The aircraft carrier Bonaventurearrived in Halifax Friday morning,October 13, and fired a 13-gun salutefrom Commodore M. G. Stirling, SeniorCanadian Officer Afloat (Atlantic), toRear-Admiral K. L. Dyer, Flag OfficerAtlantic Coast. The salute was returnedby naval field pieces firing 11 guns fromthe Dockyard.
The salutes brought to a close athree-week trip during which Commodore Stirling took a task force into farnorthern waters, more than 1,200 milesfrom Halifax, for anti-submarine exercises. In addition to the Bonaventure,there were flve destroyer escorts, the.British submarine Aurochs, RCAF Maritime patrol aircraft and a. large USNtanker which visited Halifax with thereturning ships. More than 2,500 sailorswere involved in the anti-submarineexer.cise in Hudson Bay and DavisStrait. The Bonaventure steamed a totalof 5,200 miles on the voyage.
No day :went by in which at leastsome flying was not accomplished.Sometimes the rescue and· utility helicopter (Pedro, the busy little burro)was the only one ·about its business oftransferring mail, material and passengers among the ships. Pedro's hours

totalled about 60 and she landed eighttimes on board destroyer escorts and 20on board the tanker Neosho, whoserefuelling kept the fleet going. Pedro'scarrier landings totalled 130 because ofnormal plane guard duties.
The Neosho achieved a milestonewhile fuelling the Bonaventure. Lt. J.G. Richard Wright, USN Supply Corps,of Philadelphia, came aboard and. presented a huge cake to Cdr. HowardMinogue, engineer officer of the carrier.On the frosting was written "To the200th customer of 1961".

ron 880's sea detachment. Seven ofthe crews of the 18 carried by theBonaventure are being exchanged withothers from shore. This semi-annual andpartial switch enables the squadrons tokeep the pitch of operational readinessreasonably constant.
Since the detachment was embarkedlast May, its Tracker aircrews haveflown more than 2,400 hours from theship and more than 1,400 while deployedto various Atlantic provinces air bases.The detachment has taken part in fourmajor exercises in addition to normaloperational commitments.
Wrens Celebrate10th Anniversary
Wrens from naval divisions acrossCanada met in Winnipeg on Thanksgiving week-end to celebrate the 10thanniversary of their membership in thepeace-time RCN(R).
More than 80 reserve wrens werepresent for the celebration; which included a civic luncheon given by theCity of Winnipeg, a dinner and danceat HMCS Chippawa, the Winnipeg navaldivision, and a church parade.
Divisions represented at the reunionwere: Brunswicker, Saint John; Cataraqui, Kingston; Griffon, Fort William
The third largest award ever made by the Suggestion Award Board of the Public Serviceof Canada and the largest ever awarded to a member of the Department of National Defenceserving with the Navy, was presented on October 11' to William Kingston, second from right,by Vice-Admiral H. The reunion was attended by Lt.-Cdr.Constance Ogilvy, Staff Officer Wrens,Naval Headquarters, and Lt. Fanta Tait,Staff Officer Wrens to the CommandingOfficer Naval Divisions, each of whomwas presented with a certificate ofhonorary citizenship of Winnipeg by theDeputy Mayor during the civic luncheon.
On Sunday evening an entertainmentwas held at which skits were presentedby CMppawa, Donnacona and Discovery.
Chief of Naval StallVisits West Coast
Vice-Admiral H. S. Rayner, Chief ofthe Naval Staff, visited the Royal Canadian Navy's Pacific Command fromOctober 25 to 28.
During his tour he conferred withRear-Admiral E. W. Finch-Noyes, FlagOfficer Pacific Coast and Maritime Commander Pacific, and visited ships andestablishments of the command.
Admiral Rayner also addressed theNational Council of the Navy League ofCanada at their annual meeting in Victoria October 26 and 27, which saw theelection of Cdr. F. C. Aggett, RCN(R)(Ret) as president of the organization:

Bandsmen recruits of all three ArmedForces began training at the RCN Schoolof Music, HMCS Naden, Esquimalt, onNovember 1.
Under the new scheme, intake ofapprentice bandsmen for the first yearwill be 51. Two classes a year areplanned, in May and November, reaching an anticipated peak intake of 137in May 1963.
The decision to train bandsmen ofthe three services at the RCN establishment was taken on the recommendationof the National Defence Personnel Members Committee who noted that RCNband apprentices had been trained successfully at Naden for the past sixyears, and that with additional instructors and certain alterations to existingaccommodation, the training of bandsmen of the other services could beeffected easily and economically. TheArmy and the RCAF are providinginstructors to augment the RCN staff atthe school.
New entry training will be givenbandsmen recruits by their respectiveservices before they commence trainingat the RCN School of Music. All personnel of the school will be under thecommand of the Commodore, RCN Barracks, Esquimalt.
Pilots' WingsAwarded to 24
Twenty-four sub-lieutenants of theRoyal Canadian Navy have beenawarded their pilots' wings after successfully completing the first phase oftheir flying training at RCAF StationSaskatoon.
They are now taking an intensivecourse, which includes advanced flyingtraining for conversion to Tracked antisubmarine aircraft and to helicopters,to bring them up to second pilot standards. Other elements of the course aresurvival, anti-submarine warfare andmaritime warfare.
Ten of the officers have been appointed to VU-33, utility air squadronat Patricia Bay. The remainder havebeen appointed to Shearwater, for VU32 utility air squadron, and HU-21utility helicopter squadron.
Joining HU-21 are: Acting Sub-Lieutenants William A. Cook; D. C. Hallaran,
and Bruce E. McKay, and Sub-Lt.Herman P. Muenzer.

Suggestion WinsAward of $1,778
A suggestion by William P. Kingston,of Bathurst, N.B., and Ottawa, a technical officer on the staff of the Directorof Supplementary Radio Stations atNaval Headquarters, has earned himthe third largest cash award evergranted by the Suggestion Award Boardof the Public Service of Canada, andthe largest ever awarded to a memberof the Department of National Defenceserving with the Navy. Mr. Kingstonalso received a congratulatory letterfrom the Chief of the Naval Staff forhis achievement.

Mr. Kingston has been awarded $1,778for a suggestion for a modification tothe pedestals, of certain radar sets usedin ships ·of the Royal Canadian Navy.
The idea, which will save thousandsof dollars, was forwarded to the Suggestion Award Board· f'or evaluation byspecialist officers and has been adoptedfor RCN use.
Mr. Kingston. entered "the RCNVR inJuly .1944 as a radio artificer. He transferred ' to' the regular fotcein December,1946, served twice in Korean watersandtook his discharge in December, 1956.He taught school briefly 'at Bathurst in1957 'before entering the Federal civilservlce in July of that year.. He servedon 'the staff of the Electrical Engineerin-Chief until December 1960, when hetransferred to his present position.
First Lord PaysV isit to Ottawa
A distinguished visitor to Ottawa during'mid-October was the 'Rt. ,Han. LordCarrington, First Lord of the Admiralty.
During his visit, from October 16 to18, Lord Carrington conferred withHon. Douglas S. Harkness, Minister ofNational Defence, and senior defenceofficials~ He was introduce.d to membersof the Naval Board by Vice-AdmiralH. S. Rayner, Chief of the Naval Staff.
Lord Carrington became First Lordof the Admiralty in, October 1959, afterserving in other British governmentposts since 1951.

