The photos Johann Harnisch emailed home to Creston from Nepal in recent days offer a personal glimpse of what residents of Kathmandhu are experiencing in the aftermath of Saturday’s 7.8-magni-tude earthquake.

Piles of brick rubble and teams of medical personnel in full emergency mode, working outdoors, paint a grim picture of a region best known

for its proximity to Mount Everest.Johann, 23, flew from Canada

“Hundreds of people flocked to receive medical attention,” Michelle Harnisch told the Advance in an email that included photos she and Johann’s father, Pastor Rudy Harnisch, have received since Sunday.

The group of volunteers was co-

ordinated by ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency), a Seventh-day Adventist international aid organization. As they went about their mission to provide routine med-ical care, Johann could hardly have imagined what he would soon face.

“Arriving back at Kathmandu last Thursday to see the rest of the team off, Johann and James (anoth-er volunteer) stayed with a local doctor and his wife, waiting to board their planes the following week,” Michelle wrote. “But the

Saturday morning events changed everything.

On May 9, Roshi Zenku Jerry

Smyers, a Soto Zen priest, will conduct the ancient ceremony for renaming a Zen temple. The Creston Zen Centre has recent-ly become an affiliate of the Silent Thunder Zen Order and is changing its name to Sakura-ji, which means Cherry Blossom Temple. If you are among the many who have expressed apprecia-tion for the presence of a Zen Centre in our community, this event provides an opportu-nity to express that appreciation.

Smyers was ordained a Zen priest in 1982. In 2005 he moved to Montana and established the Mission Mountain Zen

Group just south of Kalispell. He is the teacher of Kuya Minogue, practice leader at the Creston zendo. While in Creston, Smyers will also lead a mini-retreat that begins at 7 p.m. May 8 and includes a public talk by Smyers.

The ceremony begins at 10:30 a.m., followed by a potluck lunch. For more infor-mation, call Minogue at 250-428-6500.

On April 20, Crest View Village resi-

dent Marion Bell marked a milestone, turning 104.

“I don’t know how I ever got this old,” she said. “I was born in Pincher Creek in 1911 and moved to Creston around February 1921. One of my first memories of Creston is seeing snow on top of the fence posts; I thought that was really neat because in Pincher Creek the wind blew it all away.”

The people, too, have been a positive aspect of Bell’s life in the Creston Valley.

“I think there is no better place to live than Creston, as far as I’m concerned,” she said. “I have lived a lot of years and have shared my life with some pretty wonder-ful people.”

SubmittedRoshi Zenku Jerry Smyers will conduct a renam-ing ceremony for the Creston Zen Centre.

“Racing back to the hospital, they wondered if the three-story structure would still be standing. Thankfully, it stood, and thank-fully they were there with the doctor and many other willing hands to receive the dying and injured that poured in.

“Since the initial quake, many other aftershocks have terrified, injured and killed more people. Operating on the victims’ broken bones, pouring plaster casts, delivering babies and sheltering patients from the rain in their outdoor emer-gency room — among many

other tasks — has kept the team very busy. They are thankful to be alive and to be of service to the Nepalese during this terri-ble crisis.”

Michelle said on Monday the first two days after the earthquake were agonizing as the Harnisch family awaited word that Johann was safe. Once he was able to re-estab-lish communication, the young volunteer has sent back a steady stream of messages and photographs.

“We were going to go away for the weekend but changed our plans,” Michelle said.

Instead, they were soon immersed in following the news about a string of earth-quakes that has now claimed

more than 4,000 lives and left many thousands more in peril.

In a matter of weeks, Michelle and Rudy have wit-nessed their son complete a carpentry course at Cranbrook’s College of the Rockies, fly off to do volunteer work in one of the world’s most remote areas and take part in an international effort to save lives.

“The information and pic-tures we have received from Johann makes it very real,” she said.

The most recent information before the Advance went to press came from Rudy, who had just received word that Johann is staying two weeks longer — “at least” — to assist with relief operations on the ground.

The Kootenay Lake School District passed its 2015-16 bud-get at the April 21 school board meeting amidst controversy surrounding out-of-catchment area busing.

Initially removed from next year’s budget, trustees Bob Wright and Dawn Lang moved to have it reinstated despite issues that have arisen in collect-ing the $200 fee from parents.

(Out-of-catchment busing involves transporting children whose parents have chosen to send them to schools outside of their normal area, often to pur-sue education in a second lan-guage such as French.)

“If we stop it now the par-

ents who have been paying will be upset,” Wright noted.

The sentiment was echoed by Rebecca Huscroft, who said “it would be quite an insult to fami-lies that have been taking the responsibility to pay their dues.”

And though trustee Bill Maslechko opposed the motion, it received enough support to be included in the capital and operating budget, which came to a total of $59,167,167.

Supt. Jeff Jones told the Star after the meeting that out-of-catchment bussing has been a controversial issue for years, and they have no way to enforce the payment of the annual $200 fee.

That means some parents have paid, and others haven’t. But either way they have to

allow the kids on the bus.“We can’t leave kids on the

side of the highway,” he said. The out-of-catchment bus-

sing is the final recommenda-tion from a 2009 transportation report that hasn’t been imple-mented yet.

“The recommendation was to eliminate out-of-catchment busing completely, and the trustees over time have been reluctant to facilitate that or bring the recommendation to action."

The $200 fee, implemented two years ago, was intended as a move in the right direction. But Jones said it has caused conflict for the district and put a strain on their resources.

“We don’t add new bus routes; we only accommodate

if there’s room on an existing route.”

Jones said the budget illustrates their “contin-ued commitment to putting students at the forefront of our deci-sion-making”.

