A new physician will soon be arriving to take up a general practice at Summit Medical Clinic.

Dr. Eleanor Huettmeyer is the latest recruit attracted to the area by the Creston Valley Health Working Group. She becomes the fifth doctor in the last two years to be successfully attracted to Creston by the award-winning health recruitment program.

“Dr. Huettmeyer and her husband, Phillip Curran, were referred to us by a Creston physician who had worked with her in the past,” said recruiting consultant Marilin States. “They came for a look at the area within a week of us making contact with them.”

Curran, a pharmacist, has accepted employment at Creston’s Pharmasave.

Huettmeyer and Curran currently reside in Saskatoon, where they recently celebrated the birth of their first child. Huettmeyer will start in Creston with a light patient load and gradually increase it over several months, States said.

“We are excited to welcome this young, active family to our community,” she said. “They enjoy outdoor activities and are look-ing for a place to call home. Eleanor is origi-nally from the East Kootenay and Phillip was born and raised on Vancouver Island, and they seem excited to be returning to their home province.”

In addition to general practice, Huettmeyer also brings her skills as a anes-thesiologist to Creston.

Valerie Comer smiles as she describes her writing — “Christian-centric romance and farm literature”, a genre that reflects her passions.

The Lister farmer has written a dozen novels since taking up writ-ing 2002, and she has settled into “writing what I know about.”

“I didn’t see much fiction with this type of scenario,” she said in a recent interview at Black Bear Books, where her books can be found.

She is currently anticipating publication of a third novel in a series she calls A Farm Fresh Romance. Wild Mint Tea was pub-lished in March, and the first in the series, Raspberries and Vinegar, was released in August 2013.

OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY, SEPT 7OPEN HOUSE SUNDAY, SEPT 7One person was

killed and another injured in a plane crash in Crawford Bay on Saturday.

Ingrid Baetzel

BY WILL JOHNSONNelson Star

A privately registered Cessna 172 crashed into the trees near Kokanee Springs Golf Resort on Saturday eve-ning, killing one person and seriously injuring another.

The plane was departing from a small strip at the Crawford Bay airport when it crashed into the golf course’s treeline.

“I’m still emotionally over-wrought,” said Kokanee Chalets’ owner Paul Hindson, who was at the scene of the crash.

He had been playing tennis when he heard an explosive thump nearby. He dropped his racket and ran to investigate.

“It’s one of those things that doesn’t even seem real,” he said.

“We heard a weird chop-ping sound,” said Ingrid Baetzel, who was at the tennis courts with her husband, Juergen, when the plane went down.

The plane ultimately came to rest on its back and caught on fire.

“It came down hard. We were running in with the very first people and the front end

was fully engulfed in flames,” she said.

A number of heroic passers-by put themselves in danger to help rescue the pair trapped inside, said Baetzel.

“I’m really proud of those guys. When you’re the first ones there it’s so hard to know what’s right,” said Baetzel. “I saw the fire and I didn’t want my husband running towards it, but I absolutely understood his need to help.”

The rescuers were able to remove the female passenger quickly, but had to retrieve a knife to cut the pilot free from his belts.

“They got him to safety and right after there was a series of explosions,” she said.

Though she received aggres-sive first aid treatment, the female passenger could not be revived.

“She was really small,” said Baetzel. “It’s hard to tell. She could’ve been anywhere from a teenager to 20, max. They made some efforts to resuscitate her, and that was taken over by the paramedics. But there was a sense that she was gone before she was even pulled out.”

Baetzel said both a doctor and a paramedic, who had

been camping nearby, respond-ed to the crash and helped with treatment before authorities arrived.

“They were able to run across the road and help, which is so lucky,” she said.

The Creston RCMP and the BC Coroner Services respond-ed to the crash, and the Transportation Safety Board is supporting their investiga-tion.

The plane was registered in Alberta to an Edmonton man named Michal J. Kantoch, but it has not been confirmed wheth-er he was flying the plane at the time of the accident.

The pilot suffered burns and was taken to the hospital.

Photos of the wreckage pro-liferated on Facebook and social media. The images show the burning fuselage jutting out of the trees while one of the passenger receives first aid on the golf green.

Baetzel said a number of the people who were on scene for the accident, including her hus-band, were later taken to the hospital to check for smoke inhalation. They were all released.

“This is changing thing,” said Baetzel. “It’s not some-thing you see a lot.”

From page 1“They were smitten by their

visit to Creston,” States said. “We showed them around the Creston Valley and introduced them to other physicians. This seems like a lovely fit for both of them.”

The health working group was established in 2006 and is made of representatives from current practicing physicians, Interior Health, the Town of Creston and Regional District of Central Kootenay. It is supported and funded by RDCK Areas B and C and the town. It also recruits locum physicians to pro-

vide vacation relief for Creston physicians and to fill gaps in the absence of physicians.

In her role as physician recruitment consultant, States attends physician conferences and events and works with potential candidates referred by Health Match BC and Interior Health.

Nine Creston Valley artists are joining forces for a show running Sept. 5-Oct. 3 at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce. But this won’t be just another art show.

“It’s specifically dealing with Creston agricultural imag-ery,” said Elaine Alfoldy, the exhibit’s organizer.

