Local car guy Carl Nathans uses his hobby to help injured veterans and their families

A Real TrooperCarl Nathans (right) presenting a Certificate of Appreciation on behalf of Operation First Response to John Rendemonti (left) at the Historic Car Club of Pennsylvania’s Father’s Day Car Show in Glen Mills, Pa. Rendemonti founded the Father’s Day Car Show and decieded to donate the proceeds of the show to Operation First Response.

Page 7: Cruising - August September 2014

T o many folks in southeastern Pennsylvania, Carl Nathans is no stranger. He has been involved in the car hobby since he was a high school kid in the late sixties. By 1974 he had managed to acquire the car of his dreams, a 1964 Corvette, for $3,000. Soon he could be found hanging out with other car guys at the local

Burger King and it’s fair to say that in time he got into his share of mischief—typical of car guys at that time. Not long afterward, however, wintertime rolled around. He found that the door locks were prone to freezing, and the time-tested method of using a match to heat the key proved futile. The extra time it took to warm them with a hair dryer fed by extension cords caused him to be late for work. His dream car had become a headache so he parted with the Corvette.

He moved on to a ’67 Camaro and other cars, and then on to other interests such as disco, and then power boating. The car bug lay dormant, but it never left. Not long into the new millennium the bug awoke and Carl found himself looking for a street rod. He assessed the activity of the car culture in and around Media, Pa., and discovered that there weren’t many car-related activities in the area. He purchased a ’34 Ford Roadster in 2006, but owning such a car wasn’t much fun with no cruises to go to.

Taking matters into his own hands, he ran a couple of small newspaper ads to notify folks in the area that he planned to hold a meeting at the Riddle Ale House to start a club. Not knowing if anybody would show up, Carl was pleased to find that the area held many like-minded folks, as approximately 100 attended the meeting.

“The room was packed with people interested in seeing a club started in Delaware County,” he said. On that day, the Delco Cruisers car club was born, and from its inception it has remained an all-inclusive car club. Having founded the club and while serving as its first president, he suggested a car show to recognize and honor the military. In 2008 the first annual Salute to the Troops was held.

Today Carl owns a ’50 Ford custom. He maintains his membership in the Delco Cruisers, but he is active in the Top Dead Center Motor Club based in Exton, Pa., serving as their Activities Coordinator. He is also active in the Historical Car Club of Pennsylvania.

During Top Dead Center’s formative years the members asked him for assistance in organizing a show to honor the military. This led to the successful Ed Pluck Memorial Cruise for the Troops, which is a monthly cruise held at the Whiteland Town Center on the second Saturday evening of the month from May through October. Ed Pluck was a former Marine and Top Dead Center member. Supplies collected at the cruise are packaged and sent to troops who are deployed.

Carl is extremely active in Operation First Response, a national organization that assists wounded troops and their families. He is a committee member who is involved in many aspects of the group’s activities, including Walk for the Wounded that was held in May at Rose Tree Park in Media, Pa.

A unique escort was needed to transport those troops whose injuries have left them unable to walk, and Carl reaches out to the car community every year, recruiting thirty or so volunteers to transport the wounded soldiers in their cars from a meeting place in Glen Mills, Pa., to Rose Tree Park. In addition, he reaches out to the Eastern Pennsylvania Confederation of Clubs, an organization that serves as the regional “voice” of numerous motorcycle clubs. Initially John May, who goes by “Slim,” orchestrated the participation of approximately 200 bikers in the event, but he has since handed the responsibility to a gentleman called “Preacher,” a former Army Ranger.

The seventh annual Walk for the Wounded took place on May 3. To date the event has raised more than one million dollars for Operation First Response.

During one Walk for the Wounded event, the young son of an injured soldier spotted the shirt Carl was wearing, which resembled an American flag. Patriotism was so strong in this boy that he ran to Carl and hugged his leg at the sight of the flag.

“He loves your shirt,” the boy’s mother said. The boy’s family was in need of a few thousand dollars’ worth of building materials for

their home to make it more accessible to his father. Carl reached out to Jim Jordan of County Corvette in West Chester, Pa., who raised the five thousand dollars needed.

