KEY POINTS1. Basic science of climate change.2. Mitigation & it’s policies.3. Adaptation.4. Consequences.

BASIC SCIENCE OF CLIMATE CHANGE

Page 4: Curbing climate change

WHAT IS CLIMATE CHANGE

• A change in global or regional climate patterns.

• e.g: Shift in winds. Changing of

temperature. Changing in the

level of sea.

Page 5: Curbing climate change

CAUSES OF CLIMATE CHANGE

HUMAN ACTIVITIES NATURAL PROCESSES

Page 6: Curbing climate change

Human activities contribute more to climate change.

Fossil fuel, the essence of the climate change.

According to one report: 90 companies are responsible for 2/3 of the harmful emission generated since the industrial age began.

what would happen if the amount of carbon dioxide, CO2, in the atmosphere were to double?

Gustavus Arrhenius chemist in Sweden, He got the answer, that the temperature on the planet would rise by a few degrees centigrade, by the middle of the 21st century, by 2050

ABD’S ASSESMENT

• Climate change will affect south Asia more than most other region.

• Monsoon rains and heavy storm will increase.• Mountain countries will face more landslides

and flooding.• Coastal countries will likely to be partly

inundated by sea-level rise.

Page 8: Curbing climate change

CLIMATE CHANGE & PAKISTAN

Pakistan ranked no # 3 after Haiti and Philippines as countries most affected by climate change.

Impacting the social, national and economic landscape.

Page 9: Curbing climate change

• Taken as a whole, the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs of climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time.

• - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change

MITIGATION & IT’S POLICIES

Page 11: Curbing climate change

MITIGATIONWHAT DOES IT MEANS

Elimination or Reducing the adverse condition of the climate.

Page 12: Curbing climate change

ITS POLICIES• Waste minimization.

For example# use silverware instead of disposable plates spoons.

• Reduction of fossil fuel.the burning of fossil fuels release CO₂ into the atmosphere, which is a greenhouse gas that contributes to climate change. For example# ride a bi-cycle or walk more or use public transports.

Page 13: Curbing climate change

• Create awareness among peopleWhen shopping, use paper shopping bag instead of polythene bags.

• Reduce green house gases. For example# plant a tree they absorb

CO₂ and give off oxygen. A single tree will absorb approximately one ton of CO₂ during its lifetime.

Page 14: Curbing climate change

• More efficient use of energy Use solar panel system because does not produce

harmful bi-products complete absence of destructive emissions reducing global warming and other environmental problems

• Low carbon energy supply. If we use these low carbon energy supply means we definitely reduce the bad impact on climate.

ADAPTATION

Page 16: Curbing climate change

ADAPTATION ?

“Take appropriate steps in response to climate change to reduce the effects”

TWO TYPES OF ADAPTATION

1. Autonomous adaptation.2. Planned adaptation.

Page 17: Curbing climate change

AUTONOMOUS ADAPTATION

“Automatic response that every system generates in response to any climate change”

best example : PLANTS•Helps to cool down the temperature, when the surrounding heats up.•Release evaporated water in the form of droplets into the air.•Most easiest & sustainable way to protect the environment.

But unfortunately WE ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH with it !

Page 18: Curbing climate change

PLANNED ADAPTATION“Human beings generate responses in order to maintain

climate change”

•Make a plan.•Follow set of strategies.•Applied where the system doesn't have sufficient autonomous capacity.

CONSEQUENCES

Page 21: Curbing climate change

Consequences of climate changeSome of the most dangerous consequences of climate change are listed here:1. Higher temperatures: Heat trapping gases emitted by power

plants , automobiles & deforestation are the main cause of high temperature.

2. Wildlife at risk: Because of rising temperatures across

the globe , forcing animal species to migrate new, cooler areas in order to survive.

HOW HOT IS TOO HOT ??

Page 22: Curbing climate change

3. Rising seas: Sea level rise because warmer water

takes up more room than colder water.

4. More heat related illness & diseases: climate change may increase the spread of

infectious diseases, mainly because warmer temperatures allow disease-carrying insects, animals & microbes as compared to cold weather.