A' university education and a militarycareer will be combined by 147 youngmen from across Canada who havebeen accepted into the Royal CanadianNavy as officer cadets under terms ofthe Regular Officer Training Plan.
Eighty-eight of the successful ROTPcandidates have been accepted for entryinto the three Canadian Services Colleges: Royal Roads, Royal Military College and College Militaire Royal deSaint-Jean.
The other 59 will attend un~versities.
The Regular Officer Training Plan,common to the three armed forces,provides young men with an opportunityto receive a subsidized university degreeeducation while at the same time proceeding toward professional officers'careers.
Included in the successful applicantsthis year are three lower deck membersof the Royal Canadian Navy (Reserve).They are: AB Robert J. Lees, of Vancouver, who will attend the University

HeN Officer JoinsArg'entine Cruise
A Royal Canadian Navy officer, Lt.Cdr. Neil St. C. Norton, has ·been ·appointed' as RCN observer with 'theArgentine Navy for a four-month cruisein the Antarctic.
Lt.~Cdr . Norton left for Buenos Aireson October 10, and the expedition wasto sail from there October '20.
Lt.-Cdr. Norton was selected for theappointment when the Argentine Navyextended an offer for an officer of theRCN to accompany the expedition as anobserver.
The expedition will be in two phases.The first will be concerned with icepenetration while the second will betaken up with antarctic scientific work.The ships will return to Buenos Airesbetween phases, and on completion oftheir work at the end of February 1962.
Lt.-Cdr. Norton is no stranger to conditions in high latitudes. He served inthe Canadian Arctic in HMCS Labradorformer RCN arctic patrol ship, and isa navigation specialist as well as ithydrographer. He had served as NavalHydrographer at Naval Headquarters,from March 1960.
Pioneer OfficerDies in Halifax
A tie with the very beginning of theRoyal Candian Navy was broken lastsummer with the death of EngineerCaptain Angus Downes Mathwin Cttrry,OBE, RCN (Ret), in Halifax.
Born in Newcastle-on-Tyne, CaptainCurry was 21 years old when he joinedHMCS Rainbow, first ship commissionedin the Canadian naval service, in August1910. He was one of the first two officerscommissioned in the Canadian NavalForce, as the sea-going branch of theservice was then known. Both were enrolled on August 10, but records do notindicate priority.
Captain Curry served during the latterpart of the First World War as an instructor on the staff of the Royal NavalCollege of Canada. In addition to holding RN and HeN seagoing appointments, he was chief engineer of bothdockyards and for six years, from 1935to 1941 he directed the RCN's engineering services, first as Director of NavalEngineering and latterly under the newtitle of Engineer-in-Chief. From 1941until his retirement in 1946 he was Engineer Captain to Naden and ChiefEngineer Esquimalt Dockyard.
He died in Halifax on June 25.
Army OfficerQualified Diver
A Canadian Army officer serving onboard the Bonaventure has attained aunique qualification. He is Capt. W.Donald Creighton, who qualified earlierthis year as a naval clearance divingofficer (ships) when he took a divingcourse at the RCN Diving Establis:q.mentin Dartmouth, in May of this year. Hisnormal duties are those of GroundLiaison Officer in the carrier.
He is believed to be the only personin the Canadian Army to qualify as aclearance diver since the Second WorldWar.
Capt. Creighton was posted to theBonaventure a year ago from the2RCHA, in Winnipeg, as carrier-borneGround Liaison Officer. His small organization, plus Dental Corps people, bringto 10 number of personnel in Armyuniform braving the briny deep inCanada's biggest warship.
Capt. Creighton, who grew up inWestville, near New Glasgow, N.S.,served briefly in the Army as a gunnerin the Second World War until pluckedoff a troopship about to go overseaswhen it was discovered he was only 17years old. He later joined the- RCAF,training as an air gunner, just beforehostilities ended.
He then went to Mount Allison University, N.B., graduating as a bachelorof science and entered the RCA as a2nd lieutenant in 1951. He is married tothe former. Shirley Campbell, also ofWestville.

Although the composition of theRoyal Canadian Navy's fleet was mainlydirected toward meeting the submarinethreat, the Navy was not limited toanti-submarine operations alone, Admiral Rayner said. The fleet must beready to meet other obligations, somearising out of Canada's membership inthe United Nations, others from thenecessity of protecting and controllingmerchant shipping, of guarding har....bours and coastal areas against thethreat of mines and of being readilyavailable to assist in survival opera....tions on shore and search and rescueat sea.
The major portion of the addressfollows:
In my job as CNS, said AdmiralRayner, I am constantly being madeaware by all sorts of people in variousways of the "large measure of goodwill the Navy' enjoys across the land.At the same time I am frequentlysurprised by the lack of understanding,again by all sorts of people, as to justwhy we have a Navy, what its pur...pose is, and why the control of theseas and sea power are so important.
However, this shouldn't really comeas a surprise. The only truly satis...factory way to get to know and under...stand something of the sea and shipsis to go to sea, and comparatively fewin this vast land have the opportunity.But one can learn to appreciate theimportance of the control of the seasby study and reflection ...
We are a maritime nation with threefar-fiung coast lines, the Atlantic, thePacific, and the Arctic. The control andthe maintenance of the freedom ofthe seas is vitally important to thesurvival of a maritime nation. Historyhas proven this basic principle onmany occasions. Today, the use of theseas in peace is vital to the free world'seconomy and in war is indispensableto its security. In time of strife, ifready and properly used, control of theseas can mean the difference betweenvictory and defeat.
Sea power can be quickly concentrated and brought to bear wherever itis needed. Its deployment cannot beprevented by the denial of over-flyingand staging rights. It can be heldpoised in readiness at sea, withoutencroaching on a country's sovereignty;and it can remain unobtrusive. It isthese factors that make the Polarissubmarine such an important weaponsystem.
It is true to say that control ofthe seas is just as important today asit ever has been in the past. I thinkthat recognition of this fact is theprime reason that Russia has in beinga force of over 400 sUbmarines.
The Russians have obviously beenmost impressed by and have correctlyappreciated the importance of seapower. The enormous submarine fleetwhich I mentioned is modern and haslargely been rebuilt since 1951. Mr.Khrushchev has said that Russia isnow building a nuclear submarine fleetwhich will be armed with missiles.Moreover, in the past ten years theirmerchant fleet has doubled to a totaltonnage of 4,000,000, and their fishingfleets have increased many times overto about 3,000 trawlers. Thus, whiledevoting tremendous efforts to theeconomic, military, political and scientific fronts, Russia at the same timeis taking major steps to ensure thatshe can use the seas in peace and war.
I would like to illustrate for youwhat the lack of sea power meant tothis country in the Gulf of St. Lawrence during the first years of the lastwar and then show how the situationimproved when we had more ships.
At the start of the Second World Warin 1939 the RCN was very small. Ourfew destroyers were more than fullyemployed escorting troop and tradeconvoys out of Halifax bound for theUnited Kingdom. The defence of shipping in the St. Lawrence River hadto take low priority.

In 1940, after Europe had been overrun, giving the enemy submarine paseson the Atlantic, the Naval Staff madeplans to deal with submarine attackson shipping in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. However, apart from numerousfalse "alarms and excursions" therewere no genuine contacts with theenemy during that year or the next.The long-expected arrival of theGerman U-boats took place in May1942 and a merchant ship was torpedoed and sunk 35 miles north ofGaspe on the 12th. Emergency planswere immediately put into effect, andshipping was organized into convoys.One of the latter, QS-15, was attackedin July and three ships were sunk.September 1942 was the worst monthof the war in the St. Lawrence. Fourmerchant ships and HMCS Raccoonwere lost from QS-33, and on 11 September the corvette, HMCS Charlottetown, went down in less than fiveminutes after being torpedoed byU-517. Three more ships were sunkin September and one in October.
Perhaps it was during one of theengagements in this hectic and frustrating summer, when the few escortsavailable were doing the best they couldalthough sorely overworked, whentempers and patience were runningshort, that a corvette captain after ablast by the leader of the escort ,group,who was a permanent force officer,made the signal, "Very sorry, butplease remember I'm only a poorbloody stockbroker."
At this time Canadian escort forcesavailable for the St. Lawrence werestill inadequate. The main commitment of the navy was protection of thevital transatlantic routes, and it wascorrectly surmised that the Germanswere attacking in Canadian waters to"draw off" ocean escorts from the maintask.
Our inability to concentrate sufficientsea power at the new point of attackin the St. Lawrence had two adverseeffects on the war effort. Firstly, theRCN came under considerable criticismin parliament and the press during theGaspe attacks for its alleged failureto provide adequate A/S protection. Atthe time secrecy concerning defenceresources prevented the government ofthe day from replying to its critics,with a detrimental effect on nationalmorale. The second adverse effect wasthat although heavy coastal traffic continued to use the St. Lawrence, oceangoing vessels were reduced to a minimum in 1943.
As it happened, owing to the Alliedoffensive strategy overseas and successes against German U-boats elsewhere, the latter did not return to the