Core Matters: Farm and Food will feature watercolours by Andy and Elaine Alfoldy and Karen Arrowsmith, pastels by Ute Bachinski and Carol Schloss, textiles by Eileen Gidman, mixed media by Eileen Hirota, and acrylics by Sandy Kunze and James McDowell.

The show, with a couple of other artists included, ran at Kimberley’s Centre 64 from June 10-July 5, pleasing visitors who saw the images of Creston Valley farm life.

“The theme … speaks to Creston’s central Kootenay location as a largely farming valley and that food is at the heart of a happy life,” Alfoldy wrote in the group’s Centre 64 application. “The landscape of orchards and farms, the farm animals, the work done in each season, the farmers’ markets, wineries and home gardens of the Creston Valley inspire each of the painters. We have devel-oped our own unique interpre-tations of the agricultural and farming landscape that sur-round us in the paintings we do in our own professional practices.”

The artists create a wide range of themes, but the agri-culture-related pieces are often the most popular, said Alfoldy.

“I looked at things Andy and I have done over the years,” she said. “People come in for my farm lady and Andy’s landscapes.”

Styles in the exhibit range from realism to semi abstrac-

tion, and will include many displayed in Kimberley, as well as new pieces.

When chamber executive director Jim Jacobsen gave the group the opportunity to show the work in Creston, they couldn’t pass it up — while many Kootenay galler-

ies have pictures of moun-tains and snow, for example, agriculture is quite unique to local artists.

“Creston has a specific way artists treat farms, food and crops in imagery, and I thought we should show it off to Creston,” Alfoldy said.

Measures RescindedTown of Creston, Erickson and Lister water restriction practices have been valuable in diverting daily peak demand.

Watering of lawns, gardens, trees and shrubs should only occur between the hours of 7:00pm-10:00am. Watering using a watering can or hand held hose, may be undertaken at any time.

2014 GENERAL LOCAL ELECTIONS / OTHER VOTING OPPORTUNITIES

BY LORNE ECKERSLEYAdvance Staff

Among the many changes to the BC Liquor Control and Licensing Act this year, few have been more visible than the addition of wine, beer, cider and spirits vendors at farmers markets.

The Creston Valley Farmers’ Market has become one of more than 40 mar-kets around the province to permit liquor vendors to participate.

“I love the addition of a local winery using local grapes and a craft distillery using local grain, as it provides market goers with a new way to explore the local characteristics of the Creston Valley, right at our own farmers’ mar-ket,” said manager Jen Comer.

Comer invited comments on the mar-ket’s Facebook page last week, asking “What do you think of the addition of wine and spirits to our market?” The response included 27 likes and all eight comments were positive.

“I haven’t had a single negative com-ment at the market,” she added.

Baillie-Grohman Estate Winery became the first wine producer to offer its products at the Creston mar-ket earlier this summer. The Erickson winery was established in 2006 and owner Bob Johnson welcomed the new outlet for winery products.

“The customers at the farmers’ market were so happy that the government was fol-lowing through with changes to the liquor laws, they were doing

the happy dance in front of our booth,” he said. “It was a really positive sign that change was happening when one of the local wineries was actually at the farmers Market.”

Lora and Kevin Goodwin have been making the trip from their home in the Slocan Valley to Creston regu-larly, introducing products from Kootenay Country Craft Distillery to a community they have a close con-nection with.

“Working at the Creston farmers’ market has been great,” Lora said. “It gives us a way to connect face to face with potential customers and tourists from outside the area that would other-wise not know about our local farm to bottle product.

“Sales at the market have been excel-lent and have helped us through the very difficult startup of a small distill-ery. The public has been very happy to see us, and many people are surprised that there is a distillery making spirits from Creston wheat.”

Marquis wheat, an heirloom variety developed in the Fraser Valley in the 1890s, is used to make Valhalla Vodka. It is grown by TreasureLife Farms in Canyon.

Jon Bell, president of the BC Association of Farmers’ Markets, said that there are many benefits to regula-

tory changes allowing for liquor sam-pling and sales at B.C. markets.

“Linking consumers and farmers with knowledge and understanding of food production is at the heart of all farmers’ markets,” he said. “The addi-tion of liquor sales at B.C. farmers’ mar-kets is a great extension of the ‘buy local’ and ‘make it, bake it, grow it’ philosophies. These recent changes have been seen as positive by vendors and customers.”

While changes in provincial regula-tions allowed for wine, beer and liquor sales in farmers markets, each market can choose whether it wants to permit such vendors. And the sales must meet local government bylaws and regula-tions, too. All vendors must have Serving it Right certification to ensure responsible service and prevent sales to minors.

With the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market now in its second year of opera-tion on Canyon Street beside the cham-ber of commerce, Comer said the mar-ket’s growth and popularity with con-sumers has been outstanding.

“This summer we have averaged 44 vendors and have been drawing huge numbers of people to each market,” she said. “It is very exciting to see the enthusiasm of our vendors and their customers!”

Don’t you love situations where the political leaning of a governing party doesn’t square with its own actions? ICBC is a great example. Why, you might wonder, does a sup-posedly free enterprise party like the BC Liberals continue to operate an automobile insurance company, a large part of its business which comes from a legislated monopoly that prevents pri-vate insurers from selling basic coverage?