The budget includes $200,000 to “replace and enhance technolo-gy for work and learn-ing throughout the district” through the Technology Evergreen fund.

Mt. Sentinel and L.V. Rogers will receive $10,000 to support upgrading their PE equipment, and $72,100 will be put towards upgrading aging shop equipment throughout the dis-trict.

Just over $565,000 has been committed to meet the specific needs of vulnerable learners through Community Links.

The district will also hire a technology director to “provide systemic leadership in technology infrastruc-ture and ubiquitous access to support learning and teaching in the district.”

For more information about the budget, visit sd8.bc.ca.

Gone are the days when small B.C. municipalities functioned from budget to budget. At Tuesday’s reg-ular meeting, Creston town council adopted the five-year financial plan (2015-2019), a rolling plan that is updated yearly.

Finance director Steffan Klassen described his process for creating the statutory document to council on April 14, when the plan was given its first three readings.

“2015 economic growth is expect-ed to be better than 2014 at 2.7 per cent,” he said. “Consumer and gov-ernment spending will be restrained due to high debt levels and deficits.”

Klassen said the continuing increase in baby boomer retirees is a

factor, the housing market is trend-ing upward and that the U.S. econ-omy continues to recover.

In Creston, he said that the strug-gling commercial sector will benefit from a lower Canadian dollar, which will keep more shoppers at home. The Creston economy is bolstered by the stability of the health care sector, sawmills and the Columbia Brewery.

“Tourism continues to improve,” he said. “2015 is expected to be up five per cent higher, mainly due to the change in exchange rates.”

Once again, policing costs will be the driving factor in the need to increase the municipal portion of property taxes.

With the policing reserve fund gradually being drained, taxpayers will foot an additional $130,000 of RCMP policing costs, adding 3.65

per cent to the tax load.Other increases — a

consumer price index factor of 0.3 per cent, the fire department’s new first responder ser-vice (0.5 per cent) and a $36,000 addition to the infrastructure replace-ment reserve (one per cent) — will result in a 5.45 per cent tax jump.

Among the chal-lenges the town faces in 2015-16, Klassen

Town council adopts five-year financial plansaid, is that commitments for balanced budgets by the feder-al and provincial government will likely reduce the availabil-ity of grants for infrastructure.

“Gas tax and provincial transfer amounts are not increasing,” he added.

As well, provincial initiatives on policing, carbon neutrality, affordable housing and water conservation download costs to the municipality, he said.

Taxes for general municipal collections will form 34 per cent of local property tax bills in 2015. Municipal policing takes a 10 per cent slice of the pie and provincial education takes 22 per cent. Other town

revenues come from utility frontage taxes (nine per cent of the tax bill). The Regional District of Central Kootenay takes a 23 per cent share of the property tax pie and the remaining small portions go to the Central Kootenay and East Kootenay regional hospital dis-tricts, Municipal Finance Authority and BC Assessment Authority. The proportions were nearly identical in 2014.

Capital spending totaling $1.644 million will include the town’s share of the Pine Street realignment, fire vehicles, pub-lic works vehicles, chip sealing and fire hall renovations.

Klassen provided an outline

of the effect of transferring policing costs to the municipal-ity when Creston reached a population of more than 5,000. The policing reserve fund has gradually been applied to annual budgets, helping to slow tax increases. Another $100,000 from the fund is included in the 2015-16 budget and the remaining $56,000 will be drained in the following fis-cal year.

“Creston cost (of policing) is higher than many municipali-ties our size due to geographic considerations,” he said.

The Town of Creston contin-ues to lobby to reduce staffing and prisoner costs, he added.

Who hasn’t dreamed of visiting Nepal, that mystical, magical home to the world’s great moun-tain climbers’ destination where wide, verdant valleys funnel their way ever upward, narrowing as they approach Mount Everest? Imagine the history of the neigh-bouring area, which includes Tibet, Bhutan (which measures its gross national happiness), Northern India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and China. Long before Mallory and Hillary ever dreamed of climbing Everest, Tibet was considered a mystical and nearly impossible to reach dream of an ancient civilization.

I haven’t been to Asia, but I still felt a chill at the news of a strong earthquake causing snow and landslides and shaking down brick and wood structures in a region that would not get help quickly, especially with Kathmandu’s air-port having to be closed for safety considerations.

Then, on Sunday, emails for-warded by our ever-thoughtful contributor and friend, Ian Cotton, began to trickle in. From them, we learned that Erickson resident Johann Harnisch was in Nepal, and that his mom and dad, after what must have seemed like an interminable wait, had begun receiving messages from a son who was unharmed and safe.

Those photos, showing piles of brick where once stood buildings and makeshift outdoor emergency medical facilities, immediately brought home a sense of wonder for how digital communications has changed the world. Earlier in the day, I had been reading the National Public Radio website, which featured a series of Twitter reports from as far away as camps 1 and 2, miles from the Mount

Everest Base Camp. They are familiar landmarks in the imagina-tions of anyone who has read books about Everest and attempts to climb it.

Those Twitter reports, which tantalized with their immediacy, were roundly criticized by a num-ber of visitors to the NPR web site, some of whom found them unhelp-ful. They wanted tidy, comprehen-sive news articles of the sort that we have become used to from newspapers. Those stories would come, of course, as they always do. But not before reporters were able to get out and about, and use restored communication to gather information.

Twitter, with its 140-character limit and bewildering use of abbreviations, acronyms and hashtags, can be frustrating for those of us who don’t have the patience to embrace yet another form of communication. But as an initial source of information from an area as remote as Nepal, it pro-vided a welcome stream of first-hand reports, getting news out to the world. Satellite telephone feeds and emails, along with Flickr and various photo services, quick-ly supplemented Twitter reports and we got a pretty clear picture of what was happening in a remarkably short time.

