Central Washington University is a place where students get to do what they’re learning. Biology students and professors tag bull trout on Snoqualmie Pass. Music students perform on Benaroya Hall’s world-class stage. Faculty and students in geology site earthquake detection systems on dams, mountaintops, and coastlines.

The benefit to students is an educational experience made richer, more exciting, and more relevant by applying classroom knowledge to real situations. The benefit to employers is well educated and experienced graduates who are prepared for work on day-one because they’ve already moved beyond books to apply their knowledge in the field.

Small classes taught exclusively by professors allow students to work closely with faculty, to ask questions, and to engage in research as undergraduates. Faculty know their students’ names. Learning isn’t confined to the classroom. It’s part of the way we live.

“I am very happy with what I got out of Central’s Environmental Studies program—it has opened my mind and many doors to

environmental issues and concerns, where I know I will be able to make a difference.”

Who Is A Transfer Student? You are a transfer student if you have earned any number of credits from another college or university after graduation from high school. Running Start students please see page 6.

When To ApplyPriority deadlines to submit applications and transcripts:Fall quarter: March 1Winter quarter: November 1Spring quarter: February 1Summer quarter: June 1

How To ApplyIT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING:• Completed application (online application is preferred)• Official college transcripts from all colleges attended.

If you attended a Washington State community college, please request that your transcript be sent electronically to CWU.

• Official high school transcripts (if applicable)• Official test scores (if applicable)• $50 application fee (non-refundable)

Applications are available online or you may contact the Admissions Office to request hard copies. Online applications are processed more quickly than those received by mail.

If you have completed 40 or more college-level credits (27 semester credits) at the time of application, you are required to submit official transcripts from all colleges you have attended.

If you took two or more years of a foreign language in high school, you should submit official high school transcripts. This fulfills the CWU graduation requirement for foreign language.

If you have completed LESS than 40 college-level credits (27 semester credits) at the time of application, you must submit official high school transcripts and standardized test scores (ACT or SAT) as well as college transcripts. Transfer students in this category must meet freshman admission requirements in addition to the minimum GPA requirement (2.5) for transfer students.

High school GPAs, test scores, and college GPAs are all taken into consideration for admission purposes. High school GPA and test scores are only taken into consideration for transfer students with less than 40 credits.

Final transcripts are required if you are still attending classes. When you apply, please send your most current transcripts. Your application will be processed as long as you do not have more than two academic quarters (or semesters) to complete prior to transferring to CWU.

Although you can be admitted to CWU while attending courses at another college, remember to submit a final transcript to CWU after your final grades have been posted. If you are pursuing a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) associate degree from a community college, please ensure that your degree is listed on your final transcript before sending it to CWU. For a list of approved DTA degrees, visit cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-equivalencies-policies.

Admission CriteriaCommunity college transfer students who complete a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) associate degree are normally guaranteed admission to CWU.

For transfer students who are not pursuing a DTA degree (or have not completed it at the time of application), the cumulative GPA and the types of college courses completed are the most heavily weighed factors in the admission process. Specific factors include:• Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above• Recent academic performance and GPA trend• Completion of college-level math and English• High school GPA and SAT or ACT scores (for students

with less than 40 college-level credits at the time of application)

• Any personal circumstances that may have affected your GPA (use the application essay to explain)

Admission to your intended academic major requires applying to that particular academic department after being admitted to the university. You may contact any department by calling 509-963-1211.

Students attending University Centers should contact their appropriate center for additional information (see pages 10 and 11).

CWU’s accredited education program is the sixth largest

in the nation and placed in the top one

percent nationally in a recent review.

Real-world experiences make learning exciting and relevant, and prepares CWU graduates to put their knowledge to work on day-one in a new career.

Prior College CreditIn general, CWU will accept credits earned at other accredited institutions. Courses equivalent to CWU courses will transfer directly. Other courses that are not exact CWU equivalents may also transfer, but they may only count as general elective credits. However, each academic department at CWU has the authority to approve courses from other schools that are not exact CWU equivalents. In those cases, it is best to communicate directly with your specific academic department to have those types of course substitutions approved. For more information, see the frequently asked questions section (page 7) or visit cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-equivalencies-policies.

The following credits will not transfer:• College courses numbered below 100 level• Developmental education or remedial courses• English as a Second Language courses• Courses specific to one religion• Credit for life experience

Credit EvaluationsTRANSFER CREDIT AND CAPS REPORTSWithin two to four weeks from when we receive your official college transcripts, you will be able to view your Transfer Credit Report online via the CWU Wildcat Connection and SAFARI menu. Your Transfer Credit Report will show how your credits will transfer to CWU. After you have been fully admitted you will have access to a CAPS Report which provides more details about how your transfer credits will satisfy the CWU General Education Requirements.

Other online sources of information include the CWU catalogs at catalog.acalog.cwu.edu and transfer admission information at cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-equivalencies-policies.

If you need further assistance, please call the CWU Academic Advising Center at 509-963-3523.

Technical or Vocational College CreditGenerally speaking, most credits from technical or vocational colleges do not transfer to CWU. However, if you have taken any courses from a fully accredited institution that are very similar to the courses listed in the CWU General Education Requirements or courses listed in your intended major, it is possible to receive transfer credit for these courses.

The official credit evaluation you receive will automatically award any credit that applies to your General Education Requirements. You will need to check

with your intended academic department to find out if any of your technical/vocational credits will count toward your major.

Other Forms of CreditCWU recognizes college credit from a number of sources, including Advanced Placement (AP), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), International Baccalaureate (IB), correspondence courses, and military service. CWU will accept a maximum total of 45 quarter credits from any combination of these programs, but only 30 of those credits may come from military service.

