How much does a prayer weigh?The only man I ever knew who triedto weigh one still does not know.

Once he thought he did. Thatwas when he owned a little grocerystore on New York's West Side. Itwas the week before Christmas of1918 when a tired-looking womancame into the store and asked himfor enough food to make aChristmas dinner for her children.He asked her how much she couldafford to spend.

The woman answered. "I havenothing to offer but a little prayer."

  The man confesses that he wasnot very sentimental in thosedays. A grocery store could not berun like a breadline.

"Write it down," he said with a

huff. To his surprise, the womanpulled a piece of paper from herpocket, unfolded it, and handed itto him over the counter. "I did thatduring the night, while sitting upwith my sick baby."

The grocer took the paper.

Then an idea came to him.Without even reading the prayer,he placed the paper on one sideof his old-fashioned weight scalesand said, "We shall see how muchfood this is worth."

To his astonishment, the scale

would not go down when he put aloaf of bread on the other side.And it still didn't go down as headdedmorefood.

Finally he said, "Well, that's allthe scales will hold. Here's a bag."And he turned away.

With a little sob, the womantook the bag and started packingthe food, only stopping to dry her

eyes on her sleeve from time totime. The grocer tried not to look,but he had given hera big bag andcouldn't help butsee that it wasn'tquite full. Without

another word, hetossed a large cheesedown the counter.Had he let down hisdefenses enough toactually look at thewoman, he would

have been rewardedwith a timid smileand look of deepestgratitude.

When the womanhad gone, the grocer examined hisscales, which had worked fine for

the previous customer. He neverfigured out how or when it hadhappened, but they were broken.

The grocer had never seen thatwoman before, and he never sawher again. But he always kept thatslip of paper with her simple

prayer: "Please, Lord, give us thisday our daily bread."

oración: «Por favor, Señor, danos hoyel pan de cada día».