As Johann continued to send

friends and family photos of what he was witnessing in Kathmandhu (from which he had planned to be flying homeward this week) I was once again reminded about how lucky we are at the Advance that readers think of us when news happen. “Thought your readers would be interested in a local young man in Nepal,” came the first email from Ian Cotton on Sunday. With the permission of Johann’s parents, he continued to forward photos sent by Johann over the next few days.

On Monday, I spoke briefly with Johann’s mother, Michelle. I only wanted to touch base and be clear that we had permission to use the photos, not to intrude on what is a stressful time for a parent. She was gracious about sharing the photos and updating me on Johann’s story, and I hope to meet this young man who only a few weeks ago was boarding a plane to do volunteer medical work in a dis-tant part of our world. What he has experienced, and witnessed, will surely influence the rest of his life, and I hope he will share his story with our readers.

As mobile as many of us are, for the most part we get our experi-ences vicariously, through books, radio, television and the Internet, which offers endless access to information — good and bad, reli-able and not — and gives us the opportunity to hear directly from people almost immediately. Much of the information is mundane and of marginal interest. In a breaking news story like the earthquake in Nepal, though, it is hard not to acknowledge sense of wonder that we get news — with photos — so quickly.

To the Editor:(Re: “Think on These Things:

Identifying Christians”, page 11, April 9)The author’s focus on God’s love is

to be commended. Nothing can dimin-ish its importance. However, there seemed to be something missing: God’s love in relation to God’s truth. God’s love is briefly described in the Ten Commandments; as Christians choose to become like Christ, they will demon-strate keeping of that law of love in their hearts, minds, and actions, as Christ did. (Romans 3:31, 13:10)

Truth without love can be an instru-ment of cruelty and death. Love without truth doesn’t really care, and will “kill

with kindness”. Love and truth must go together. With one oar, a boat will spin in circles. With two, it can go somewhere.

While it is very true that many “reli-gious” things are nothing more than noise and vapour, love does care about the difference between what is true and false. Ask a parent who loves their child if they are interested in that dif-ference, and why. God’s love is the same. From beginning to end, His word reveals His interest in this differ-ence — not because His ego needs feeding, but because He loves us and wants good for us, not evil. (Jeremiah 29:11, John 10:10)

As Christians love others, they, too, will want to stand for what is good and true. Acknowledging the difference between truth and falsehood is an inseparable component of love. As Christ has shown us, love must take action on that difference, just as surely as truth and falsehood both exist, with their consequences.

Cresteramics has just received a much needed and appreciated donation from Regional District of Central Kootenay Area C director Larry Binks. He has a special con-nection to our agency and has made a donation that will allow us to purchase a computer for our main building. Thank you, Larry.

What is a community partner-ship? It is people working togeth-er to address what matters to them and Birding with Art and Heart is just such a partnership. Wildsight’s Creston Valley Bird Fest commit-tee members are avid birdwatch-ers and conservationists. They are also people who are aware of the needs of others in their communi-ty. As people who understand that everyone has something to offer, they invited Cresteramics mem-bers to partner with them in the operation of the 2015 Creston Valley Bird Fest. Cresteramics members are proving to be valu-able partners as they deliver post-ers, make decorations and table centres, and get ready for an art sale at the bird festival.

The bird festival will start at 11 a.m. May 8 at the Creston and District Community Complex. While registration is happening, Cresteramics members and volun-teers will host a sale of bird- and nature-themed artwork. Creston’s local artist and artisans who con-sign their creations at the Cresteramics Store on Canyon Street will be there to work along-side Cresteramics members. Included will be paintings, sketch-es, birdhouses, photographs, jew-elry and woodwork. Birdhouses, sun hats and crafts reflecting the

bird theme will decorate the banquet room for the eve-ning program. Cresteramics members will help with decorating.

The bird festival commit-tee has arranged for Cresteramics members to make a field trip to the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area. Also, this committee secured funds

from Columbia Power Corporation to assist Cresteramics members to prepare art to be submitted for the 2016 Creston Valley Bird Fest art contest. Included is teaching by a local artist and supplies.

Cresteramics staff member and local artist Joanne Ferry has been helping members who have painted, papered, stamped and decorated an eclectic assortment of birdhouses and other craft items for the bird festival. The birdhouses were made at the Creston and District Society for Community Living workshop and items to decorate with were collected from the Gleaners — a real community effort.

Cresteramics Chatter

Ahhhh. Spring is here, in all its glory, green-ery and warmth. I was out doing some garden-ing prep, you know, stuff like hardening off the plants, turning the dirt in the boxes, weeding, cleaning out the leaves, that sort of stuff. And as it always does when I’m doing chores like this, my mind began to wander. I let it go unat-tended, but made sure it stayed in sight. (I’ve lost my mind a few times... very worrying, until it found its way home.)

My mind began to play with a quote from my latest reading list of practical theology, “It is through other people that we truly become people,” and tried to smush it together with a quote from the U.S. presidential election two years ago, the phrase, “You didn’t build that,” uttered by President Obama. Hmm, I said to myself as my mind juggled the quotes while pointing out everything around me.

I couldn’t be loosening and turning the dirt if someone hadn’t invented the fork I was using, someone else manufacturing it and someone establishing the store to sell it to me. I couldn’t have started my plants indoors if someone (or two or three) hadn’t grown the parent plants, gathered the seeds, packaged them and placed them in the store for me to buy along with the UV lights and pots. Then there’s the potting soil, the electricity and the water. I did nothing to bring them into the house (except pay a bill) but they are all neces-sary for gardening success. Even my home-made compost requires the worms and the horses providing the manure.