It isn’t complicated, really. The Liberals have had a long, long time to get out of the insurance business when they are generally philosophically opposed to providing services that the private sector can handle (and wants). But they are addicted to the profits.

There is a certain irony at play here, too. While basic insurance is priced, we are told, to pay its way (hence the most recent request from ICBC to jack up basic rates by more than five per cent), the government-owned company is making money hand over fist in the optional auto insurance sector. It doesn’t lower those rates, though, because that would force the private sector to do the same in order to be competitive. Instead, it forks over the surplus profits to the provincial treasury, the same pot that most tax money ends up in, a pot that funds services that don’t fall under the “user pay” phi-losophy that has grown popular with conservative-leaning govern-ments in recent years.

This is a relatively new source of revenue for the province. It was only in 2010 that it passed legislation allowing cabinet to grab surpluses from ICBC to use as it pleases. With the current school year not appear-ing to start any time soon, I feel compelled to point out that the same

government that takes money from overcharged optional auto insurance buyers to fund programs has also committed to returning savings from the teachers’ strike back to parents

(at least those with school children under 13 years of age).

The Christy Clark government won’t put those savings back into the treasury to help fund a contract that falls in line with court rulings on class size and composition because, well, it doesn’t have any great love for public education and all those pain-in-the-butt unionized employees. But it loves being in the insurance business because it can siphon off profits and keep tax rates lower.

There is something particularly distasteful about this manipulation of the auto insurance market. ICBC doesn’t only provide a break-even basic insurance service without any competition at all. It funds things like police checkstops and highway safety projects that would typically be paid out of taxation. It’s an insidi-ous form of taxation that shields the public from truly understanding how it pays for services, much like the sin taxes on tobacco and alcohol that help pay for other services, but help keep the provincial income tax rates down. A quick check of the state of finances in the province shows huge amounts of long-term debt in Crown corporations, which

somehow taxpayers are conned into believing isn’t government debt. It’s such an obvious and tired shell game that apparently we have stopped even thinking about it.

In an excellent recent col-umn on the ICBC issue, Vaughan Palmer of the Vancouver Sun points out that the absurdity doesn’t stop at moving surpluses into general revenues. The government also taxes insur-ance premium charges, so the customer gets a double whammy.

The best defense for gov-ernment-owned automobile insur-ance is that it can be fairer, especial-ly for newer drivers who in other jurisdictions pay much higher rates because statistically they cost insur-ers a lot of money. So the safe young (or inexperienced) driver pays for the ones who are involved in crash-es. Fair enough, the desire to help ease the burden on inexperienced drivers, but in reality a provincial government could legislate the pri-vate sector to accomplish what ICBC does. But then the province wouldn’t simply siphon off hun-dreds of millions of surpluses from private companies, right? Well, actu-ally it could. But it would be taxa-tion, and taxation is a dirty word these days.

Maybe I am an odd duck, but I’d prefer to pay for the services I get from the government through taxa-tion, and have my auto insurance money pay only for auto insurance (including a profit for shareholders of private sector business, because I never have purchased optional ICBC insurance since I had a choice). The political manipulation I can do without.

We have reached that magical time of year known as pool shutdown, and for those of you unaware of this annual occurrence, don’t despair — we are almost at the halfway point. This is the time of year when all the pool basins are drained, inspected, scrubbed and disinfected, along with any necessary repairs done. Along with the pools, all the decks are scrubbed, as well as windows and walls cleaned way up high, pipes wiped down and this year we are changing out all the bulbs over the pools.

I know some of you have noticed a few of the bulbs tend to kick off for about 45 seconds then relight for a couple minutes then repeat which is a pretty clear indication that bulb is begging for an assisted suicide. While the original pool design placed most of the fixtures above deck space specifi-cally for access, it is still a challenge to change some of the bulbs; thus it becomes a shutdown scenario where we can spend time setting up proper equip-ment. The astute swimmers will notice we have some fixtures above the pool but those lights are rarely used in order to conserve life but still be available

should the need arise. You may also have noticed that the bulbs above the leisure pool are more orangey while the ones over the lap pool are whiter. This is not because Bulbs ’R’ Us ran out of one

colour; it is an architectural feature that casts a warmer light over the leisure pool where everyone is having fun and a whiter, more businesslike luminosity over the real serious, don’t-get-in-my-way swimmers.

We are pretty low-key as far as yearly pool repairs are concerned; face it, we are only a little over four years old and everything was built to a pretty high standard. In the back, there is some chemical tubing that needs replacing, as well as the sand filters are opened up, cleaned and examined along with ultra-

violet systems and general pump main-tenance. The locker rooms are scrubbed down even more intensely than we do on a daily basis and any necessary touchups to paint or grout are made at that time.

