned, things get complicated when they receive information from sources coming from other floors to send food orders up a dumb waiter. They bicker between themselves as their anxiety grows about the unknown victim. Starring Anna Fin and Sarah Harper.

“There are some laugh out loud moments and also some opportunities for the audi-ence to really think,” says Hallewas. “On top of that, the two actors are brilliant in their

roles of Gus and Ben. We mixed it up with our take, and Gus and Ben are women assas-sins working in the present day. This all makes for a really great night at the theatre!”

Kamloops-based Danielle Dunn-Morris will take on the challenge of adjudicating the festival, announcing the awards on the final day before hosting a four-hour work-shop with the winner. Trained at the University of BC and Banff School of Fine Arts, she is an experienced director, per-former and educator.

With three vastly different plays on the schedule, the festival will be a learning experience for performers and audience members alike.

“This festival provides an excellent opportunity for local audiences to see three shows in a short period of time, and compare them,” says festival co-chair and Footlighters treasurer Frank Goodsir. “We won’t wait a dozen years to do it again!”

The classic car world is full of “coulda, shoulda, woulda” stories of people who had the opportunity to buy something when it was affordable only to see it sail out of reach. If you didn’t buy a Shelby Cobra during the Nixon administration for 10 grand, the only alternative for most people today is a replica. Replicas are all good fun unless someone tries to pass one off as the real deal. Here are five of the most common classic car counterfeits:1. 1967 Shelby Cobra 427: The Cobra might just be the most desirable sports car on the planet. Not coincidentally, it’s also the most replicated. With bulging, macho good looks; a big block

Ford V-8; side pipes; shattering performance; and only around 300 originals made, it was a certain-ty from almost the beginning that supply and demand would never be equal. The originals have always commanded good money — by the late 1970s, they were approaching $50,000, and around that time, cottage industries sprang up everywhere to build Cobra rep-licas. Some were quite good while others bordered on undriveable. A lot depended on the skill (or lack thereof) of the builder. Even Carroll Shelby, the car’s original creator, got into the act. Some argue that the 1992 Dodge Viper was the ultimate tribute to the Cobra.  Fortunately, it’s really hard to pass off one of the replicas as the real

deal; the Shelby Club maintains a registry of the real cars by serial number and historyWe believe that every classic car has a story. Tell us yours here.2. 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder: The 550 Spyder (of James Dean death car fame) and the more common bathtub-like Porsche 356 Speedster have a long history of being replicated. Vancouver com-pany Intermeccanica makes very high quality Speedster replicas, while Beck in the U.S. has a great reputation for making 550 Spyder replicas. Because the originals were alloy and steel, respectively, and the replicas are fibreglass, there’s no danger of one being passed off as the real thing. Real 550 Spyders are $4 million or so and Speedsters

can bring more than $300,000. Replicas can be had for around $30,000, which combined with the fact that they’re quite fun to drive explains their appeal.3. 1961 250 GT Ferrari Califor-nia Spyder: Before Ferrari got serious about cracking down on violations of its intellectual proper-ty rights, its products were among the most commonly knocked-off cars on the planet. A very bogus California Spyder built by a compa-ny called Modena Industries shot to fame as the hero car in “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” About 50 were built between 1987 and 1989, before Ferrari said “basta!” Real ones start at about $9 million.4. Ferrari 308 GTS: After the “Ferris Bueller” car, the Ferrari with the most screen exposure was the red Ferrari 308 GTS that Tom

Selleck drove on “Magnum P.I.” Conveniently, as the 308 reached the apex of its fame via the TV show, Pontiac came out with the mid-engine Fiero, whose space frame design combined with non-stressed removable plastic body panels made it the ideal platform for conversions designed to simu-late far more expensive mid-engine exotics. The most famous (or perhaps infamous) of these was the MERA, a replica of the Ferrari 308. While the proportions were off and the interior screamed cheap, we suspect that most of the then 20-something barflies taken in by the guy with gold chains and a polyester Hawaiian shirt driving the bogus 308 never suspected a thing.5. 1935 Auburn 851 Speed-ster: Other than a slew of

neoclassics that vaguely replicate Mercedes-Benzes of the 1930s, pre-war cars are seldom faked. But the Iconic Indiana-built Auburn Speedster (along with its equally stunning sister the Cord 810/812) is an exception. Lost count of how many companies have built replicas over the last 40 years are so. Like the Cobras, some are quite good and some exhibit the build quality of a Sochi hotel room. A replica Speedster featured in the opening scene of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”Rob Sass is the vice-president of content for Hagerty Insurance.