Throughout the year Carl seeks other ways to help Operation First Response. Working with Jonas and Anne Beiler, founders of Auntie Annie’s Pretzels in Gap, Pa., the Welcome Home Heroes event was founded. It is incorporated into the last monthly cruise of the season at the Gap Family Center, which was built by the Beilers and houses a host of not-for-profit organizations.

Most recently the Historic Car Club of Pennsylvania has hosted its Father’s Day show in Glen Mills, Pa., a fundraiser for both Operation First Response and the Lion’s Club.

Carl says, “As we have matured, so has our purpose in this hobby. Our focus of life and awareness of life has shifted.”

Carl says his focus is awareness, love, support, and assistance to those in need.“‘Injured troops’ doesn’t just mean physical injury. PTSD, emotional, and psychological

wounds affect many. Emotional scars are tough to deal with.” And he’s here to help. Carl welcomes all who are interested in helping Operation First Response to contact

him at [email protected].

As we have matured,, so has our

purpose in this hobby. Our focus of life

and awareness of life has shifted.

—Carl Nathans

Dan’s Pizza Pizzazz CruiseCruisers seem to gravitate to places that have food. There is an old

saying that if a there are a lot of trucks at a restaurant then that’s a sign that the place has good food. That being said, each fourth Sunday of the month there is a large congregation of cruisers that head on out to Dan’s Pizza Pizzazz in Franklinville, N.J.

Car enthusiasts of all persuasions come out share some conversation and enjoy the sounds of Cruisin’ 92.1 radio station’s own Pepper Paul filling the air with nostalgic tunes.

Golden Corral CruiseHopping into the car and heading out for a Sunday run to for a bite

to eat is a great way to enjoy the hobby. In Vineland, N.J., every fourth Sunday in the summer can be a culinary treat and car cruise when the family heads out to the Golden Corral Cruise.

Like good cruises everywhere, there is music, such as the sounds of DJ Uncle Al Snyder from Cruisin’ 92.1 FM. There is also a buffet and plenty of time to sit and relax while enjoying a few hours with the many fellow car enthusiasts in attendance.

Independence Day Car ShowThe July 4th weekend is a time for us to celebrate the birth of our

nation. I guess you can say it’s the largest birthday bash on the planet. Cruisers show that spirit of independence and celebration, in many cases, by heading out to a 4th of July weekend car gathering. One such gathering took place in Michael Debbi Recreational Park in Richland, N.J. The show had all of the fun activities that community events have, from a variety of food and craft vendors to holding a car and bike show for the special rides we cruisers enjoy.

There were no shortage of rides at this year’s show and everyone was in a red, white and blue mood.

Proceeds from the show were donated by the Buena Vista Township Special Events Committee to the Wounded Warriors Project.

There are places of historical significance that show life in America as it used to be way back in the day. In the pinelands of New Jersey there is Wharton State Park and within the park is the Revolutionary War era village of Batsto. This became the setting for Cruising Classics Car Club’s fourth annual Shine in the Pines Car Show.

Nestled in the setting of early American structures was the field filled with more than 200 classic and contemporary rides.

Cruisers were also treated to some great bluegrass music as well as the opportunity to tour a large colonial era mansion on the site.

Like many car events, Shine in the Pines was Americana in theme and spirit.Check out Cruising Classics’ website for more red, white and blue events at

When you go to a car show or cruise, arguably, it’s safe to say that rides at these functions are somewhat dominated by General Motors and Ford’s more popular models. Chevelles and Mustangs as well as Corvettes are usually represented in good numbers. But what about the cars that are the forgotten models? You know the ones that are cool but not necessarily in the mainstream of classic rides? These are sometimes referred to as orphan cars because they aren’t that common.

Here are a few photos of the cars not often seen. Let’s hope that more of these rides are saved from a rusty fate because they are just as cool as any classic Detroit gave us.

Chariots of Fire Car ShowMedia, Pa., was the location for the Chariots of Fire Car Show. The show was

hosted by Pastor Larry Weed and manned by a group of dedicated volunteers. The Granite Run Mall had a parking area that was jammed with hundreds of rides. Participants had an opportunity to win not only the traditional-style trophy, but special homemade awards that were made from pistons.