The fall leisure guide was mailed out to everyone the latter part of August and classes have already begun to fill up. If you did not receive a copy or have some questions or want to register, stop by the front counter and we’ll do our best to help you. There are a pile of programs to choose from; some old, some new and some requested by you, as well as all our fall special events, including

our second annual health and wellness fair. Last year gave us some good insight on the fair and we have tweaked it to make it even better based on yours and exhibitors’ feedback. It definitely is gain-ing momentum — and what better sub-ject than your health? Anyway, I will touch upon the fair a bit more as it gets closer but if you want more info or want to display, contact Andrea at 250-428-7127 or [email protected].

To the Editor:We used to live in Creston a few

years ago and will be eventually mov-ing back. I was so excited to hear Creston has an off-leash dog park. I have been at the dog park a couple of times now and it was done up right, with the double-gated entryway, the poop bag dispenser, garbage can and more. It also is a nice size for dogs to run around in. It’s great!

I was visiting a few days ago and took my dog to the dog park. I was so disappointed. When I got toward the far end of the park, I had to watch where I was stepping. There were so many piles of dog poop!

Most of us dog owners go there to allow our dogs to socialize with other dogs. Most of us are responsible dog owners and clean up after our pets. It’s too bad that there are some dog owners that use the park as a free dumping ground for their dogs. This is so irre-sponsible, as the poop bag dispenser is right there and it’s always had bags in it when I’ve been there. It’s so convenient. There is no excuse for not picking up after your dog.

You people make it look bad for the rest of us responsible dog owners. Maybe you should just run your dogs out in the country somewhere.

To the Editor:On Aug. 14, our son-in-law and

daughter’s rental property on Canyon-Lister Road burned down. Thankfully, no one was in the house at the time so there were no injuries.

We were impressed with the prompt and efficient service provided by the Canyon-Lister Fire Department and the followup later that evening. It gives us confidence to know that our rural area can rely on this kind of help in such emergencies. We should never take for granted how fortunate we are that local residents are prepared to undertake time consuming training in order to be available when events like this take place.

Our heartfelt thanks to each of the team members who were on duty that evening.

To the Editor:I am a 73-year-old senior. I found

myself in a situation about two weeks ago. I was on my way to town when I realized that I had a flat tire and stopped at the side of the road not knowing what to do. Some years ago, there was always someone who would stop to see if they could help. Today, they fly by as if there is no tomorrow!

Anyway, I drove slowly to the near-est service station to ask if someone could help me put some air in my tire. I went in to purchase some cigarettes and ask my question.

There was a lady and a gentleman, and when I asked my question, they started to talk to each other in their own language. At that point, I asked if they could speak in English so I could understand what they were saying. I heard the word “insurance” in there, so I said, “I won’t sue you. Just put some air in my tire so I can get home.”

All the while, they were still talking in their own language and I got upset and asked again if they could speak English. Somewhere in there, I heard the man tell me to shut up. I told him never to tell me that again.

I left the store and wanted to call my friend but there was no phone outside. So I asked to use their phone and the answer was no.

I drove home on the flat tire! You know, there were at least three

men and one woman in the store that just stood there. It is a sad world we live in!

He did it again. After placing second overall in the world and Australian blind golf championships in May, Darren Douma placed second in his sight catego-ry’s low net division at the Canadian Open Blind Golf Championship.

“It was a another great event for me, despite not winning. I shot scores of 88 and 86, which were respectable scores not having played this course before,” said Douma, who was diagnosed in 2005 with Stargardt disease, an incurable and rare genetic juvenile form of macular degen-eration, affecting central fine vision.

The 43-year-old competed in the tournament held Aug. 5-7 in Truro, N.S., for a net total of 136 to win the silver

medal, with a 75-year-old B.C. man earning gold in their B3 sight category.

“Overall, I was happy with this perfor-mance, but was happier for someone else,” said Douma. “A fellow British Columbian, George Thirkill, who was my roommate over in Australia, played a very consistent tournament to beat me for gold low net.”

Douma was assisted through the tournament, both on and off the course, by sight coach Donnie Lynds, and he noted that the N.S. residents were just as friendly to their visitors as the folks in Nelson Bay, Australia, were.

“It was another great experience in Truro, and all volunteers and organizers did a great job with the event,” he said.

He expressed his appreciation to Creston residents and Creston Golf

Club members for their support, which allowed his to compete in the world, Australian and Canadian events this year. And he’s looking forward to the next big competitions.

“As a result of this year’s performanc-es, I will have the opportunity to compete at the Japanese open and World Blind Golf Championships in 2016,” he said. “It’s some time away, so I will have time to work on my golf game some more.”

Before that, he will be working on the 2015 Canadian Blind Golf Open and Western Canadian Blind Golf Open tournaments, which will run in Creston from July 7-12.

“I am optimistic to hopefully have 30 national and 20 international players travel here to Creston to play our hidden gem, the Creston Golf Club,” he said.

Norma is the very dedicated cat attendant for Mondays. Come rain or shine, regular Monday or Holiday Monday, Norma is in the shelter looking after the cat population. She has been a member since January 2013 and has seen many cats come and go. They are all treated with loving care, be it chores of cleaning, grooming, sitting on the fl oor playing with the kittens, or attempting to socialize some of the more frightened cats. At times Norma has taken under her wing young volunteers and helped train them in cat care.Norma quietly goes about her duties and never complains. She does however come up with good ideas for the shelter to improve the stay of the cats while they are awaiting adoption. For all of this we thank her very much for volunteering.

