Shildon AFC Supporters Club is asking local groups in need of small funding grants to contact it as it prepares to distribute the latest grants from its lottery community fund. The Supporters Club has been distributing grants to small groups throughout the community for the past three years as part of its commitment to supporting local community groups in Shildon and the district. Reports requested for shop theft pairPeter Jones, aged 45 and Stephanie Jones, 20, both of Bouch Street, Shildon, pleaded guilty to a joint charge of shop theft when they appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. The offence occurred on 29th September at the Sainsbury’s Store in Bishop Auckland, when the pair attempted to leave the shop without paying for a trolley full of grocery items, valued at £208.87.In police interview, Mr Jones admitted that neither of them had means to pay for the goods, whilst Ms Jones made no

comment. The court heard that the Jones’s had moved to the area to get away from problems they were expe-riencing in Essex. Stephanie Jones was said to be in breach of a sus-pended sentence order and was due to appear before the court in Basildon. Magistrates ordered a stand down report from the Pro-bation Service in the case of Mr Jones and the court was intent on seeking to put matters in the case of Ms Jones alongside those to be heard shortly in Basildon.

Dear readers of our wonderful Town Crier,

I would like to bring to attention the amount of dog owners walking them clearly with no intention to pick up their mess.

I walk all around this town enjoying our views and heritage daily but the amount of dog mess is unbelievable! Particularly from what was the Mason’s Arms along the path to the railway museum. What museum visitors who walk down this path must think.

Also, the land at the top of Shildon, above what is now Middridge Vale, is again unac-ceptable and spoils it for other users. Jubilee playing fields are just as bad.

People need to stop this habit and stop turning our children's playing fields, our bridle ways and leisure areas into dog muck infested makeshift toilets.

I'm both a responsible dog owner and parent, feeling the effects of a few who aren't. Let's all take pride in this wonderful town and community again!

As part of Jubilee Fields Junior Club project around 'Staying Safe'. children attended a First Aid course on Tuesday 11th August, which was delivered by Allison Morley from the St John’s Ambulance. The course aimed to give children an awareness of what to do in an emer-

gency situation. Throughout the day the children learned who to call in an emergency, the recovery position, resuscitation and how to deal with cuts, burns and dressings. The youngsters will all receive a certificate of achievement of what they

learned. A spokesperson from Jubilee Fields said, “An excellent day was had by all.“The funding was obtained from Shildon Town Council and we would like to say a huge thank you from all the staff and children for making this day possible.”

A local man who ran an illegal waste disposal site in Shildon has been ordered to pay back £350,000 under the Proceeds of Crime Act.Tony Leigh Shepherd, of Winston, pleaded guilty to two offences of operat-ing an illegal waste site at West Musgrave Farm, St Helen Auckland, between August 2009 and March 2011 at a court hearing in late 2013.The 41 year-old could also have to pay back just under £1.2 million – the agreed benefit sum of his criminal activities – if he comes into future assets. He also pleaded guilty to a third charge of op-erating an illegal waste site at Barrier Works on Hackworth Industrial Estate in Shildon, between December 2010, and July 2011.The Environment Agency claims that he had been running a waste transfer

facility on the land – il-legally depositing, sorting and storing mixed house-hold and industrial waste. He appeared at Teesside Crown Court on 24th February 2014, where he was sentenced to 12 months in prison, suspend-ed for two years.Environment Agency officers then began pro-ceedings to recover the value of his available assets that the Agency claims were obtained through crime. On Monday 17th August 2015, following a confisca-tion hearing at Teesside Crown Court under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Mr Shepherd was ordered to pay back £350,000. It is one of the biggest seizures of cash by the Environ-ment Agency in the North-East to date, and he could face a prison sentence if he fails to pay. And, if he comes into future assets he could

have to pay back more of the £1.168million agreed benefit sum, according to the Agency. The Agency’s waste and enforcement manager for the North East, Andrew Turner, said, “This is a sig-nificant confiscation order and sends out the message to others who flout the law that waste crime does not pay. They will not only be hit with court action but they’ll also be hit in the pocket. This is a debt for life for Shepherd as any assets in the future could go towards paying back the full amount.“Waste crime undermines legitimate businesses and can have significant detrimental impacts on communities and the en-vironment. This hearing demonstrates how seri-ously we take waste crime and we’ll continue to take action against those oper-ating outside of the law and the regulations.”

