Austrian Airlines to cut 1,000 jobs

In a statement, the airline said the downsizing

would happen in stages and include layoffs. Some

positions would be eliminated throughoutplacements or by not refilling vacancies, it said.

``Although the aim will be to design the reduction

in staff numbers to be as socially responsible as

possible, there will also be layoffs,'' the statementsaid.

US loses 467,000 jobs, unemployment at 9.5%

The June job losses were more than 100,000greater than the 363,000 consensus of WallStreet economists polled by Reuters and broke a

four-month trend of moderation in job losses.

The Labor Department data showed that in Apriland May, 8,000 fewer jobs were lost thanpreviously reported. The May job losses were

revised downward to 322,000, while the Aprillosses were revised upward to 519,000.