Raspberries and Vinegar earned Comer recognition in the form of a Word Guild Award for the best Canadian Christian contemporary romance novel published in 2013.

Comer, a mother and grand-mother, began writing novels in spare minutes while working at Creston Interiors. She has worked with publishers and agents, but recently made the decision to self-publish, which has given her complete control over produc-tion, distribution and marketing.

“Now I’m indie all the way,” she said. “Even with traditional publishing deals, 95 per cent of the work now falls on the author. My small publisher couldn’t get my books into stores because it couldn’t afford to accept returns.”

Those experiences have only fueled her determination. Comer has educated herself in the use of social media — she blogs at www.valeriecomer.com and is active on Facebook. She unveiled the cover of Snowflake Tiara, which she co-wrote with friend Angela Breitenbach, by posting photo-graphs of segments of it during a Facebook chat.

“It really built interest,” she said.Perhaps more importantly,

Comer has learned the ins and outs of digital publishing and marketing — most of her sales are now digital. Shortly before the interview for this story, she offered one of her novels for 99 cents for a brief period on Ereadernewstoday.com, con-vinced that it would help bring new readers to her books and pave the way for sales at higher prices in the future.

“I have another book coming out this fall, and then four more next year. It’s a marathon, not a sprint!”

In her research, she has concluded that a suc-cessful digital book author needs to have 10-12 books in a genre to succeed on sites like Amazon. To that end, she has become a disciplined writer, working in her office for several hours each day before heading out on the farm to do chores.

Understanding that attracting a mass audi-

ence is unlikely, Comer has developed a very clear picture of her target audience.

“I think of my daughter and daughter-in-law, women in their thirties.”

Younger readers are less set in their ways, she says, and more interested in food production.

“To women in their thirties, food is important,” she said. “They want to know where it comes from, how it’s grown, how it gets to them.”

In Raspberries and Vinegar, Comer writes about three young women who abandon city life to buy land in North Idaho (she sets her novels in the U.S. to appeal to the larger American audi-

ence), where they plan to farm organi-cally and educate other city folk about rural living. The main characters are Christians and churchgoers, and reli-gion is a recurring theme.

“Every writer has their own per-spective. Mine is Christian, political and environmental,” she said. “I want my books to be a good, fun, enjoyable read that will make readers laugh and cry and maybe think a little.”

Despite her defined target market, Comer said the Farm Fresh books have elicited positive responses from teens and seniors of both genders.

“I starting writing in 2002 and have completed 13 original stories,” she said. “Four are published now, but most probably won’t see the light of day. They were part of my educa-tion, though.”

By focusing on digital marketing, she said she is making her life as an author fit her own needs.

“I’m an introvert, so online sales work best for me. I would rather sit in my office and look out the window and make stuff up than be travelling all the time,” she said. “This is the best time to be a writer in the history of the world, I think. More people are able to making a living wage from writing than at any other time.”

For more information, visit Comer’s website, www.valeriecomer.com. She plans a book release and signing event at Black Bear Books when the third novel in A Farm Fresh Romance is published this fall.

CRESTON VALLEYPUBLIC LIBRARY

Is it possible to be independent … together? In her provocative new book, Living Apart Together: A New Possibility for Loving Couples, Linda Breault follows partners who have struggled to find alter-natives to the traditional idea that they must live together to be con-sidered a couple. These individu-als have created happiness in their relationships by maintaining their own autonomy.

Breault will explore the writing of this book, and her own travels and relationships at the Creston Valley Public Library on Sept. 13.

“Professionals searching for ways to balance career and home life, empty nesters who want to rekindle the fire, or single parents searching for an alternative to a blended family, have found ways to revitalize their relationships through independence, and have kept their unions, and their romance, alive,” says Breault of her conversations with a number of people, her inspi-ration for this book.

According to Statistics Canada, approximately 1.9 million

Canadians aged 20 and over were in a “living apart together” arrangement in 2011. It’s not a huge number, but it is growing, particularly in one category — the 60-plus — where it jumped from 1.8 per cent to 2.3 per cent from 2001-2011.

Living Apart Together explores this small but growing trend in an engaging and informative collec-tion of diverse voices of writers who have considered a new uncon-ventional model of love that is lived apart, a relationship that allows both independence and intimacy. The book shares the stories of women and men, single or married, who have chosen to adapt and develop innovative models of being together that allows them the free-dom of being apart with the love and support of being together, and provides a glimpse into the pluses, the challenges and questions behind living apart together. As a “living apart together” relationship isn’t for every couple and, for some, it is an involuntary decision, their stories are included as part of the 25 varied tales of love in this era.

The B.C.-raised Breault holds degrees from the University of BC,

University of Victoria and Simon Fraser University. Her careers in Canada span a lifetime of work with young people and women, but her joy is in international work supporting marginalized people in self-development and self-reli-ance. She has lived, loved and worked in Africa, Latin America, New Zealand, Australia, Central Asia and China.

