Order your favourite Sunday on-line at: www.sundayindependent.co.uk e-mail: [email protected] SLIGHTLY re-arrang- ing the words of a well-worn phrase, it’s not just cricket… Though the Fortfield is known locally, nationally and even globally as the home of Sidmouth Cricket Club, it is also home to tennis and cro- quet. And before hockey be- gan to be played on syn- thetic turf, that was con- tested there, too, when the club was known as Sid- mouth Cricket, Tennis, Croquet and Hockey Club. The hockey part was dropped when the Sidmouth and Ottery clubs merged a couple of years ago to be an independent entity, although teams still stage post-match hospitality at Fortfield. But it is cricket that occu- pies centre stage on a ground described by well- loved cricket commentator Henry Blofeld as ‘one of the most beautiful in the coun- try’ after he stayed a night at the adjacent Belmont Hotel during one of his one- man-show tours. The ground, and its tim- ber-clad, thatched pavilion, is steeped in history, too, and when a Sidmouth team went on a tour to Nottinghamshire in 1989 and met the eminent cricket historian, Peter Wynne-Thomas, at Trent Bridge he said that the club, formed in 1823, was among the 20 oldest in the country. A quirk of history is that although Sidmouth has al- ways been well inside the De- von border it was the place in 1875 where Somerset County Cricket Club was, if not born, certainly conceived. That was prompted by a victory over The Gentlemen of Devon by The Gentlemen of Somerset with the win- ning players committing to form the county side. While it cherishes its tra- dition, Sidmouth CC has striven to move with the times and has become one of the pre-eminent forces in Devon cricket, with the fo- cus on the Francis Clark De- von League in which three teams are fielded. Though a respected De- von club, Sidmouth was not a founder member of the League but joined in the year after its inception when it became clear good fixtures against other lead- ing sides in the county had been lost. Until 1990 Sidmouth en- joyed generally good for- tunes in the League’s top di- vision, winning it once in 1988. From 1990 to 2007 the club yo-yoed between the Premier and ‘A’ Divisions. Then in 2007 came an un- precedented run of success for the club at the highest level. While the Second XI had been a dominant force in its Premier Division the first team had never been able to replicate it at the higher level. The maturing of a num- ber of young players, who had prospered in the club’s vibrant Colts section, helped the club win promotion from the ‘A’ Division and then become Premier Divi- sion champions for the next three years, doing the League and Cup double on two occasions. Now the club boasts the Devon captain, Josh Bess, in its squad and the county regularly considers three of his team-mates, Liam Lewis, Scott Barlow and Charlie Miles for selection. Adam Dibble became the first Sidmouth player since Frank Irish, in the early 1950s, to go on to play for Somerset, although others have come to Sidmouth after careers with the Cidermen side. This year, Adam Dibble’s sister, Jodie, became the first Sidmothian to play for England when she was se- lected against West Indies in the Women’s World Twenty20. Going into yesterday’s match at North Devon, the first team was the only un- beaten side in the Premier Division and is targeting another League and Cup double. The Seconds continue to be a competitive member of its division and Third XI players Graham Munday and Robbie Powell have just set a League partnership record of 325 after coming together for the second wicket with the score at 0-1. Key to the club’s standing is its ground, currently un- der the auspices of Colin Whitehall. The playing condi- tions he creates complement the idyllic coastal siting. Sides from all over the world, who visit to play in an extensive midweek cricket programme, con- tinue to marvel at a location which enjoyed exposure on Sky tv during the 2012 Ashes season when a number of Australian club sides were hosted. Devon county sides of all age groups and both sexes play games at the Fortfield and an upcoming highlight is the three-day Minor Coun- ties match against the cur- rent champions, Cheshire, starting on Sunday, July 6. The following Sunday, July 13, Cheshire are back again, this time for the semi-final of the Unicorns Cup one-day competition. The golden age of cricket in Sidmouth is said to have been in the 1920s when lumi- naries such as Sir Jack Hobbs, a candidate for any best-ever England team, and Frank Woolley graced the ground. Other great names such as West Indian Richie Richardson and South African Barry Richards have since played at the Fortfield but there is a feel- ing that now there is a new golden age. dv sports desk (01579) 341 862 (wed-sat) fax (01579) 341 851 53 Sunday Independent June 29, 2014 advertising feature . . .