River until late in 1944, but meanwhilecargoes which could have been shippedfrom St. Lawrence ports were takenby rail to' Saint John and Halifax witha consequent strain on rail transportation.
Enemy submarines did return to theSt. Lawrence in the fall of 1944, buttheir old advantage had gone; twoships were torpedoed in October, butneither sank. By this time escortgroups and aircraft were available instrength to deal with any therat andno further attacks occurred. Five yearshad passed since the hectic and makeshift days of 1939, but the interveningperiod in the St.Lawrence clearly illustrates the necessity for a maritimenation to matq.tain adequate sea powerto protect shipping in focal areas.
Bearing in mind the lessons of thepast and looking to the requirementsof the future, the Navy defines itspurpose' as being to ensure that Canada,in concert with Allied and friendly nations, will have unrestricted use of theseas in peace and war.
Because the principal threat to thefree use of the seas is the submarine,the primary role of the RCN in supportof Canada's defence policy is anti-submarine.
The design and armament of ourships and aircraft and the compositionof the fleet as a whole have beenplanned with the primary object ofmeeting the submarine threat. However, this does not mean that we arelimited to anti-SUbmarine operationsalone.
We have other tasks. We must beready to conduct operations arising outof Canada's membership in the UnitedNations which could well involve supporting the Canadian Army in a landing operation.
We are responsible for the protectionof the sea lines of communication, andthis involves the control of merchantshipping off our coasts as well as its
protection. We must provide minesweeping forces and clearance divers tosafeguard our harbours and coastalareas against a mining threat. Also, wehave to be ready to assist where wecan in .survival operations on shore,and we must be ready at all times tohelp in maritime search and rescue withwhatever units and facilities we haveavailable at the time.
These then are the principal tasksthat we may be called upon to carryout. To cope with them, the Navyoperates a carrier having fighter andanti-submarine aircraft, 14 of the latesttype destroyer escorts, 11 older destroyers, 18 modernized frigates, twomaintenance support vessels, twosquadrons of minesweepers and anumber of auxiliaries and smallercraft..
In addition, out of Halifax we areoperating the Sixth Submarine Squadron on loan from the Royal Navy andmanned partly by our own personnel.Also the Grilse, a submarine on loanfrom the USN and manned entirely bythe RCN, is based here in Esquimalt.We are most grateful to the RN andthe USN for making available thesesubmarines which are absolutely essential for training A/S ships and aircraft.
A replacement program for the oldervessels is under way. Six new destroyer escorts to be known as ,theMackenzie class and basically similarto the present Restigouche class areunder construction. We are also building a 22,OOO-ton tanker supply ship.This ship will be named Provider andwill be used for replenishing ships atsea.
I think it might be interesting tocompare the Navy we have now withthe Navy we had ten years ago, in1951, when the Korean build-up andour new construction programme werejust getting under way.
In 1951-52' the naval appropriationwas $236 million. In that year we had13,500 officers and men in the service;we had 20 ships in commission and50 naval aircraft. Also at that timeabout 38 percent of· the personnel inuniform were serving at sea. Thestrength of the HeN in men and shipsin 1951 was the highest in peacetimehistory.
Now let us look at comparable figuresfor 1961. The naval ... appropriation thisyear is very nearly $280 million. Thatis about 19 percent more than thebudget of ten years ago. Within thisamount we are operating a fleet of 60combatant ships and 80 aircraft. Ourtotal strength is just over 20,000 officersand men. Thus we have' almost tripled
the ships in the fleet with a personnelincrease of 50 percent and a budgetincrease of less than 20 percent.
Manning this fleet are personnelwhose proficiency is recognized by othernavies and whose standards of education, physical fitness and morale arevery high. At the present time nearly51 percent of our personnel in uniformare at sea. This is a very high sea/shoreratio by comparison with any othernavy and is something our men canbe very proud of. It costs their familiesa good deal.
Ashore in the dockyards, headquarters, and training establishments, wherewe have just over 11,000 civilian per-
sonnel as well as over 9,000 in uniform,all efforts are directed towards the support of the fleet-for it is the fleet thatis the true expression of the Navy'sworth.
An integral component of the navy isthe Royal Canadian Navy (Reserve),and I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to those Canadiansin 21 of our communities from coast tocoast who devote so much of their sparetime and their summer holidays totraining for their country's service.
In the heat of debate in the Houseof Commons in September the Ministerof National Defence, Mr. Harkness, summed up the Navy's position: "Our ships
are in a state of immediate readiness. Atpractically all times some of them areat sea. They are, therefore, availableimmediately to counter enemy submarines."
This is a capability of which· we arevery proud and which has only beenachieved by a strong and sustainedeffort. We intend to maintain it. In addition we need strong public support toenable the Navy to keep up-to-date nowand in the future.
A great deal of careful thought andplanning is being devoted to meeting thechallenge of the future with its increasingly rapid scientific and technologicaladvances.

In 1921 the Royal Canadian Navy acquired its first two destroyers, the Patriot and Patrician. The laller ship was based at Esquimalt from 1922until she was finally paid off in 1928. In 1923 the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve came into existence. L. Colin Curtis, of Kamloops, B.C.,recently sent this picture of the ship's company of the Patrician to The Crowsnest and, as it shows a number of RCNVR personnel borne for training,he concludes the picture was taken no earlier than 1923. Although morethan 38 years have passed since the picture was taken, Mr. Curtis has been able to identify quite a number of faces. The Aldergrove PoolSelf-Help Achieves What Public Funds Couldn't

grove, the naval radio station in thelower Fraser Valley, have, on swelteringsummer days, expressed their wish fora swimming pool. The usual approachwas made to have a pool built withpublic funds but, alas, tri-service policyprevented this.
At a Welfare Committee meetingduring the latter part of 1959 a majorityvote established a ways and means committee to explore the possibilities andthe costs of constructing a pool to befinanceq by the Ship's Fund. The findings of this committee were as follows:
On the assumption that land, water,access to shower facilities arid electricitywould be provided by the Departmenta 20-by-40-foot pool could be built forapproximately $2,000.
The financing of the pool was to bearranged as follows: A $400 donationfrom the chief and petty officers' mess(later raised to $500); a $50 donationfrom the wardroom meSs (later raisedto $80); $800 in redeemable pledges

from personnel of Aldergrove; and $750from the Ship's Fund.
The Welfare Committee approved theplans and a submission was forwardedthrough Flag .Officer Pacific Coast toNaval Headquarters. In due course,official approval was received.
Work on the pool began on May 23,1961, and ended on July 16, 1961. Allworking parties were voluntary andtremendous assistance was given bysoldiers from Camp Chilliwack.
The pool took 40 yards of machinemixed concrete and an additional 18yards of hand-mixed concrete went intothe walkways. Landscaping required 80yards of fill and topsoil, which was handgraded and sown to fine grass. Sufficientmaterial to build a 250-foot-Iong fencewas donated by a local lumber yard.
The final cost of the pool exceededthe original estimate by approximately$200. This was due largely to an extension of the concrete walkways.
Through stringent economy on thepart of the Ship's Fund all bills havenow been paid and there is but $265 in
redeemable pledges outstanding, whichshould be fully redeemed by December31, 1961.
The pool waS officially opened onAugust 3. Two barbecue units were setup for cooking hot dogs which wereeaten to the music of a local five-pieceband, which donated its services. Thepool was christened "The Ship's FundPool". The first man dunked was POAndy Eburne, which was most fittingin that he had given more time thanany other man to the actual construction of the pool.
In this effort more than 1,000 manhours of labour were required. Thepool, complete with automatic filteringsystem, diving board, walkways, lawnand fencing, now stands as an outstanding example of what can be achievedwhen many people unite in a commonpurpose. In so far as is known this isthe first pool built in the Royal Canadian Navy with non-public funds andit is certain the present and future complements of this establishment will fullyappreciate this effort.