A Worcestershire man has written a biography of one of the great overlooked names from the early days of steam.George Turner Smith chronicles the life of Thomas Hackworth (1797-1877), the brother of Shildon’s beloved Timothy Hackworth.Smith believes Thomas has been greatly overlooked by history, having both the fortune and misfor-tune of being the brother of a renowned railway engineer. He was party to some of the most famous early railway experiments. He was there at the birth of the Puffing Billy and Wylam Dilly and built some of the first locomotives used on the Stockton and Darling-ton Railway. He was also a major contributor to the growth of both Shildon and Stockton-on-Tees which, according to Smith, would not be where they are today without his acumen and engineering expertise. However, his life was eclipsed by the success of his brother, and who once referred to Thomas as ‘poor Tom’ when he was made the scapegoat for a series of problems at Shildon. The U13/ U15/17s Northern Championships took place at Middlesbrough Sports Village over the weekend with Rachel Bennett adding the U15 Girls 100m title to her growing portfolio of achievements this year. Having gone to the top of the UK rankings in this event, Rachel was a leading contender for gold and eased through to the final winning in 12.50 seconds. The final proved to be a hard fought battle with Rachel having to come from behind to win by the narrowest of margins in 12.45 seconds. The U15 Girls 200m proved to be a similar story with Rachel again qualifying for the final easily in 26.40 seconds but a second gold eluded her as again she had to come through the field to claim silver in 26.47 seconds. Courtnie Mills ran in the U17 womens 300m where she produced an impres-sive performance to finish 4th in a new PB of 42.31 qualifying for the final. In the final, against strong opposition Courtnie again showed fighting spirit to produce another PB to finish 7th in 42.29 seconds. Lewis Marley was the third member of the Sprint Group to run at the event and ran in the U17 mens 100m. In his heat, despite a slow start, Lewis fought back magnificently and managed to recover to finish 3rd in 11.80 seconds to qualify for the final. In the final Lewis again faced strong opposition

Competing against a quality field, Leah took advantage of the near perfect condi-tions to produce her best performance of the season setting a new PB of 4m 22cm. Although not enough to achieve a podium place, she can be proud of claiming a fine 6th place overall.Ian Rudge completed the Gateshead Trail 10k on Saturday 15th in a respect-able time of 50:23.

Another thumping league win last midweek for Shildon was dampened on Saturday by a 1-1 draw in the FA Cup at the home of local rivals, Bishop Auckland. After an opening day 5-0 away win, Shildon entertained promoted side, Norton and Stockton Ancients and put the new-comers to the sword with a thumping 8-0 win. The visitors held the Rail-waymen for the opening 20 minutes, but by half time, Shildon had found the net five times through a Mark Doninger chip, a Michael Rae double a Lewis Wing thunderbolt and a headed goal from Carl Jones.Further goals in the second half from Doninger and club captain Mark Hudson, along with an own goal, sealed a miserable night for Norton. It was a different story for the league leaders at the weekend when they trav-elled the short distance to

Shildon Railway Cricket Club’s first XI sit proudly atop the Darlington Building Society North Yorks and South Durham Premiere Cricket League Division Three with a 61 point advantage over nearest rivals Norton. This position was con-solidated after gaining the maximum 25 points in each of the last two league games, after Saltburn conceded and Yarm were then hammered. At Yarm, Shildon had hoped to put the home side in to bat but lost the toss and the Railwaymen had to be careful on a sticky wicket. However, skipper Greg (52) and his brother Bret Upton (102 not out) led the side to an impressive 228 for 6 in just 44 overs. Shildon’s bowlers then carried out a real demoli-tion job on Yarm, as the hosts were bowled out

Heritage Park to face local rivals Bishop Auckland in the FA Cup Extra Prelimi-nary Round on Saturday. An out of sorts Shildon were fortunate to reach the break on level terms after Stuart Thompson missed four glorious chances to give the Two Blues the lead in the first half, but it was the same player who eventually opened the scoring with just 20 minutes remaining. A poorly worked Shildon free kick on the edge of the Bishops area was in-tercepted and the home side burst forward before Thompson hit a shot on the turn from the corner of the penalty area. The diving Shildon keeper, Lewis Graham, allowed the shot to bounce and could only watch help-lessly as it sailed over him and into the net.Although the goal came from an unforced error, it was no more than the home side deserved for

for a paltry 39, with Phil Garbutt (3 for 20), Rob Nevison (3 for 4), Chris Young (2 for 7) and Richie Arnott (1 for 0) relishing the conditions. The second XI’s visit to Blackhall saw Michael Lumley lead the way with the bat, as Shildon made 168 for 9 in the allotted 45 overs. However, the visitors’ bowling attack was below par and the Seasiders cruised to a four wicket win, only young Jack Mens-forth (3 for 28) bowling with any distinction. On Saturday (22 August), the first team host Preston-on-Tees at the Sportsfield and with only six league games remaining, will be looking to strengthen their position as division leaders. On Sunday, the second team visit Saltburn. The Under 15s crashed

their endeavours and it looked like it may be enough to win a tight en-counter against the strug-gling Railwaymen. However, as time ebbed away, the Bishops defence retreated further in their efforts to keep the visitors out, leading to a series of late incursions for Shildon. With two minutes remain-ing, a half cleared corner was returned into the box for new signing Gary Brown to beat the keeper to the ball and set up Mark Hudson to nod home the equaliser and take the tie to a replay at Dean Street on Wednesday night (19th August).Shildon almost stole the tie with the final play of the game but it would have been rough justice for Bishop who dominated lengthy spells of the game.Shildon’s next league fixture, at 3pm on Saturday afternoon, 22nd August, is a home tie against Bedling-ton Terriers.

out of the Durham Cricket Board Plate, losing a close game at Philadelphia. This concludes the fixtures for this season for both junior sides and the club wishes to thank coaches John Young and Mal Dover and all who have helped with the juniors this season. The Juniors’ Presentation Night will be held at the BR at 7.30pm on Thursday 29th October.
