Introduction

Cengage Learning’s Outline Builder App walks students through the outlining process. The Outline

Builder guides students through topic generation, research, outlining and speech preparation

processes.

Audience

This document will assist students taking assignments and viewing grades.

Objectives

This document explains how students do the following

TakinganAssignmentThese steps describe how to take Outline Builder assignments. You can access assignments in the

Learning Path Navigator (LPN). You can use the Guides located on the right side of the assignment to

assistance in completing the assignment. They’re are optional. If you choose not to use the Guides, your

assignment will still submit for a grade.

1 Select the assignment.

Result: The Topic Generation page displays in the assignment.

2 Enter a topic in the Enter Your Topic text box.

IMPORTANT: Outline Builder assignments do not save automatically. Save assignments frequently to avoid losing your work.

3 Optional: Answer the questions in the Topic Generation Guide section.

NOTE: You can complete the assignment without using the Guide, the guide is an optional tool to help you complete the assignment.

4 Click Research.


Result: The Research page displays.

5 Click the drop down menu to add sources and modify source types.

NOTE: The miscellaneous source option allows students to list source types not included in the drop‐down menu.

6 Optional: Answer the questions in the Research Guide section if desired.


7 Enter the information into the fields.

Click Create Citation.

Result: The source saves and the citation displays near the top of the page.

Add additional sources by repeating this procedure and re‐ordering the citations alphabetically.

8 Click Outline.

Result: The Outline page displays.


9 Complete the following fields:

Title

Purpose Statement/Goal

Thesis/Central Idea

Organization Pattern

10 Click Add Point or Add Transition to add a point or transition to the Outline Body section.

NOTE: You can fill in points and transitions in the Outline Body section. You can add points in the Introduction section and the Conclusion section as well.

11 Optional: Drag a point to the right and position it under an existing point to create a sub‐point. Drag a point to the left, if you’d like to move it up in the outline hierarchy.

12 Optional: Click the Preview/Print button.

13 Click Note Cards.

Result: The Note Card page displays.

14 Click Add Note Card and complete the Note Card Guide section.


Result: A blank Note Card displays.

15 Optional: Click Outline Preview to view assignment information.

NOTE: You can also reference the Outline Preview to help you complete Note Cards. Content from the Outline Preview can be copied and pasted to Note Cards.

16 Fill in Note Card and repeat previous step as necessary.

Result: You creates Note Cards for the speech.

17 Optional: Click Print/Preview to review and access the print option for this page.


Result: The Preview Note Card page displays.

18 Optional: Click Print.

Result: The Note Cards print.

19 Click Submit.

Result: A submission confirmation pop‐up displays.

20 Click Submit again.

NOTE: Assignments and question types vary according to the way your instructor set up your course.

Result: The submission confirmation page displays.


ManualCitation

Your instructor may require you to create a manual source citation instead of completing a source

citation form. Create a citation list by entering citations in the text field and clicking the Add Citation

button.

Follow the citation style format provided in the example and enter the citations in the text field in the

Research component.

You can view the scores your instructor gave you in the Learning Path.

If you want to see the course average and assignment scores, look in the Progress App.


Summary

The Outline Builder App guides you through topic generation, research, outlining and speech

preparation processes to enable students to create better assignments. This document explains how to

use Outline Builder's functionality. Refer questions about specific assignments to the course instructor.