The officers and men of Albro Lakenaval radio station at Dartmouth havereceived the plaudits of the Military SeaTransportation Service of the USN fortheir assistance in maintaining radiocommunications with MSTS ships during this year's Arctic re-supply season.
Messages of thanks were sent to AlbroLake by Rear-Admiral Harry Hull, USN,who was in charge of the operation, andVice-Admiral Roy A. Gano, USN, headof MSTS.
Admiral Gano said the dependablecommunications provided by Albro Lakepersonel had materially contributed tothe success of the 1961 MSTS Arcticoperations.
Cape Scott. TurnsTroop Carrier
HMCS Cape Scott on October 10 became a temporary home for 345 officers,non-commissioned. officers and otherranks of the First Regiment, RoyalCanadian Horse Artillery. The occasionwas the first peace-time Navy-Army
sealift training exercise on the EastCoast. Dubbed Exercise Sea Horse, theoperation was designed to evaluate thetroop-carrying potential of the AtlanticCommand's fleet repair ship.
The morning following embarkationof the troops was taken up in loadingtheir vehicles. Five three-quarter-tontrucks, 15 jeeps, four jeep ambulancesand 14 trailers were loaded on deckand lashed down in preparation for thevoyage. The Cape Scott got under wayat 1600 and a fine evening presaged acalm cruise to Saint John, New Brunswick.
During the ensuing 30 hours theweather remained clear and an "army"sea prevailed to the extent that not onecase of seasickness was apparent andthe soldiers seemed to thrive on seagoing routine. The officers kept bridgewatches with the officer-of-the watchand the troops handled lines; armysignalmen paired off with the ship'scommunications personnel; army cooksworked side by side with their navalcounterparts in the galley to prepare
1,400 meals a day and several soldiersmanaged a trick at the helm.
In order to make room for the troops,the Cape Scott's repair staff of 100 officers and men had been left ashore inHalifax. Although most of the personnelslept in bunks, in order to accommodatesuch a large number of people many ofthe ship's company and some 50 soldierswere treated to three nights in hammocks during the exercise. This was asnew an experience for some of theyounger sailors as it was for the troops.
The Cape Scott came to anchor offPartridge Island on the evening ofThursday, October 12, to await the tideand, entered the harbour of Saint John,the following forenoon. The troops disembarked after lunch to return by roadto Camp Gagetown. The deck load ofvehicles was landed during the afternoon with the ship's derricks to complete the operation.

Cadets ShowEnrolment Gain
The sea cadets and Navy Leaguecadets of Brandon, Manitoba, havebegun their winter training season withan enrolment almost double last year's.The current strength of cadets attachedto RCSCC Swiftsure is 255, comparedwith last year's figure of 130.
Another achievement' is the formationof a 43-:piece brass band. Money forthe instruments came from 11 tag daysponsored by the Brandon branch of theNavy League of Canada and from generoUs donations by Brandon merchants.-D.K.H.

Fourteen senior naval officers from 12nations spent a week in Canada asguests of the RoyalCaIiadian Navy, andtoured Canadian naval and commercialinstallations from October 21 to 28.
The officers are taking a United StatesNavy Senior Allied Officers SupplyManagement Course in Washington, DC.The purpose of the course is to acquaintofficers of other navies with USN supplymethods. This is the third year a visitto Canadian naval and industrial establishments has been arranged as partof the course.
Countries represented were: Belgium,Chile, Canada, China, Denmark, France,Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Pakistan, and Portugal.
Cdr. B. E. Gaynor, is the RCN officerparticipating in the course. Cdr. JamesW. Thomson, who attended last year'scourse, was RCN liaison officer for thevisit.
Naden Plans EarlyFor Christmas
The true spirit of Christmas is reflected in Yuletide plans that got underway at an early date in the PacificCommand.
Several hundred children of less fortunate families in the Greater Victoriaarea are going to have a happier holiday because of a special project inHMCS Naden during the last two weeksof November.
During that period a Christmas toyshop was to operate in Naden for naval

personnel and their dependents. All proceeds from the top shop were to gotoward entertainment and gifts foryoungsters of needy families. Volunteering to staff the shop were members ofthe RCN Ladies' Auxiliary and off-dutynaval personnel.
Other gift-raising plans included alarge receptacle at the toy shop wherecustomers could donate toys. It was alsoplimned to have one new toy includedas part of the admission price to anyChristmas party held in Naden forfamilies of RCN personnel. Toys collected in these ways will be distributedto needy families of the area.
Last year, close to 600 children of lessfortunate families were entertained andpresented with gifts at Christmas programs held by ships and establishmentsof the Pacific Command.
Veterans OpenNew Clubrooms
The new clubrooms of the Hamiltonbranch of the Canadian Naval Association were officially opened on September30 by Commodore P. n. Taylor, Commanding Officer Naval Divisions.
Other guests included His Worship,Mayor Lloyd D. Jackson, of Hamilton;Commodore .R. I. Hendy, Senior Navalofficer, Toronto Area; Herbert Maynard,president of the Canadian Naval Association; Cdr. W. T. Houghton, commanding officer of HMCS Star, the Hamiltonnaval division, and representatives of
the federal, provincial and civic governments.
A parade and march past by the band,. guard, gun crew and sea cadets ofRCSCC Lion added a touch of pageantryto the occasion. The salute was taken byCommodore Taylor. The sea cadets drewmany favourable comments on theirprecision and smartness.
The cutting of the ribbon by Commodore Taylor to mark the opening ofthe clubrooms was accompanied by asalvo fired by the gun crew.
Following an inspection of the clubrooms by the guests, a buffet luncheonwas served by the Ladies' Auxiliary tothe Hamilton Naval Veterans' Association. Commodore Taylor referred to thelate president of the Ladies' Auxiliary,known to thousands of Second WorldWar naval veterans as "Ma" White, ofDundas, and suggested the new quartersmight well be considered a memorialto that lady.
The president of the association, S.R. Piner, said he hoped many moreveterans of the Hamilton area wouldlend their support toward strengthening the association and building it inthe best traditions of the service inwhich they were privileged to serve.
He said that the club had obtained aprovincial charter earlier in the yearand it looked forward to continued andgrowing success in meeting the socialand economic needs of veterans andtheir dependents in the Hamilton area.
He promised that the club would continue to support the objectives of theCanadian Naval Association across theland.
The scissors used in the ribbon-cuttingceremony were presented to CommodoreTaylor in a suitably inscribed case intoken of the appreciation of the Hamilton Naval Veterans' Association.
Central OntarioSea Cadets lJfeet
Nearly 250 sea cadets from sevencorps across eastern and central Ontarioparaded in Belleville on October 29as the guests of Royal Canadian SeaCadet Corps QuJnte, of Belleville, forthe local corps' annual inter-corpschurch parade, sports day and bandcompetition event. Following Sundayservices the corps, accompanied by threeSea Cadet bands, returned to the Belleville Armouries. The salute was takenby Ontario's new Area Officer SeaCadets, Lt.-Cdr. C. E. Shaver.
Following lunch the cadets competedin the various sports events whichincluded swimming, basketball, shooting, rope climbing, a tug-of-war andfoot races. The overall HCock of theWalk" trophy awarded to the corpsreceiving the most points earned bysport's events and rifle marksmanshipwent for the second year in successionto RCSCC Hanow~ll, of Picton.
The tug-of-war championship trophywas won by the team from Drake, ofOshawa, while Quinte's marksmen shothigh scores in the rifle competition.
Competing for the Victoria and Greyband competition trophy were bandsfrom Storntont, Cornwall; Skeena, PortHope; and Drake, Oshawa. This eventwas won by the Cornwall sea cadet bandfor the second year in a row.

Prof. c. C. CookLeaves Royal Roads
After many years of teaching officercadets at Royal Military College andR.oyal Roads, Professor Clarence C.Cook has retired. For the past sevenyears he had been director of studiesat Royal Roads.
Professor Cook joined the staff ofRMC in 1924 as an instructor in physics.For two war years, 1940-42, he wasprofessor of artillery at Kingston, withthe rank of major.
He joined Royal Roads, then the RoyalCanadian Naval College, in 1942 andeventually was appointed in charge ofthe physics department with the rank ofinstructor commander. After the warhe retnained on the faculty as a civilian. Up to his retirement in August,he had served a total of 19 years atRoyal Roads.
He proudly recalled, following hisretirement, that many of the officercadets who passed through his classeshad gone on to fill the highest posts intheir respective branches of the service.
"They come from all provinces andrepresent all branches of the service,"Professor Cook said. "For four yearsthese young men live, work and playtogether, a circumstance that probablydoes more to unify Canada than anyother single factor."
Navy League EssayDeadline Extenlled
The closing date for essays submittedin the 1962 competition for the NavyLeague of Canada naval history prizehas been changed from March 1, 1962, toJuly 25, 1962.

His paper, The Quoddy Bulletin, published in Eastport, Maine, circulates notonly on the Maine side of the International Boundary but also on nearbyCampbello Island, which is part of NewBrunswick. It averages 12 pages, isprinted by the offset process and, as canbe expected, is illustrated with Stittphotography.