I didn’t provide the gravel in the walkways between the boxes nor did I chop down the tree, saw the wood for the boxes or even make the boxes — my husband did that. My mind did not acquire what little gardening knowledge it has by skipping aimlessly through the forests.

good health or prevent the escalation of symptoms, warding off larger crises or more chronic illnesses, and even at times saving young lives.

But unfortunately, the majority of youth experiencing a mental health issue, or their families, do not seek help. Why is this? There are likely a number of key factors: youth and family may lack understanding about mental health issues or may be unable to recognise the symptoms of a mental health problem; they may not know how to access the right services, who to see or how to navigate B.C.’s mental health system; they may be worried about possible stigma or labelling, and hoping it is sim-ply a “phase” that will pass.

As an adolescent and adult psychi-atrist working for the last 11 years in Interior Health (IH), I appreciate how frightening and worrying it can be for youth and families when a mental health issue arises. But I also know that the right help can make all the dif-ference and that good recovery is pos-sible even with some of the most seri-ous of mental health concerns. And “help” does not always mean treat-ment with medication. In fact, many mental health problems in children and youth can be very successfully treated with other techniques, particu-larly cognitive behavioural therapy

(CBT), which, in essence, teaches skills to address the thoughts, feelings and behaviours that underlie a mental health problem.

Working with a group of mental health colleagues in the Interior and on Vancouver Island — including families with lived experience, mental health clinicians from the Ministry of Children and Family Development, health authority professionals, school coun-sellors, family doctors, pediatricians and others — we have come up with a series of short columns to run in this paper to help youth and families recog-nize and understand some common mental health concerns. We will talk about issues like anxiety, depression, substance use, eating disorders, obses-sive-compulsive disorder, schizophre-nia and family support. We will help you recognize the symptoms and know when and how to seek help. We will talk about successful skills, actions and treatments. These columns, as well as running in your local paper, can also be found at www.sharedcarebc.ca, so you can access them online or share with friends and family.

Numerous high quality websites are producing up-to-date information about a wide variety of mental health concerns and in each column, we will link you to online resources in B.C. for more infor-

mation on each condition. A few excel-lent provincial sites to check out now include openmindbc.ca, mindcheck.ca, forcesociety.ca and keltymentalhealth.ca.

In the next column, we will talk about anxiety.

Dr. David Smith is an adolescent and adult psychiatrist and the medical director of the Okanagan Psychiatric services for the Interior Health Authority. This series of columns on common child and youth mental health issues is a project of the Child and Youth Mental Health and Substances Use Collaborative. The collaborative involves multiple individuals, organizations and ministries all working together to increase the number of children, youth, and their families receiving timely access to mental health services and support in the Interior and Vancouver Island regions. The collab-orative is jointly funded by Doctors of BC and the government of B.C.

A new program: “Moving Along Together ” supports clients in our Therapeutic Activation Program for Seniors (TAPS) who experience memory changes and is open to their caregivers and the general community. Funding for this is provided by a grant from Columbia Basin Trust and consists of two 8-week sessions. It is available at no charge except for a meal fee of $6. The program is held at the TAPS Centre located in the lower level of the RotaCrest Hall at 230 - 19 Ave North, Creston, BC. The current program runs until May 27, 2015, with the second program in the fall, dates to be announced. Thanks to the Creston Valley Advance for offering us this column space for the next 8 weeks to share information and resources which we hope will be useful and provide ideas for discussions. This is offered as a complement to other services available in our community and through the Alzheimer’s Society of BC. Excerpts from our weekly sessions will also be on the Valley Community Services website. Thanks also to the The Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program (MAREP) at the University of Waterloo for permission to utilize their guides as a starting point for our sessions, and for us to quote from their series of guides. These “By Us For Us” guides are particularly useful as they are created by persons with dementia and/or partners in care. They are designed to equip persons with dementia with the necessary tools to enhance their well-being and manage daily challenges. All of these guides are available online as well as printed copies. The main link is: https://uwaterloo.ca/murray-alzheimer-research-and-education-program/education-and-knowledge-translation/products-education-tools/by-us-for-us-guidesFrom there you can scroll down to access the individual guides.

Getting To Know Each Other - Getting To Know Yourself

We started our program with introducing each other and writing name tags. We encouraged clients to adapt relaxation techniques for themselves, such as taking three deep breaths whenever they feel stressed or overwhelmed. Another practice suggested is, to look for a “safe spot” to retreat to when going places. It’s important to do that while people are still in the mind-set to do so. Places/functions like a family gathering can easily become overwhelming. Creating a “signal” between the caregiver and the person with memory changes is another technique to make sure the person with memory changes feels safe and can trust that the caregiver/partner will support them by “removing” them from an uncomfortable situation. As the affected person (AP), try to be open about your memory challenges and don’t hide them. If you can’t remember, let the other person know. As a caregiver (CG) encourage the person to share their thoughts and feelings. Give them the time and room to do so. Reassure them that “it is okay” the way they are, that you still love them. Be honest and patient with them. If you are in a hurry, tell them you will get back later to them, when you have more time and keep your promises. For ongoing updates and information, check the Valley Community Services website: www.valley.services.ca following the links at Seniors Services to TAPS then to Moving Along Together.

No, that was purposely gleaned from books and Internet articles written by others, conversations with those of greater experience and working with my green-thumbed father from the time I could pick up a shovel. That’s just a very short list of those who helped make me the “gardener” I am today.