Even yours truly was recognized for many years of contributions to our hobby (I was humbled by this gesture).

The show’s overseer is also a very special person; Pastor Weed is not just a man of the cloth but a certifiable car guy. He has a few rides that I’m sure must be pure heaven to enjoy.

Chariots of Fire was a car show dedicated to honoring all fathers the day before Father’s Day and was a day of fine rides with a high performance pastor at the helm that made for a special Father’s Day tribute.

School is CoolHow many of you remember going to school and learning about the

three “R”s?You know: racing, riding and renching (I know, the word is wrenching). Well,

the auto shop teachers and their students staged their third annual car and cycle show at Millville Senior High School and higher education saw 125 rides come out for a really fine event.

Participants were treated to a day that had perfect weather and a great vibe of car camaraderie.

It was neat that the show was staffed by students and classroom teachers who made it clear that school is definitely cool. Not your typical classroom indeed.

High performance education is alive and well at this New Jersey high school.

KEEP THE ENGINES REVVEDSummer’s not over yet with these hot Carlisle events

Carlisle is keeping up the summer heat this August and September with these can’t-miss events: Carlisle Truck Nationals, Bloomsburg Nationals, and Corvettes at Carlisle.

Carlisle Truck Nationals returns Aug. 1-3 as one of Carlisle PA Fairgrounds’ most family-friendly annual events.

The show field hosts about 2,000 trucks, which range from classics to modern rides, and guests of all ages will be wowed by the array—lowered, lifted, monsters, big rigs, or mid-sized.

Slated for the event are Virginia Giant and XXX—State of Destruction. This is the first time at Carlisle for XXX, which is driven by West Virginia resident Chrissy Moller who is squaring off against veteran Diehl Wilson of Virginia. Not only can kids enjoy edge-of-their-seat excitement with truck competitions, they can get into a real truck and go over cars.

Adult tickets run $10 daily, a three-day pass is $15 and children 12 and under get in free.

Dancing, crashing, cruising and classic cars come to Bloomsburg Nationals at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds for the third year, Aug. 8-10.

For this year’s show, not only will guests cruise to the grounds and camp to enjoy over 1,000 classics on the show field, but the fun and activities planned for the event itself will enhance the draw.

The weekend features AMC cars, a wide array of hot rods, customs, classics and more. The day’s activities welcome the World’s Largest Demolition Derby (hosted by JM Productions), as well as live music with Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods, dancing around the Quaker Steak and Lube stage, burnouts, muffler rap and a nighttime movie screening of one of the most iconic car movies of all time, starring Ron Howard, Cindy Williams, Harrison Ford and more.

Celebrate the past, present and future of the Corvette at Corvettes at Carlisle, which will host race displays, unique reunions, and the new Z06, at Carlisle PA Fairgrounds on Aug. 22-24.

Thursday serves as the official vendor set up day and display load in. People come to Carlisle to experience the huge Fun Field or the NCCC and their 7-sanctions judging. Also, free to everyone, including members of the Carlisle community, the NCRS is hosting its NCRS Gallery XIV (14) within Building G just outside of Gate 1. And, of course, the Corvette swap meet and car corral sales area is unmatched.

Seminars are always popular, with GM Certified Technician Paul Koerner of Corvette Repair, Inc. showcasing his talents throughout the weekend.

Three-day passes are available for $35.For more information on events or for vending spaces and to register, visit

S H I F T I N G G E A R S

A bout six months ago my wife and I came to the decision that our 14-year-old van was finally ready for a replacement. That car was another step into the world of technologically advanced cars. For the record, my 1982 Datsun 280 ZX was a first in

“smart” rides with a voice that told you the door’s ajar and the fuel level was low. I think it cussed me out in Japanese a few times, too.

Well, I just got to thinking about how advanced cars have come over the years and made some comparisons of the good old days to the cars of today.

Here are a few observations on how we’ve become so technologically advanced with our cars. The test subject is my 1963 Corvette and my wife’s 2012 Chevrolet SUV.