THE RESERVE'S SUMMERT HE SUMMER TRAINING season
for naval reservists from acrossCanada drew to a close at the GreatLakes Training Centre, HMCS Patriot,Hamilton, on September 8. From its beginning on June 4 to its close, the program offered training to 665 men andwrens.
Dozens of other members of theRCN (R) took part in a new generaltraining program at either coast. Itspurpose was to bring the training andexperience of ordinary and able seamenmore closely into line with that of theregular force and to assist them inqualifying for promotion.
The various courses offered throughthe Great Lakes Training Centre were:New entry training, parts 1, 2 and 3,on-the-job training (OJT), and preparatory training for communicationsand squadron boards for promotion topetty officer, second class, and chiefpetty officer, second class.
New entry training, parts 1 and 2, wasprovided at Patriot for new entrytrainees who had joined the naval reserve late in the year and were unableto complete this training at their homedivisions before the summer trainingperiod commenced. It was a two-weekcourse consisting of general seamanshipand parade training. NET 1 and 2 is aprerequisite for NET 3 which involvestraining at sea in one of the ships basedat GLTC.
The classes in NET 1 and 2 ran fromJune 1 to August 18, during which time130 trainees successfully completed thecourse. Reserve officers directed thetraining and the instructors, all RCN,ranged from leading seaman up.
On-the-job training was provided asspecial duty upon completion of NET 1,2 and 3 for men marked "trained". Thetraining included first aid, fire-fightingand rifle drill, as well as rifle and pistolshooting, sailing, and educational tours,which included a visit to the Steel Company of Canada plant and a trip up theWelland Canal in a freighter. Specialemployment was also provided for thoseinterested in being medical assistants,storesmen, cooks, administrative writers,paywriters and shipwrights.
Classes commenced on July 1 andcontinued until September 1. Approximately 390 men underwent OJT thissummer. Efforts were made to makethis practical training more interestingand enjoyable than in previous years.

New entry training, part 3, consistsof two weeks' basic seamanship carriedout in the Great Lakes. This summerthe two frigates, the Lauzon and Buckingham, and the supply vessel Scatarieach carried out five two-week trainingcruises encompassing all of the GreatLakes during the 10-week period.
The frigates carried training classesabout 40 strong with two reserve training officers in charge, while the ScatCLricarried 20 in a glass giving, an overalltotal of 502 men trained "at sea".
The actual training involves practicalwork in hoisting and lowering seaboats,coming to anchor, rigging awnings andbooms, learning knots and splices, handling lines and fenders and similar evolutions in basic seamanship. Jackstaytransfers and gunnery shoots are carried out at least once during each cruise:
During each day the trainees receiveat least three-and-one-half hours instruction, work part-ship and standwatches during the night as helmsman,
lookout, lifebuoy sentry and bridgemessenger.
The cruises are arranged so that thetrainees spend at least one week-end ina major port on the Great Lakes. Duringthis time various tours are arranged.
.At the end of the two-week cruisethe trainees write their part 3 examwhich consists of a written paper andpractical tests.
From here the trainees either returnto Pah"iot for OJT or else go straight totheir home divisions. The NET 3 program is designed for all reserve ordinary seaman regardless of their futurespecialty.
Basically it gives them some idea ofshipboard routine and teaches them howto live in a ship in fairly cramped quarters while undergoing a vigorous training course.
Communication training in the Communication Training Centre at Patriotbegan in earnest in mid-June and continued through to mid-September. During this period the number of instructors, both visual and radio, fluctuatedbetween two and nine and consisted ofall ranks from leading seaman to chiefpetty officer, RCN and RCN (R). Threewren petty officers were also employedas instructors during this period.
A total of 103 new communicatorsreceived communication indoctrinationcourses upon completion of their newentry, part 3, courses in training shipson the Great Lakes.
Of the total of 265 communicatorsborne in reserve divisions across Canadaprevious to this summer's recruitingprogram, 172 received either on-the-jobtraining in operational ships in the Atlantic and Pacific Commands or formalspecialty group courses in the Communication Training Centre. Includedin this number were 32 wrens takingteletype or radio operator courses.
Besides communication courses inradio, visual and teletype for specialtygroups levels one to six, courses andexaminations were conducted for twolieutenants qualifying and two pettyofficer squadron boards.
This summer at GLTC an activesports program was carried out for thereserve personnel. Compulsory P&RTperiods were given to all "trainees" andwere supplemented by a recreationalprogram for on-the-job-training seamen. This program included softball,volleyball, touch football and soccer.
The highlights of the season were twotabloids of sports held on the playingfield, with all departments in the establishment represented. Commodore P. D.Taylor, Commanding Officer NavalDivisions, and Captain J. C. Littler,Chief of Staff, presented the awards tothe winning teams.
An annual swimming competitionwas also established and the LumsdenTrophy for the GLTC championshipwas won by the team of leading seamenand below. Captain Littler presentedthe award.
During the summer there were twosquadron boards in Patriot. The objectof these boards was to prepare pettyofficers 1st class and leading seamen toqualify professionally for chief pettyofficer 2nd class and petty officer 2ndclass. This required instruction in allphases of seamanship, communications,and elementary navigation. The courselasted for a period of two weeks at theend of which time oral examinationswere given.
A total of six petty officers and eightleading seamen took the board and allbut two were successful. They will bere-examined in their home divisions.
More trainees than ever before werevictualled on board Patriot this pastsummer and extra accommodation hadto be found. In spite of this, few failures were recorded in any course andthe general impression was that thetraining had been successful and that,of the new entries who have passedthrough Patriot this summer, many willmake excellent seamen.
Reserve seamen from all corners ofthe country also journeyed to the twocoasts during the summer as theRCN (R) launched its new general training program to bring the reserves instep with the "New Navy".
With the emphasis on seamanship andweapons the new reserve general training scheme is designed to give the Navymen '<who would, in time of an emergency, fit into the fleet quickly and usefully.

This group is, for the most part, com- .posed of ordinary seamen who havecompleted their second year of training.During the first year they did new entrytraining, parts 1 and 2, at their divisionsand part 3 at the Great Lakes TrainingCentre. Last winter they formed partof the first group to undergo generaltraining 1 (A) at their divisions andupon successful completion of this andPart B on the coast became eligible forpromotion to able seamen.
During their two weeks on the coastthe reservists were put through a rapidand hectic routine that had them busyat all times. This included weaponsunderwater, parade training, small armsfamiliarization, sailing and pulling, firefighting, a glimpse of naval diving andP&RT.
The successful candidates are nowback at their respective divisions doinggeneral training 2 (a) as they start onthe road that will take them from anable to a leading seaman.-M.S.B.

RN submariners, based in Halifax, have established a reputation for strenuous outings. Their latest effort of this kind, in August, involved onegroup cycling to Clam Harbour while another proceeded from Halifax to the same point by sea. The sailors then became cyclists and vice versa. Thepictures, taken by Chaplain (P) William Water, show the ar'rival of the cyclists, the whaler being hauled ashore for the night, the preparation of asnug bivouac of sails and cedar bows and a scene on board the whaler during one of the less boisterous moments of the journey.