I do a lot of other things as well: cooking, sewing, crafting, to name a few. Who are the people who con-tributed to those activities and helped shape me?

My family is obvious, as are all the teachers I’ve had, as well as authors I’ve read, religious lead-ers, neighbours, my students and co-workers. What about the stranger with whom I exchange smiles, the clerk or the person I accidentally cut-off in traffic? Let’s face it: In some way every single person with whom I have interacted has touched me in some way and that includes the people who influenced them and so on and so on.

Wow! Given the ripple effect, it might even be possible to say every single person on this planet can affect every other person on the planet in some manner.

But it doesn’t stop there. Because we can only exist within our delicately balanced environ-ment, we have to consider our effect on the rest of creation and how it affects us.

There is a saying in the Orthodox Church, “We are saved together but are damned alone.”

There is no personal salvation within the church; we are saved as a community. Jesus is not my per-sonal saviour, He is the saviour of all of creation. I can make a per-sonal decision to choose to join with others on the journey to per-sonhood, helping them as they help me, but I can’t do it all by myself. When everyone depends upon every other one for every-thing, the whole concept of the individual, the self-made man, completely falls apart.

We need each other in order to survive and thrive. There is a grow-ing number of people with physical and mental illnesses. Could this be related to society’s increasing ten-dency towards isolation?

We were not created to live alone, attempting to do so can be damaging if not deadly.

Spring is here and Christ is risen and all of creation with Him! Let us all be part of it.

Creston resident Anastasia Bartlett is the author of Glimpses of Glory and a member of St. Aidan’s Orthodox Church in Cranbrook.

Cresteramics Store manager Val Brooks is working closely with store vendors to make the art and craft sale an exciting event. We hope you will come to the community com-plex on May 8 to enjoy the art dis-play and sale.

This arrangement is beneficial

to both parties because it reduces the workload for one group and gives the other a chance to share its skills. Partnerships such as this increase the community’s aware-ness of each partner while making programs stronger.

The support Cresteramics receives from the Creston Valley helps us be contributing members of our community.

Terry Nowak is a board member of the Cresteramics Society.

Getting mental health help for children and youthFor children and teenagers in B.C., coping

well with the demands of schoolwork, busy schedules and social relationships in today’s chaotic world reflects resilient mental health. But some B.C. children and youth are unable to cope well with the daily stresses of their lives and the results can be debilitating or tragic.

An estimated 13 per cent of youth in B.C. each year experience a mental health issue — that means up to 83,700 children under the age of 19 in B.C. may be suffering. Studies show that receiving appropriate help at the right time may enable a child or youth to return to

BY VALVAN DER POEL

Spring is such a busy time of year that we need to be remind-ed to stop and take time for a bit a relax-ation. What better way to relax than taking in one of the wonderful art displays at the Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce! It could also be an opportunity to pick up something different for Mother’s Day.

The Art in the Library display is “Artistic Journeys”, a look by three local art-ists on where they come from and where they have been. The charming watercolours of Audrey Orosz will take you from the fields of Saskatchewan to the hot climes of Mexico. The vibrant art of Linda Lashbrook will lead you on a jour-ney from cities to coun-trysides to flower gar-dens, all in a variety of media, all a delight to the senses. Anne Graves will share scenes, in both water-colour and acrylic, from Europe to Vancouver and back home again, to sights seen in our own valley. “Artistic Journeys” continues until June 27, so take time to recharge this spring by enjoying the Art in the Library.

“Paintings, Pottery and Pizazz” is what will greet you when you stop in at the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce starting April 30. Many local favou-rites will be strutting their stuff for this exhibit: Win Dinn’s fabulous mixed media, Laura Leeder ’s delicate watercolours, Eileen Gidman’s lovely watercolours and dye-paint-ed fabrics, Andrea Revoy’s quirky pottery cre-ations, Allison Bjorkman’s fabulous utilitarian pottery, Gloria Elliot’s charming variety of acrylics, Carolyn Stone’s exquisitely detailed watercolors, Emmie Roelofse’s fun and color-ful painted fabrics and Jenny Steenkamp’s wonderful oils.

In addition to these well-known local artists are two special exhibitors. Newcomer to the val-ley Karen Tschierschwitz will be displaying some of her charming pastel pieces, depicting a wide variety of subjects. And finally, Lika Meers-Skarznska will be showing a selection of her wonderful tapestries — make sure you have a look at her portfolio to read about the tapestry that has been blessed by the Pope.

Everything you see when you visit will be a delight to the senses and you are sure to be able to find something that you would love to take home with you. We hope you will stop by until June 30 to take that relaxing break from your busy life and enjoy the art. (By the way, during the road construction it might be easier to park in the Creston Valley Farmer’s Market area and enter the chamber from the back door.)

The community art displays are sponsored by the Community of Creston Arts Council, the

Creston Valley Public Library and the Creston Valley Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Centre to enable artists from Yahk to Riondel to display their art and to let the public see the wonders of the world through the artists’ eyes. The art in both locations is for sale so please support the local artists and the venues.