The Creston Valley Public Library’s Living Book speaker series is a way for community members to learn from each other. Living “books” are real people, your friends and neighbours, vol-unteering to share aspects of their own “story”. Through living books the library seeks to encour-age the sharing of knowledge and passion between people. Topics are varied, from art to travel to local history to coping with loss, and everything in between. Attendees of the speaker series learn more about the people in their community and their diverse backgrounds and expertise.

Hear Breault’s story at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 13 at the Creston Valley Public Library. For more information, call the library at 250-428-4141.

CORN CRICKER’S

TRAILS FOR THECRESTON VALLEY SOCIETY

We are now well into summer and the cogs are still turning on the vision to make our valley, favorite green spaces and water more accessible.

Hooray for the quick success on get-ting the trail below the Therapeutic Riding Program designated as a walking path to Goat River Road South. Thank you to Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks for his work on this.

A small steering group has been work-ing on the paperwork end of things. The group is now established as the Trails for the Creston Valley Society and has taken on the charitable status from the previ-ous trails group, which will allow it to give receipts for donations and receive

money from foundations. At the meeting in May, the group identi-

fied three projects it felt would be low hanging fruit and huge assets to the com-munity. It met with representatives from the Ministry of Forest, Lands and Natural Resources and walked these spaces. Ralph Moore has identified a stand of giant cedar trees along Summit Creek to make a walk-ing trail through and designate as an inter-pretive forest.

The other projects are two pieces of crown land along Goat River, one at the end of Goat River Road South, and the other at the end of Arrowsmith Road. The trails society would like to open up these spaces for pedestrian use, dogs on leash and cycling or horse riding in some areas. The application process takes time, but when the society gets the go ahead, it will be time to start digging.

In the meantime, it is important to build a membership base so the society will have some viability when it comes to looking for sponsors and filling out grant applications. The trails society directors have agreed on offering a yearly mem-bership for $10, family membership for $20, and youth and senior memberships for $5. This money will support some start up costs, and members will receive email updates for events and meetings, maps as they are made and, best of all, will support this exciting initiative in our valley. The society is shooting for 1,000 paid members. Remember, there is power in numbers!

Trails for the Creston Valley Society can be found at the Creston Valley Farmers’ Market and the Creston Valley Fall Fair, or purchase a membership at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Memberships now available tosupport Creston Valley trails society

From page 14Titled for its diverse emotional

journey, the album was an honest and expressive portrayal of an art-ist’s heart. Recorded in the basement of a Calgary church with the help of producer Adam Gill and Jason Graham (Barrage, Shane Yellowbird), the album was followed with shows all across Canada. Shiplett opened for Canadian artists such as Jeremy Fisher, and Zaac Pick and the Matinee, as well as for international artists such as Thomas McCleary of the Commodores.

Shiplett believes in creating and encouraging quality art in Canada; in entertaining and inspiring people across this great country. For more about Shiplett’s music, visit www.jjshiplettmusic.com.

Tickets are $12 in advance at Kingfisher Used Books, Buffalo Trails Coffee House and Black Bear Books, and $15 at the door, which opens at 7 p.m.; the show begins at 8.

ESTON CAB Co.

PLANS TO DELIVER HIGHER EXPECTATIONS

The Creston Cab Co. is the new owner of the Creston Valley Cab Company. Not much of a change in name, but lots of change is planned for service and hours.

For the last four years the previous husband and wife team, Al and Doris, have worked hard to provide a taxi business in Creston Valley. Unfortunately Doris, the owner’s wife, became ill. As a result coverage and consistency with the taxi service has had to pay the price of love and caring. New owners have stepped in and helped Al - the previous owner - transition into his retirement with time to provide caregiving to his wife.

The new owners have hired two drivers, and plan for more as the business is built up to meet - and exceed - the expectations of the community.

CHANGES IN CAB COVERAGE• As far west as the Summit of Hwy 3

between Creston and Salmo.

• Pick up: US Border on the SouthEast to Yahk and North to Riondel

• Pre-arranged pick ups: Anywhere you want from Cranbrook to Vancouver!

The two drivers are immediately on call.

You may meet Gerald Smith, a local long-time resident who has lots of taxi experience and ve star customer service.

The other driver is Leo, a gentleman with a heart of gold who has enchanted the services’ restaurant patrons for many years with outstanding customer service.

Yes, Creston Cab Co. wants you to be satis ed, but more importantly we want to exceed your expectations!

Creston Cab Co. is aware that the past coverage and range of time for pick ups has been limited. The rst thing that has changed is that the phones are on all the time.

We offer day and evening services and are moving to 24 hour/7 days a week.

RONSDALE PRESS

The Creston Valley Public Library is hosting an evening with author Jan

Drabek to commemorate the 75th anni-versary of the outbreak of the Second World War.

Drabek will be speaking on at 7 p.m. Sept. 9 at the library about his two recent books, Vladimir Krajina: WWII Hero and Ecology Pioneer and Thirteen: A Childhood in Wartime Prague. He will be available to sign copies of his books fol-lowing his talk, which is illustrated with a slide show of Second World War photographs.

Vladimir Krajina explores the life of Czech Resistance fighter Vladimir Krajina and his heroic wartime efforts against Nazis. Drabek details Krajina’s many daring escapes from the Gestapo, and his later flight on skis when he eluded the Communists.