• Ignition keys. My ’63, with the punch out piece, goes into a slot; simply turn the key. My wife’s car has a big black plastic case with all kinds of microchips in the hand held part. Heaven forbid if the key fails.• The dash board of my car has gauges that has a tach and speedo, along with fuel, oil pressure, electric and water temperature. The new family ride gauges everything from the outside temperature to your heart rhythm and blood pressure. I like to check the blood pressure gage, especially when the price of gasoline goes up.• Radio. Mine has a slide and it’s AM or FM on the closest station (92.1FM of course). The new car has what seems like 30 or 40 buttons and a radio face that was designed by NASA. You can get satellite radio, AM, FM, and broadband – and I believe I communicated with an extraterrestrial a few months ago.• Tire pressure monitoring in a classic is the old pencil gauge; look at the tire to give it a visual inspection deal. On the new ride there is a symbol that gives you the low tire location and tire pressure. I believe the symbol next to the tire information identifies the type of road kill that is on your tire.• The dashboard on the Vette is plain and simple. On the new car there is a symbol for everything and some gauges thrown in for good measure (one slightly resembles a moose). There is a lot more to compare but I’m finally getting the hang of opening the rear hatch, in

our new ride, with instructions found on page 2,089, article B, section 4 of the owner’s manual.By the way, I think my Vette’s owner’s manual is about 100 pages.Old cars rule and remind us that life was once rather simple and uncomplicated. You

know, I kind of like it that way.

Department of Thank You: Thanks to John Parkin, Rich Vanarsdale and their auto shop class students who helped me get my car started at their Millville Senior Car Show. FYI: The battery blew up at the show.

Department of Gratitude: To all who take the time to plan and stage cruises, shows and fun runs. It’s a job that we seldom remember that someone does.

Department of Shore Fun: Circle October 19 for the ever popular Fun Run 1 to Ocean City, NJ. It’s a nearly 300 car fun run. More to come.

And so we go into the heart of the summer. There are many events for us cruisers to enjoy…pick and chose, you just can’t lose.

Hi Gang,

I’d like to start by apologizing to everyone, and one friend in particular, about something. Last issue, I was too sure about the “Cruise Down Memory Lane in Vineland” and I apologize to our readers, but mostly I want to apologize to Marvin Askins, who headed the event. He came through with some help and did a great job. Very well done.

The time of year is also coming that all of us love – the leaves start to fall, weeds die, and all the goodies people have hidden become visible. Let’s face it, we all go down the road checking every garage, barn or any rusted hulk sitting outside, its our nature. We want to find that “Barn Find.” Of course since shows like Barret-Jackson, everyone has “gold” sitting in their barns.

But what is a find? It means different things to different people. I know here in South Jersey where I live, most of us have heard stories like a ‘67 Camaro sitting, rotted into the ground, or how about the “SuperBird” being used to hang rugs on. Or the story of a ‘63 Vette where the whole frame just wasn’t there anymore. We all know these stories and what’s bad is most contain some facts. We all know where ‘55-57 Chevys are rusting in the woods, probably two forests over from the woods where trees are growing through Edsels.

How about the cars that are perfect, sitting for 30 years on concrete in a garage without being started? Sure looks nice but the moment you sit in it there goes the leather or vinyl interior. Try putting up a convertible top—think the brakes will work? Dream on! Unless you find someone who drives their vehicles like Jay Leno, I think your find could add up the dollars, and in the end, was it such a great find?

But they are out there, they show up all the time, the question just is: how much do you want to hunt? There are some lucky ones where “grand pop” parked it in the barn years ago, and it’s waited, covered with hay and junk since. Somehow these are the ones that you pour a little gas down the carb and jump it and it comes to life. It happens, not to often, but those stories are out there too.

And then there are the dreamers, and I fall into this category. Drive down the road, especially in Lancaster, check out the used car lots – model “T’s” “A’s” El Caminos, ‘55-57 & ‘58 Chevys, old Plymouths. They’re there in somewhat good shape, the question is how good are you? And how deep are your pockets? Remember anything you cannot do yourself costs.

So before you go out for that “find,” sit down, think it out, that’s all.