If you would like your name to be on the list to display at one of these venues, contact Val van der Poel at 250-866-577.

talented students’ artwork

Focus on YouthMay 4 - 8, 2015

Prince Charles Theatre

If you go past a school these days, you may hear the sound of singing, dramatic voices, feet stepping in rhythm, or instruments playing. Students may be seen through the windows industriously painting, drawing or sculpting. Private dance or music students are busy too - all of these young people under the direction of their creative and skilled teachers. They are preparing for their performance and visual arts week-long show – Focus On Youth. Crestonites have a unique opportunity not available to any other community in BC – that of being able to celebrate the talents of our young people- and they are many. This is the twenty-ninth year of this non-competitive festival for our youth from ages 5 to 19 who attend public or private schools or take lessons from private teachers. This year there will be fourteen delightful concerts in the Prince Charles Theatre from Monday, May 4 to Friday, May 8 and a visual art show at the Vance Building on 15th Ave from Monday to Thursday of that week. School trustees, town councillors and community leaders show their support by emceeing the concerts. See the complete schedule in this supplement. A donation of any size at the door if you are able will be gratefully appreciated to help with our expenses. As a spring treat to yourself, take in at least one concert and the art display to show support for our most talented young people and their teachers!

“We believe in the future of our town,” says Doug Vance, when asked about the wisdom of opening a new furniture store in Creston.Doug, who, with his wife Charlene, has stocked the Canyon Street store with primarily Ashley furniture, has a lifetime of experiencing Creston Valley’s highs and lows.“Over the last 20 to 30 years Creston went from a vibrant retail centre to a having a main street with too many vacant buildings,” he says. “But over the last few years we believe Creston is turning a corner. And we want to be part of the change.”With a background in the furniture and insurance businesses, Doug sees opportunity where others might see barriers.“There are many new businesses on Canyon Street and in the Alice Siding area,” he says. “And whole new enterprises, including three wineries and organic farming are putting Creston on the map again.”Creston residents have more choices and selection locally than they have had in years.“By giving more choices in home furniture we are hoping to add to this trend and help revitalize our downtown area,” he says.

The recently opened store initially has living room, family room, dining room and bedroom furnishings, including Ashley Sierra Sleep Mattresses. With the help of Charlene’s discerning eye there is also a good variety of art and home accessories.

“Our product is now about 90 per cent Ashley, but we will continue to look for new suppliers to help offer our customers even more selection,” Doug says. “Our business model includes listening to what our customers are looking for and to add variety that suits their needs.”The former Bahamas General Store has undergone a complete makeover. Doug and Charlene did much of the work, with the help of friends and family, and all materials and supplies were purchased from local merchants.

“We would like to express our gratitude to NuFloors, Darren Ronald of Kootenay Decorative Rock, Pyramid Building Supplies, Home Building Centre, Pine Profi les, D-Signs, Multi-Tech Systems, Creston Card & Stationery, Vance Brand Source, Northtown Rental and Creston & District Credit Union,” he says. “And we apologize to any names we have missed. We are pleased with our fi rst month, and grateful to the many friends and new faces that have taken the time to browse our selection. We look forward to seeing more of you!”

RELEASE A JUVENILE WHITE STURGEON!Wednesday, May 6, 2015

2.00 - 4.00 p.m.Old Ferry Landing, Kootenay River Road, CrestonThis is your chance to help an endangered species. Join us for the annual juvenile sturgeon release event! The sturgeon aquaculture program is coordinated by Kootenai Tribe of Idaho with funding from Bonneville Power Administration. The release event is coordinated by the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program, with support from the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, Ktunaxa Nation Council, Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area, FortisBC, and the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. For more information contact the Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program at 250-352-1300

RELEASE A JUVENILE WHITE STURGEON!

FISH AND WILDLIFE COMPENSATION

PROGRAM

It’s time to touch the “ancients of the deep” and release your very own prehistoric-like fish into Kootenay River, at the annu-al juvenile white sturgeon release, taking place at the for-mer West Creston ferry landing (at the end of Kootenay River Road) from 2-4 p.m. May 6.

Since 1992, approximately 220,000 juvenile sturgeon have been released in their historic range in the Kootenay drainage, with an estimated survival rate of 20 per cent after one year of release. If they make it to three years of age, then that survival rate jumps to 93 per cent.

While the survival rates are good, the Kootenay River white sturgeon population continues to face major challenges, and their future remains uncertain.

“There continues to be virtu-ally no natural recruitment — that is to say, the survival through the egg, larvae and into the juve-nile stage — in the river, and this has been the case for more than four decades now,” says Kootenai Tribe of Idaho Fish and Wildlife program director, Sue Ireland. “This stop-gap measure of raising and releasing juvenile sturgeon has been very success-ful and is a critical one in the conservation effort, but much effort is still needed towards implementing habitat restora-tion that should provide condi-tions for fish to successfully reproduce in the wild.”

The Kootenai Tribe of Idaho has been working hard for many years to ensure that white sturgeon remain part of

Annual sturgeon release set for May 6

the local ecosystem. It initiated a sturgeon conservation aqua-culture program, with funding from Bonneville Power Administration, in 1991. The program, the first of its kind, collects wild broodstock adult sturgeon from the river and raises the juveniles in the tribal hatchery in Bonners Ferry, Idaho, and in the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C.’s Kootenay Trout Hatchery.

The public event is co-ordi-nated by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program with support from the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, B.C.’s Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, BC Hydro, Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission, Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C., FortisBC and the Creston Valley Wildlife Management Area.

On May 6, approximately 1,000 10-month old juvenile white sturgeon, each weighing an average of 75 grams and mea-suring between 15 and 25 centi-metres in length, will be released near Creston, with more being released in the U.S. They can grow to the length of a canoe and live for over 100 years.

The Kootenai River sturgeon population is endangered in both Canada and the U.S. due to a variety of human impacts, including the operation of Libby Dam that has altered the natural flow of the river. There are thought to be about a 1,000 adults living on both sides of the border.

For more information white stur-geon, visit gofishbc.com/Sturgeon.htm, and for more information on the release event, contact the Fish and Wildlife Compensation Program at 250-352-1300.