P HYSICAL FITNESS, self-reliance,initiative, and sundry other similar
ideas passed through my mind when Ifirst heard of the "Outward Bound"organization last fall in the UnitedKingdom. It was a little difficult to discover exactly what the thing was allabout, beyond the fact that it promisedto be extremely interesting and verywell worthwhile. At last the opportunitywas offered to observe this expeditiontraining in action, for, on August 14, ascheme moved off from HMC Dockyardin Halifax.
Seven members of the RN's 6th SUbmarine Division set out from Stadaccmaboat shed in a whaler for Clam Harbour, some 40-odd miles by road alongthe Eastern Shore. Another group offive set out on its unsteady way uponan assortment of bicycles, which hadbeen kindly loaned by Haligonians asa result of an appeal through newsmedia.
Both teams arrived, at Clam Harbourbeach without incident. In fact the
cyclists 1nade the trip all in one day,arriving about 2100, while the whalercamped the night in Jeddore Inlet, afew rniles short of its destination.
Both teams, but particularly thewha.ler, were helped on their way bya following breeze. On each morningthis started blowing very gently, increasing as the day wore on so thatlVlonday ajte?'noon found tlhe whalerrunning under mizzen and fores'l onlyand still ??taking fro??t four to five knots.This was accompanied by a mildly unco?nfortable sea which encouraged thecoxswain to go quite far into J eddoreto find she Iter for the night.
Next morning, setting out about 0900,the breeze proved too light to sail thewhaler out against the tide, so the nexthour was spent pulling until the windgot up as less-sheltered water wasreached. Sail was then set and thewhaler beached at its destination about1230.
It was regrettable that I was unableto cycle up to the rendezvous with thesecond party but, joining them by carat about 1800 on the 15th at Clam Harbour, I found a splendid camp fire builton rocks, complete with benches and amost effective windbreak. This was setbetween a spruce wood and a b.eautifulsandy beach· on which the sea, drivenby a steady onshore breeze was breaking· in a very business-like fashion.Around the rocky point was a sandycove in which the whaler was beached,After a meal of wieners and beans, wehauled the whaler higher up the beachto leave her safe for the night from therising tide.
The next task was to rig shelters forthe night. The party that had sailed upused the boat's mainsail and mizzen toform a protection, and this proved veryefficient, with the aid of spruce bowsfor a windbreak. The cyclists, meanwhile, built a marvellous haven fromrain and wind purely from branches ofevergreen.
Wrapped in an assortment of blanketsor sleeping bags, we passed a mediocrenight-each man sleeping in proportionto the degree in which fatigue overcamelumpy ground or knotty spruce mattresses. One or two of us can vouchfor the fact that the wind continued toblow steadily onshore all night and thisdid little to help us when we launchedthe whaler the following morning, trying to kedge off the beach, which wasnot only a lee shore but also closebounded by rocks.
For four hours we beat steadily towindward, crouching low against thecold of the wind and spray that dashedover us from time to time. Abeam Jed-
dore Rock, we were able to make onelong tack across the near Three FathomHarbour. We were not long on thistack, however, when an ominous boom...iug was heard ahead. The customaryargument arose as to whether it wasgunfire or thunder, but the coxswainwas right as usual when he forecaststorms.
Off Story I-Iead, the rising sea combined with wind squalls and rain tomake life quite unpleasant, and wemade a couple of unsuccessful attemptsto find a sheltered cove to beach theboat before we finally reached the shoreat Hackeye Island. As we approached,a couple of figures appeared on thebeach, directing us to a safe landing.Hauling the whaler up the beach putthe finishing touches to our dampenedfeelings and we were now for the mostpart thoroughly soaked from wadingwaist deep in the cold sea.
The anonymous "natives" now provedto be very good friends indeed. Onholiday in their cabin, they took us in,dried us out before a roasting fire, entertained us to a magnificent chickendinner, and put us up for the night.
At 0930 the next day we ran easilyout to sea before a shore breeze, whichunfortunately died down almost tonothing, and we spent a slow day beating against fitful puffs of very lightwind. We did not come abeam of Devil'sIsland until about 1600, but as we didso, a rather brisk breeze got up fromthe southwest, giving us hope of a longreach up the harbour. Strictly in character, however, the wind veered almostimmediately and we had a great deal oftrOllble beating up Eastern Passage inthe face of the ebb tide. At last wecame alongside Stadacona boat shednot long before 2000.
What conclusions could be reached?Only this: in our present state of material wealth; we in Canada fall sadlybehind many other countries in physical fitness and endurance. It seemsthat there is an urgent need for greaterparticipation in sports programs of alltypes.
Expedition Trai.ning is calculated notonly to improve the physical conditionand moral fibre of both officers and men,but these schemes are almost invariablyenjoyed immensely and will provide awelcome break for the participants fromnormal Service routine.
The "Outward Bound" aim, "Character Training through Adventure", maywell be advanced in the RCN throughsuch expedition training schemes as theone recently accomplished.-W.W. and \J.N.S.

A Mace for Dartmouth

I N 1950 the Royal Canadian Navy presented a mace to the City of Halifax
to commemorate the long association theRCN has had with the city. On January 1, 1961, Dartmouth was incorporated as a city, and it was consideredappropriate that the RCN should presentthe new city with a mace in recognitionof the long and happy association thathas existed between the Service and thecommunity.
The presentation was made by RearAdmiral K. L. Dyer, Flag Officer Atlantic Coast, at the Dartmouth city hall onOctober 17.
Rear-Admiral Dyer pointed out thatthe association between Dartmouth andthe· Navy dated back more than 200years. During the command of ViceAdmiral Boscawen, the first Britishnaval commander at Halifax, the Dartmouth area provided much-needed freshwater to ships at anchor in the harbour.
Dartmouth's phenomenal growth,which led to its incorporation as a city,dated to the Second World War, said theadmiral.
"It was during this period that theNavy's stake in the community becameapparent. The naval complex in thisarea included the Bedford magazine, theNaval Armament Depot, Albro LakeRadio Station and various waterfrontfacilities-all of which became permanent installations.
"In the post-war years, HMCS Shearwater was commissioned and the NavalResearch Establishment of the DefenceResearch Board was provided with anew home here.
"Today these establishments aremanned by approximately 2,300 navalpersonnel and employ in the neighbourhood of 1,700 civilians."
Rear-Admiral Dyer said the Navy'sstake in Dartmouth was more than aneconomic one.
"Hundreds of sailors and their families live among you as neighbours,whether it be in service housing developments at Shannon Park and Shearwater, or as private residents of thecity. They participate in all aspects ofyour community life-and are proudto do so."
He presented the mace to the mayorand city council, with the assurance thatthe Navy would continue to y.'ork withthem for the bright future in store forthe City of Dartmouth.
The Halifax mace was constructed inthe Engineering Division of the FleetSchool (formerly known as the Me-

chanical Training Establishment) and,therefore, this division was called uponto fashion one for the new city. ChiefPetty Officers N. C. Brumm and C. R.Howe of the division seized eagerly uponthe idea and produced a design whichwas acceptable to the city council. Themachine work and construction of themace were undertaken by CPO Brummand PO John Edwards. Cd. Off. D. G.Smith, of the Engineering Division, constructed the patterns for the coat ofarms and badges that are mounted onthe mace, as well as supplying theactual-size drawings to reproduce theornate emblems that surround the base.
The design of the mace incorporatesseven "flats" or facets to denote theseven wards that amalgamated to formthe new city. On each facet is mounteda coat of arms or a badge. These are thecoats of arms of Canada, the Provinceof Nova Scotia and the City of Dartmouth and the badges of HMCSStadacona, HMCS Shearwater, HMSAlderney and the Defence ResearchEstablishment. These establishmentshave enjoyed long association with theCity of Dartmouth, and it was thought
fitting that their badges should be borneon the new mace. Alderney was thename of the ship that brought the firstsettlers to the new land, and hence itsbadge was also included. The presentAlderney is an RN submarine, whichhas seen considerable service with theSixth Submarine Division, operatingout of Halifax.
The seven scalloped edges on the apexof the mace head are intended to denotethat "in peace and war ships of allcountries have sailed past the City upontheir lawful occasions on the sevenseas". Three lines below the scallopededges denote the waves that wash uponthe city's shores. The remainder of themace was designed the same as thatdonated to the City of Halifax. This wasto signify the common bond that haslong existed between the two cities.
Nearly every shop of the school contributed some part to the constructionof the mace and the case in which itrests. The personnel take pride in thefact that their efforts have taken amaterial form that will be a reminderof their place and that of the RCN inthe communities in which they live.

HMCS Lauzon
The middle of June saw the Lauzonslip from Jetty Two in Halifax andmake her way up the St. Lawrence Seaway.
After a brief stop at Crysler Park andparticipation in ceremonies marking theopening of Upper Canada Village, shecontinued on to Hamilton where sheestablished her headquarters for thethree busy months ahead.
Under the operational control of theCommanding Officer Naval Divisions,the Lauzon made five cruises. Eachcruise was of two weeks' duration andeach had the object of providing a basicsea training program to Reserve newentries. The individual cruises featured
TV rooms, reading, writing and gamesrooms on the main floor and roomycabins with laundry, drying rooms, ironing and pressing facilities and kit stowage space on each of the upper stories.
It is" hoped that the new mess may beready for occupancy by Christmas 1962.

Dedication prayers were conducted byboth Protestant and Roman Catholicchaplains, after which the first sod wasturned by Commodore Medland. In hisaddress, Commodore Medland expressedfaith in the contractors and the hopethat it would not be much longer beforeStadacona CPOs and POs could "luxuriate" in their new home after enduring more than two and a half years oftemporary accommodation.
The new chief and petty officers' messreplaces the old building which wasdestroyed by fire in February 1959. Sincethat time, Stadacona has been withoutpermanent accommodation for the senior men. Two wartime buildings werepressed into service-one for livingquarters and the other for cafeteria andrecreation facilities.
The new four-storey building is estimated to cost $750,000 and will provideup-to-date living quarters with everymodern convenience, including an ultramodern galley and spacious cafeteria,together with two lounges, billiard and

HMCS Stadacona
Late September saw the culminationof months of planning for the newchief and petty officers' mess at Stadacona with the official sod-turning ceremony conducted at the site of the newbuilding.