Krajina would be personally thanked by Winston Churchill for his critical ser-vice and, after immigrating to British Columbia to found the “ecological reserves,” was inducted a Companion of

the Order of Canada.Drabek is also touring with his mem-

oir Thirteen, hailed by the Vancouver Sun as “a highly compelling recollec-tion”. Thirteen describes Drabek’s tumultuous and unconventional upbringing during the theatre of war. Although it is set during one of histo-ry’s darkest periods, Drabek retells his childhood with sharp wit and humor-ous anecdotes.

Drabek immigrated to North America from Prague in 1948. He received his university education in America and served in the U.S. Navy. He has long been active in the Canadian writing scene — he is the former presi-dent of the Federation of British Columbia Writers, and has served on the National Council of the Writers’ Union of Canada.

FOOTLIGHTERS THEATRE SOCIETY

With the adults cast for Footlighters Theatre Society’s pro-duction of the locally written Cinderella, the production team is turning its attention to casting the chil-dren. In this version, the plotline follows along the traditional telling of the story with specific parts added to accommo-date children.

In the first scene, which takes place on the way to the local fair, the children selected to take part in the show will por-tray orphans who have no money and therefore cannot enjoy the delights of the event. They meet Cinderella, who also has no money to spend on fun at the fair. Throughout the remainder of the show the children demonstrate their continued friendship with Cinderella. They even get to poke a lit-tle fun at the ugly stepsisters.

Throughout the show, the children will participate in singing several songs. Chosen songs include Busy Doing Nothing, Far Away Places, Pass Me By, A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes, Christmas Dream and Thank You Very Much. The show also pokes and prods local humor along the way.

Part of the learning experience in a show like this is for the children to learn the necessary skills both on and off stage to belong to a large cast with a single goal in mind — the telling of the story.

Auditions for the children will take place at the Snoring Sasquatch from 3:15-5 p.m. Sept. 10. All chil-dren wishing to take part in the show should be at the Snoring Sasquatch ready at 3:15 and be prepared to stay until 5. Parents will need to

make sure the children arrive on time and have a ride home when the audition is completed.

During the rehearsal process, which will be every Wednesday

until show time, parents will be needed to act as “orphan wran-glers” — parents who assist when needed when small problems arise. Also, as the rehearsal process

develops, children will be given selected lines to add to their par-ticipation. Additional rehearsals will be added during show week, Dec. 1-3, with performance dates

Dec. 4-6. Children in all grades are welcome to audition.

Further information can be obtained by phoning director Frank Goodsir at 250-428-5082.

ROYAL CANADIANAIR CADETS

COMOX, B.C. — Cadets Ajay Sidhu and Jarred Lalande of Creston, BC spent their sum-mer at the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Regional Gliding School (Pacific) on the basic and advanced aviation courses.

Sidhu and Lalande, mem-bers of 904 Kootenay Squadron, are two of 47 air cadets from across B.C. select-ed for the opportunity to com-plete either the basic or advanced aviation course. These courses provide cadets with the fundamentals of avi-ation training by expanding aviation knowledge through learning, experience and exposure. The basic aviation course hopes to inspire cadets to further pursue aviation training while providing the groundwork necessary to be accepted into an advanced aviation course. Upon com-pletion of the advanced avia-tion course, cadets become eligible for instructor and team leader positions within the air cadet program.

Throughout the summer, cadets take advanced courses in radio communication, prin-

ciples of flight and propul-sion, airmanship, meteorolo-gy, air navigation and instruc-tional techniques. They are also given the opportunity to tour the Comox Terminal air traffic control unit and 442 Search and Rescue Squadron to expand their knowledge of aviation as a whole. The basic and advanced aviation cours-es hope to inspire cadets to further pursue specialized aviation training, while pro-viding the skill and subject matter knowledge necessary to be accepted into an advanced aviation courses such as the glider pilot schol-arship course.

When asked what the advanced aviation course meant to him, Sidhu said “I was inspired by gliders when I first joined cadets and from then on my main focus has been to get both my glider and power licences and hopefully have a career in aviation.”

Lalande expressed interest in applying for the advanced aviation course and continuing with his aviation education.

“Like the cadet program itself, this course lays the foundation for so many of the concepts that the cadets will

grasp as they move forward in their lives,” said Lt.-Col Keith Stewart, commanding officer of RGS (Pacific). “Fitness, leadership, citizen-ship and stimulating an inter-est in aviation and in the RCAF — it all happens on these courses. For all cadets, these courses are the begin-ning of a career in aviation, or in any one of thousands of different career paths which they may choose to follow.”

Royal Canadian Air Cadets in a national co-educational youth organization sponsored in partnership by the Canadian Forces and the civilian Air Cadet League of Canada. In B.C., there are approximately 3,700 air cadets enrolled in 57 squadrons. The BC Ministry of Education recognizes the cadet program as a ministry-accept-ed external course for which students may receive gradua-tion credit.

If you are interested in join-ing the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Squadron contact 904 Kootenay Squadron’s Com-manding Officer Capt. Dina Gri (250-422-9233) or join 904 Kootenay Squadron Wednes-days at 6:30 p.m. at 404 22nd Ave. S. starting Sept. 16.