Footlighters celebrating 20 years of dramaBY LORNE ECKERSLEY

Advance Staff

Dozens of performances. Hundreds of performers. Thousands of viewers. The numbers don’t even begin to tell the story of Creston’s Footlighters Theatre Society, the the-atre group that first took to the stage in 1995 with a pro-duction of Deathtrap.

Footlighters was formed by theatre enthusiasts who had other aspirations than the now-defunct Creston Valley Drama Club.

“They (CVDC) wanted to do festival plays and win awards,” said Frank Goodsir, who has directed 37 pro-ductions in Creston.

Goodsir, then an elementary school teacher with a history of pro-ducing musicals at Adam Robertson Elementary School, joined forces with Gail Kitt, Julie Groot, Neal Groot, Ken Blow and Mary Martin to form Footlighters.

“We wanted to do a variety of plays and musicals,” he said.

Goodsir directed the first play, Deathtrap, and the cast included Blow and Kitt. Deathtrap was per-formed in 1995, several months after Creston Footlighters was founded in 1994.

“We chose Deathtrap because it was a very popular play at the

time,” he said. “It ran for 1,700 or 1,800 performances on Broadway.”

The performances were not well attended and the company lost money (a financially successful revival was produced in 2012) . But the next production, Hello, Dolly, changed the tide.

“It took us financially out of the hole after our first year,” Goodsir said. “By the end of year two we had recouped all of our losses.”

“People started to realize we were a viable entity,” Kitt said as she shared memories with Goodsir and current Footlighters presi-dent Brian Lawrence.

Kitt has directed and taken star-ring roles, but she is now happier in smaller roles and to serve as the group’s makeup director. Asked about her favourite Footlighters play, the answer came quickly.

“Cinderella! Even if I did have to flit about the stage! At my age, the knees and ankles are going and they don’t want to flit any more.”

“We actually turned people away at the door,” Goodsir chimed in. “We were sold out and people got mad at me when they couldn’t get in. I don’t know why they were mad at me — I didn’t buy all the tickets!”

Footlighters will be celebrating the conclu-sion of its 20th season with a dance/karaoke costume party on May 8. Watch next week’s Advance for an ad or visit www.facebook.com/CrestonFootlighters for more information.

Goodsir, who wrote and directed Cinderella, named his own favourites as The King and I and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

“We had good casts in both,” he said. “I particularly like musicals because I was brought up on them as a kid.

“But I am happier behind the scenes now, mostly because I can’t remember lines any more!”

Kitt’s preferences lean toward melodrama.

“They were what I did as a kid, way back when I was 13,” she laughed.

As a makeup specialist, she’s had to get creative at times. For one play she had to find a way to darken the com-plexions of most cast members. After several experiments she settled on a simple formula of cocoa and water.

Her directions to the cast? “No licking!”

Of course, what the audi-ence sees on stage is only the tip of the theatrical company iceberg. Planning is done a cou-ple years in advance so that

rights to perform a play can be acquired. A director and key organizers need many months to plan before a cast can be assembled.

For a musical like the recent-ly performed Carousel, musi-cians, a chorus and numerous singers rehearsed — as often as four times a week — for months. Behind the scenes, crews work on building sets, volunteers design, sew and acquire costumes, lighting is designed and publicity efforts are undertaken.

“We try to plan two years ahead and we are just now solidifying our next season,” Goodsir said.

Lawrence, who has been with Footlighters for a decade, has directed and played in leading roles, as well as serv-ing as the group’s president. His favourite roles, he said, were Harold Hill in The Music Man and Carousel’s Billy Bigelow.

“Those roles had been at the top of my list for a long time!”

One of his theatrical high-lights, he said, was to direct Almost Golden. Written by local residents Jason Smith and Susan Chubb, the play was a hit with local audiences and an award-winner at the regional

and provincial competitions (see box below).

“I had never been involved in a play from the very begin-ning,” Lawrence said. “I saw the first draft and was involved from that point on. It was so rewarding to direct and to make it possible for the writers’ vision to come to the stage.”

Almost Golden was one of seven plays written locally that Footlighters has produced.

Goodsir and Lawrence agree that Footlighters’ commitment to include children and special needs people in the cast and chorus has been rewarding.

“Getting a start early often means that they will continue on, or return to the stage as adults,” Goodsir said.

“It’s a fun group,” Kitt said of the Footlighters team. “Everybody mostly gets along! What I really like about Footlighters is that the mem-bers will do anything — egos don’t’ seem to get in the way.”

“We don’t have prima don-nas,” Goodsir agreed. “For example, Brian makes our pro-grams, acts, directs, produces — anything that needs doing, he does it.

“We are very supportive of each other, even when we have differences of opinion.”

Rudolf Gerhard Wilhelm Seemel

Rudy was born in Skoudas, Lithuania, and spent most of his growing up years in both Lithuania and later, after the war, in Germany. In 1949 he emigrated to Surrey, B.C., Canada. In 1956 he met and married Hannelore Volkmann, his wife of 57 years. Together they built a home and raised their family of fi ve children. They moved to Creston in 1998.Rudy was predeceased by Hannelore in 2014, and will be greatly missed by Birgit, Iris, Barbara, Claudia, Rene, and their spouses; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.Lessons learned from Rudy: We learned that there is always room for one more; whether it was in the Volkswagen, at the table for a meal, or on the hay wagon. We learned the value and sheer joy of working with your hands; whether it was digging a well, milking a cow, building a house, or crafting something wonderful on the lathe with a piece of wood, and to be thankful for a fi nished task.We learned the thrill of a mountain top, the beautyof a back road, and the glory of an alpine fl ower.We learned the importance and eternal impactof helping those in need.We learned to laugh and the delight of a wellplaced pun.We learned the value of a good book, especiallyGod's Word.We learned from Rudy a love for, and devotion to,a personal and loving Heavenly Father.