HMCS Cape Breton
The repair ship Cape Breton hasagain proved her versatility in an unusual role as "Princess of North Vancouver".
On September 15, she embarked approximately 300 North Vancouver boysand girls, cadet, school and Air Forcebands, precision drill teams and theirsupervisors for transportation to PowellRiver, B.C., where they participated ina tri-service cadet corps searchlighttattoo.
A parade was held in nearby Westview with the commanding officer, Cdr.M. F. Oliver, acting on behalf of theFlag Officer Pacific Coast, taking thesalute. The skirl of pipes and the rollof drums, mixed with rock and rollmusic, provided entertainment of anunusual type aboard one of HMC Ships.
Both the outward and homewardbound passages were ca"rried out inperfect weather constituting a never-tobe forgotten weekend for the youthfulpassengers.
This was only the second time in 18years that the Cape Breton has returnedto the port of her origin. The first timewas during August when she participated in the PNE celebrations, andwas berthed at Lapointe Pier a fewhundred yards from the ways whereshe was laid down in 1943.
On the second occasion she berthedat the same jetty in North Vancouverwhere she was fitted out as HMS Flamborouglt Head for the Royal Navy.

Navy Day was celebrated in Port Arthur last summer on the occasion of the visit of HMCSLauzon, during the frigate's summer training cruise on the Great Lakes. The Lauzon entertainedvisitors on board the ship and staged a variety of demonstrations, culminating in a modifiedversion of the sunset ceremony. Pictured are Ldg. Sea. R. J. one or two ports of call and each weekend found the frigate lying quietlyalongside in a different port while hership's company scattered through towntaking advantage of the many kindfacilities which were offered.
Although the Lauzon was alone whenshe visited such ports as Milwaukee,Windsor, Toronto, Kingston and Collingwood, she spent a great many days atsea working with the. Buckingham,which was employed in the samemanner.
During the hours the two ships operated together there· was certainly notime at which boredom reared its uglyhead. From early morn to late eveningtheir two bows sliced the lakes as theycriss-crossed and turned through OOWmanreuvres. The air rang with thesharp cracks of line-throwing rifles asside by side the ships effected jackstaytrallsfers, it rang again to the heavyexplosions of four-inch guns as theyinsulted various surface targets, andeven the cloak of darkness did notalways settle peacefully, for many astarshell shoot was conducted.
When the work palled late in theafternoon the two ships glided to restand the water about them boiled withsplashing, cannonballing, swimmingseamen. Mid-way through the summer atwo-ship regatta took place for thelofty (if obscure) crown of "Cock ofthe Walk, Great Lakes." Good-natured,optimistic challenges issued boldly forth.Boats were turned out, lowered, andpulled with a vengeance, one againstthe other for the honour of the ship.Upper decks lined with loyal supportersreverberated catcalls, threats, insultsand cheers while the quieter bridgesexchanged well-mannered dark looks.The Lauzon emerged from the fracasfirmly holding the coveted crown, withbrooms hoisted at every yardarm.
Before leaving the Lakehead for thereturn journey, the Lauzon celebratedNavy Day in Port Arthur. The shipand her company were fine examples ofnaval ceremonial splendour and environmental flexibility. She was clean,neatly dressed, as were her men. Shewas ·well organized, as were the evolutions performed both aboard and

ashore. Throughout the day scores ofLakeheaders treated themselves to sightsof the Navy in action. Navy Day afternoon events, while visitors thronged theship, included firefighting demonstrations, flaghoisting and semaphore displays, 20-man liferaft drill, away seaboat crew, divers attacking and diversdefending the ship.
The coming of evening found thestreets of Port Arthur filled with musicfrom Griffon's band and the sound ofmarching feet as Lauzon's 25-man guardparaded through town. Sunset was ob-
served with a modified version of thetraditional naval sunset ceremony, andan hour later a ship-board pyrotechnicsdisplay terminated the Navy Dayactivities.
Having undergone a short self-maintenance period in Hamilton, the Lauzonmade her final call of the summer atToronto. Here she embarked membersof the Naval Officers' Association andtheir dependents in small parties forfour short cruises.
On September 12 she steamed pastMontreal and reverted to the operational
control of Canflaglant. Three days latershe slid back into the berth from whichshe had sailed.
Of the trip to the lakes many thingswill be said : "It was too hot. It was toolong. It was too quiet."
All the adverse opinions, however,will be voiced by non-natives of theGreat Lakes Area. While the cruise mayhave been something less than exquisitefor some, it was a labour of love forothers. Those whose birth places laywithin reach of any of the ports of callwill smile quietly and say: "A goodNavy this."-W.H.K.

HMCS Queen
Sub-Lt. (W) L. I. Fritzler and fivewrens from the Regina naval divisionattended the reunion of Reserve wrensOctober 7, 8 and 9 at HMCS Chippawain Winnipeg.
By all reports the get-together was anoverwhelming success and further cemented the fellowship within the wrens.
The officers and wrens of Queen haveexpressed their warmest congratulationsto those of Chippawa who devoted theirtime and energy to making the occasiona memorable one.
HMCS Cabot
The wrens of Cabot, the St. John'snaval division commenced celebratingtheir 10th anniversary in the Reservesby holding a dinner for present andformer wrens of Cabot.
The guests were Cdr. H. Garrett, VRD,RJCN(R) (Ret), former commandingofficer, and Mrs. Garrett, and Lt.-Cdr.F. H. Carter, executive officer, and Mrs.Carter. Cdr. G. G. R. Parsons, commanding officer, was unfortunately outof town.
Approximately 50 wrens and exwrens were present including Lt. (W)E. Crichton, and Sub-Lt. Thelma BrettOates, former divisional officer.
A dance was held by the wrens inCabot on Friday, October 27, to continuethe celebrations.
The present wren divisional officerand petty officer, Sub.-Lt. (W) P. J.Griffin and PO Anne Kieley, were interviewed on television to publicize theanniversary.
Sixteen years after the old "Bones" was driven ashore near East Poin t, Prince Edward Island, she is still waging her last and losing fight againstthe elements. One of the famous fighting ships of the Second World War, the destroyer Assiniboine was being towed to the scrap heap when she wasstranded. The battered hulk was photographed last summer by W. Farre II of "The Charlottetown Guardian" and copies of the pictures came to "TheCrowsnest" via Lt.-Cdr. J. B. Lamb, RCN(R), (Ret), publisher of "The Daily Packet and Times", Orillia, Ontario.

A PICTURE on file at Naval Headquarters had longoffered an apparently insoluble puzzle. It was
known that the ship was a surveying vessel, HMSEgeria, that the picture was taken in Esquimalt harbour and that the occasion must have been a solemnone, for jack and ensign were at half mast.
But why the disorder of her awnings?The answer to this question was provided by
Sub-Lt. Arthur Walpole, RNVR, of England. He iswriting the story of his service in the navy more thanhalf a century ago and asked the Naval Historian inOttawa for certain information andpietures of shipsin which he had served in Canadian waters. The abovepicture of the Egeria was one of the photographs sentto him.
In his letter of acknowledgment, Mr. Walpolesaid he was in the Egeria when the picture was taken,the occasion being the firing of the 81 minute-gunson the day of Queen Victoria's funeral, February 2,1901. The ship had been housed in for the winter,the awnings covering her completely.
"When the first gun was fired," wrote Mr. Walpole, "the sparks from the vent block reached theawnings and there was danger of them catching fire.Two boys, of which I was one, were detailed to holda shovel over the vent blocks of each of the two gunsused. The force of the explosion blew the head ofthe shovel right through the awnings and they hadto be triced up hurriedly as they are seen in thepicture." (E-40018)
Another occasion on which the firing of minuteguns resulted in a certain amount of embarrassmentis recalled in the August issue of The Bermudian, in