Margaret Dawn Goddard

(nee Spencer)

Dawn was born in Nelson, BC to James and Dorothy Spencer. She left in 1949 to study nursing at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC. That is where she met a saucy sailor named Ralph and they were married in November 1952, shortly after her graduation as an R.N.Their rst daughter, Nuese Gail was born in Victoria, their second daughter Tanis Joan was born in Port Alberni and their son Garth Spencer was born in Edmonton. Ralph had promised Dawn that they would see the world, but they didn’t get very far! Dawn followed Ralph to four postings - Edmonton, Portage la Prairie, Bordon, and back to Edmonton. She worked as a nurse in Edmonton and was the head nurse at the Portage General Hospital from 19 to 1971. n 197 , she taught herself to type, and worked for four years as an e ecutive assistant for the Post Of ce in Edmonton. When they were getting ready to retire, Dawn said she wanted to be back in her mountains, so they chose the Kootenays and moved there in 1992. They had eight wonderful years on the lake before they moved into Creston. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2000 and moved into Swan Valley in 200 . Dawn was predeceased by her husband Ralph, son Garth and brother Leigh. She is survived by her brother Philip (Judy); daughters Nuese (Don) and Tanis (Ken); daughter-in-law, Sheila (Garth); and ve grandchildren, Matthew, Evan, Nikayla, Carson and Jessey. She has numerous nieces and nephews as well.

A Celebration of Life will be held soon.

Multi-national Ford Motor Company has charted a quite conservative path through the years. Unlike dedicated eccentrics SAAB, Citroën and even American Motors, Ford has produced few cars that could be characterized as weird, but here are five from Ford (and its Lincoln and Mercury divisions) that still have us scratching our heads:

1982-85 Ford Escort EXP: The EXP (along with its twin the Mercury Lynx LN-7) was simply bizarre. It was supposed to be a sporty two-seater version of the Escort compact, but the styling was incomprehensible. It was touted as a modern, affordable and efficient version of the concept that brought the car world the classic two-seat-er 1955-57 Thunderbird. But where the T-Bird was graceful and elegant, the EXP was just odd, and the squinty, hung-over look to the headlight treatment was particularly strange.

1963 Mercury Monterey Breezeway: The Monterey and its prede-cessor, the Turnpike Cruiser, were standard 1950s and 1960s full-size

Ford Motor Company products, but it was the backward-slanted rear roofline and a

rear window that lowered for ventilation that added a truly strange look to the car, as well as providing ready ingress for exhaust fumes.

2002 Lincoln Blackwood: The Blackwood was a one-year-only Lincoln luxury pickup designed to compete with the Cadillac Escalade XLT. Unfortunately, it turned out to be the answer to a question that nobody was asking—a shortbed luxury pickup that was too nice to haul anything. Less than 3,500 were made in that single year.

1959-67 Ford Anglia 105E: Famous as the flying car from the “Harry Potter” series, this English Ford sported a distinctly American feature — the bizarre, backward-slanted rear window that Lincolns and Mercurys had sported in the U.S.

1996-08 Ford Ka: Another odd duck Ford not seen in the U.S, the Ka was both an oddly named and strangely styled city car that measured just over 142” overall. Performance was largely theoretical as the Ka was powered by a derivative of the ancient four-cylinder that powered

the Anglia. Handling was at least said to be entertaining.

Jamie Fochuk and Soahc Estate Wines of Fruitvale won a bronze medal for their 2013 biodynamic Riesling, but this is only the beginning.

The winery took home the bronze medal win at the 2014 National Wine Awards of Canada in its first full year of production, but Fochuk, Soahc general manager, doesn't let it get to his head.

“It is great to win an award in our very first year, for sure” said Fochuk, add-ing that wine tasting is sub-jective. “It is not something that I put a lot of stock into.

“There are other wines on the list that people think shouldn't be there and other wines that aren't on that list that should totally be there.”

According to Fochuk, Soahc wines have a more European flavour to them, and that is where their prod-uct will be heading next.

“I think from now on, we will be doing international competi-tions,” he said. “We will probably enter ones in France or England. There are North American styles of wine and there are European styles.

“Ours is more of European style because we aren't mak-ing it with tons of oak and things like that.”

Soahc Estate Wines is still new to the wine industry and Fochuk entered their biody-namic Riesling in the contest to see where it sits with its first final product, especially after a rough growing season in 2013.

“I wanted to put it in to see how we would do and the bronze is even a bit cooler for use because it wasn't a great year,” he said. “There was tons of rain in the fall, so I actually picked the grapes about 10 days early because I wanted to get them off the vine. We made the wine in the Okanagan and we got in there before everyone else

did and we didn't have to worry about sour rot.”

Sour rot starts with a kind of fungus that can infect grapes, beginning the fer-mentation process early. The grapes start to smell like vin-egar and make a not-so-good tasting wine.

With the bronze medal behind them, Soahc Estate Wines is already looking towards the future of the winery and final products.

“We should have a little bit of pinot this year,” said Fochuk. “It will be next year that the pinot comes in. In 2015, we will have a fair amount.”

The vineyard is also growing Gamay grapes, used mostly in beaujolais wines.