NON-U.S. COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY CREDITCWU will accept credits from non-U.S. schools when the following conditions are met:

1. The institution has been certified by CWU as a legitimate, recognized institution of higher education within a particular country.

2. The student has received a passing grade recognized by the institution.

3. CWU has received an official record or transcript.

4. International transcripts must be evaluated by one of the following agencies: Foundation for International Services (FIS) World Education Services (WES)

CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICEUpon submission of official military transcripts, students may receive up to 30 lower-division elective credits for completion of military academic schools as recommended by the American Council on Education (ACE). Credit is not awarded for basic training or specialty schools such as MOS or Tech School.

Running StartIf you enroll at CWU directly after graduating from high school (including summer), you must meet regular freshman admission requirements and submit official high school transcripts and ACT or SAT test scores, and submit Running Start credits for evaluation as transfer credit. If you have completed an approved Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) associate degree you will also apply as a freshman. However, you have fulfilled all lower-division general education requirements at CWU. For a list of approved DTA degrees, visit cwu.edu/registrar/ transfer-equivalencies- policies.

Frequently Asked QuestionsDo I need an associate degree in order to transfer to CWU?No. You can still be admitted to CWU without an associate degree. However, if you have the opportunity to obtain a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) associate degree, it will be to your benefit when you transfer to CWU. One of the biggest benefits of having a DTA degree is that it will automatically satisfy the General Education Requirements at CWU.

If I have my DTA degree, will I be admitted to CWU?Yes. If you have a DTA degree from any of the colleges listed on the Web at cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-equivalencies-policies, you will be given priority admission to CWU. If you continue to earn credits at a college or university after you earn your DTA degree, you need to maintain at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.

I am a transfer student, but do not have a Direct Transfer Agreement associate degree. How will I know how my credits will transfer to CWU?You will receive an official credit evaluation after you have been formally admitted to CWU.

If you attended a Washington community college or public university, you can unofficially evaluate your credits by reviewing how courses from your college(s) fulfill CWU General Education Requirements (Transfer Policies), or the Equivalency Sheets, which show all of the equivalent courses including those outside of the general education requirements. Both of these resources can be found by clicking on current equivalencies at cwu.edu/registrar/transfer-equivalencies-policies.

Will my associate degree satisfy the CWU foreign language graduation requirement? If you transfer to CWU with a DTA degree and pursue a bachelor of arts degree, you will have to complete one year of college level foreign language prior to graduation from CWU unless you completed two years of a foreign language in high school. If you pursue a degree other than a BA (such as a BS, BMus, BA-Ed, or BAS) you will be exempt from the CWU foreign language graduation requirement.

Does the associate of science transfer degree complete all of the same general education requirements as an AA/DTA degree? No. The Associate of Science degree requires a student to complete three additional courses to satisfy the general education requirements at CWU.

How many total credits will transfer to CWU?CWU will accept a maximum of 105 community college credits. If you attended a four-year college, you may transfer a maximum of 135 credits. CWU requires completion of 45 credits in residence, 60 upper-division credits, and a minimum of 180 total credits for a degree.

Do I need to send transcripts from all of the colleges I’ve attended if the courses have already been transferred to another college?Yes. You must send transcripts from all colleges attended, even if the transfer credits from other colleges are listed on another college’s transcript.

How and when do I apply to be accepted into my academic major? Each academic department has an application process. You should apply for your major after being admitted to CWU if you will be a sophomore or junior. Since many departments may have application deadlines, pre-admission requirements, GPA requirements, and/or limited enrollment capacity, you should contact your specific department to determine what is required. This is especially true for students interested in the following programs: accounting, communication, business administration, aviation, music, paramedicine, or education.

Financial AidIf you have not already done so, you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and mail it as soon as possible after January 1. The earlier you submit your FAFSA, the more aid you may be eligible to receive. The CWU Title IV code is 003771. The FAFSA is available at high schools, colleges, and universities throughout the U.S., or you may file online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (The online application is preferred.)

ScholarshipsDuring the fall of every academic year, the CWU General Scholarship Application is available online at cwu.edu/scholarships. This application allows all interested students, entering freshmen and transfers, as well as continuing students, to be considered for academic and/or need-based CWU Foundation scholarships. The deadline to apply for these scholarships is February 1 of each year.

Student EmploymentEach year CWU hires approximately 2,500 students to work on campus. You do not need to apply for financial aid to qualify for most jobs. If you are receiving financial aid, your employment will normally not affect your aid. To learn more about the student employment opportunities at CWU, call 509-963-3008, or visit cwu.edu/student-employment.

Veteran Benefits Students wanting to use veteran benefits at CWU need to contact CWU Veterans Affairs (CWU VA) prior to starting classes. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is not automatically notified when an eligible student enrolls for classes at CWU unless the student informs the CWU VA Office. This applies to first-time benefit users as well as transfer students. You may contact the CWU VA Office via e-mail at [email protected] or call 509-963-3028.

Study AbroadCentral Washington University offers almost 200 international programs in 50 countries and over 170 exchange locations within the United States.

• Programs range in length from 10 days to one academic year.

• All programs grant academic credit that can be applied to major, minor, or breadth requirements.

• Foreign language proficiency is not required for study abroad.

• Classes taught in English are available in many non-English speaking countries.

• Some programs cost roughly the same as attendance at CWU.

• Financial aid (loans, grants, and scholarships) can be applied to study abroad costs and can usually be increased to match the cost of the program.

• With proper planning, studying abroad does not delay time to graduation.

For more information, contact the Study Abroad and Exchange Programs International Center at 509-963-3612, [email protected], or visit cwu.edu/international-programs/saep.