the following words:A curious incident occurred in Bermuda on the
morning after the King's [George V's] death. Thebattery at St. David's Island was ordered .to fire 70minute guns, signifying the years of the late monarch'slife. Steaming over the horizon, bound for HMC Dockyard for refitting, came the Colombian destroyerAntioquia. Her British commander, Captain CliveTrenchman, at first interpreted the gunfire as anofficial salute to the Colombian Navy, but suddenly,not far ahead of his ship, a huge geyser rose skyward.Clearly the battery Was firing live shell instead ofblank.
"Great Scott! yelled the startled Captain, "They'refiring at us!"
Fearsome thoughts raced through his mind; wasBritain at war with Colombia? Was there a revolutionin Bermuda? Or was it simply a bunch of irresponsiblepongos playing with a big gun? Well, his orders wereto dock in Bermuda, so dock he would. The batterywent on firing but no more shells fell near his ship.
.When Captain Trenchman got ashore he learnedthe truth of the matter. I F YOU HAVE never heard of thewreck of the Royal Charter, it is
because it happened more than 100 yearsago, but it is one to match with theTitanic and the Andrea Doria. In herday she was the crack clipper (ironhulled, ship-rigged, with auxiliaryscrew) on the Australian run, makingthe passage from Liverpool to Melbourne in 59 days.
She stranded on the shore of Anglesea,off the north coast of Wales, in the earlyhours of October 27, 1859, in one of thefew hurricanes that have crossed theBritish Isles. She carried a crew of 123and nearly 400 passengers. Of these 39survived, none of them women or children. This, only seven years after theloss of the Birkenhead, increased thesensation caused by the wreck, and itwas further heightened by gold fromthe Australian diggings - £322,440worth in shipments and an unknownamount in the possession of returningminers in coin, nuggets and dust.
The story has a grim theme and passages of horror. Most of the dead werenot drowned but beaten to death or tornto pieces on the rocks. More might havesurvived had they not clung so long totheir gold. One who lived to tell thetale had had the foresight to convert histo a cheque before he sailed-in awaterproof money belt it caused himlittle inconvenience.
The book is a synthesis of newspaperreports, proceedings of. ·the coroner'scourt and the Board of Trade inquiry,contemporary books and correspondence.The author also visited the site inMoelfre Bay and explored it with skindiving equipment; he found no gold, butdid see the hidden rock ledges on whichthe ship broke up. . Foundation Josephine was a familiar one in Halifax from early 1947until late 1952, when she was returnedto the Royal Navy and resumed herwartime name, Samsonia.
She was built as a convoy rescueship, capable of towing .. a disabled10,OOO-ton freighter for 1,500 miles atfrom eight to ten knots. The war wasover when she entered the service ofFoundation Maritime, but it cannot besaid she found peace. In her first yearand a half of service with the Canadiansalvage company she rescued or contributed to the rescue of 21 ships.

The Lt.-Cdr. Charles McDonald Memorial trophy, awarded annually to the"one who has, through his own achievements or efforts contributed most tosports in the Pacific Command throughout the year" has been awarded to CPOJ. H. Strachan, of Naden and recentlyof HMCS Skeena.
Honorable mention has been accordedCPO N. K. Jones, of the St. Laurent,twice winner of the trophy, for his continued interests and activity in sports.
Both men have been congratulatedon their sports leadership by RearAdmiral E. W. Finch-Noyes, Flag OfficerPacific Coast.
Lt,-Cdr. McDonald, in whose memorythe award is made, died in February1949 after many years of service in thePhysical and Recreational Trainingbranch of the RCN. An outstandingathlete himself, he was an ardent supporter of athletic events of all kinds.He was awarded the MBE in 1944 fora "wholehearted devotion to duty whichhas done much to improve the moraleand spirit of the service".

The Beacon HiH's three-year reign asCock of the Fleet in boat pulling cameto an end at the Pacific Command's fleetregatta in Mayne Bay, Barkley Sound,on September 23. The decisive winnerthis year, with 96 points out of a possible 112, was the Jonquiere.
It was frigates nearly all the way inthe final results of the regatta, whichwas held under ideal conditions. TheFraser, first in the war canoe race, wasthe only destroyer escort mentioned inthe final results and the mobile repairship Cape Breton managed a second inone of the pulling events.
Each ship had six representativeentries from all departments for theboat-pulling classic-operations, engineering, supply, weapons, chief and pettyofficers and wardroom. The Jonquierecollected three firsts, the Beacon Hill twoand the Antigonish one. Two secondsand a third kept the Jonquiere in themoney in every boat-pulling event.
After this noble showing the Jonquieres had to be content with sixthplace in the war canoe race, in whichthe Fraser, New Glasgow and Sussexvale were one-two-three.
Runner-up for the championship wasthe New Glasgow, with 85 points. TheBeacon Hill and Antigonish, with 73points each, tied for third.
Two Qualify forBisley Team
PO L. A. Williams, RCN (R), of Chippawa, the Winnipeg naval division, andCPO H. M. Oliver, of Stadacona, placedamong the top 18 contestants in theBisley Aggregate at the Dominion ofCanada Rifle Association meet at Connaught Ranges, Ottawa, in August andthereby qualified for the 1962 CanadianBisley team.
In the face of a much higher standardof competition than in other years, POWilliams placed 11th and CPO Oliver18th.
This is the third occasion on whichthere has been naval representation on
the Canadian Bisley team. CPO Oliverwas successful in gaining a place on the1958 team and Lt. G. A. Grivel, ofNaden, made the 1961 team.
Cabot ReturnsTo Hockey Fray
HMCS Cabot has for the first time inmany years entered a hockey team inthe St. John's Civil Service League "B"Division. Five teams are participating,Cabot, Fisheries, Highways, RCMP andFinance.
In its first exhibition game Cabotpulled an upset, tying Buckmaster's ofthe "A" Division 3-3.

HMCS Scotian's rifle team has won the John Labolt trophy for the seecond year in succession.The trophy is presented for annual small-bore competition among naval divisions across Canadaand is under the direction of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association. Competition lasts fromOctober to May. Scotian captured the trophy this year with an aggregate of 3,928 out of a possible4,000. The closest competitor, HMCS Malahat, Victoria, had 3,799. The Halifax team's monthlyaverage was 491, with an individual average of 95.2. Seated, holding the trophy, is Sub-Lt. (W)J. E. Hudson. The other Scotian team members are, left to right, PO C. A. The West Coast Navy has entered ateam in the new Esquimalt and DistrictHockey League, making the secondNavy hockey team in the west.

Since 1955 he has been the club professional at the Montreal Amateur Athletic Club and also instructs in tennis,badminton and golf.
During his 10-day visit in Halifaxhe gave 163 half-hour squash lessionsto 65 students in the Stadacona andShearwater courts.
His instructions and knowledge passedon to many should do much to improvethe game in the area. His efforts areexpected to be felt later on in theseason when, with practice and moretournaments, players should show muchimprovement.
HeadquartersCurling Begins
Rear-Admiral P. D. Budge, Chiefof Naval Personnel, on behalf ofVice-Admiral H. S.Rayner, Chief ofthe Naval Staff, curled the first stone onOctober 27 to open officially the sixth
year of activity for the RCN CurlingClub (Ottawa).
The club, which now has 170 maleand 100 female members, is located atDow's Lake on the grounds of HMCSCarleton.
Pipers Charles Bell and Alan Lumhyne were on hand for the opening toprovide the appropriate Gaelic atmosphere.
President Ed Lavalley welcomed alarge group of guests, all of whom arewell known in Ottawa Valley curlingcircles.
Club play began on the morning ofSaturday, October 28, with a two-gamemixed bonspiel, which ended with abuffet supper and prize-giving duringthe evening.
HCN Track TeamWins B.C. Area Title
The RCN has won the B.C. Area TriService track and field championship forthe third straight year, and this withsome of the Navy's big names at sea.

The new, more youthful members of theteam took over and scored 12 of a possible 16 first-place finishes.
Navy placed first in all track events,including the 100, 220, 440 and 880-yarddashes, one- and three-mile races, the440 relay and the one-mile medley relay. They also took first place in alljumping events-pole vault, high jump,broad jump and hop, step and jump.
In the four throwing events theyplaced as high as second, but by thenthey had the points needed for victory.
Cornwallis WinsWren Sports Meet
Cornwallis wrens were both hostessesand winners of the fourth biennial inter-establishment sports meet attendedin late October at the Annapolis Valleytraining base by wren officers andwrens from Stadacona, Shearwater, andShdburne.
Four wren officers and 87 wrens werepresent at the meet, most of them participating in basketball, volleyball andbowling.
Competitive sports were run on Saturday, October 20, from 0900 to 1700.Shelburne wrens were oustanding atbasketball, but Cornwallis wrens gathered in the honours for volleyball andbowling. Final point standings were:Cornwallis, 32; Shelburne, 23; andStadacona, 16.
A buffet supper in Conestoga blockon Saturday evening was attended byCaptain R. M. Steele, commanding officer of Cornwallis, Mrs. Steele, membersof the P&RT staff and their wives, andwren officers and wrens.