On April 11, 2015 Rudy peacefully went hometo Heaven to be with Jesus.

We will always be grateful for theloving and caring staff at Swan Valley Lodge,

where he spent his fi nal years.

Dorothy (Dee) BartonWe are so proud of our mum, Dorothy Elizabeth (Dee) Barton, and all

she accomplished in her life. Born in Calgary on January 4, 1929, she was raised on her parents’

orchard in Creston, B.C. There, she nurtured a love of gardening and orchard-keeping—notwithstanding the disagreements she had with her dad about how high she should climb on the fruit-picking ladder – and how hard she always fell.

Mum always had a keen sense of adventure. In 1955, she and dad (Stan Barton) drove from Trail to Kitimat, travelling as a convoy with dad’s work crew, heavy equipment, trucks and trailers. Early into the journey, they unloaded one of their Caterpillar tractors to pull their own, and other vehicles, through the door-deep mud of Highway 16 West.

Upon arrival in Kitimat (by train from Terrace), mum and dad took up temporary residence in a very basic plywood shack in Alcan’s construction camp (now Riverlodge): over time, they built a succession of new homes, schools and commercial buildings. Later, they did similar work in Kemano (the site of Alcan’s power station). In early 1960, they moved their operations to nearby Terrace. Once settled, mum and dad continued their construction activities, which by now included the manufacture and erection of pre-fabricated homes. Their companies were Barton Construction, Sav-Mor Builders Centre and Nor-Pine Homes. Mum was in charge of sales and also wore many other hats, both in the business and out.

She taught secretarial skills at the vocational school in Terrace (now Northwest Community College) and worked with new immigrants on their English language abilities. We fondly remember lively gatherings with them at our house in Terrace Winter family trips to Hawaii were a highlight.

Our parents moved to Sidney on Vancouver Island in 1975. After dad died in 1984, mum continued to design and build homes in Victoria. Always very social and wanting to learn, she graduated from the University of Victoria with a degree in sociology at age 70.

In 1997, she designed and daughter, Betty and her construction crew, built yet another new home in Victoria: from there, mum operated a successful B&B for 12 years.

She made all her own jams and wines, prepared spectacular breakfasts, researched all of Victoria’s tea houses, and kept up with the various happenings around town to best advise her B&B guests. In fact, “Dee’s B&B” was touted on the Israeli Tourism web site as, “…the only place to stay when you are in Victoria”.

Mum loved sailing in the Gulf Islands with friends, and later, with son Doug and family. She was an avid hiker and angler. A long-standing Sunday tradition of mum’s at our cabin on Lakelse Lake near Terrace was taking the boat and shing rod out to catch a breakfast of trout to complement dad’s famous crepes.

Mum was an expert pie-maker, particularly known for her blackberry/apple pies from her own ap-ple trees, and blackberries picked personally along the golf course path across from her house in Saan-ich. She frequently did ower arrangements for her church, neighbours and friends; volunteered for many years as an ESL instructor at UVic, and was active in her neighbourhood association. In recent times, she served as secretary at her Abbey eld home monthly member meetings.

Mum sel essly died on February 25, 2015 with her daughter, Susan (who had battled with terminal Multiple Systems Atrophy for a number of years) in Victoria.

Mum is survived by her loving son, Doug McClary (Denise); enthusiastic, smart grandsons Stephen (Alexa), Paul (Emily); Mark and Andrew, and devoted daughter, Betty Barton (Grant Piffer).

CRESTON VALLEYBIRD FEST

Bird lovers, biologists, nat-uralists and photographers are

flocking to Creston for the third annual Creston Valley Bird Fest from May 8-10.

The Creston Valley Bird Fest is a celebration of the

art, the agriculture, and the birds of the Creston Valley. Birding expeditions, presen-tations, photography work-shops and art displays are all

part of the three-day festival.

The festival begins Friday with liquid refreshments and a photography display, followed by a buffet with presentations on great blue herons and bats. Buses then take people to three differ-ent locations: the Wildlife Interpretation Centre to learn more about bats, the Duck Lake dike for an eve-ning stroll with Rocky Mountain naturalists Daryl Calder and Peter Davidson, and to Fox Tree Hill to watch hummingbirds.

Early morning guided birding tours to a variety of habitats are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. This may be your opportunity to see northern orioles, mountain bluebirds, avocets, cinnamon teals, terns, Cooper’s hawks, wood ducks and so many more. With 7,000 hectares of protected wetland and over 300 bird species recorded, the Creston Valley is where the birds are.

The Saturday lunch, catered by the Real Food Café, will sport two more presenta-tions: “Birds of Africa” by Gary Davidson and “Endangered Species” by Dr. Rick Page, a member of the Committee for the Status of Endangered Wildlife. On Saturday afternoon, enjoy tours to four art studios, the organic Kootenay Meadows dairy farm and the Swan Valley Honey Farm, and learn about backyard herbs from Rachel Beck. Children’s events and canoe tours are at the wildlife centre.

Saturday concludes with keynote speaker Dick Cannings — author of 10 books and one of the best authori-ties on B.C. birds.

Birding tours con-tinue on Sunday with bag lunches available.

Over 60 people have registered to date. Some of the lim-ited events are nearly full including “Birding by Bus” and Jim Lawrence’s photogra-phy workshop.

For more informa-tion and to register online, visit www.crest-onvalleybirds.ca or reg-ister in person at the College of the Rockies.
